For one video, add an OBS Media Source and enable Loop. For a rotation of videos, add a VLC Video source, make a playlist, and enable Loop Playlist; VLC must be installed with the same 64-bit or 32-bit architecture as OBS.
Which OBS loop method should you use?
| Need | OBS source | Repeat setting | Extra software |
|---|---|---|---|
| Repeat one gaming VOD | Media Source | Loop | None beyond OBS |
| Rotate several VODs in sequence | VLC Video | Loop Playlist | VLC installed with architecture matching OBS |
These are playback controls for sources inside OBS. They do not change YouTube playback; OBS sends the composed scene to YouTube as an encoder stream. OBS documents local support for formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, and WebM, and its Media Source loop setting is off by default. See OBS’s Media Sources documentation.
How to loop one gaming VOD with OBS Media Source
- Install OBS Studio. Download it from the official OBS Help Portal. OBS describes its software as free and open source, with no watermark or commercial-use restriction; the official download does not bundle adware.
- Create a scene. In OBS, use the Scenes panel to create or select the scene that will contain the prerecorded video.
- Add the video. In the Sources panel, select + > Media Source, give the source a name, and choose your local VOD file.
- Enable repeat. In the Media Source properties, turn on Loop, then confirm the source settings.
- Check the scene. Watch the OBS preview through the end of the file to confirm it restarts, and check that the video fits the canvas and the audio is audible at a suitable level.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and set up an encoder stream. Use YouTube’s stream configuration in OBS to connect the encoder. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions; keep the stream key private.
- Go live and monitor it. Confirm the preview and stream status in Live Control Room before and after starting the stream. OBS encodes and sends the scene; YouTube distributes the live broadcast.
How to loop a playlist of gaming VODs
- Install VLC. Install VLC before adding the source. OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC libraries; OBS documents that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Add a VLC Video source. In the OBS Sources panel, select + > VLC Video. If this option is missing, check that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS.
- Build the playlist. In the source properties, add the local video files in the order you want them to play. Review the list for missing files and unintended ordering.
- Enable playlist repeat. Turn on Loop Playlist in the VLC Video source properties and apply the settings.
- Preview the transitions. Watch a full cycle, including the end of one VOD and start of the next. Check that each file’s audio and framing are acceptable in the composed scene.
- Send the scene to YouTube. Use the same encoder setup in Live Control Room and OBS described above. The playlist loops locally in OBS; YouTube receives the resulting live output.
Check YouTube access and content rights before broadcasting
- Live-stream eligibility: Confirm the channel can live stream and has no restriction preventing access. YouTube says enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s live-streaming overview.
- Policy compliance: YouTube live streams must follow its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. A channel restriction can affect live-stream access.
- Rights to the full VOD: Check that you have permission to rebroadcast the gameplay recording and every included element, especially licensed music, overlays, guest content, and third-party clips. A video being available on your computer does not establish that all of its content is cleared for a live rebroadcast.
Keeping a prerecorded YouTube stream running without a PC
OBS is the free Windows route when you want local control and can keep the PC running. If your goal is an always-on YouTube loop without leaving a computer or home connection on, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload your recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, without re-encoding; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
Start the free first day by registering at StreamNeo.

Troubleshooting OBS looping and YouTube delivery
- Media Source plays once and stops: Open its properties and confirm Loop is enabled. The setting is off by default in OBS.
- VLC Video is missing from the Sources menu: Install VLC, then restart OBS if needed. Check that VLC’s architecture matches OBS; the OBS documentation specifically requires 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
- A file does not play: Confirm the file exists at the selected path and uses a format supported by OBS’s Media Source. Re-select the file in the source properties if it was moved.
- The playlist does not repeat: Check Loop Playlist in the VLC Video source properties. Do not confuse that source setting with YouTube’s playback controls.
- The video repeats but audio is missing or wrong: Check the source’s audio output and OBS mixer levels, then preview the scene before going live. Also verify the source file itself has the expected audio track.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Check that OBS is connected with the current stream configuration from YouTube Live Control Room and that the stream key was copied correctly. Keep the key private; if it is exposed, replace it in YouTube before continuing.
- Live streaming is unavailable: Check channel eligibility and any access restriction in YouTube Studio. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours according to YouTube’s live-streaming help.
Cost and equipment
OBS and VLC provide a free software workflow for looping a local file or playlist. The documented setup needs a Windows PC running OBS and an internet connection to send the encoder output; VLC is an additional free installation only for the playlist method. A capture card or stream-control device is not required for this local-file workflow.
