OBS Studio is the strongest free-software starting point for looping recorded lessons into a YouTube Live broadcast. It is free, open source, has no watermark or usage limitations, and can be used commercially, according to the OBS Project. The trade-off is that a local OBS stream depends on your computer and internet connection staying available; “free software” does not mean a 24/7 broadcast runs without operational costs or monitoring.
Which free software should you use?
Use OBS Studio if you want a free encoder running on your own computer. YouTube supports software encoding programs for sending a stream from a computer, and OBS is an open-source option that the OBS Project says is free to use for any reason, without a watermark or usage restrictions, including commercial use.
This is a recommendation based on the software’s documented status and YouTube’s supported encoder workflow—not a hands-on test showing that a particular computer can run lessons continuously. Neither source establishes a minimum PC specification or guarantees 24/7 uptime.
What you need before starting
Confirm YouTube Live eligibility
YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Live content must also follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance before preparing your broadcast.

Plan for a computer that stays online
With OBS, your computer encodes and sends the lesson video to YouTube. The machine must remain on and the internet connection must remain available for the local stream to continue. YouTube’s guidance does not prescribe a particular PC or connection for this use, so test the hardware and network you intend to use rather than relying on an assumed minimum specification.
Set up OBS and start a lesson stream
YouTube’s computer-streaming guidance recommends testing the workflow, checking the Live Control Room preview, verifying the stream can be accessed, and monitoring audio and video. Use those checks before relying on a continuous broadcast.

- Verify the channel. Confirm YouTube Live access and check that there is no live-streaming restriction from the previous 90 days.
- Install OBS Studio. Get the software from the OBS Project Help Portal. OBS is free and open source; there is no software watermark or commercial-use fee according to the project.
- Prepare the lesson playback in OBS. Add the recorded lesson as a media source in a scene, then configure its playback behavior for your intended broadcast. If you want multiple lessons to play in sequence, build and test that sequence before going live. The sources cited here do not establish a specific multi-file looping workflow, so verify the controls in your OBS version and test the complete sequence locally.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream and use YouTube’s encoder setup instructions to connect OBS. Treat the stream key as private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your channel.
- Check the preview before broadcasting. Confirm the intended lesson is visible, audio is audible, and the stream is accessible to the audience you intend. Review the Live Control Room preview rather than assuming that a successful OBS connection means viewers can see and hear the right content.
- Start the stream and monitor it. Watch the broadcast after launch and check audio and video quality, as YouTube recommends. For a long-running lesson channel, periodically confirm the correct lesson is still playing and the connection has not stopped.
Protect the channel and lesson content
- Use material you have permission to stream. YouTube requires live content to comply with its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Recorded lessons can contain music, images, clips, or other material whose rights are separate from the lesson itself; check permissions before broadcasting.
- Review the audience and visibility settings. Confirm that the stream’s access settings match the intended audience before sharing its link.
- Test the actual recording. Check the beginning, middle, and end of each lesson for silence, missing video, unexpected transitions, or material that should not be public.
- Keep the stream key private. Store it securely and reset it through YouTube if it is exposed.
What “free” does—and does not—cover
OBS has no software charge or commercial-use restriction according to the OBS Project. A local 24/7 broadcast still relies on your own computer, power, network connection, and attention when something goes wrong. The sources do not establish a specific cost, power draw, or reliability level for that setup, so those depend on your equipment and service.
A cloud-hosted looping service is a different approach: lesson files are uploaded, and a remote service sends the feed, so your personal computer does not have to remain on.
