Which Gears of War games matter most before E-Day?
The original trilogy is the best fit if your goal is to understand the returning characters and the war against the Locust. E-Day follows young Marcus and Dom as the Locust Horde first emerges, so the original games provide later context for the people and conflict at the center of the new story.

Add Gears of War: Judgment if you want a story set around the opening period of the war. Because it covers the immediate aftermath of Emergence Day, it is a neighboring story rather than essential setup for an E-Day origin campaign.

Are Gears 4 and Gears 5 worth playing first?
Only if you also want the later saga. The official catalog frames Gears of War 4 around JD Fenix, Kait, and Del, and Gears 5 around Kait. Those games broaden your knowledge of the franchise after the original trilogy, but they are less directly connected to E-Day’s young Marcus-and-Dom premise.
Which version of the original should you choose?
The official Gears site describes Gears of War: Reloaded as the landmark original, remastered and modernized. It is the current remastered-original option identified in the official catalog. Check the listing for your platform and region before buying; confirm that you are selecting the original campaign rather than a different entry.

What to expect from E-Day
Xbox describes E-Day as a campaign about Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago as the Locust first emerge, set fourteen years before the original Gears of War. The Coalition’s Creative Director Matt Searcy said the story stays with Bravo Squad’s perspective: “We never leave Bravo Squad for the entire game. The entire story is told from their perspective. Even though there’s an event going on all over the world, we never jump anywhere else. You only see what they see and learn what they learn.” Xbox Wire’s June 2026 feature carries the interview. For the recurring combat style, The Coalition’s gameplay update describes cover-to-cover movement as central to Gears combat.
