Core Keeper is the closest co-op substitute for Reforj’s mining, building, farming and survival loop. Choose Trove if you want a free-to-play voxel MMO with classes and persistent rewards, Terraria if bosses and long-form combat progression matter most, or Minecraft for the broadest creative-survival sandbox and ecosystem. None reproduces Reforj exactly: Core Keeper is top-down 2D, while Terraria is side-scrolling 2D and Trove emphasizes MMO action over survival simulation.
That distinction matters because Reforj is still being shaped by player feedback. 4J Studios is recruiting Pioneer playtesters, and Title Update 7 (22 April 2026) added mobs, farming, circuits, Magshell transportation, sculpting tools and support for eight players. The alternatives below are therefore best understood as answers to specific priorities rather than replacements with identical systems.
What Reforj currently offers
Reforj’s identity is first-person voxel construction combined with survival and engineering systems. Its current development stage is unusually important to any comparison: 4J Studios describes Pioneer playtesting as a way for players to help shape the game, with feedback directly affecting development. Features and balance can therefore change as development continues.

The update added mobs, farming, circuits, Magshell transportation and sculpting tools, then expanded online play to eight players. Reforj also documents Normal and Peaceful difficulties and separates Survival and Creative modes. In practical terms, that means a player can approach it as a pressured resource-and-combat game, a calmer building experience, or a group project for as many as eight participants.

Use that baseline to decide what you are actually trying to replace. If the priority is shared resource extraction and a compact base loop, Core Keeper is the strongest fit. If the word “voxel” matters more than survival pressure, Trove is the free-to-play choice. If progression means bosses, rare equipment and dungeons, Terraria is more suitable. If you want an established world-building platform with extensive server and mod possibilities, Minecraft is the broadest reference point.

Core Keeper: the closest co-op systems match
Core Keeper is the best recommendation when your ideal Reforj session is a group mining expedition that ends with a more capable base. Its Steam listing describes a mining sandbox adventure for one to eight players: explore an underground world, mine resources, build, fight, craft and farm. The listing also identifies procedural generation, online co-op, base building and survival as core characteristics. That combination overlaps with Reforj’s resource loop more closely than the other alternatives.
Why it feels similar
- Shared progression: Everyone contributes to the same underground base and resource economy, making a small group’s improvements visible after each expedition.
- Extraction as the central activity: Mining is not a side feature. It supplies the materials needed for construction, crafting and further exploration.
- Farming and upkeep: Farming gives the home base a productive role instead of making it only a storage or crafting station.
- Eight-player scale: The listed 1–8-player range matches Reforj’s current eight-player support, so large friend groups do not need to split into separate sessions.
The trade-off
Core Keeper is top-down 2D, not first-person voxel construction. You do not get Reforj’s direct placement perspective, sculpting-tool workflow or the same sense of building in three-dimensional space. Its underground presentation also changes how you read distance and architecture: the challenge is planning a connected cavern base rather than standing inside a tall, visible structure.
Who should choose it
Pick Core Keeper if two to eight friends want a cooperative campaign with mining, farming and a steadily expanding base. It is also a sensible choice when you want survival-crafting systems without waiting for an evolving playtest. Steam lists the release date as 27 August 2024; at access on 20 October 2026, its English reviews were 94% positive from 23,872 reviews. That rating is a snapshot of Steam user sentiment, not a guarantee that every player will prefer its 2D format.
The listing’s own description captures the intended scale: “Explore a vast cavern of creatures, relics and resources in a mining sandbox adventure for 1-8 players.” Read that as a description of the loop, not as evidence that it duplicates Reforj’s engineering or transport systems.

Trove: a free-to-play voxel MMO alternative
Trove is the right answer when “voxel” means block-built worlds and social discovery, while “survival” is less important than classes, loot and a persistent online game. Its official FAQ describes an open-ended voxel adventure through procedurally generated realms, combining gathering and building with RPG systems. It includes monsters, chests, quests, mounts and more than a dozen unique classes.
Where Trove exceeds Reforj’s current scope
- Class variety: More than a dozen classes let you choose a distinct combat identity rather than having every player use the same toolkit.
- Persistent rewards: Loot and mounts support an MMO-style collection loop that continues beyond a single base or world.
- Social breadth: The game is available on Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, PC and Steam, and the FAQ says it operates across more than 200 countries and regions.
- Low entry cost: Trove is free-to-play, so a group can try its core loop without purchasing a boxed or digital edition up front.
Why it is not a direct survival replacement
Trove’s focus is RPG/MMO progression rather than demanding survival simulation. Gathering and building are present, but the pressure comes primarily from enemies, quests, loot and class development. If your Reforj sessions revolve around managing resources, farming and choosing between Normal and Peaceful difficulty, Trove will feel more like an online action RPG than a survival engineering sandbox.
Who should choose it
Choose Trove for a large social game with procedural realms, class experimentation and long-term rewards. It is particularly suitable for players who want to join friends across several console and PC families. The official FAQ summarizes its tone as “an open-ended voxel adventure through countless realms filled with quests, chests, and enemies of all sizes and shapes (but mostly square-ish).” That description explains both its strength and its limitation: the voxel presentation is central, while survival simulation is secondary.
Terraria: the 2D, combat-heavy alternative
Terraria is the strongest pick when the part of Reforj you care about most is the journey from basic tools to increasingly dangerous encounters. PC Gamer describes it as a survival-crafting sandbox with randomly generated worlds, resource gathering, crafting, caverns, monsters, NPCs, building, solo play and co-op. GamesRadar emphasizes its combat, unique items, bosses and dungeons.
Its progression loop
Terraria gives construction a practical purpose: bases support exploration, crafting and NPCs, while underground trips provide materials and equipment for harder fights. Randomly generated worlds create a fresh map for each run, with caverns and dungeons supplying distinct goals. The progression arc is therefore encounter-driven. You build because you need a safer home, better preparation and access to the next tier of equipment.

The trade-off for a Reforj builder
Terraria is side-scrolling 2D. You cannot reproduce first-person voxel architecture, three-dimensional sightlines or Reforj’s sculpting-tool approach. Building is still substantial, but it serves a different spatial language: rooms, platforms, arenas and vertical shafts rather than walk-in 3D structures.
Who should choose it
Pick Terraria if you want bosses and dungeons to define the campaign, or if your group enjoys preparing for a difficult fight more than optimizing a transport or circuit network. It supports solo and co-op play, so it works for a single player as well as a small group. Players seeking a calm creative mode should look elsewhere; Terraria’s appeal is the way exploration, equipment and combat feed back into construction.
Minecraft: the broadest creative-survival reference
Minecraft remains the most flexible recommendation for players who want to decide what “like Reforj” means for themselves. PC Gamer describes support for creative and survival play, multiplayer, robust crafting and building, plus hunger and thirst systems. Its first-person voxel perspective makes it the closest visual and construction comparison in this list.
Why builders choose it
- Two distinct modes: Creative removes ordinary resource pressure for unrestricted construction, while Survival makes gathering, crafting and staying alive part of the routine.
- First-person placement: The viewpoint is familiar to anyone attracted to Reforj’s direct construction perspective.
- Open-ended play: You can treat the world as an architectural project, a survival campaign or a multiplayer server activity.
- Ecosystem depth: The mature base game, multiplayer options and modding/server variety provide more established ways to customize play than an evolving title.
Why it is only a broad match
Minecraft is not a one-to-one substitute for Reforj’s current systems. The cited material does not establish equivalent circuits, Magshell transportation or sculpting tools, and it does not define a player cap for every multiplayer setup. Its recommendation is therefore about freedom and maturity, not feature parity. If your deciding factor is Reforj’s specific engineering direction, wait for those systems to stabilize rather than assuming Minecraft reproduces them.
Who should choose it
Choose Minecraft when the ability to switch between creative building, survival pressure and varied multiplayer formats matters more than a fixed progression path. It is the safest general recommendation for a mixed group in which one player wants architecture, another wants survival and a third wants to run a shared server or experiment with modifications.

Compare the games by the decision that matters to you
1. Construction perspective and precision
Reforj and Minecraft use first-person voxel construction, which makes height, interiors and sightlines part of the building process. Core Keeper’s top-down view makes base layout and route planning clearer but removes three-dimensional placement. Terraria’s side view favors rooms, arenas and vertical traversal. Trove presents voxel spaces through an action-RPG perspective, so building supports the adventure rather than defining a construction simulator.
2. Survival intensity and resource pressure
Reforj explicitly separates Survival and Creative and offers Normal and Peaceful difficulties. Core Keeper keeps mining, farming and survival systems close to the center of play. Minecraft offers the clearest choice between unrestricted Creative construction and a Survival mode with hunger and thirst. Terraria uses survival-crafting foundations but directs pressure toward exploration and combat. Trove includes gathering but is the least survival-focused option.
3. Progression and combat
Terraria is the combat specialist: bosses, dungeons and unique items provide a clear long-term ladder. Trove uses classes, monsters, loot and mounts for an MMO-style progression. Core Keeper combines cooperative exploration and combat with base development. Minecraft is intentionally less prescriptive, while Reforj’s current direction includes mobs alongside farming and engineering features; its final progression structure may change during development.
4. Solo and co-op scale
Reforj currently supports eight players online. Core Keeper also lists one to eight players, making it the cleanest capacity match. Terraria supports solo and co-op without a player number established in the cited material. Trove is designed as an MMO, but the FAQ does not state an exact party cap. Minecraft supports multiplayer, though the appropriate limit depends on the setup and is not specified here.
5. World structure
Core Keeper builds its identity around a procedurally generated underground world. Trove sends players through procedurally generated realms. Terraria creates randomly generated worlds containing caverns and dungeons. Minecraft offers open-ended worlds. Reforj’s world structure is still being shaped, so compare these formats by the kind of exploration you want rather than by assuming one is mechanically identical.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
6. Platform and payment model
Trove has the widest explicitly listed platform spread: Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, PC and Steam, and it is free-to-play. Core Keeper’s cited listing confirms Steam release on 27 August 2024 but does not establish a payment model in the available material. Platform and payment details for Terraria and Minecraft are not established by the cited sources here. Check the current store listing for your device before planning a purchase or shared session.
Choose by player priority
- You want Reforj-like co-op systems: Start with Core Keeper. Its one-to-eight-player mining, building, farming and crafting loop is the closest structural match, provided you accept top-down 2D presentation.
- You want first-person voxel building: Choose Minecraft. It shares the perspective and supports both Creative and Survival, but it is a broad sandbox rather than a match for Reforj’s developing circuits and transport systems.
- You want the strongest combat campaign: Choose Terraria. Bosses, dungeons and unique items give the clearest reason to keep exploring after the first base is complete.
- You want free social voxel play: Choose Trove. Its free-to-play model, cross-platform availability listed by the FAQ, classes and persistent MMO rewards outweigh its lighter survival simulation.
- You want to follow Reforj’s specific direction: Play Reforj itself through the available Pioneer testing path if accepted, and treat the alternatives as established games serving different priorities. Title Update 7 shows that mobs, farming, circuits, Magshell transportation, sculpting and eight-player play are active areas of development, not a promise that the final balance is settled.
Practical multiplayer planning
For a group of up to eight, Core Keeper is the simplest direct alternative because its listed player range matches Reforj’s current capacity. Assigning roles can make the difference between a productive session and a crowded base: some players mine, others expand the home area, and another group handles farming or combat. The game’s systems are cooperative by design, so improvements remain useful to everyone.
In Terraria, decide before starting whether the group wants a shared progression campaign or a combat-focused run. Build a safe home and preparation areas first, then explore caves and dungeons together. The side-scrolling format rewards clear routes and purpose-built arenas more than elaborate three-dimensional architecture.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →For Trove, agree on whether the group values class variety or simply wants to explore together. Because the game’s rewards and classes define much of its identity, choosing complementary classes can matter more than dividing mining tasks. It is a better fit for a social MMO evening than for a session built around hunger, shelter and resource scarcity.
For Minecraft, establish the server’s intended style at the beginning: Creative construction, Survival progression or a mixed community world. That decision prevents conflicts over resource access and determines whether hunger and thirst are meaningful constraints for the group.
Bottom line: which game should you play?
Play Core Keeper for the closest overall co-op loop: mining, building, farming, crafting and survival for up to eight players. Play Trove for free-to-play voxel MMO action, classes and loot across the platforms listed by its official FAQ. Play Terraria for the deepest boss-and-dungeon progression in a 2D world. Play Minecraft for the broadest first-person creative-survival sandbox. Reforj remains the choice when first-person voxel construction, its emerging circuits and transport systems, and participation in an evolving eight-player survival/creative project are the specific reasons you are playing.
