Start with Outer Wilds. It is the strongest match for the combination of a repeating time loop, exploration that changes as time advances, and progression determined by what you understand rather than by a conventional upgrade ladder. Its structure is very different from Echo Weaver: this is a first-person mystery in an open solar system, not a 2D Metroidvania. If your priority is investigating people, solving a community-wide mystery, and making moral decisions inside a loop, choose The Forgotten City instead.
Echo Weaver is the useful comparison anchor because its official description treats secrets as upgrades and time as a resource. The games below overlap with those ideas in different ways, so the right choice depends on whether you value environmental discovery, social deduction, or movement-focused routing.

What makes Echo Weaver distinctive
The official Steam listing for Echo Weaver describes it as a knowledge-based Metroidvania. That wording matters: learning a secret is part of progression, rather than merely a story reward you collect after finding a traditional item. The publisher’s game page likewise presents the experience around routing and rhythm instead of treating raw reflexes as the whole challenge.
Secrets function as progression
In a conventional action-exploration game, a new ability normally gives you an obvious physical capability: reach a higher ledge, break a barrier, or survive a hazard. Echo Weaver frames secrets themselves as upgrades. The practical consequence is that an apparently impassable route may become solvable when you understand a rule, recognize a pattern, or remember an interaction. Progress therefore has a mental layer as well as a movement layer.

Time is something you spend
The loop in Echo Weaver is described as a resource that can be extended and spent. Healing, trading, and opening routes all draw on that resource. This creates a routing problem: an action that helps immediately may leave less time for a later shortcut, purchase, or recovery. The tension is not simply surviving until a timer ends; it is deciding which uses of time produce the best route through the current attempt.
Why that changes the comparison
Neither recommendation reproduces every part of that formula. Outer Wilds shares the idea that knowledge opens progress, but replaces 2D traversal with free movement through a solar system. The Forgotten City shares the loop and the need to learn, but makes investigation, conversations, and deduction the central activities. Think of them as matches for particular design principles, not interchangeable versions of Echo Weaver.
Best games like Echo Weaver at a glance
| Game | How the loop works | What advances you | Best fit | Main difference from Echo Weaver |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Echo Weaver | Time is a spendable resource in a looping world. | Secrets and learned uses of available powers. | 2D action-exploration where routing and rhythm matter. | Anchor game for this comparison. |
| Outer Wilds | An endless solar-system cycle resets after 22 minutes, according to PlayStation Blog’s 2019 article. | Understanding the world; PlayStation says progression is limited by player knowledge. | Environmental discovery, navigation, and self-directed investigation. | First-person, open-world space mystery rather than a 2D Metroidvania. |
| The Forgotten City | The player exploits a deadly repeating loop. | Exploration, questioning residents, deduction, and choices. | Character-led mystery and moral decision-making. | Social investigation replaces platforming and movement-based routing. |
1. Outer Wilds: the closest match for knowledge-gated exploration
Outer Wilds is presented by PlayStation as an open-world mystery in a solar system trapped in an endless time loop. That premise gives it the clearest overlap with Echo Weaver’s knowledge-first progression. You are not primarily accumulating a conventional sequence of power-ups. Instead, you investigate locations, observe events, connect clues, and use what you have learned to reach places or understand situations that were opaque before.

The 22-minute cycle is a system, not a countdown gimmick
PlayStation Blog’s October 8, 2019 article identifies the cycle as 22 minutes and explains that locations can change as time progresses. A location is therefore not a static puzzle room that waits indefinitely for you. Its state, access, or surrounding circumstances may depend on when you arrive. A failed attempt still teaches you something about timing, geography, or cause and effect, which can make the next loop more efficient.

- UK PSN account may be required for any online features
The 22-minute figure belongs to Outer Wilds; it should not be treated as a specification for Echo Weaver. In Echo Weaver, time is described as a resource you spend on actions such as healing, trading, and opening routes. In Outer Wilds, the loop is the world’s repeating structure and the framework in which you conduct experiments.
Knowledge is the gate
PlayStation Blog states that progression through the world is limited by the player’s knowledge. That is the key reason this game belongs on a list of games like Echo Weaver. When you are stuck, the answer is often not to grind for a stronger item but to discover information that changes what you can do or where you can go. The game rewards building a mental map of relationships between places and events.
“Progression through the world of Outer Wilds is only limited by the player’s knowledge, so we recommend waiting to watch others play through the game until after you’ve played it yourself.”

What you do from loop to loop
- Choose a question. Pick a concrete mystery, location, or event rather than trying to see everything in one cycle.
- Observe the timing. Note what changes as the 22-minute cycle advances and which opportunities appear only at a particular stage.
- Record the connection. Treat each discovery as an explanation for another obstacle, not merely as a collectible.
- Re-enter with a plan. Use the next loop to test the information you gained, taking a shorter or better-timed route.
These are spoiler-light habits, not a walkthrough. The official warning about watching other players is especially relevant because seeing a solution can remove the central act of understanding it yourself.

Where it differs from Echo Weaver
Outer Wilds does not provide the same 2D platforming language, room-to-room routing, or rhythm-focused pressure described for Echo Weaver. Its scale is an open solar system, and its primary challenge is interpreting an interconnected environment. Someone looking specifically for tight jumps, a side-on map, or a time budget spent on healing and trading may find the resemblance conceptual rather than tactile.
Choose it when the phrase knowledge-gated exploration means, to you, discovering how a world works and then using that understanding to make previously impossible progress. Do not choose it expecting a direct mechanical substitute for a Metroidvania.
2. The Forgotten City: a character-led time-loop mystery
The Forgotten City’s official site emphasizes questioning an interconnected community and exploiting a deadly time loop. The result is a different kind of knowledge game: information comes from conversations, investigation, and deduction rather than from learning the movement rules of a platforming map.

The loop is a way to investigate people
Residents, their relationships, and the consequences of their actions form the mystery’s working parts. A conversation in one cycle can reveal the lead needed to approach another person differently in the next. Repeating the loop is useful because you can carry understanding forward even when the world itself resets.

Deduction replaces movement mastery
In Echo Weaver, a newly understood secret can function like an upgrade for navigating routes. In The Forgotten City, the equivalent breakthrough is often a better question, a discovered motive, or an explanation for an apparently impossible event. The official description’s focus on an interconnected community makes social reasoning the main progression tool.
Moral choices are part of the puzzle
The game is suited to players who want decisions to matter alongside mystery solving. The relevant question is not only how to escape or exploit the loop, but what your actions mean for the people caught inside it. That emphasis gives the game a character-led identity that Echo Weaver and Outer Wilds do not share in the same form.
Its documented origin
The official site says the original mod racked up over 3 million downloads. The page does not specify a year for that figure, so it should be read as the mod’s stated historical download count, not as a current sales or player total.

The official descriptions do not say that The Forgotten City uses 2D platforming, Metroidvania ability gates, or a loop that you spend on healing and trading. Its overlap is narrower but still meaningful: you repeat a world, gather knowledge, and exploit what you learn to change your options. Select it when investigation and moral choice matter more to you than movement precision.

How the three games use time and knowledge differently
| Design question | Echo Weaver | Outer Wilds | The Forgotten City |
|---|---|---|---|
| What resets or is limited? | Time is a resource that can be extended and spent on actions. | The solar system repeats in an endless 22-minute cycle. | The player exploits a deadly repeating loop. |
| What counts as an upgrade? | Secrets and learned uses of available powers. | Knowledge of locations, timing, and the world’s rules. | Clues, answers, relationships, and deductions. |
| How do you reach a new option? | Route through the world more intelligently and spend time on the right actions. | Return with information that changes your interpretation or timing. | Ask the right person, follow a new lead, or make a different choice. |
| What is the dominant play emphasis? | 2D action-exploration, routing, and rhythm. | Open-world environmental exploration. | Community investigation and moral decision-making. |
| What should you not expect? | Not a conventional upgrade ladder built only from collected items. | Not a 2D Metroidvania or a direct platforming equivalent. | Not a movement-focused platformer. |
Which game should you choose?
Choose Outer Wilds if your priority is discovery
Pick Outer Wilds if you want a world that reveals its logic through observation. It is the best fit for players who enjoy asking why a location behaves a certain way, tracing clues across an entire setting, and turning understanding into access. The 22-minute structure gives every discovery urgency without making reflex speed the sole measure of success.
Choose The Forgotten City if your priority is investigation
Choose The Forgotten City if the most appealing version of a time loop involves people. Its official framing points toward questioning an interconnected community, exploiting the loop, and solving a mystery through deduction. It is the stronger option when dialogue, motives, and moral consequences are more interesting than map traversal.
Stay with Echo Weaver if you want the specific 2D formula
If what you want is a side-on action-exploration game in which secrets act as upgrades and time must be budgeted for healing, trading, and opening routes, the anchor game remains the only choice in this group that directly supplies that combination. Neither recommendation should be presented as a replacement for its movement model.

- Identify your preferred verb. If it is navigating, start with Echo Weaver; if it is observing, start with Outer Wilds; if it is questioning, start with The Forgotten City.
- Decide whether you want a personal resource or a repeating world. Echo Weaver makes time something you manage during a route. Outer Wilds makes the loop the structure of the solar system. The Forgotten City makes repetition a way to investigate a community.
- Consider how you like to be stuck. Choose Echo Weaver if you enjoy refining a route, Outer Wilds if you enjoy forming hypotheses, and The Forgotten City if you enjoy testing explanations through conversations and choices.
- Protect the discovery. For Outer Wilds in particular, avoid videos or guides that reveal solutions before you have explored. The official PlayStation guidance specifically recommends experiencing the game before watching others play.
Platform and release context for Echo Weaver
Storefront pages do not present one universal release statement. Nintendo of America’s US listing gives the Switch 2 edition a release date of October 8, 2026. Akupara’s publisher page still labels the release date as not yet determined and describes publishing for PC and Xbox. Those are different listings and regions, so check the storefront for your platform rather than treating one date as a worldwide launch announcement.
The Steam listing names Moonlight Kids as developer and Akupara Games as publisher. That establishes the PC listing’s identity, but it does not by itself establish a current price, physical edition, or availability in every country.
What this comparison can and cannot measure
These games do not share a reliable published similarity score, completion-time benchmark, review statistic, or head-to-head sales comparison in the official material. The useful comparison is mechanical: each game asks you to turn understanding into new options, but they place that understanding in different activities. Treat the categories above as a decision framework, not as a claim that the games have identical content or structure.
For the closest overall match to the phrase “time-loop puzzles and knowledge-gated exploration,” choose Outer Wilds. For a social mystery built around deduction, choose The Forgotten City. For the specific 2D, route-planning experience described by its creators, choose Echo Weaver itself.
