OBS Studio is the best free software to start with if your church has a computer that can stay on during the broadcast. It is free, open-source software with no watermarks or feature limits, and it can send a prerecorded sermon to YouTube Live. The trade-off is that your computer and internet connection must keep running. For a sermon stream that should continue with the computer off, StreamNeo is the cloud alternative to try first: it loops uploaded videos on YouTube, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day.

Which free software should you use?

OBS Studio for a church-owned computer

OBS Studio is free for anyone to use, open source under GPLv2, and has no watermarks or feature limitations, according to the OBS Project Help Portal. It connects from your computer directly to a streaming service, so it is a practical choice when the church already has a suitable computer, a stable internet connection, and someone available to monitor the broadcast. Read the OBS Project Help Portal.

OBS is free software, but operating a local stream is not cost-free in every sense: the computer, electricity, internet service, setup time, and monitoring still matter. Their costs vary by church and were not quantified here.

Cloud streaming when the computer cannot stay on

StreamNeo is #1 for a church that needs an always-on YouTube stream without leaving a local encoder running: it loops uploaded videos from the cloud at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with the first day free. StreamNeo is a paid service after that first day, not free software. Its cloud workflow is upload a sermon or playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. See StreamNeo for the service details.

Another cloud option, Streamloop, describes playlist streaming from its servers to YouTube and other RTMP platforms. Its site says usage consumes credits based on quality, framerate, and duration, so it is a paid option for sustained streaming. Check its current costs, limits, account access, and recovery behavior directly before choosing it; vendor claims do not establish comparative uptime, quality, support, or ease of use. Streamloop.

How to loop a recorded sermon with OBS and YouTube Live

The exact OBS labels and workflow can vary by version. The steps below describe the setup to configure and verify, rather than promising a particular click path. OBS documentation confirms the software’s direct connection to streaming services, but the specific sermon-loop controls should be checked in the OBS version you install.

  1. Confirm livestream access. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live broadcast for the church channel. YouTube’s eligibility and activation requirements can depend on the channel and may change; follow the current YouTube Live streaming guidance for the account’s requirements.
  2. Prepare the OBS scene. Add the prerecorded sermon video as a media or video source, or prepare a playlist if you want several recordings in sequence. Configure the source to loop if your OBS version offers that option. Verify that the source returns to the beginning as intended; do not assume that an individual video and a playlist handle transitions identically.
  3. Connect OBS to the YouTube broadcast. Use the current stream workflow shown in YouTube Studio and OBS. Treat the stream key as a password: enter it only in OBS’s streaming settings, do not publish it or share it in screenshots, and reset it in YouTube if it is exposed.
  4. Check picture and sound. Preview the scene and confirm the video is framed correctly, audio is audible and synchronized, and there is no unwanted desktop or notification capture. If the sermon has an opening or closing slate, confirm that the stream returns to the right point when the loop restarts.
  5. Run a private or unlisted test. Test the complete sequence, including the end of one sermon and the beginning of the next. Check audio continuity and YouTube’s stream-health status before scheduling a public service. A successful local preview alone does not confirm that YouTube is receiving a stable broadcast.
  6. Monitor the live session. Watch OBS’s dropped-frame indicator and YouTube’s stream health. OBS says increasing dropped frames can mean the connection is unstable or cannot keep up with the selected bitrate. Reduce the bitrate or improve the connection if the stream cannot sustain the chosen settings; retest before relying on the setup unattended.

OBS connects directly from the computer, so closing OBS, shutting down the computer, or losing its network connection stops the local broadcast. Decide who will monitor the stream and respond to a warning, connection problem, or copyright interruption. Check current YouTube guidance before relying on a particular archive duration or a schedule for repeatedly starting and stopping broadcasts.

Copyright checks for recorded church services

YouTube says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content. A match can result in a placeholder, interruption, termination, or a copyright strike. Even when a church has permission to use licensed material, the rights holder may need to allowlist the channel through Content ID for the live stream not to be interrupted. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

Check rights for the sermon recording and every included element: worship songs, backing tracks, lyrics, photographs, illustrations, video clips, and guest-speaker contributions. YouTube lists permission, applicable copyright exceptions, public-domain status, and Creative Commons terms as possible routes for using others’ work, but none guarantees that a claim or strike will not occur. A church or nonprofit label does not by itself provide permission.

Fair use is a fact-specific assessment, and rules differ by jurisdiction. YouTube notes that nonprofit use may be favored in a fair-use analysis but is not an automatic defense; adding commentary or other material does not automatically make a use fair.
