If you want a new Google-powered smart-home device, start with the room and job: choose the Google Home Speaker (2026) for a voice-first speaker, the Nest Hub (2nd gen) for a touchscreen control center, or the Nest Mini (2nd gen) for a compact speaker. Google is moving compatible homes from Google Assistant to Gemini for Home, so check device firmware and local rollout before buying for a particular feature.

What to know before choosing a Google Assistant device

  • Google is rolling out Gemini for Home as the voice assistant on compatible speakers and displays. Once a home upgrades, Google says it cannot switch back to Google Assistant. Google’s Gemini for Home help page explains rollout and compatibility.
  • Google’s 2026 Google Home Speaker is its first device built for Gemini for Home. The company announced a $99.99 launch price and June 25, 2026 shelf date; that is an announced launch price, not a verified current street price. Google’s announcement describes its features.
  • Gemini for Home availability depends on country, language, home rollout, and firmware. Some capabilities, including Gemini Live, require Google Home Premium on compatible devices.
  • Smart-home accessories do not all need to be replaced with Matter models. For a Matter accessory, however, setup and remote control require an appropriate Matter hub; Thread-based devices additionally need a hub with a Thread border router.

Which Google-powered device fits your home?

Device Best fit What Google says it does Important qualification
Google Home Speaker (2026) A new, voice-first speaker Google describes balanced 360-degree sound, conversational interactions, privacy features, and pairing with Google TV Streamer. Google calls it the first device built for Gemini for Home. The $99.99 price and June 25, 2026 shelf date were announced by Google, not verified as current live pricing. Descriptions are company claims, not independent sound or privacy tests.
Nest Hub (2nd gen) A touchscreen for visual help and home controls View schedules and reminders, and control compatible devices from a dashboard. It is also a listed Gemini for Home device, subject to firmware and rollout. Gemini for Home requires Fuchsia firmware 28 or higher on displays.
Nest Mini (2nd gen) A compact speaker for a table or wall Voice control, music, timers, and control of compatible smart lights. Google also identifies it as a Matter hub for Wi-Fi Matter devices. For Thread Matter accessories, the hub must include a Thread border router; do not assume every Google speaker provides one.
Nest Audio A voice speaker in a room where you want a larger speaker format Listed by Google for the complete Gemini for Home voice assistant, subject to firmware. Google specifies Cast firmware 3.76 or higher for speakers. The reviewed sources do not provide independent comparative sound or response tests.
Nest Hub Max A display for video calls and household information Google describes video calls, checking on the home, calendars, photos, video, and music; it is listed for complete Gemini for Home, subject to firmware. Google specifies Fuchsia firmware 28 or higher for displays.

Google’s speaker and display help materials also cover the first-generation Nest Hub and Google Home Mini (1st gen) as eligible for the complete Gemini for Home voice assistant, subject to minimum firmware. Google lists Nest Wifi point, Google Home Max, Google Home, and third-party speakers as supporting most Gemini for Home features, but not Gemini Live. See the complete compatibility details before relying on a specific feature.

Choose a speaker or a display

Choose a speaker for voice, music, and timers

A speaker makes sense when you mainly want spoken requests, music, alarms, timers, and smart-home commands, without needing a screen. The Google Home Speaker (2026) is Google’s newest purpose-built Gemini for Home speaker. Nest Mini is the compact option for a table or wall, while Nest Audio is another compatible speaker. The official material establishes their roles and compatibility, not a tested ranking for sound, microphone pickup, speed, or value.

Choose a display when information should be visible

A Nest Hub lets you see schedules, reminders, and controls rather than hearing them only by voice. Nest Hub Max adds the uses Google lists for video calls, checking on the home, calendars, photos, video, and music. A display is the more natural choice for a shared dashboard or visual information; decide based on whether those screen functions matter in the room.

Match Matter accessories to the right hub

Google Home connects with thousands of smart-home products, and Google advises looking for the “Works with Google Home” badge. Existing Works with Google Home products remain supported; switching to Matter does not require replacing every accessory. Google describes Matter as an interoperability standard, but compatibility still depends on the accessory, hub, and connection type.

  • 16 Sleep Sounds, Fully Customizable: Choose from 16 built-in sleep sounds that play straight from the speaker with no phone, no app, and no subscription. Set a 15, 30, or 60-minute sleep timer and the sound fades out by itself. Want a different library? Connect it to any PC with the included USB-C cable and swap out every sound stored on the device.
  1. Check the accessory’s product information for Matter support and whether it uses Wi-Fi or Thread.
  2. For a Matter device, make sure you have a Matter-capable hub to set it up and control or automate it remotely. Google identifies Nest Hub (2nd gen) and Nest Mini as examples that provide this connection.
  3. If the Matter device uses Thread, verify that the hub has a built-in Thread border router. A speaker being Google-compatible does not by itself establish that it can serve as a Thread border router.
  4. Confirm the specific accessory and region fit your home. Google features the Yale Smart Lock with Matter as a partner example, but that does not establish fit for every door or region.

Google does not give an exact dated count for the “thousands” of products in the reviewed compatibility material. Treat the phrase as a broad description, not a precise inventory figure. See Google’s Matter and Google Home guidance for hub and protocol details.

Make the decision

  • Pick the Google Home Speaker (2026) if you want Google’s current voice-first speaker and are comfortable checking its live price and local Gemini rollout.
  • Pick Nest Hub (2nd gen) if seeing schedules, reminders, and smart-home controls is more useful than having only a speaker.
  • Pick Nest Mini (2nd gen) if compact placement matters and your needs center on basic voice tasks or Wi-Fi Matter hub functionality.
  • Consider Nest Audio or Nest Hub Max when their speaker or display role suits the room, while checking firmware and the exact Gemini feature you want.

These are role-based recommendations from Google’s product and compatibility descriptions, not lab-tested rankings. The available official information does not establish which device sounds best, hears commands most reliably, responds fastest, protects privacy most effectively, or offers the best value.
