For a simple computer or phone broadcast, start with a clear microphone and a steady, well-framed camera; add headphones to monitor audio. A webcam is useful for computer streams, while a tripod or selfie stick can steady a phone. Gaming and more involved productions may call for an encoder, capture hardware, a mixer, or additional cameras—but those are upgrades, not entry requirements.
YouTube’s own guidance is that you do not need expensive equipment: start with what you have, then improve the weakest part of your setup. The categories below follow YouTube’s official setup guidance, not product testing or brand rankings.
Choose gear for the way you will stream
YouTube supports mobile, webcam, and encoder-based livestreaming. First choose the workflow; then buy only the equipment it needs.
| Streaming setup | Useful gear | What to prioritize |
|---|---|---|
| Phone-based mobile stream | Phone; tripod or selfie stick; optional external microphone | Stable framing, clear audio, and a reliable network signal. |
| Computer webcam stream | Webcam, microphone, headphones | Clear speech and a camera angle that works for your space. |
| Encoder-based gaming or creator stream | Microphone, webcam or camera, headphones; optional green screen | Compatibility with your encoder and the ability to monitor sound and stream health. |
| Multi-camera or professional production | Multiple cameras and microphones, mixer, hardware encoder | Use these when the production genuinely needs multiple sources or more control—not as a basic requirement. |
YouTube lists microphones, webcams, and headphones as common equipment for casual streams, and identifies tripods or selfie sticks as ways to avoid camera shake on mobile. It also describes mixers, multiple cameras, and hardware encoders as advanced setup options. See YouTube’s live streaming tips, filming tips for live, and ways to live stream.

What to buy first: audio, camera, and monitoring
Microphone: the most useful first upgrade for spoken streams
If viewers need to understand you, prioritize a microphone over cosmetic upgrades. YouTube says using a microphone can improve audio and includes microphones among typical streaming equipment. A USB microphone is one category to consider for a computer setup; the available guidance does not establish a best model. For a phone stream, check that any external microphone you consider is compatible with your phone and connection.
Camera or webcam: match it to your workflow
A webcam is a straightforward fit for a computer stream. A phone can serve as the camera for a mobile broadcast, while an encoder-based production may use a webcam or camera and compatible capture hardware. Check compatibility with the software or encoder before buying; support varies by device.
Headphones: monitor what viewers hear
Headphones let you monitor the stream audio while you broadcast. YouTube lists them as common gear for casual streams. They are especially useful when your setup includes separate audio sources or when you need to catch a problem before viewers do.

Tripod or selfie stick: keep mobile framing steady
A stable mount reduces camera shake and frees you from holding the phone throughout a stream. YouTube recommends a tripod, selfie stick, or other accessories to stabilize mobile video. Position the phone before going live and check that the framing remains usable when you move naturally.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhen you need an encoder, mixer, or more than one camera
An encoder workflow is appropriate for broadcasts built around gameplay, a computer screen, or more complex audio and video sources. The equipment can include an external microphone, a webcam or camera, headphones, and—if it solves a real production need—a green screen, mixer, additional camera, or hardware encoder. YouTube supports encoder-based streaming, but the necessary hardware depends on the devices and software you choose.
Do not treat a more elaborate rig as automatically better. Extra sources add setup and monitoring work. Start with the camera and audio sources your broadcast requires, then add equipment only to solve a specific limitation.

Check the internet connection and encoder settings before buying
Camera and microphone quality cannot compensate for an unstable connection or incompatible stream settings. YouTube recommends choosing a quality your internet connection can reliably sustain, testing upload speed, testing with audio and movement similar to the real broadcast, and monitoring stream health while live. Measure upload capacity rather than assuming download speed tells you whether you can stream.
Selected YouTube H.264 bitrate recommendations
The figures below are YouTube’s recommended H.264 encoder bitrates, not universal values for every codec or a guarantee that your connection can sustain them. YouTube’s recommendations differ for H.265 (HEVC) and AV1.

Encoder and connection checks
- YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1, supports up to 60 fps, and recommends constant bitrate encoding.
- Use a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says it should not exceed four seconds. It recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport.
- Confirm your camera, capture device, and encoder support the resolution, frame rate, and codec you intend to use.
- YouTube’s filming guidance recommends Ethernet for computer streaming. It says outbound capacity should account for the primary stream, a backup, and an additional 20%. Run an upload test under realistic conditions rather than relying on that margin alone.
- Test before the event with motion and audio similar to the actual stream, then monitor stream health during the broadcast.
Settings guidance describes what to configure; it cannot guarantee that your network, computer, or other devices will sustain the chosen quality. YouTube’s relevant references are encoder settings and filming tips.
Mobile livestream eligibility is separate from the gear
Before buying equipment specifically for a phone-based livestream, check whether your channel is eligible. As stated in YouTube Help guidance accessed in 2026, mobile live streaming requires at least 50 subscribers, channel verification, no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and a supported device. Initial activation can take up to 24 hours. Platform requirements can change, so confirm the current rules on YouTube’s mobile livestream guidance before relying on them.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Plan the viewer experience as well as the equipment
YouTube offers latency and DVR options that affect how a stream feels to viewers. Lower latency reduces delay but can increase playback buffering; DVR lets viewers pause and rewind. Choose based on whether interaction speed or playback flexibility matters more for your broadcast, then test the setting with your connection and audience needs in mind. See YouTube’s latency and DVR guidance.

Prepare and troubleshoot before going live
- Check channel and device readiness. Confirm the selected workflow is available to your channel, especially for mobile streaming, and verify device compatibility.
- Secure the camera. Set up the webcam or mount the phone, check framing, and ensure the camera will not shift during the broadcast.
- Test audio. Speak at the volume you expect to use, monitor it with headphones, and confirm any external microphone is connected and selected.
- Run a realistic connection test. Check upload speed, use Ethernet for a computer stream where practical, and test with the intended resolution, motion, and audio.
- Verify encoder settings. Match resolution and frame rate to your setup, select a supported codec and transport, use constant bitrate, and set a two-second keyframe interval.
- Check stream health while broadcasting. Watch for warnings and respond to the actual bottleneck instead of immediately adding gear.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely issue to check | Practical fix |
|---|---|---|
| Shaky or constantly shifting mobile video | The phone is handheld or poorly mounted. | Use a stable tripod or selfie stick and recheck framing before going live. |
| Speech is difficult to hear | The microphone or its selection, placement, or connection may be the issue. | Check the active audio source and connection; test a compatible external microphone and monitor audio with headphones. |
| Stream buffers or loses stability | The selected stream quality may exceed reliable upload capacity. | Run an upload test, test at the intended quality, and choose a setting your connection can sustain. Use Ethernet for computer streaming where possible. |
| Encoder or capture device does not work with the planned format | Resolution, frame rate, codec, or transport may not be supported by one part of the setup. | Check device compatibility and align settings across the camera, capture hardware, encoder, and YouTube guidance. |
| Mobile live option is unavailable | The channel may not meet current mobile eligibility requirements, or activation may still be pending. | Review YouTube’s current eligibility guidance and allow for the stated initial activation period. |
Copyright, reused content, and live-stream responsibility
Gear and encoder settings do not grant permission to use music, video, or other copyrighted material. Use content you own or are authorized to broadcast, and review YouTube’s live-stream rules before an event. A technically successful stream can still face platform restrictions if its content violates applicable policies. Start with YouTube’s live streaming guidance and its current copyright and monetization policies.
