For most Android users, Gemini is the clearest next step from Google Assistant. It is Google’s current mobile assistant experience, though some familiar quick voice actions still rely on Google Assistant. If you have a Samsung Galaxy, Bixby offers a separate route for controlling phone settings, while Perplexity is available through Samsung’s Galaxy-specific support path. These options suit different jobs; there is no reliable basis here for naming one the best overall.

These are distinctions in official product descriptions, not results from a controlled comparison. The sources do not establish which option gives more accurate answers, responds faster, or is more private or reliable.
Google Gemini: the natural choice if you want to stay with Google
Google presents Gemini as its Android mobile assistant experience: you can download it on Android or switch it to serve as your primary mobile assistant. Google has also described extensions across services including YouTube, Maps, Gmail, and Spotify. Those integrations make Gemini the first option to consider if your main goal is assistance tied to Google apps.
Do not assume every Assistant action has moved to Gemini. Google’s Gemini help documentation says some familiar quick voice actions still rely on Google Assistant. If a particular hands-free command matters to you, check whether Gemini supports it on your phone rather than assuming the changeover preserves it.

What Google has said about the transition
On March 14, 2025, Google announced that it was upgrading more mobile users from Google Assistant to Gemini and said that classic Assistant would later that year stop being accessible on most mobile devices and unavailable for new mobile app-store downloads. That was a dated plan, not confirmation that the change completed universally. Google’s announcement does not establish the status for every device, country, or user: Google’s March 2025 announcement.

Samsung Galaxy options: Bixby and Perplexity
These are not general Android replacements. They are most relevant if you own a supported Galaxy phone and want to explore Samsung’s device-specific assistant features.
Bixby for Galaxy settings and features
Samsung’s February 20, 2026 announcement describes a beta of its latest Bixby in One UI 8.5. It presents Bixby as a conversational device agent for controlling Galaxy settings and features with natural language. Treat the beta and its rollout as changeable; the announcement does not establish universal availability across Galaxy phones.

Samsung cautions that Bixby may not recognize all accents, dialects, or expressions, and that results can vary with pronunciation, voice level, and background conditions. Confirm support on your model and One UI version before relying on a particular command.
Perplexity through Samsung’s Galaxy route
Samsung support describes how to enable Perplexity on Galaxy phones, while Samsung’s Bixby announcement connects Perplexity to real-time web search. This is a Samsung-specific route, not evidence that the same setup is available on every Android phone. Follow the instructions for your device and check how it launches. In particular, Samsung warns that assigning Bixby to the side button means the button activates Bixby instead.

How to choose and check compatibility
- Identify the job. Decide whether you need Google-service integration, control of Galaxy settings, web-search answers, or a familiar quick voice action. “Alternative” can mean a different app, a way to control the phone, or simply a different style of voice interaction.
- Check your phone and software. Note the phone brand and model, Android or One UI version, and region. For Samsung options, confirm that the relevant Galaxy feature is supported on your specific device.
- Check launch and default settings. Review which assistant is selected as the primary mobile assistant and what the side button is assigned to do. A button shortcut may launch a different assistant from the one you expect.
- Test the exact task. Try the command or workflow you actually need—for example, a Google-app action, a Galaxy setting change, a web search, or a quick hands-free command. Do not infer support for one task from an assistant’s general product description.
Someone looking for traditional quick voice actions without a chatbot-style experience may have a different priority from someone seeking conversational web answers. The available official descriptions do not establish a general non-AI replacement that matches Google Assistant’s full range of functions.
No new device or accessory is necessary just to compare the documented software options. Availability depends on the assistant, phone, software, and region rather than on buying a separate product.
