There is no single best free VTuber app for every workflow. For an existing Live2D Cubism avatar, start with VTube Studio. To create a 3D avatar, use VRoid Studio and export it as a VRM file; you will then need a separate compatible app to animate and stream it. Warudo is one option for 3D animation, but its free streaming permission has conditions.
Choose software by what you need to do
VTuber software can mean an avatar maker, a face-tracking and animation app, or a tool for managing scenes and livestreams. Those jobs do not always belong to the same program. Before downloading, check your model format and decide whether you need to create an avatar, animate one in real time, or both.

- Already have a Live2D Cubism model: try VTube Studio.
- Want to make a 3D avatar: create it in VRoid Studio, then use an animation app that supports VRM.
- Want a 3D animation and streaming environment: consider Warudo, after checking its streaming license conditions.
This is a sourced shortlist, not a hands-on performance ranking or a census of every VTuber app. The official documentation does not establish a universal winner.
Best free VTuber software by workflow
| Software | Best fit | What the free use covers | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| VTube Studio | Tracking and animating an existing Live2D Cubism avatar | The desktop app is free. Mobile apps are free with optional PRO features. The vendor says individuals and smaller VTuber agencies or companies can use it commercially without PRO or DLC. | It does not load VRoid/VRM models. Webcam mode has a watermark; certain mobile-to-PC and logo-removal features require PRO. macOS features are limited, and webcam tracking there is described as highly experimental. |
| VRoid Studio | Creating and customizing a 3D avatar | The official product page describes the software as free and supports exporting created models as VRM for compatible applications. | It creates models; it is not by itself a complete real-time tracking and stream-composition workflow. Terms for third-party assets are separate. |
| Warudo | 3D avatar animation, scene control, motion capture, and livestreaming | Non-streaming use is free. Streaming may be free for eligible creators who meet the handbook’s ownership and contract conditions. | Free streaming is conditional, not universal. Corporate stream use requires Warudo Pro. |
VTube Studio: best starting point for Live2D
VTube Studio is designed for Live2D Cubism models, not VRM avatars. Its manual explicitly says VRoid/VRM is unsupported: VTube Studio model and system requirements. If your model came from VRoid Studio, you need a different compatible animation app rather than trying to import it directly.

Tracking options and setup guidance
The official manual describes iOS tracking as the strongest of its listed options, followed by webcam tracking and then Android tracking. Actual results depend on device capability, lighting, network setup, and software versions; these are vendor descriptions, not independent performance tests.
- For webcam eye and blink tracking, VTube Studio recommends 1280×720 or higher and says 15–30 FPS is sufficient.
- If you already have a suitable webcam, you can try webcam tracking without buying another camera.
- Check the current manual for operating-system and feature requirements. The vendor lists Windows and macOS desktop versions, but macOS has feature limitations and webcam tracking is described as highly experimental.
Free-tier and licensing details
The free version can load your own models, but webcam mode carries a watermark. The FAQ says mobile-to-PC streaming beyond five minutes and logo removal require PRO. Commercial-use guidance depends on organization size: the vendor says individuals and smaller agencies or companies may use VTube Studio commercially without PRO or DLC, while larger companies need additional licensing. Treat that distinction as vendor guidance, not legal advice. See the VTube Studio FAQ for the vendor’s current explanations.
VRoid Studio: free 3D avatar creation
VRoid Studio is for making and customizing a 3D avatar and exporting it as a VRM file. It does not replace a separate face-tracking, animation, or scene-composition application. Choose that next app based on the VRM support and streaming features you need.
VRoid lets creators specify terms for model data they make, including commercial-use permission and credit requirements. Models and assets from pixiv or other third parties may have separate terms. Read the rules for each model, clothing item, texture, or accessory before using it in monetized content. Details are on the VRoid Studio official page.
Warudo: 3D animation with conditional free streaming
Warudo combines 3D avatar animation, scene control, motion-capture features, and livestreaming. Its handbook says non-streaming activities can be used for free. Free streaming is narrower: the creator must exclusively own the VTuber intellectual property and platform accounts, and must not be contractually obligated to stream a specified number of hours each week, except for a contract directly with a major livestreaming platform. Corporate users may evaluate and test the Steam version, but must purchase Warudo Pro to stream. Check the Warudo Handbook and your own agreements before relying on free streaming permission.

For a Live2D avatar
- Confirm that the avatar is a Live2D Cubism model and review the model creator’s terms.
- Install VTube Studio on a supported computer or mobile device, then load the model using the app’s current setup instructions.
- Choose webcam or phone tracking. For webcam eye and blink tracking, use a camera at 1280×720 or higher where possible; the manual describes 15–30 FPS as sufficient.
- Check the free-tier limits before choosing mobile-to-PC streaming or removing the logo. If you are using the software commercially through a larger company, ask the vendor about licensing.
- Test facial movement and blinking under your actual lighting and camera position before going live. Adjust the device or lighting if tracking is unreliable.
For a 3D avatar
- Create and customize the avatar in VRoid Studio, then export the model as VRM.
- Choose an animation and tracking application that explicitly supports VRM. Warudo is one documented 3D option; VTube Studio is not a VRM loader.
- Import the model into the compatible app and configure tracking, scenes, and your streaming workflow there.
- Read the model’s usage terms and the app’s commercial and streaming license conditions before monetizing or broadcasting.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Trying to load a VRoid model into VTube Studio: it supports Live2D Cubism, not VRM. Use a VRM-compatible animation app.
- Assuming “free” means every feature is free: VTube Studio’s watermark and mobile-to-PC limits apply, while Warudo’s free streaming has eligibility conditions.
- Assuming the avatar maker also animates the avatar: VRoid Studio creates and exports a model; a compatible animation app is still needed for real-time performance.
- Using third-party models or assets without checking rights: creator terms and third-party licenses can differ, including around commercial use and credit.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running around the clock—not to animate a live VTuber camera—StreamNeo is a separate cloud service, not VTuber animation software. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams your upload at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
