Samsung Notes is the best overall note-taking app for most Galaxy Z Fold3 owners. It is the most natural fit for the Fold3’s S Pen, inner 7.6-inch display, PDF markup, folders, templates, handwriting-to-text conversion, and audio-linked notes. Choose OneNote if Windows, Microsoft 365, or shared notebooks matter most; choose MyScript Notes (formerly Nebo) if converting handwriting into editable text is your priority.
The Fold3 is unusually capable for note taking because its cover screen is convenient for quick capture, while the unfolded display provides a much larger writing and reading area. Your best app depends on whether you value handwriting, conversion, PDFs, organization, or access beyond Samsung devices.
What makes the Galaxy Z Fold3 good for note taking?
The Fold3 has a 7.6-inch inner display, optional S Pen support, split-screen multitasking, and Flex Mode. The inner screen is suited to handwriting, textbooks, documents, and long notes; the cover screen is better for a short typed note, checklist, or reminder. Do not assume every Android app is foldable-optimized. Some simply resize as a phone app, some provide a tablet-style two-pane layout, and a few use the extra width particularly well. Google’s large-screen guidance documents this app-by-app variation: Android apps on tablets and foldables.

Use the correct S Pen
The Fold3 supports the S Pen Fold Edition and S Pen Pro. Both are optional accessories; the pen is not stored inside the phone. Samsung specifically lists S Pen Pro compatibility with the Z Fold3. Avoid pressing an older or generic S Pen onto the foldable inner display unless Samsung documents it as compatible. Check current stock and compatibility through Samsung’s accessory page.

Samsung Notes: the best overall choice
Samsung Notes is the default recommendation when the Fold3 is your main note-taking device. Samsung documents handwriting, typed and handwritten content in one note, selection and movement of ink, handwriting-to-text conversion, synchronized voice recordings, PDF import and annotation, folders and subfolders, page templates, and export to PDF, Word, and PowerPoint. A practical Samsung Notes workflow
- Open Samsung Notes and tap the new-note button.
- Select the pen or handwriting tool and write with a compatible Fold Edition S Pen or S Pen Pro.
- Use selection tools to move or resize strokes.
- Convert handwriting when you need editable text; recognition quality varies with language and handwriting style.
- Add a title, folder, subfolder, or ruled/grid template.
- Import a PDF for markup, then export the annotated document in the format you need.
Samsung Notes is especially useful for lectures: keep a recording linked to your written notes, then revisit the relevant point later. It is also the least-friction choice for full-screen writing, Flex Mode viewing, and Galaxy sharing.
Important: OneNote integration is not a full backup
In Samsung Notes, open Settings → Sync with Microsoft OneNote, sign in, and choose folders. In Outlook on the web or Outlook.com, open the OneNote feed icon. Microsoft says selected Samsung notes appear in that feed, but individual notes cannot be created, edited, or deleted there. To continue working on one, copy it into a normal OneNote page. That makes the feed useful for visibility, not a conventional two-way notebook or guaranteed independent backup. Export important notes separately before changing phones or resetting the Fold3.
OneNote: best for Windows and Microsoft 365
OneNote is the stronger primary notebook when notes must be available on Android, Windows, Mac, and the web, or when classmates and colleagues share notebooks. Notebooks synchronize through OneDrive and support work and school accounts.
Handwriting controls on Android
- Open a OneNote page and tap the Pen icon.
- Choose a pen or highlighter and write on the canvas.
- Use Eraser to remove strokes.
- Use Lasso to select, move, or resize ink.
- Choose ruled or grid lines from the three-dot menu.
- Move around the canvas with two fingers.
- For a manual refresh, use Notebooks → More options → Settings → Sync all.
Microsoft documents these controls at Take handwritten notes in OneNote for Android. OneNote feels more like a structured notebook system than a Samsung-native scratchpad, but that structure is valuable for school, work, and collaboration. Microsoft 365 Personal was listed at $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year, and Family at $12.99 per month or $129.99 per year on the U.S. page checked August 18, 2026; those are bundle prices, not a requirement to use the free OneNote app. See Microsoft’s OneNote page.
MyScript Notes (formerly Nebo): best for handwriting-to-text
MyScript Notes is the specialist choice when handwriting is only the first stage and you ultimately need clean, editable, searchable text. MyScript advertises recognition in 66 languages at its product page. It suits structured paragraphs, diagrams, and conversion-heavy workflows better than Samsung-specific features such as synchronized audio.

Recognition is not magic: cursive, mathematical notation, mixed languages, and messy writing can reduce accuracy. The official page reviewed did not expose a current Android price, so check the Google Play listing in your country before buying.
Noteshelf: a notebook-style alternative
Noteshelf is designed to feel like a conventional digital notebook, with paper templates, pen tools, notebooks, and PDF annotation. Its official site lists Android, iOS/macOS, and Windows versions: Noteshelf and Noteshelf for Android.
Choose it if you prefer a paper-like notebook interface or want an alternative to Samsung’s ecosystem. Do not assume it delivers a superior S Pen experience, guaranteed cross-platform synchronization, or a particular pricing model: verify the current Google Play listing and sync terms for your region.
Useful for specific workflows: Keep, Evernote, and Notion
Google Keep for quick capture
Keep is excellent for short typed notes, checklists, labels, reminders, and images. It is not a replacement for a handwritten notebook, textbook markup, or a large folder hierarchy. Older Fold3 coverage treated handwritten Keep content as drawing notes; confirm behavior in the current Android build before relying on conversion.

Evernote for archives and document capture
Evernote makes sense when searchable storage, web clipping, tasks, and business documents matter more than low-friction handwriting. Google identifies stylus Sketch support, adaptive widgets, and a two-pane landscape layout on foldables and tablets in its large-screen coverage. Evernote lists Free, Starter, and Advanced plans; its paid-plan trials are generally seven days. Check current prices at Evernote’s plan page.
Notion for typed knowledge management
Notion is a workspace for linked pages, databases, project planning, publishing, and collaboration—not an S Pen-first notebook. Use it to organize cleaned-up information around handwritten source notes. Its Free plan provides unlimited pages and blocks for individuals, while free file uploads are limited to 5 MB each; regional paid pricing varies. See Notion’s pricing page.
Choose by use case
- Most handwritten notes: Samsung Notes.
- Windows, school, or shared work: OneNote.
- Handwriting converted to editable text: MyScript Notes.
- PDF study and annotation: Samsung Notes first; compare OneNote or Noteshelf for your document workflow.
- Quick lists and reminders: Google Keep.
- Searchable document archive: Evernote.
- Typed research, databases, and projects: Notion.
One-app or two-app setup?
When one app is enough
Use Samsung Notes alone for a Galaxy-first workflow, OneNote alone for a Microsoft-centered archive, or MyScript Notes alone when conversion is the defining requirement. Notion alone is sensible only when most of your work is typed and structured.
Useful combinations
- Samsung Notes + OneNote: write on the Fold3, then copy selected material into editable OneNote pages. Remember that the Samsung feed is not two-way editing.
- Samsung Notes + Google Keep: keep long handwritten notes in Samsung Notes and temporary lists or reminders in Keep.
- Samsung Notes + Notion: capture meetings or study by hand, then build a typed project knowledge base in Notion.
- Samsung Notes + Evernote: use Samsung Notes for pen and PDF work and Evernote for archival documents and clipping.
- MyScript Notes + OneNote: convert handwriting first, then store or share the resulting text in Microsoft’s ecosystem.
Do not maintain two complete primary archives. Duplicated notebooks create conflicts, unclear search results, and extra maintenance.

Foldable layout and split-screen checks
Evaluate an app in four states: folded cover-screen portrait, fully opened portrait, fully opened landscape, and partially folded Flex Mode. Check whether it uses the full inner display, offers a two-pane list and editor, keeps the toolbar reachable, preserves zoom and cursor position after rotation, and leaves enough width for writing beside a browser, PDF, video, or meeting app.
Two apps side by side are practical for short annotations and reference material, but they reduce writing width. Use full-screen Samsung Notes or OneNote for extended handwriting; reserve split screen for copying key points or marking a small section. Flex Mode is particularly useful for viewing a lecture or video while writing, although third-party apps may not offer Samsung Notes’ exact controls.
Fix common problems
The S Pen does not write
- Confirm it is an S Pen Fold Edition or S Pen Pro intended for the Fold3.
- Switch the app to pen/ink mode rather than text mode.
- Write on the inner display and inspect the tip for damage.
- Update the phone and app, and review battery-saving or permission restrictions.
Do not force a non-foldable S Pen onto the inner screen.
Notes disappear after changing devices
- Verify Samsung account synchronization before resetting the Fold3.
- Do not treat the OneNote feed as a full editable copy.
- Export important notes and PDFs independently.
- Open several exported files or restored notes on the destination device before selling or wiping the Fold3.
Handwriting looks good but is not searchable
Ink preservation, ink selection, and handwriting recognition are different capabilities. Use Samsung Notes conversion or MyScript Notes when searchable text matters, and expect recognition to vary by language and writing style.
The Bottom Line
Start with Samsung Notes. It delivers the most complete Fold3 and S Pen workflow. Add OneNote for genuine cross-platform notebooks, MyScript Notes for handwriting conversion, or a focused companion such as Keep, Evernote, or Notion when a specific workflow requires it.
