Short answer: Choose Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord for sandbox warfare and army-scale battles, Chivalry 2 for immediate large-battle melee, or Mordhau for demanding player-versus-player weapon technique. Choose The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt if authored quests matter more than historical accuracy, Medieval Dynasty for slower medieval-life and settlement systems, and Pentiment for investigation and dialogue rather than combat. None reproduces every part of Kingdom Come: Deliverance II at once.
The reference game combines a 15th-century Bohemian civil-war setting, an authored protagonist, an open-world action-RPG structure, and deliberate first-person real-time fighting. The best replacement therefore depends on which of those pillars you want to keep.
What makes Kingdom Come: Deliverance II difficult to replace
Kingdom Come: Deliverance II is set in 15th-century Bohemia during a civil war, with Henry of Skalitz as its protagonist. Official platform descriptions present it as an action RPG built around an authentic first-person combat system, real-time battles and a historically grounded medieval world. Steam’s metadata adds the descriptors most relevant to this comparison: open world, single-player, realistic, historical and swordplay combat.

Those labels describe several different kinds of realism. The setting and material culture aim for historical grounding; the combat asks you to manage distance, timing and weapon choice in real time; and the role-playing structure makes you live with the consequences of an authored character’s decisions. It is immersive rather than a literal military simulator. A game can therefore be realistic in one dimension while moving in a very different direction in another.
For example, Bannerlord is closer on the warfare and sandbox axes but less like Henry’s personal story. Chivalry 2 and Mordhau give you more immediate fighting but much less historical-life simulation. The Witcher 3 supplies a deeper quest narrative while adding overt fantasy. Medieval Dynasty and Pentiment preserve parts of the medieval atmosphere without trying to duplicate its swordplay.

1. Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord — best for sandbox warfare
Why it is the closest strategic substitute
Bannerlord is the strongest recommendation if your favorite part of Kingdom Come is the feeling of participating in a living medieval conflict. Instead of following one fixed hero through a carefully authored campaign, you build a character, gather companions and troops, choose alliances and pursue your own rise through a shifting power structure. Battles can grow from personal engagements into formations and armies, giving the medieval world a scale the reference game deliberately keeps more intimate.
Its appeal is systemic. Political relationships, recruitment, travel and battles interact to create stories that are not scripted in the same way as Henry’s quests. You can lose a fight, change sides, recover and return with a stronger force. That freedom makes it the best answer to the search term games like Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 when the real request is a medieval sandbox rather than a second authored RPG.
What changes from Kingdom Come
- The protagonist and campaign are tools for a player-created story, not the center of a tightly directed narrative.
- Army command and strategic consequences matter as much as the individual duel.
- The world is designed around emergent politics and warfare, so historical immersion comes from systems and context rather than a single carefully staged region.
Choose Bannerlord if commanding troops, recruiting forces and deciding which faction rises matters more to you than recreating Henry’s personal routine. Avoid it if your priority is a historically detailed, first-person life simulation with every quest authored around one character.
2. Chivalry 2 — best for accessible large-scale melee
Why it works for immediate sword fighting
Chivalry 2 removes most of the preparation between you and a medieval clash. Its focus is the physical immediacy of weapons, shields, sieges and crowded battlefields. The recommendation is straightforward: if you want to enter a fight, swing a weapon and feel the impact of a chaotic medieval assault without first managing an RPG build, this is the most accessible lane on the list.
The game’s combat-first design makes it useful for readers searching for best sword-fighting games rather than a full historical role-playing campaign. Large battles provide spectacle and momentum, while the controls are intended to let newcomers participate before they have mastered every interaction.

The trade-off
That accessibility comes from narrowing the simulation. You are not replacing the reference game’s open-world routines, authored quests, equipment economy or historically grounded progression. The medieval setting supplies the visual and physical language of the fight, but the core loop is the battle itself. Treat it as a combat companion to Kingdom Come, not as another version of its life in Bohemia.
- Pick it when: you want fast access to large clashes and a forgiving entry point.
- Do not pick it as your first choice when: your definition of realism includes historical investigation, personal progression and a single-player character arc.
3. Mordhau — best for technical melee mastery
What makes its fighting different
Mordhau belongs on a realistic medieval combat list because it expects players to learn weapon handling rather than rely on a simple attack button. Timing, spacing, defensive reactions and the properties of different weapons determine whether an exchange succeeds. The result is more demanding than Chivalry 2 and particularly attractive to players who enjoy practicing a technique until it becomes reliable.
This is a skill-based, player-versus-player recommendation. Improvement comes from reading another player, choosing the right moment to commit and understanding why an attack failed. That learning curve can produce a strong sense of ownership over every successful duel.

What it does not replace
Mordhau is not the same type of single-player historical RPG as Kingdom Come: Deliverance II. Its central question is whether you can outplay the opponent in front of you, not how Henry’s choices affect a quest, settlement or political relationship. There is no equivalent promise of a long authored journey through a historically grounded society.

- Look elsewhere when: you want exploration, role-playing consequences or a quiet medieval routine between fights.
4. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — best for narrative depth
Why it satisfies the role-playing side
The Witcher 3 is the best alternative when the part you want to preserve is a large, authored RPG full of characters, quests and consequential choices. Its world has the texture of a medieval setting, and its story gives you a strong protagonist whose relationships and decisions shape the journey. It offers more narrative breadth than a combat-first game and more directed storytelling than a sandbox.
For many players, this is the practical answer to the question of what to play after Kingdom Come: both games reward taking time with side quests, conversations and the people who inhabit the world. The attraction is not identical combat realism but the feeling that the setting is worth exploring because its stories are written with care.
The decisive compromise: fantasy
The Witcher 3 is not a medieval RPG without magic. Monsters, supernatural powers and fantasy lore are central to its identity. Its combat supports the narrative adventure rather than attempting to model ordinary human swordsmanship in a historically grounded society.

5. Medieval Dynasty — best for medieval-life and settlement systems
A slower route into the period
Medieval Dynasty addresses a different reason people seek games like Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2: they want to inhabit a medieval community. Its emphasis is on daily routines, survival and the gradual development of a settlement. Work, resources and long-term planning matter more than winning a technically demanding duel.
The slower pace can be a virtue. Instead of moving from one dramatic battle to the next, you see how a household or village takes shape. That focus gives the medieval setting a practical dimension: where supplies come from, how a community grows and what must be done before the next season.
Why it is adjacent rather than interchangeable
The game is not a substitute for first-person swordplay. If your purchase decision turns on directional attacks, armor choices and real-time battles, its settlement systems will not provide the same experience. It is better understood as a medieval-life simulation that complements a combat-heavy RPG.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Pick it when: building, survival and routine are the fantasy you want to fulfill.
- Skip it as a combat replacement when: you expect frequent, demanding melee encounters.
6. Pentiment — best for historical investigation
Historical atmosphere without real-time combat
Pentiment is the honorable mention for readers who value the historical perspective behind Kingdom Come more than its swordplay. Its investigation and dialogue-led storytelling ask you to pay attention to people, institutions and the way evidence is interpreted. The period atmosphere is expressed through its art, writing and social detail rather than through open-world fighting.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
That makes it useful for a different search intent: a game that helps you think about medieval life and power. You follow questions, weigh testimony and live with narrative consequences. The tension comes from deciding what to believe and how to act, not from winning a duel.
Know the boundary
Pentiment should never be presented as a combat alternative. It is a historical investigation game. Choose it when dialogue, atmosphere and the examination of a society are the parts of the medieval experience you want to keep.
How the alternatives compare on realism
Realism of setting
Kingdom Come: Deliverance II is the most direct fit for a historically grounded medieval setting among these recommendations. Bannerlord, Chivalry 2 and Mordhau use medieval contexts to support warfare and combat, but their priorities are systemic or competitive rather than a detailed, authored reconstruction of one place and period. The Witcher 3 is intentionally fantasy. Medieval Dynasty focuses on medieval-life atmosphere, while Pentiment communicates history through investigation and dialogue.
Realism of combat
For deliberate, first-person, historically grounded fighting, the reference game remains the most complete match for its own design. Mordhau is the strongest alternative if technical weapon handling is your definition of realism. Chivalry 2 favors accessibility and spectacle. Bannerlord adds the realism of battlefield scale and command decisions. The remaining two games are not trying to simulate sword combat as their central activity.
Realism of progression
Kingdom Come ties combat, equipment, skills and quests to one authored protagonist. Bannerlord turns progression into a player-directed campaign. The Witcher 3 offers authored character and quest progression in a fantasy setting. Medieval Dynasty treats progress as the growth of a household and settlement. Chivalry 2 and Mordhau make player execution the main measure of improvement, while Pentiment makes interpretation and choice the progression loop.
Which game should you choose?
- You want armies, politics and a player-made medieval story: choose Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord.
- You want to join a spectacular melee immediately: choose Chivalry 2.
- You want the deepest weapon technique and competitive practice: choose Mordhau.
- You want a major quest-driven RPG and can accept magic: choose The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
- You want to build a medieval household or settlement: choose Medieval Dynasty.
- You want historical investigation and dialogue instead of combat: choose Pentiment.
- You want all of those elements together: stay with Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, because no alternative combines its historically grounded Bohemian setting, first-person real-time combat, open-world RPG structure and authored storytelling in the same package.
Buying and platform checks
An official PlayStation listing confirms a PS5 edition of Kingdom Come: Deliverance II. Edition names, prices, stock, subscription availability and regional storefronts are volatile, so verify those details immediately before purchase. The same caution applies to every alternative: a game’s current platform support or bundle status can change after an article is published.
Use the comparison for design fit first, then open the current store page for your region and confirm the edition, required account or online features, and whether the mode you want is included. That two-step check prevents a combat recommendation from becoming a poor purchase simply because its current release or mode availability differs from what you expected.
