There is no single, verified like-for-like Google Play replacement for every Android user in India. The right choice depends on the app you need and your device: F-Droid focuses on free and open-source apps, Galaxy Store is for Samsung devices, and some developers offer downloads from their own websites. Amazon Appstore is no longer supported on Android phones. Any download outside Google Play needs extra care: Google warns that apps from unknown sources can put your device and personal information at risk.

These options serve different purposes; they are not interchangeable stores with the same catalog, regional availability, payments, or support. A comprehensive current comparison of those details for India is not established, so check the exact app and source before installing.

What to check before choosing a store
Before installing, verify that the source actually serves your device and region and carries the app you want. Then check who publishes the app, how the source verifies the app’s integrity, who handles updates, and where payment and support responsibility lie. A store’s name or popularity alone does not answer those questions.
Google recommends Google Play, while noting that Android users can obtain apps elsewhere. Google says Play Protect checks potentially harmful apps, warns users, and may remove them. It does not certify every external store or app as safe. Google’s third-party-store guidance says downloads and payments from external stores are managed by those stores, not Google Play; that guidance concerns distribution in the United States, so it should not be treated as a statement of availability or payment arrangements in India. How to install apps more safely
Google’s warning is direct: “Important: If you download apps from unknown sources, your device and personal information can be at risk.” This does not mean every external download is malicious; it means the source and app require scrutiny.
- Use the genuine official store or follow a download link from the developer’s verified website. Check the domain carefully.
- Inspect the publisher identity, requested permissions, and the app’s update status before installing.
- Keep Android and installed apps updated, and retain Play Protect protections. Google says information about apps installed outside Play may be sent to Google to help protect against harmful apps; it may include logs, URLs related to the app, device ID, Android version, and IP address. - Do not treat an APK file as trustworthy just because it installs successfully. Prefer sources that explain provenance and check signatures or hashes.
For F-Droid specifically
F-Droid recommends installing its client rather than downloading a standalone APK. Its listing describes update notifications, optional automatic updates, compatibility filtering, and checks of repository index signatures and APK hashes. The project also describes its default repository as containing libre software and explains its own build and publishing processes. Does Android’s developer verification rollout apply in India?
Google says the first phase of developer-verification protections took effect on September 30, 2026 for participating stores on certified Android devices in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand. The named participating stores include Google Play, HONOR App Market, OPPO App Market, Samsung Galaxy Store, Palm Store, vivo V-Appstore, and Xiaomi GetApps.
