For the clearest pixel-art horror experience, start with the game’s native resolution or integer scaling, correct PS1-era games to 4:3, and use nearest-neighbor filtering. Calibrate brightness with the built-in test image, then add only as much CRT styling, dithering, blur, or bloom as you can use without hiding silhouettes, text, or warnings. Turn on subtitles, increase their size and contrast, and disable motion effects that make you uncomfortable.
A reliable starting preset
Pixel-art horror games deliberately use darkness, limited palettes, and low-resolution shapes. The best settings preserve those choices while keeping the information needed to move, read, and react. Use this as a neutral starting point, then adjust one control at a time in a moving scene rather than judging a static menu.
| Area | Starting setting | Why it works | Change it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Resolution and scaling | Native output or integer scaling | Keeps pixel blocks even and prevents shimmering edges | Text or geometry is too small; try a higher output resolution or a gentler upscale |
| Aspect ratio | 4:3 correction for PS1-style presentations | Restores the intended proportions of characters and rooms | The game was authored for a different display shape or already applies correction |
| Texture filtering | Nearest-neighbor | Retains hard pixel boundaries | Small text or diagonal geometry becomes unreadable; test a mild filter |
| Dithering | On when it carries shading or texture information | Preserves deliberate patterning in fog, shadows, and gradients | Patterns flicker, obscure symbols, or create visual noise |
| Brightness or gamma | Use the game’s calibration image; make the darkest sample barely visible | Reveals paths and items without flattening the mood | You cannot distinguish silhouettes, doors, hazards, or interface icons during play |
| CRT effects | Off initially, or low scanline and mask strength | Lets you evaluate the art and legibility before adding a display simulation | Scanlines, masks, bloom, or curvature remove detail or darken subtitles |
| Subtitles | On, with the largest comfortable font, a solid or translucent background, and speaker names when available | Separates dialogue from a dark, busy scene | Letters blend into the scene or notifications disappear too quickly |
| Motion effects | Motion blur, camera shake, head bob, and flashing effects off or at their lowest level | Reduces discomfort and keeps pixel edges readable while turning | The image feels unnaturally static and your comfort is unaffected; raise one effect modestly |
| Color-vision support | Choose a filter only after checking symbols, icons, and brightness differences | Prevents color from being the sole way to identify a threat or item | Two gameplay states still look identical; add labels, shapes, or a different contrast setting |
Save this configuration as a profile if the game supports profiles. A “cinematic” preset can then add effects without replacing your readable baseline.

Keep pixel edges intact
Choose integer scaling first
Integer scaling enlarges every source pixel by the same whole-number factor. A 320×240 image, for example, becomes 640×480 or 960×720 without fractional rows or columns. Edges stay square, patterns remain stable, and a character does not shimmer when the camera moves. If the game offers a choice between “integer,” “pixel perfect,” “native,” and “smooth,” choose the integer or pixel-perfect option for the first test.

Non-integer scaling can be necessary when your display resolution does not fit the game’s internal framebuffer. In that case, inspect a one-pixel line, a small font, and a diagonal wall while walking. If their thickness pulses or their colors blend, return to integer scaling, accept a smaller image with a clean border, or use a window size that is a whole-number multiple.
Correct the aspect ratio for PS1-style games
Many PS1-era horror recreations were designed around a 4:3 frame. Stretching that image to a wide display makes circles oval, corridors wider than intended, and characters unnaturally broad. Select the game’s 4:3 or “original aspect” option when it exists. A pillarbox border is preferable to distortion. Do not force 4:3 on a game whose artwork and interface were authored for 16:9; check whether the menu labels the correction as “PS1,” “retro,” or “original.”
Use nearest-neighbor filtering before smooth filters
Nearest-neighbor samples the closest source pixel, so a red pixel remains a red block instead of being blended with its neighbors. It is the safest choice for crisp sprites, inventory icons, and bitmap fonts. Bilinear or other soft filters can make a low-resolution image easier to look at from a distance, but they also blur one-pixel clues and turn lettering into gray bands.

A gentler filter is a readability compromise, not a universal upgrade. Keep the option that lets you identify objects during movement, not the one that looks smooth in a screenshot.
Decide deliberately about dithering
Dithering uses repeating pixels to approximate colors or gradients that the palette does not contain. In horror games it may be part of the intended fog, blood, or shadow texture. Leave it enabled when the pattern carries atmosphere or depth. Disable it when repeated dots flicker during camera motion, merge with subtitles, or make a health icon resemble static. Test a dark wall and a moving character; a pattern that looks subtle in a pause screen can become distracting in motion.

Set darkness without hiding gameplay
Use the game’s calibration image
Brightness, gamma, and contrast are not interchangeable. Brightness usually shifts the overall level, gamma changes the relationship between dark and mid tones, and contrast changes the separation between them. Prefer the game’s own calibration screen because it reflects the engine’s tone mapping. EA’s Dead Space guidance instructs players to adjust brightness until the left sample image is barely visible. That is a useful starting reference: the darkest test patch should not disappear entirely, but it should not look like a gray rectangle either.
After calibration, leave the menu and test a moving scene. Confirm that you can see a character silhouette against a wall, the edge of a staircase, an interactable item, and a warning or damage indicator. If any of those vanish, raise the relevant control slightly and recheck the scene’s brightest areas. A setting that reveals every shadow can wash out the contrast that makes a threat readable.
Account for your room and display
Ambient light changes perceived black levels. A setting that is comfortable at night may hide detail in daylight, while a very bright monitor can make a carefully graded scene look flat. Set the display’s picture mode to a neutral or game mode, disable automatic “dynamic contrast” if it pumps during dark scenes, and make adjustments in the room where you normally play. Keep the game’s calibration and the monitor’s controls separate: change one, observe the moving scene, then decide whether another change is necessary.
Treat CRT simulation as an optional layer
CRT simulation can add scanlines, shadow masks, curvature, bloom, color bleed, and other traits associated with older displays. Bethesda’s Quake II Enhanced guide lists CRT simulation alongside antialiasing, depth of field, bloom lighting, motion blur, fog, dynamic shadows, and color lightmaps as visual enhancements. Those controls alter style; they are not accessibility requirements.
Why scanlines and masks can hurt legibility
CRT Pixel’s guidance notes that scanlines and masks can remove luminance and damage small fonts and subtitles. The dark gaps or colored grille pattern are applied over the entire frame, so a two-pixel letter may lose half its usable brightness. Start with the effect disabled. If you want the look, increase scanline and mask strength gradually, then read a subtitle, inspect an inventory icon, and walk through a dark corridor. Reduce the effect until those elements remain distinct.

Balance bloom, depth of field, and fog
Bloom spreads bright pixels into neighboring areas. It can make a lamp or muzzle flash atmospheric, but it can also obscure the outline of a key or soften a warning symbol. Depth of field blurs parts of the image according to distance; disable it when background clues or text become hard to focus on. Fog and color-lightmap controls can change the separation between a monster and its environment. Keep them only when you can still identify silhouettes and paths during movement.
Make subtitles and interface text readable
Turn on every available caption aid
Enable subtitles or closed captions before starting the game. Microsoft Game Dev guidance describes subtitles as a way for players to follow all dialogue and provides options that make them easier to read. Select speaker names when offered, use a subtitle background or outline, and choose a duration that leaves enough time to finish reading after a line appears.
Font scaling varies by game. Bethesda’s Redfall guide documents a range from 100% to 150%, along with brightness, contrast, color-blind filters, motion-blur levels, a persistent reticle, and notification-duration controls. If your game exposes a similar range, increase the font until letters remain distinct at your normal seating distance without covering the center of play. Do not assume that a percentage in one title maps to the same physical size in another.
Use contrast and sensible line lengths
The Accessible Games Initiative criteria call for a minimum text contrast ratio of 4.5:1 against all backgrounds. A solid dark panel behind light subtitles is usually more reliable than a thin outline over a textured scene. If a panel is unavailable, select the strongest outline or shadow and test text over both a black corridor and a bright effect.
Microsoft’s feature-tag guidance gives practical layout targets of up to 46-pixel text at 1080p, no more than 40 characters per line, and two lines on screen. These are guidance values rather than a guarantee that every game can implement them. When a line wraps into three or four narrow lines, increase the notification duration and look for a “large text,” “subtitle size,” or “safe area” control. Keep the interface inside the display’s safe area so the first or last characters are not clipped.

Do not rely on color alone
A red subtitle, colored objective marker, or tinted icon should not be the only indication of danger or status. Look for a matching symbol, shape, label, sound cue, or brightness difference. If the game offers a persistent reticle, enable it when locating interactable objects is difficult; disable it if it removes the intended uncertainty and you can play comfortably without it.
Reduce motion discomfort while keeping control
Start with blur and camera shake
Motion blur blends successive frames. In a pixel-art game that can turn crisp blocks into streaks, especially during a quick turn. Set motion blur to off or low first. Bethesda’s Redfall guide describes four levels—off, low, medium, and high—so use the lowest level that does not cause discomfort. Camera shake can be reduced or disabled independently; doing so preserves the visual event while removing the physical jolt.
Check head bob, flashing, and field of view
Head bob repeatedly moves the camera even when your input is steady. Disable it or choose the smallest available value if walking causes nausea. Reduce flashing effects when the game provides a toggle, particularly for repeated strobe-like damage, lightning, or alarm effects. If a field-of-view slider exists, make small changes: an extremely narrow view can feel claustrophobic and amplify apparent motion when turning, while an extreme wide view can introduce edge distortion. Keep the value at which you can track the center and edges without discomfort.
Use a stable fixation point when helpful
A persistent reticle or small center marker can give your eyes a stable reference during camera movement. Enable it for a session and check whether it reduces disorientation; remove it if it becomes distracting or changes how you want the horror to feel. This is a comfort choice, not a requirement for accurate aiming in every game.
Support color-vision differences
Color-blind filters remap hues, but they cannot guarantee that every symbol remains distinct. Select a filter only after checking the actual puzzles, key colors, enemy indicators, and inventory icons in your game. Walk through an area containing all relevant states rather than trusting a sample swatch in the menu.

When two states still look alike, supplement the filter with non-color cues. Prefer an icon, hatch pattern, shape, text label, sound, or brightness difference. A warning that changes from a dim outline to a bright filled shape is easier to detect than one that merely shifts from green to red. If a filter makes dark scenes too similar, revisit brightness and contrast after selecting it; color remapping can alter perceived luminance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Build presets for different priorities
A single configuration rarely suits every player or every display. Save distinct profiles when the game allows it, or record the values in a note so you can switch deliberately rather than changing several options from memory.
| Preset | Pixel treatment | Readability | Motion and atmosphere | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pixel-faithful | Native or integer scaling, 4:3 correction where appropriate, nearest-neighbor, intentional dithering | Subtitles on with a background; standard font size if clearly readable | CRT effects off or very low; blur and shake at the lowest comfortable level | Players who want the authored low-resolution look |
| Readable horror | Integer scaling when possible; a mild filter only if text needs it | Larger text, speaker names, high-contrast panel, longer notifications | Blur, shake, head bob, and flashing reduced; stable reticle available | Dark scenes, small displays, or players who miss clues |
| Motion-comfort | Whichever scaling keeps edges stable during turns | Large, high-contrast captions and unclipped safe-area placement | Motion blur off, shake and head bob off, flashing reduced, moderate field of view | Players sensitive to camera movement |
| CRT style | Nearest-neighbor with a restrained scanline or mask layer | Verify subtitles and icons after every effect change | Bloom, fog, or depth of field only when silhouettes remain clear | Players prioritizing period-display atmosphere |
These names are personal labels, not standardized game modes. The underlying controls and ranges differ by engine, platform, and version.
Apply settings in a repeatable order
- Open the display or graphics menu. Note the current resolution, scaling mode, aspect-ratio option, filtering, dithering, CRT controls, blur, depth of field, bloom, fog, shadows, and color-lightmap settings.
- Set geometry first. Choose native or integer scaling, apply the correct aspect ratio for the game’s original presentation, and select nearest-neighbor. Restart the game if the menu says the change requires it.
- Calibrate the dark range. Use the built-in test image. Adjust brightness or gamma until the specified dark sample is barely visible, then verify a moving scene containing a silhouette, path, item, and warning.
- Configure text. Turn on subtitles, choose a readable size, add the background or outline, show speaker names, and extend notification duration. Check a line over both dark and bright backgrounds.
- Remove motion triggers. Set blur and shake to off or low, reduce head bob and flashing, and test a full turn and a short walk. Adjust the field of view only after those effects are comfortable.
- Add style effects one at a time. Enable a low CRT layer, bloom, depth of field, or extra dithering only if you can still read text and identify geometry. Keep the last comfortable value.
- Check color cues. Apply a color-vision filter if needed, then verify every color-coded puzzle, status indicator, and enemy warning with its alternate icon or label.
- Play for several minutes. Some problems appear only during movement, combat, or a transition. Pause and change one setting at a time so you know which control solved or caused the problem.
Troubleshoot common visual problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Pixels shimmer while the camera moves | Non-integer scaling, a mismatched aspect ratio, or a strong post-process filter | Return to integer scaling, correct the aspect ratio, and disable scanlines, sharpening, or other overlays before testing again |
| Characters look too wide or too thin | A 4:3 source is being stretched, or a correction is applied twice | Use the game’s original-aspect option and ensure the display driver is not adding another stretch |
| Subtitles disappear into the background | Low contrast, a mask or scanline layer, or a short notification duration | Add a background or outline, lower the CRT layer, enlarge the font, and extend the duration |
| Dark rooms are unreadable | Brightness or gamma is too low, display contrast is crushing shadows, or fog and bloom are obscuring edges | Re-run the game’s calibration image, inspect a moving scene, and reduce obscuring effects before raising brightness further |
| The image looks gray and the horror mood is gone | Brightness or gamma is too high, or contrast is too low | Lower the control slightly and verify that paths, silhouettes, icons, and warnings remain visible |
| Turning causes nausea or eye strain | Motion blur, camera shake, head bob, flashing, or an uncomfortable field of view | Disable blur and shake, reduce bob and flashing, then make a small field-of-view adjustment |
| Color-coded clues remain confusing | The selected filter does not separate the game’s particular hues | Try another filter and look for shape, icon, label, sound, or brightness-based cues; do not depend on color alone |
| CRT effects look good in a screenshot but not in play | Scanlines, masks, bloom, or depth of field are removing detail in motion | Lower each effect independently and judge it while walking, reading, and inspecting an item |
Run a final accessibility check before committing
- Can you identify a dark silhouette against its background without increasing brightness until the entire scene is gray?
- Can you read two lines of subtitles over a bright effect and a dark corridor?
- Do subtitles remain visible after scanlines, masks, bloom, or depth of field are enabled?
- Can you distinguish every warning, item state, and puzzle state without color being the only cue?
- Can you turn, walk, and complete a short combat encounter without discomfort?
- Are the first and last characters of interface text inside the display’s safe area?
- Does the chosen aspect ratio preserve circular objects and character proportions?
- Do pixel edges remain stable when the camera moves, not just when the game is paused?
If an answer is no, change the smallest number of controls needed and repeat the same test. The most atmospheric preset is the one that leaves the game’s visual information usable for you.
What these settings cannot solve
Graphics options cannot correct a game that omits captions, provides unreadable text, or communicates a required puzzle state only through color. They also cannot make every display equally accurate. When a title lacks a needed control, use the nearest in-game alternative—such as a subtitle background, larger interface scale, or reduced effects—and document the limitation for your own setup. External magnification or display changes may help some players, but no particular monitor, controller, headset, or magnifier is required for these recommendations.
Settings also vary by game, engine, platform, and version. Menu names and available ranges may differ even between editions of the same title. Treat the values above as starting points, inspect your own menus, and validate the result in motion.
