If you want to stay in Thedas, Dragon Age: Inquisition is the direct follow-up. None recreates the whole Veilguard experience, so the key difference is whether you want its relationships, setting, combat, or lore.
What should you play after Dragon Age: The Veilguard?
The Veilguard is a single-player RPG built around companions, choices, fantasy worldbuilding, and customizable combat. Electronic Arts describes three classes and the option to bring two companions on quests. Those ingredients overlap with several RPGs, but the feel changes considerably from game to game—especially when combat shifts from action to turn-based tactics. EA announced its release for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on October 31, 2024.

| Tactical fantasy party combat | Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition | Turn-based battles and a different world and tone. |
| Fantasy quests and exploration | The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt or Skyrim Special Edition | Less emphasis on a customizable hero leading a cinematic companion squad. |

| Open-world role-play in another setting | Cyberpunk 2077 | A science-fiction city and no traditional companion party. |
These are preference matches, not interchangeable versions of Veilguard. PlayStation’s Portuguese Veilguard page also lists several of these games as similar titles, while GamesRadar’s guide, updated February 5, 2025, recommends a wider range of RPGs based on different appeals. Check the platform and edition for your region before buying; availability can change.
For BioWare companions and dialogue: Mass Effect Legendary Edition
Mass Effect Legendary Edition is the clearest pick if what you miss is traveling with a cast, building relationships, and making choices across a story. It moves the formula from Thedas to science fiction, so expect alien worlds and a different kind of conflict rather than another fantasy adventure.

BioWare says the collection includes the single-player base content and more than 40 DLC from Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3, remastered and optimized for 4K Ultra HD. That makes it a substantial trilogy commitment, not a short standalone detour. The original games’ design also reflects an earlier era, which may feel different from Veilguard’s presentation and pacing. BioWare’s catalogue describes the collection’s contents.
For fantasy party role-play: Baldur’s Gate 3
Choose Baldur’s Gate 3 if you want a fantasy setting, distinctive companions, relationships, and choices that shape how events unfold. Its broad role-playing freedom makes it a strong match for players who valued shaping their character and story in Veilguard.

The important difference: combat is turn-based
Baldur’s Gate 3 is not an action-combat substitute. Its battles are turn-based, so you take time to consider positioning and actions rather than chaining real-time attacks. If Veilguard’s combat was the part you most want to preserve, this may not be the best first choice. GamesRadar describes the game’s companions, relationships, fantasy role-play, and meaningful choices, and lists PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5 among its platforms. See GamesRadar’s Dragon Age recommendations.
For tactical fantasy battles: Divinity: Original Sin 2
Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition suits players who actively want a party-based tactical RPG. It offers companions, quests, and decisions that can affect the ending, but its turn-based combat asks you to plan rather than fight in real time. Its world and tone also differ from Dragon Age, so choose it for the tactical party experience, not as a substitute for Thedas. GameSpot’s January 27, 2026 guide describes its turn-based party play and consequential decisions; PlayStation Portugal includes the Definitive Edition on its similar-games list. GameSpot’s guide to games like Baldur’s Gate 3 and PlayStation Portugal’s Veilguard page provide those descriptions.

For fantasy exploration over party management
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
Try The Witcher 3 if you want a large fantasy adventure with quests, exploration, storytelling, and romance. Its central character is Geralt, a defined protagonist rather than a customizable hero leading a full companion squad. The appeal is getting swept into his journey and the surrounding world, not recreating Veilguard’s party structure.
Skyrim Special Edition
Skyrim Special Edition is a better fit if open-ended fantasy exploration matters more to you than cinematic companion relationships. It offers a broad fantasy adventure and dragon encounters, but its focus is less tightly centered on companion-led storytelling. PlayStation’s regional page lists it among similar games, and GamesRadar also recommends it for fantasy adventure. PlayStation Portugal’s list and GamesRadar’s guide identify these as options.

For more Dragon Age and Thedas: Dragon Age: Inquisition
If you want to remain in the series’ setting and follow its lore further, play Dragon Age: Inquisition. BioWare characterizes it as an open-world, story-driven action RPG with complex characters, challenging combat, and decisions that shape the experience. It is the direct same-franchise choice, though it is an earlier entry with its own pacing and structure; returning players may already know it. BioWare’s official catalogue describes the game.

Persona 5 Royal for party bonds outside fantasy
Persona 5 Royal is worth considering if the friendships, character bonds, and romance mattered more than the fantasy setting. It takes place in modern Tokyo and uses turn-based combat, making it a looser match for Veilguard than the fantasy party RPGs.

Cyberpunk 2077 for open-world role-play
Cyberpunk 2077 offers role-play, relationships, and flexibility in how you approach quests, but it trades fantasy for a science-fiction city and does not center on a traditional companion party. It fits better if you want another character-led open-world RPG than if you want another BioWare-style squad.
GamesRadar’s February 5, 2025 guide includes both among its Dragon Age alternatives. Its recommendations are organized around different RPG appeals, rather than treating every pick as a direct gameplay equivalent.
Choose by the part of Veilguard you want to carry forward
- Companions and dialogue: Mass Effect Legendary Edition for BioWare’s companion-led storytelling, or Baldur’s Gate 3 for fantasy relationships—if you are comfortable with turn-based battles.
- Fantasy tactics: Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition if planning party turns sounds appealing.
- Exploration and quests: The Witcher 3 for a defined hero and story, or Skyrim Special Edition for a more open-ended fantasy adventure.
- Setting and lore: Dragon Age: Inquisition for another trip through Thedas.
- Check platform first: the recommendations span different platform listings, and those listings or regional editions can change.
For a fantasy companion RPG, Baldur’s Gate 3 is the strongest match if turn-based combat suits you. For BioWare-style relationships and a sustained story arc, Mass Effect Legendary Edition is the safer thematic follow-up. Pick The Witcher 3 or Skyrim when the world matters more than the squad.
