For iPhone and CarPlay, start with Apple Maps; for community-reported traffic, consider Waze; and for downloaded maps, compare Apple Maps, HERE WeGo, and TomTom GO Navigation in your region. None is established here as universally more accurate than Google Maps.
How to choose a driving navigation app
First match the app to your device and car, then check the routes and countries where you will use it. The key trade-off is between connected, frequently updated road information and the ability to navigate with downloaded maps when cellular service is unavailable.
- Phone and car: Check whether the app supports your phone and whether your vehicle supports the relevant in-car system, such as CarPlay.
- Connectivity: Decide whether you need downloaded maps and directions or expect to have mobile data while driving.
- Local coverage: Confirm that maps and the features you want are available in the places you drive.
- Traffic information: If live reports matter, consider how much the app relies on connected use and community activity.
Google Maps alternatives at a glance
| App | Best fit | Offline and connectivity | Check before choosing |

Which alternative fits your driving?
Apple Maps: a natural starting point for iPhone and CarPlay
Apple says Maps in iOS 17 and later can use downloaded offline maps for place information and navigation, including turn-by-turn driving directions and estimated arrival times. Maps take up device storage, are not available everywhere, and a map downloaded for one region is not meant to cover every destination. See Apple’s offline maps guidance for supported areas and details.
Apple also documents turn-by-turn directions through CarPlay. Its described CarPlay directions workflow requires an internet connection, so do not assume that every CarPlay function works offline just because you have downloaded a map. Traffic conditions and estimated travel times are not available in every region. Check Apple’s CarPlay directions guidance along with the offline-map information, and confirm CarPlay availability for your region and vehicle.

Waze: for connected, community-reported road information
Waze is designed around community-sourced traffic and navigation information for private cars, motorcycles, and taxis. Waze Help explains that “By driving around with Waze open on your device, you share real-time information.” That is the app’s own description of its model, not an independent measure of how accurate or timely reports are on a particular route. Waze encourages drivers to have a mobile data plan for use on the go; local reporting activity and data access therefore matter. See Waze’s availability guidance and Waze’s description of the service.
HERE WeGo: an offline option to compare
HERE’s official help lists offline maps, car guidance, and real-time journey updates. Those features make HERE WeGo worth comparing if you want a dedicated navigation app that can also work with downloaded maps. The feature list does not establish complete country coverage or guarantee that every capability is available in every version. Check HERE WeGo’s official help page for the service details, then verify availability for your routes.

TomTom GO Navigation: check current terms before relying on it
TomTom describes GO Navigation as offering downloadable maps for offline driving, with regions available to download as needed. The announcement documenting this is dated September 1, 2020; its subscription prices are historical and should not be treated as current. Check the current app listing and terms for your country and platform before deciding whether its price, trial, offline map coverage, or in-car support suits you. See TomTom’s announcement.

There is no controlled route-accuracy comparison established here, so this shortlist is organized by features and use cases rather than a ranking of route quality. Check these details before your first trip
- Confirm device and vehicle support. Check the app’s current listing and your vehicle’s documentation for phone compatibility and CarPlay or other in-car support.
- Check the destination area. Verify that the map coverage and navigation features you need are available in each country or region on your route.
- Prepare for offline use, if needed. Download the relevant maps over a reliable connection and make sure you have enough device storage. Do not assume one regional download covers a larger trip.
- Understand data needs. If you plan to use Waze for live reports, make sure mobile data is available and consider whether reporting activity is likely to be useful on your route.
- Check current terms. For TomTom GO in particular, verify current price, trial or subscription terms, supported regions, and compatibility in the app listing for your market.
