If Nonolith’s appeal is moving, rotating, creating and destroying the world itself, start with Manifold Garden for gravity-based rule changes and impossible architecture, Superliminal for perspective tricks, and The Witness for a large island that teaches its systems through exploration. Add Antichamber when you want a disorienting non-Euclidean maze, or Baba Is You when rewriting explicit rules sounds more interesting than manipulating 3D space.
These games are not identical substitutes. Nonolith is unusual because it combines a manipulable 3D sandbox with exploration that unlocks additional ways to affect the environment. The recommendations below separate the underlying ideas—physical editing, gravity, viewpoint, navigation, observation and rule construction—so you can choose the one that matches the part you enjoyed most.
What makes Nonolith distinctive?
Nonolith’s official description calls it “A puzzle sandbox for everyone.” Its central promise is unusually direct: every block can be moved, rotated, created and destroyed. Manifold Garden: the closest match for changing physical rules
Choose Manifold Garden first if the part of Nonolith you value most is making the environment obey a different physical logic. Its Steam description presents an Escher-esque world of impossible architecture where you “rediscover gravity.” You can manipulate gravity to walk on any visible surface, turning walls and ceilings into potential floors.
How its world differs from Nonolith
Nonolith gives you direct control over individual blocks. Manifold Garden instead changes the force that governs your movement. The geometry repeats infinitely in every direction, and falling can return you to the place where you started. That looping structure creates a maze without requiring conventional doors or keys: orientation itself becomes the problem.

Superliminal: the best perspective-manipulation alternative
Choose Superliminal if your favorite Nonolith moments involve looking at a problem differently and discovering that the scene itself has changed. Steam describes it as a first-person puzzle game based on forced perspective and optical illusions. Its central trick is that an object’s apparent size and function can change when you pick it up or place it from a different viewpoint.
How perspective becomes a tool
In an ordinary 3D puzzle game, a small object remains small. In Superliminal, the apparent relationship between object and camera can determine the result. Aligning an object with a distant reference may let you create a larger version; viewing the same object from another angle can reveal a route or a hidden interpretation. The Witness: the best exploration-led discovery game
Choose The Witness if you want a large world that teaches you by letting you observe it. You wake alone on a strange island full of puzzles. Its Steam tags identify first-person play, open-world exploration, nonlinear progression, mystery and difficult puzzles.
Why it matches Nonolith’s discovery loop
The Witness does not give you a conventional tutorial that explains every rule in advance. Instead, each region presents visual examples, then asks you to infer the principle connecting them. Progress comes from learning how to see the island’s language: line placement, symmetry, environmental relationships and other rules become meaningful because the world demonstrates them.

That makes exploration part of the puzzle rather than a break between puzzles. You may leave a difficult panel, walk to another area, notice a pattern in the landscape and return with a new hypothesis. The island’s nonlinear structure supports this kind of self-directed progression.

The Witness generally does not ask you to manipulate the island’s physical geometry. You are changing your understanding, not the terrain. Its hardest moments demand careful observation, patience and a willingness to test whether a rule applies in a new context. Some solutions are spatial in a broad sense, but the decisive insight often comes from noticing a relationship you previously ignored.
Who should choose it

Like Nonolith, Antichamber rewards experimentation instead of assuming that every obstacle has a conventional solution. You learn by testing boundaries: walk toward an apparent impossibility, backtrack, change your angle and watch for environmental feedback. The satisfaction comes from discovering the world’s hidden operating rules.
The difference is that Antichamber offers less of a construction sandbox. You are usually adapting to a strange architecture rather than building a bridge or deleting a block. If you want to author the route, Nonolith is the better fit; if you want the route to challenge your assumptions, Antichamber is the sharper choice.

Baba Is You: the best rule-rewriting alternative
Choose Baba Is You if “changing the rules” sounds more exciting than changing 3D geometry.
