The best free firewall for most Windows 10 and Windows 11 users is Microsoft Defender Firewall. It is built into Windows, works with Windows Security, and provides sensible inbound protection without another installation or security-suite conflict. TinyWall is the best optional Windows control layer, while macOS and Linux users should generally start with their systems’ native firewall tools.

A third-party firewall can still be useful when you need clearer application prompts, connection history, outbound controls, privacy filtering, or more accessible rule management. A third-party firewall is not automatically safer than the built-in firewall, however, and installing overlapping security software can cause broken networking, duplicate alerts, or difficult troubleshooting.

Key takeaways

  • Microsoft Defender Firewall is the best free firewall for most Windows 10 and Windows 11 home users because it is built in and maintained with Windows.
  • TinyWall is an optional Windows choice for readers who want easier application allowlisting without replacing the need for antivirus and operating-system updates.
  • GlassWire Free is primarily a network-monitoring tool because click-to-block, lockdown mode, ask-to-connect, profiles, and bidirectional firewall control are listed as premium features.
  • ZoneAlarm Free Firewall supports Windows 10 and Windows 11, but ZoneAlarm warns users to remove other antivirus or firewall products before installation.
  • macOS users should begin with the built-in application firewall, while Linux users should choose a native framework such as nftables, UFW, or firewalld according to their distribution and use case.

What is the best free firewall?

Microsoft Defender Firewall is the best free firewall overall for most Windows users. Microsoft includes the firewall in Windows, integrates it with Windows Security, and provides controls for network profiles, allowed applications, and ports. The built-in firewall is usually the most sensible choice for browsing, streaming, gaming, video calls, office work, and ordinary home networks.

What does a firewall actually do?

A firewall filters network traffic according to rules. A firewall can examine traffic entering or leaving a computer, match traffic to an application, port, protocol, network profile, or address, and then allow or block the connection.

Inbound traffic comes toward the computer from another device or the internet. A firewall can reject unsolicited inbound connection attempts, which reduces exposure from services that should not be reachable. Outbound traffic leaves the computer for a website, server, cloud service, update system, or other destination. Outbound rules can alert you to or block an application’s connection attempt.

Microsoft explains that ordinary computers are commonly protected by both a router firewall and a device-level software firewall. A router can provide a network boundary, while a host firewall can apply rules to the individual computer and its applications. Read Microsoft’s explanation of what a firewall is and how router and device firewalls work.

Most modern firewalls use stateful filtering: they track the state of permitted connections so that legitimate reply traffic can return without treating every packet as a new unsolicited connection. Application rules add another layer by associating traffic with a particular executable or service.

What can a firewall not do?

A firewall does not replace antivirus, anti-malware protection, browser security, software updates, secure authentication, or careful behavior online. A firewall controls network traffic; it does not make every program on the computer trustworthy.

  • A firewall may block a malicious program after the program is already installed, but blocking its connection is not the same as preventing the malware from arriving.
  • Outbound prompts do not prove that an application is malicious. Malware can use a trusted process, abuse an already-approved application, encrypt its traffic, or communicate through legitimate cloud services.
  • A firewall cannot stop a user from voluntarily granting an application access or entering credentials into a malicious website.
  • A firewall does not replace patching, strong passwords, multifactor authentication, secure backups, or router configuration.

“Two-way firewall” means that a product can apply both inbound and outbound rules. It does not mean that the product can perfectly identify every harmful outbound connection.

Does Windows already have a firewall?

Yes. Windows 10 and Windows 11 already include Microsoft Defender Firewall. Check the existing firewall before downloading another product:

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Firewall & network protection.
  3. Review the active network profile and confirm that the firewall is on.
  4. Select Allow an app through firewall when a trusted application is blocked.
  5. Use the advanced firewall console only when you understand profiles, services, ports, and rule direction.

Microsoft’s Windows Firewall and Network Protection documentation covers the network-profile controls, application exceptions, and port settings available through Windows Security.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For most home users, the built-in firewall is an appropriate default. A router usually supplies another boundary, and Microsoft Defender Antivirus and browser protections provide security functions that a firewall alone cannot provide.

Why is Microsoft Defender Firewall the best choice for most Windows users?

Microsoft Defender Firewall is the best default because it requires no additional download, is normally available as part of Windows, integrates with Windows Security, and avoids adding another privileged network-filtering component. Keeping one clearly understood firewall policy is usually easier than managing several overlapping security products.

TP-Link AC1200 WiFi Router Dual Band Wireless Internet Router (Archer A54)
  • Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
  • Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks

The main weakness is usability rather than a demonstrated lack of basic protection. Detailed outbound rule creation and auditing generally require the advanced firewall console, PowerShell, or a third-party management layer. A reader who only wants ordinary inbound protection does not need to manage those advanced rules.

Do not install a second full firewall simply because a blocked program displays an error. First check the active network profile and use Allow an app through firewall for a trusted application. Create the narrowest exception that solves the problem instead of opening a broad port range.

Is TinyWall the best free firewall for easier Windows controls?

TinyWall is a useful optional Windows choice for readers who want a more accessible way to manage application allowlisting and Windows firewall policies. TinyWall is best understood as a control and usability upgrade, not as antivirus and not as proof that Windows’ built-in firewall is inadequate.

TinyWall’s version 3.0 announcement describes TinyWall as using a separate firewall engine rather than merely piggybacking on Windows Defender Firewall. That architecture detail should be checked against the current release before publication because older descriptions may differ.

TinyWall can be a good fit when Windows Firewall’s default interface feels too technical, but application allowlisting still requires judgment. Approving a program because its name sounds familiar can permit the wrong executable. Download TinyWall only from its official project source, verify that the current release supports the target Windows version, and keep a recovery plan in case an essential service is blocked.

Is Portmaster the best free firewall for privacy and outbound visibility?

Portmaster is a candidate for technically capable users who want application-level connection visibility combined with privacy and DNS-related controls. Portmaster is not the simplest choice for a beginner who only wants a firewall that stays quietly enabled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Portmaster-type tools may filter traffic at more than one layer. DNS filtering and firewall filtering are different functions: blocking a domain through DNS does not necessarily block every possible connection to a service, and a firewall rule does not automatically remove all tracking or data collection.

Portmaster rules can interfere with software updates, authentication, cloud synchronization, games, VPNs, or virtual networking. Before enabling aggressive policies, record how to disable the tool, keep an administrator account available, and test one change at a time. Portmaster’s free and paid capabilities should be checked on the official Safing site immediately before publication.

Is ZoneAlarm Free Firewall worth installing?

ZoneAlarm Free Firewall is a legitimate traditional third-party Windows firewall for users who specifically want its interface and bundled controls, but ZoneAlarm is not the default recommendation for every Windows computer.

ZoneAlarm advertises Free Firewall for Windows 10 and Windows 11 with inbound and outbound monitoring, program access control, traffic monitoring, and network-zone settings. Those are vendor-described features, not a reason to claim that ZoneAlarm is universally safer than Microsoft Defender Firewall.

  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

Installation requires particular care. ZoneAlarm’s system requirements documentation says that the free firewall is compatible with Microsoft Defender but not with other anti-malware products, and installation guidance says to uninstall other antivirus or firewall products first. In practice, check whether another antivirus, endpoint-security product, VPN, or network filter is installed before adding ZoneAlarm.

The same requirements page lists a 2 GHz processor, 3 GB of RAM for 32-bit systems or 4 GB for 64-bit systems, 1.5 GB of disk space, and .NET Framework 3.5 or later. Hardware and software requirements can change, so confirm the live vendor page for the current release.

Is GlassWire Free a complete firewall?

No. GlassWire Free is better described as a network-monitoring companion unless its current plan changes. GlassWire is useful for seeing which applications are communicating, reviewing bandwidth use, viewing network history, and receiving traffic-related alerts.

GlassWire’s current pricing and feature comparison lists the free plan at $0 and describes it as free forever, but marks click-to-block, lockdown mode, ask-to-connect, profiles, and bidirectional firewall control as premium features. The free tier therefore should not be presented as a fully featured replacement for Windows Firewall.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
GlassWire capability Free-tier treatment in the reviewed comparison Practical meaning
Traffic graphs and network history Available in the free offering Useful for investigating unfamiliar activity and bandwidth use
Traffic-related alerts Available with free-tier limits Can draw attention to changes without necessarily blocking them
Click-to-block Listed as premium Not a free on-demand blocking control
Lockdown mode Listed as premium Not included as a free emergency network lock
Ask to connect Listed as premium Not included as a free prompt for every application connection
Firewall profiles and bidirectional control Listed as premium Advanced firewall management requires a paid plan

The pricing page reviewed for this article listed GlassWire Personal Premium at $2.99 per month when paid annually. Price, taxes, billing terms, and availability can vary by country and may change before publication. GlassWire Premium is a reasonable paid visibility upgrade, but most Windows users do not need it for baseline firewall protection.

What is the best free firewall for macOS?

The best free firewall for basic macOS inbound protection is the built-in macOS Application Firewall. macOS users should start there rather than install a Windows firewall product or assume that a monitoring utility is equivalent to a packet-filtering firewall.

The built-in macOS firewall primarily controls incoming connections to applications and services. Users who want detailed outbound prompts need a separate macOS-designed tool. LuLu is a commonly considered open-source option for outbound connection alerts, while Little Snitch is a paid alternative for detailed rule management.

Check compatibility with the target macOS release, Apple silicon, network extensions, VPNs, endpoint-security tools, and major operating-system updates before installing an outbound-control utility. Exact macOS menu labels can change between releases, so verify the current Apple documentation before publishing click-by-click instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the best free firewall for Linux?

Linux does not have one universal consumer firewall winner. The appropriate choice depends on the distribution, desktop or server role, IPv6 requirements, containers, virtual machines, SSH access, and whether the user needs port-level or application-level policy.

Linux tool Typical role Best fit Important consideration
nftables Native packet-filtering framework Advanced users and administrators who need precise rules Powerful but more technical to design and maintain
ufw Simpler firewall interface Many Ubuntu-based desktop and server installations Confirm how rules interact with IPv6, Docker, SSH, and the distribution
firewalld Dynamic firewall manager Fedora, RHEL-derived, and other environments where it is the native choice Zones and services require understanding before changing defaults
Portmaster Application-aware privacy and connection policy Users wanting per-application visibility beyond port filtering More complex and potentially disruptive than a native minimal firewall

For a Linux server, use the distribution’s documented firewall framework and write down the rules before changing them. For SSH, test a second session before closing the first one so an incorrect rule does not lock you out. For Docker, Podman, Hyper-V-style virtualization, or other virtual networks, inspect the generated interfaces and rules rather than assuming a desktop firewall sees traffic in the way you expect.

How should you choose a free firewall?

Choose according to the control problem you are actually trying to solve:

  • “I want basic protection on Windows.” Keep Microsoft Defender Firewall enabled.
  • “I want simpler Windows allow and deny controls.” Consider TinyWall after checking its current release and compatibility.
  • “I want to see which applications connect to the internet.” Use GlassWire Free for monitoring, or an outbound-control tool if you need enforcement rather than graphs.
  • “I want privacy filtering as well as firewall rules.” Consider Portmaster, but expect more configuration and test VPNs, updates, games, and cloud applications.
  • “I want a traditional third-party Windows firewall.” Consider ZoneAlarm only after checking for conflicting antivirus and firewall software.
  • “I use macOS.” Start with the built-in firewall; add outbound control only when you understand the prompts and compatibility trade-offs.
  • “I run Linux servers or a home lab.” Use the native framework appropriate to the distribution and document rules for SSH, IPv6, containers, and virtual machines.

Evaluate products on enforcement type, outbound control, application rules, network profiles, IPv4 and IPv6 behavior, boot-time protection, logging, update cadence, privacy policy, installer behavior, compatibility, and the actual free-tier limits. “Open source” does not automatically mean safer, and “free” may mean freeware, freemium, a trial, or a bundled security suite.

How do you safely set up a firewall on Windows?

  1. Check before installing. Open Windows Security, choose Firewall & network protection, and identify the active profile.
  2. Confirm the firewall is enabled. Do not disable the firewall as a troubleshooting shortcut.
  3. Test the application. If a trusted program is blocked, determine whether the program needs inbound access, outbound access, or both.
  4. Use a narrow exception. Prefer a documented application rule over opening a broad range of ports.
  5. Check other filters. VPNs, DNS filters, antivirus products, endpoint-security tools, and virtual-network software may also be affecting the connection.
  6. Record custom rules. Before a reset or major security-product change, export or document rules used by printers, games, file sharing, remote administration, virtualization, Docker, or business applications.
  7. Recheck after updates. Major Windows, VPN, game, or application updates can change executable paths and networking behavior.

Advanced users can run the following commands from an elevated PowerShell or Command Prompt window. These commands inspect or enable the native Windows firewall; they do not prove that every application rule is correct.

Get-NetFirewallProfile

Shows the status of the Domain, Private, and Public firewall profiles.

Get-NetFirewallRule -Enabled True |
  Where-Object Direction -eq "Outbound" |
  Select-Object DisplayName, Action, Profile

Provides a basic view of enabled outbound rules.

Set-NetFirewallProfile -Profile Domain,Private,Public -Enabled True

Enables the firewall for all three profiles.

netsh advfirewall show allprofiles

Displays firewall status and profile settings.

What should you do if a firewall breaks networking?

Recover in a controlled order rather than turning off every security feature:

  1. Undo the most recent firewall rule.
  2. Temporarily change a block rule to allow for testing only.
  3. Check whether the affected program needs inbound access, outbound access, or both.
  4. Check the active Windows network profile.
  5. Test VPN, DNS-filtering, antivirus, endpoint-security, and virtual-network software separately.
  6. Restore firewall defaults only as a last resort.
  7. Recreate required exceptions one at a time.

A firewall reset can remove custom rules needed by printers, games, remote administration, virtualization, Docker, file sharing, and business applications. Record or export important rules before resetting them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Gaming is a common failure case: an overly strict rule can block matchmaking, voice chat, launchers, anti-cheat services, or peer-to-peer connections. Remote workers should avoid enabling file sharing on public networks, and VPN users should test DNS, local-network access, and reconnect behavior after installing a network-filtering product.

Can you run two firewalls at once?

Running two full host-based firewalls is usually a poor default because both products may install privileged network filters, duplicate prompts, or competing rules. Some products can coexist with Microsoft Defender Antivirus or the Windows firewall in a specific configuration, but compatibility depends on exactly which component is active.

ZoneAlarm’s support documentation is an important example: ZoneAlarm says its free firewall is compatible with Microsoft Defender but not other anti-malware products. Do not interpret “works with Microsoft Defender” as a guarantee that every Microsoft or third-party security component can run alongside it.

A monitoring tool may coexist more easily than a second enforcement engine, but VPNs, DNS filters, endpoint-security products, containers, and virtual machines can still interact with it. Before installing a third-party firewall, identify which product will enforce firewall policy, create a restore or uninstall plan, and download only from the vendor’s official source.

  • MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home

Are paid firewall upgrades necessary?

Paid firewall upgrades are not necessary for most Windows home users. A paid product becomes easier to justify when the reader specifically values a polished traffic history, detailed outbound prompts, privacy filtering, multi-device coverage, or a broader antivirus and web-security suite.

GlassWire Premium is a paid visibility and control upgrade rather than a baseline requirement. ZoneAlarm Pro or Extreme Security NextGen may suit readers seeking a broader security suite, but a suite bought solely for firewall protection is usually unnecessary for a typical Windows user. Portmaster’s paid tier may interest privacy-focused technical users, while Little Snitch is a paid outbound-control option for Mac users.

Check current prices, device counts, billing periods, promotions, taxes, and renewal terms directly on the vendor’s page before buying. Commercial pricing can vary by country and account type.

Bottom line

For most people asking for the best free firewall, the correct answer is to keep the operating system’s firewall enabled rather than download a competing product. Choose Microsoft Defender Firewall on Windows, the built-in firewall on macOS for basic inbound protection, and the Linux distribution’s native framework for Linux.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Add TinyWall when Windows rule management is the problem, Portmaster when application-level privacy and outbound visibility justify extra complexity, ZoneAlarm when you specifically want a traditional third-party Windows suite, and GlassWire when monitoring is the main goal. None of those choices removes the need for antivirus, updates, secure authentication, safe downloads, and a recovery plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Windows Defender Firewall good enough?

Yes. Microsoft Defender Firewall is good enough for most Windows 10 and Windows 11 home users when the firewall is enabled and Windows remains updated. Users who need friendlier outbound prompts or detailed connection history may add a compatible control or monitoring tool, but a third-party firewall is not automatically safer.

Do I need a firewall behind a router?

Yes, keeping the computer’s firewall enabled behind a router is sensible. A router can provide a network boundary, while the device-level firewall applies rules to the individual computer, its applications, and local network profiles.

Does a firewall stop viruses and malware?

No. A firewall filters network traffic but does not replace antivirus or anti-malware protection. A firewall may block a malicious program’s connection after installation, but it cannot reliably prevent malware from arriving or make a user-approved application safe.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Is GlassWire Free a complete free firewall?

No. GlassWire Free is primarily a network-monitoring companion in the feature comparison reviewed for this article. GlassWire lists click-to-block, lockdown mode, ask-to-connect, profiles, and bidirectional firewall control as premium features.

Is ZoneAlarm compatible with other antivirus software?

ZoneAlarm’s support documentation says ZoneAlarm Free Firewall is compatible with Microsoft Defender but not other anti-malware products. ZoneAlarm instructs users to uninstall other antivirus or firewall products before installation to avoid stability and performance problems.

What is the best free firewall for gaming?

Microsoft Defender Firewall is the best starting choice for most Windows gamers because it avoids adding another network filter. If a game, launcher, voice-chat service, or anti-cheat component is blocked, create a narrow, trusted application exception instead of opening broad port ranges.

The Bottom Line

Best free firewall verdict: use Microsoft Defender Firewall on most Windows 10 and Windows 11 PCs. Choose a third-party product only for a specific need—simpler rules, stronger visibility, privacy filtering, or a broader security suite—and verify compatibility before installing it.
