Start with FFmpeg’s ffprobe or VLC’s Codec Information to find out what a recording contains; use MediaInfo if you need a more detailed report. If the file’s streams are readable and the problem appears limited to its container, try remuxing a copy. Remuxing repackages existing streams—it cannot be relied on to restore missing or corrupted video data.
Choose the right free tool for the first check
First determine whether the file opens and what streams, codecs, and container it contains. These tools help inspect or process media; none is established as a universal repair utility.
| Tool | Best use | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg / ffprobe | Probe media properties; FFmpeg can also process, remux, or convert files. | Command-line oriented, so choose options carefully. |
| VLC | Try playback and inspect codecs through its graphical interface; VLC documentation also describes remuxing. | Labels and procedures can vary by version. |
| MediaInfo | Read detailed technical information about a media file. | Focused on reporting information rather than repairing files. |
Inspect the file before attempting a repair
- Keep the original. Make a copy and perform any attempted repair on that copy. Inspection and remuxing do not guarantee recovery.
- Try opening the copy in VLC. If it plays, VLC’s Windows FAQ says to use Tools → Codec Information to identify codecs. Menu labels may differ by version or operating system.
- Use ffprobe for a command-line probe. For example, run
ffprobe "input.mp4"in a terminal after installing FFmpeg. Replace the filename with the path to your copy. Review whether the file and its streams are recognized; the command reports information, it does not repair the file. - Get more detail if needed. Open the file in MediaInfo when VLC’s codec details are insufficient, as VideoLAN recommends.
- Classify the symptom. A file that opens but has a suspected packaging or container problem may be a candidate for a remux attempt. If streams are unreadable, truncated, or damaged, these checks do not establish that a remux can restore them.
When remuxing is worth trying
A remux demuxes and re-muxes the existing streams into a container. It is a packaging operation, not a re-creation of video or audio data. Consider it only when the streams can be read and the fault appears container-level.
With FFmpeg, a basic stream-copy remux attempt is:
ffmpeg -i "input.mp4" -map 0 -c copy "output.mkv"
Run it on your copy, not the original. This example attempts to copy the streams into a new container without re-encoding. It can fail if the input streams cannot be read or are incompatible with the chosen output container; it does not guarantee a playable result. Open the output and check the parts that previously failed. If the video or audio data itself is absent or corrupted, this operation cannot be assumed to recover it.

Do not confuse a bad recording with an OBS streaming problem
If a recording plays correctly but an OBS live stream drops frames or has connection issues, that points to a streaming-path problem, not necessarily file corruption. Follow the OBS Project’s official Help Portal guidance for dropped frames or connection issues and its x264 guide rather than trying to repair the recording.
OBS itself is free and open source under GPLv2. The OBS Project says it has no watermarks or other limitations and can be used commercially without restrictions; download it from the official OBS website.

Or let it run in the cloud
For a prerecorded video you want to keep live on YouTube, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option—not a video-repair tool. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera.
