There is no single best GoPro for everyone. For a mainstream action camera, WIRED recommends the HERO13 Black; for GoPro’s highest-resolution standard capture, it points to the Mission 1 Pro; and for 360-degree footage that you can reframe later, Tom’s Guide recommends the MAX2. First choose the camera format and workflow you need, then compare models within that category.
GoPro’s US camera catalog, checked October 2, 2026, lists HERO13 Black, HERO12 Black, Mission 1 cameras, MAX2, MAX, LIT HERO, and HERO. Names, availability, and product details can vary by region and change over time. Check GoPro’s current US camera catalog before buying.
Which kind of GoPro should you buy?
Start with the footage you want to make—not a resolution number or a universal ranking. GoPro’s range includes standard action cameras, 360 cameras, and compact models. A 360 camera records a different kind of footage from a conventional action camera, while a small camera may suit a lightweight setup better than a model with more features.
- Choose a standard action camera for conventional point-of-view footage, such as activities recorded from a helmet or chest mount.
- Choose a 360 camera if you want to capture the whole scene and select the framing later. That flexibility comes with an editing step.
- Consider a compact model if size and a simpler, lower-cost setup matter more than the capabilities of a flagship camera.
GoPro’s camera comparison tool can compare up to three models by features, modes, design, and dimensions. Use it to check candidates after deciding which format fits your workflow.

Best for most people: HERO13 Black
WIRED names the HERO13 Black its pick for most people. TechRadar’s Alex Whitelock reported on January 21, 2026, that TechRadar rated it 4.5 out of 5 after testing, praising its 5.3K video and battery life. That is TechRadar’s individual rating, not a cross-publication average. The same report lists 5.3K video and 27MP photos as specifications; those figures are not themselves test results. WIRED’s GoPro recommendations · TechRadar’s January 2026 rating report
The HERO13 Black is a sensible starting point if you want a conventional action camera and do not specifically need 360 capture or the Mission 1 Pro’s higher-resolution recording. TechRadar describes it as an iterative update and notes that its 5.3K video and 27MP photo sensor configuration is shared with earlier generations. That is TechRadar’s assessment, not an official GoPro claim about the camera’s value for every owner.

Best for highest-resolution standard capture: Mission 1 Pro
WIRED names the Mission 1 Pro its top GoPro and describes it as capable of 8K at 60 fps. Treat that as a source-attributed capability: the precise available modes and any crop or other conditions should be checked against GoPro’s current specifications before purchase. WIRED also notes the camera’s price premium and says the HERO13 Black will be enough for many people. A higher resolution can provide more room to crop in editing, but that does not make it the best fit if size, cost, or a simpler workflow matters more. WIRED’s GoPro recommendations
Best for 360 video and reframing: MAX2
GoPro describes the MAX2 as a 360 camera with 8K video. Tom’s Guide recommends it for professional 360 use and highlights the ability to reframe footage into different fields of view in post-production. That flexibility is useful when you cannot decide on a single viewpoint while filming, but it means choosing the final framing is part of the editing workflow. GoPro’s catalog description establishes the 8K figure; confirm the exact modes and frame rates on its current product specifications before relying on a particular recording setting. Best for a compact or lower-cost setup: HERO or LIT HERO
GoPro’s US catalog lists both HERO and LIT HERO, but the bare name “HERO” does not necessarily identify the same model in every region or year. Check the exact product page and regional listing rather than assuming that similarly named cameras share specifications. WIRED describes the compact HERO model it discusses as cheaper and less capable than the HERO13 Black, and says stabilization is applied in the app for that model. Do not generalize that stabilization detail to every camera carrying the HERO name. GoPro’s US camera catalog · WIRED’s GoPro recommendations
Best lower-cost upgrade from an older flagship: HERO11 Black
TechRadar identifies the HERO11 Black as a possible lower-cost alternative to the HERO13 Black. It is an older model, so its price and availability are especially dependent on current stock and seller; compare the actual offer with the newer camera rather than treating a past price as current. What to compare before choosing
Compare cameras against your intended footage and the rest of your setup. A higher resolution can offer more room to crop, but it is only one part of the decision: camera format, editing, size, cost, and compatibility can matter more for a particular buyer.
- Camera type: standard action or 360. Decide whether you want to frame the shot while recording or select a view afterward.
- Resolution and frame rate: identify the modes you actually need, then verify them on the exact model’s current specifications. A headline resolution does not, by itself, establish every mode or recording condition.
- Size and dimensions: check whether the camera suits your intended mounting position and how much bulk you are willing to carry.
- Lens options: compare available lens choices and accessories for the exact camera. TechRadar discusses HERO13 lens mods, but compatibility should be confirmed before purchase.
- Stabilization and editing: check whether stabilization is handled in-camera or through an app, and whether 360 footage requires the post-production steps you are willing to do.
- Mounts and batteries: verify compatibility with your existing kit before assuming accessories will transfer between models.
- Price and bundle: compare current regional prices and what is included. Buying-guide prices and deal articles are time-sensitive.
If a recording mode calls for a particular microSD card speed, follow the exact camera and mode requirements rather than buying a card based only on capacity. TechRadar discusses memory-card speed in its GoPro buying guide. The same model-specific check applies to batteries, mounts, lens mods, and other accessories.

When another brand may suit you better
A GoPro-specific recommendation is not the same as a claim that GoPro is best across the entire action-camera market. Tom’s Guide names the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro as its favorite action camera overall in its 2026 guide, while still assigning the HERO13 Black a professional-use role. For 360 cameras, it says the Insta360 X5 offers more for many users. Those are Tom’s Guide’s category judgments; compare the alternatives if brand is not a requirement. Tom’s Guide’s 2026 GoPro guide
