Which gaming laptop should you choose?
Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 (2026): best compact gaming laptop
The G14 is the shortlist’s portable option: a 14-inch laptop that can still be configured with a high-tier mobile GPU. Tom’s Guide’s September 2026 roundup describes a 14-inch 2880×1800 OLED screen with a 120Hz refresh rate and lists configurations up to RTX 5080. That roundup’s top configuration should not be confused with the RTX 5070 Ti unit in Tom’s Guide’s October 1, 2026 review.
In that October review, the RTX 5070 Ti unit scored 44 fps in Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p with RT Ultra settings and 49 fps in Black Myth: Wukong at 1080p Cinematic. Those are results from the review’s particular test setup, not a direct comparison with the other laptops here. Tom’s Guide also recorded 8 hours 32 minutes in its battery test and reported loud fans under load; battery life in other workloads can differ.

Choose it if: you want a smaller gaming laptop and value a high-resolution OLED screen. Consider a larger machine if sustained heavy gaming, quieter operation, or a bigger display matters more than portability.
Razer Blade 16 (2026): best premium thin-and-light pick
Tom’s Guide’s premium pick pairs a 16-inch 2.5K OLED panel at 240Hz with an RTX 5090 in its tested configuration. At 1080p, maximum settings and DLSS off, Tom’s Guide reports 65 fps in Cyberpunk 2077, 58 fps in Black Myth: Wukong and 182 fps in Shadow of the Tomb Raider. These are that publication’s results for the RTX 5090 model and should not be compared as a common lab ranking against results from other reviewers.
Tom’s Guide gives a broad $2,399–$5,599 range from starting to top configuration, so confirm which GPU and other parts that price buys. TechRadar describes a stock 2026 configuration with RTX 5070 Ti and a 1TB SSD, with RTX 5080 and memory upgrades available; retail SKUs can differ. Tom’s Guide warns that the slim chassis gets loud and hot under pressure.

MSI Katana 15 HX: best budget 1080p candidate
Tom’s Hardware calls its tested MSI Katana 15 HX configuration its best truly budget model among the laptops it tested. The reviewed machine paired an RTX 5050 with a 14th Gen Intel Core i7 HX processor and cost $999.99 as tested in 2026. In Tom’s Hardware’s 1080p review suite, it reached 91 fps in Shadow of the Tomb Raider, 30 fps in Cyberpunk 2077, 65 fps in Red Dead Redemption 2, 80 fps in Far Cry 6 and 76 fps in Borderlands 3. Treat these as results from that review’s tests, not a promise for every game, settings combination or current listing.
Tom’s Hardware notes that the Katana has slotted RAM and a replaceable SSD. That makes those parts worth checking against the exact SKU if you may upgrade later. The review’s test price is historical, so compare current listings rather than assuming the laptop still costs $999.99.
Asus TUF Gaming A16 (2026): best balanced budget alternative
PC Gamer’s UK-reviewed configuration combines a Ryzen 7 260, RTX 5050 with 8GB, 16GB DDR5 and a 1TB SSD with a 16.1-inch 1920×1200 display at 165Hz. PC Gamer lists that configuration at £1,260. Its separately reported US configuration costs $1,550 and has a 512GB SSD and a higher-resolution display, so the US and UK prices do not describe the same specification.

PC Gamer considers the laptop well-rounded but cautions that 16GB of RAM and an RTX 5050 may be less suitable for someone expecting a long service life from a demanding gaming machine. Confirm the panel, memory and storage on the local model before purchase.
Razer Blade 18 (2026): best 18-inch high-refresh alternative
Tom’s Hardware names the Blade 18 its best gaming laptop. The cited configuration includes an RTX 5090 Laptop GPU and Intel Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus processor. Its dual-mode 18-inch panel runs at 3840×2400 and 240Hz or 1920×1200 and 440Hz; using the higher refresh rate means switching to the lower resolution. The laptop weighs 7.06 pounds.
Tom’s Hardware lists a $3,999.99 starting price and says its tested configuration cost $5,399.99. The review praises performance, build, display flexibility and ports, while noting heat and a higher price than the previous year. Its size and weight make it better suited to a desk or occasional moves than frequent commuting.

How to compare gaming laptops before you buy
Match the configuration, not just the model family
A model name can cover substantially different hardware. Verify the exact GPU, RAM, SSD capacity and display resolution and refresh rate in the listing. The G14 roundup’s RTX 5080 option and the separate RTX 5070 Ti review unit illustrate why results or specifications for one configuration should not be assigned to every laptop in the family.
Read FPS figures with their test conditions
Benchmark numbers are useful only with context: game, resolution, graphics preset, upscaling or frame-generation state, power mode and GPU wattage can all affect results. The figures above come from different review suites, not one shared head-to-head test. For example, Tom’s Guide’s Blade 16 figures specify 1080p, maximum settings and DLSS off, while the G14 figures use their own named settings. Do not treat those FPS results as a direct ranking.
Balance display size against portability and noise
A 14-inch OLED laptop is easier to carry than an 18-inch desktop replacement, but compact performance can come with fan noise and workload-dependent battery life. Large models such as the Blade 18 and Scar 18 prioritize big screens and high-end configurations over travel convenience. Decide whether you will carry the laptop daily or mostly use it at a desk.
Check upgrade options and total value
For a budget model, compare the price with the memory and storage actually included, then see whether the reviewed machine allows upgrades. Tom’s Hardware describes the Katana 15 HX as having slotted RAM and a replaceable SSD. PC Gamer’s TUF A16 configuration has 16GB RAM, while its US and UK versions differ in SSD capacity and display resolution. A lower advertised price may reflect a different specification rather than a like-for-like deal.
