For most beginners, the best free route is one structured curriculum plus an AI tutor used for explanations and debugging—not for writing every answer. Start with freeCodeCamp if you need guided, project-first practice. Add MDN Learn Web Development when your goal is websites and you need durable HTML, CSS, and JavaScript reference material. Use GitHub Copilot (or a chat-based assistant) to ask questions, generate small hints, and investigate errors while you write and test the code yourself.
This combination can replace the instructional part of a paid bootcamp, but it does not remove the need for deliberate practice, independent debugging, and finished projects. A productive setup has three parts:

Add reference material only when the project requires it.
AI is most valuable after you have made an attempt. A failed attempt gives the assistant code, an error message, and your current hypothesis to examine. Asking for a complete solution before trying turns practice into copying and makes it difficult to recognize the same problem later.

Choose freeCodeCamp for a guided first step
freeCodeCamp is the clearest starting point when you are unsure what to study next. Lessons run in a browser, include hands-on exercises, and lead to projects rather than stopping at explanations. The sequence reduces the number of decisions a beginner has to make: you receive a task, write code, see the result, and move forward when the behavior is correct.
Use it as your spine, not as a complete substitute for curiosity. When an exercise introduces a concept, pause and ask what problem the concept solves. Keep a note of unfamiliar terms, then look them up in documentation or ask AI for an explanation in plain language. Once you finish a project, change one requirement yourself so that you are no longer following instructions verbatim.

When a page feels dense, ask AI to explain one paragraph or one API at a time; do not ask it to replace the entire lesson.
Use Copilot when you have code to examine
GitHub publishes a setup specifically for learning to code that frames Copilot as a tutor. In that role, it can explain a line, propose a smaller hint, suggest a test case, or help you investigate an error while you remain the author of the program. Its broader learning material positions Copilot as support for building programming skills, writing better code, and shipping secure projects.
Copilot is most useful after you can describe the intended behavior and show the failing case. If you have not written any code yet, return to the curriculum and attempt the exercise first. A generated answer that happens to pass one test can still use a concept you do not understand or fail on an input you did not consider.

A repeatable AI-assisted study loop
Use the following loop for every lesson or project. It works with a browser exercise, an MDN example, or code in your own editor.

Write one sentence such as “I need a function that returns the largest number in an array, including an empty-array decision.” A specific objective gives the assistant something testable to discuss.
- Attempt the solution without AI. Spend enough time to form a hypothesis, even if the code is incomplete. Record what you expected to happen and what actually happened.
- Ask for a concept, hint, or question. Request an explanation of the relevant idea, a smaller next step, or a test case. Tell the assistant not to provide the finished solution.
- Write the next change yourself. Type the code, run it, and observe the result. Do not paste a suggestion without understanding each part.
- Verify against evidence. Compare behavior with the curriculum’s tests, official documentation, and your own edge cases. Treat an AI response as a hypothesis until it survives those checks.
- Explain the result back. In your notes, describe why the code works, what assumptions it makes, and what input would break it. If you cannot explain it, ask for a simpler explanation and then rewrite the code.
- Refactor only after correctness. Once tests pass, ask for a review focused on readability, risks, and missing cases—not an automatic rewrite.
Prompts that teach instead of handing over answers
GitHub’s official learning setup gives this exact instruction: Teach me coding concepts and best practices, but do not provide solutions.

How to verify AI-generated explanations and code
GitHub recommends checking the correctness of AI-generated responses. Make that a routine rather than a final precaution.
- Run the smallest reproducible example. Remove unrelated code and see whether the claim still holds.
- Test normal and unusual inputs. Include empty collections, zero, negative values, very large values, unexpected text, and missing fields when those cases apply.
- Read the relevant documentation. Confirm names, argument order, return values, browser support, and error behavior in the language or platform reference.
- Compare two explanations. If the assistant is uncertain or gives conflicting answers, ask it to state its assumptions and then verify those assumptions independently.
- Inspect every dependency and command. Do not run installation commands or copy configuration you cannot explain. A working snippet can still introduce unnecessary packages or unsafe defaults.
- Keep the failing test. Once you fix a bug, preserve a test that would catch the regression. This turns a one-time answer into durable knowledge.
A practical progression from lessons to projects
Stage 1: Finish a small unit without AI-written answers
Complete the first freeCodeCamp or MDN unit using the exercises as intended. AI may clarify vocabulary or explain an error, but you write the exercise solution. The purpose is to establish a baseline of what you can do unaided.

Stage 2: Rebuild a familiar example from memory
Close the lesson and recreate a small example: a form, a data transformation, a command-line script, or another result that matches your chosen path. When you forget a detail, consult documentation first and use AI to explain the detail second.

Stage 3: Add one changed requirement
Modify the example so that it no longer matches the lesson. Add validation, a different input shape, an alternate layout, or a new output format. Ask AI for questions that help you plan the change, not for the implementation.
Stage 4: Build a project with a written specification
Write a short specification before coding: inputs, outputs, constraints, and at least three acceptance tests. A small project could combine several concepts from the curriculum. Use AI to critique missing cases and to explain errors after you attempt each feature.
Stage 5: Request a risk-focused review
When the project works, ask for a review that looks for incorrect assumptions, inaccessible interactions, poor error handling, and security risks. Verify every finding yourself and make changes one at a time. Keep a changelog describing the problem, your test, and the fix.
Keeping an error log that accelerates learning
An error log prevents you from asking the same vague question repeatedly. For each problem, record:
- Symptom: the exact output, error text, or unexpected behavior.
- Hypothesis: what you think is causing it.
- Experiment: the smallest code or input change you tried.
- Result: what changed after the experiment.
- Fix: the final change and why it works.
- Transfer: one other situation where the same principle may apply.
Give this log to the AI when you need help. The history lets it challenge your hypothesis instead of guessing from a pasted file with no context.
FreeCodeCamp versus MDN: which should you start with?
Choose freeCodeCamp when you need a prescribed sequence, frequent exercises, and project milestones. Choose MDN when you already know the basics or specifically want web-platform documentation and a frontend pathway. Do not alternate between them every few minutes. Finish a meaningful unit in the primary resource, then use the other resource to clarify one concept or implement one project requirement. This keeps progress measurable while still building the habit of consulting authoritative documentation.
Can you learn programming without paying for a bootcamp?
Yes. The cited curricula provide free lessons, projects, and documentation, and an AI assistant can supply on-demand explanations. What a free path does not automatically provide is a schedule, external accountability, personal feedback, or a guaranteed sequence toward a particular job. You create those supports yourself by setting a weekly deliverable, publishing or saving finished projects, maintaining an error log, and asking peers or an AI reviewer focused questions.
