For a finished photo-and-video montage with music that you can download as an MP4, Canva’s slideshow maker is the closest fit. For an editable presentation you can share or hand off as a PowerPoint file, use Google Slides or LibreOffice Impress. Canva can also make presentation decks, but check the export format and inspect the result if layout fidelity matters.
Choose the output before choosing the app
A video montage and a presentation deck are different deliverables. An MP4 plays as a finished sequence; viewers generally do not edit it slide by slide. A presentation remains a set of slides that can be presented live, shared for editing, or opened in compatible presentation software.

Canva: make a photo slideshow video
Canva’s dedicated slideshow maker describes a template-based workflow: add photos or videos, choose a soundtrack, then download the finished slideshow as a high-resolution MP4. Canva currently says slideshow creation and downloads are free, downloads have no count limit, and designs do not carry a watermark. These are Canva’s claims about its service, not a promise that every template or media asset is free.
The page distinguishes free stock photos, video, and music from premium media available through Canva Pro. If you use a premium asset, check the account’s current terms and the design’s download options rather than assuming the whole project can be exported at no charge.

Photo and video upload limits Canva lists
Canva’s slideshow page lists JPEG/JPG, PNG, HEIC/HEIF, and WebP for photos. Image files must be below 50 MB and 250 million total pixels; only static WebP is accepted. Listed video formats include MOV, GIF, MP4, MPEG, MKV, and WEBM, with uploads up to 1 GB. See Canva’s slideshow maker page for the live requirements, since upload rules can change.
Google Slides: collaborate on an editable deck
Google Slides is a practical choice when other people need to review or edit the slideshow, or when you need a presentation rather than a rendered video. Google says anyone with a Google Account can create in Slides. Its product page describes co-editing, comments, action items, sharing controls, PowerPoint import and direct editing, and mobile access.

Offline creation and editing are available, but Slides is not a local-first desktop editor: plan for the web workflow and set up offline access when you need it. Google identifies recording, speaker spotlight, and some AI features as paid-plan or add-on features, so do not assume those extras are included in the basic offering. LibreOffice Impress: work locally on a computer
Impress is LibreOffice’s presentation and slideshow application, making it the desktop option here for building a photo deck without centering the workflow on a web editor. The official Impress Guide 7.6 identifies photo-based slide-show creation and documents compatibility with Microsoft PowerPoint formats, including .ppt and .pptx. Treat those details as version-specific: that guide covers Impress 7.6, not every later release. The guide is available from LibreOffice’s Impress documentation.

If a PowerPoint file contains complex layouts, fonts, animations, or other formatting that must remain intact, work from a copy and inspect it in the intended presentation software. The documented format support does not by itself establish that every deck will convert without changes.
Canva presentations: use templates but keep an editable deck
Canva’s presentation editor is an alternative when visual templates and drag-and-drop design matter more than a dedicated video-slideshow workflow. Canva describes sharing presentations, downloading PNG, JPEG, or PDF files, and converting a presentation to PowerPoint or Google Slides. Its presentation page explains the export workflow, but conversion quality has not been established here. Verify that the recipient’s required format works for your deck before relying on an export.

Which one should you choose?
- Choose Canva’s slideshow maker if the goal is a ready-to-play MP4 with photos, video, and music.
- Choose Google Slides if several people need to edit or comment on a deck, or if PowerPoint import and editing are important.
- Choose LibreOffice Impress if you want a locally installed desktop presentation workflow and PowerPoint-format support documented for the 7.6 guide.
- Choose Canva presentations if you want a template-driven deck and are willing to check the exported file before handing it off.
A projector or presentation remote can help when showing a finished slideshow in person, but neither is needed to create one. Apple Keynote may also be worth investigating for an Apple-device workflow, but current free availability, photo-slideshow steps, and export compatibility are not established by the Apple documentation considered here.
