You can digitize VHS without Roxio Easy VHS to DVD, but the documented free and open-source options work as a set of tools rather than as one all-in-one replacement. Connect your VCR to a compatible USB analog capture adapter, record with OBS Studio or—on Windows—with VirtualDub, then use Shotcut or FFmpeg for editing or conversion. If you want a DVD with menus, author it afterward with DVDStyler.
What you need to replace—and what you still need
Roxio describes its workflow as connecting a VCR or camcorder to a PC through a capture device and RCA cabling, capturing and editing the video, then saving digital files or burning a DVD with chapters and menus. Its product page notes that an RCA cable is not included. Corel says the Roxio Easy VHS to DVD software works only with the bundled Roxio Video Capture USB device, not third-party capture hardware. Roxio’s product workflow · Corel support on the bundled device
With alternatives, the key hardware requirement remains: you need a compatible way to feed the VCR’s analog video and audio into the computer. The software choices below cover distinct stages; none is documented as a single free replacement for Roxio’s guided capture, editing, and DVD-authoring workflow.
Which free tools handle each stage?
| Tool | Best for | Compatibility and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio | Recording video from a capture card | Its Video Capture Source can use capture cards, and its guide covers selecting audio devices and making a test recording. It is a general recording app, not a VHS-specific wizard, and the guide does not guarantee support for every adapter. OBS capture-source guide |
| VirtualDub | Capture controls and processing for technically comfortable Windows users | Its documentation discusses capture formats, codec constraints, preview-performance trade-offs, and audio-sync risk on long captures when using compatibility mode. Check the current device and driver support before relying on it. VirtualDub capture documentation |
| Shotcut | Trimming clips and editing on a timeline | Shotcut is a free, open-source, cross-platform editor. Its official page lists capture from Windows DirectShow devices and other specified sources, but it should not be treated as an all-in-one analog-to-DVD replacement. Shotcut |
| FFmpeg | Command-line conversion, stream handling, filters, and repeatable processing | It can read live capture devices and provides documented deinterlacing and scaling filters. It is command-line oriented, and filters or resizing cannot recreate detail absent from the tape. FFmpeg input devices · FFmpeg filters |
| DVDStyler | Authoring DVD video discs with interactive menus | It is a free, open-source authoring option for Linux and Windows. Use it after capture; it does not take the place of a VCR capture stage. DVDStyler |
Choose an analog capture adapter that matches your VCR
The practical hardware category is a USB analog video capture adapter with composite RCA input. S-Video is another option when both the VCR and adapter have matching S-Video connections. Roxio’s guide recommends S-Video when available and otherwise describes composite connections; that is connection guidance, not a promise of a dramatic quality gain. No connector can restore information missing from the tape. Roxio connection guidance · Roxio quality guidance

There is no universal compatibility guarantee for third-party adapters in the cited documentation. Before choosing one, match its inputs to the VCR’s outputs and check that the manufacturer provides a driver compatible with your operating system. OBS’s ability to use capture-card sources does not mean it supports every capture device.
Capture a short sample before digitizing a whole tape
- Connect matching outputs and inputs. Check that the VCR is powered on, that RCA or S-Video cables run in the correct direction, and that each plug is connected to the corresponding input. If there is no picture, check the connections and VCR output before changing software settings.
- Confirm that the computer sees the adapter. In OBS, add a Video Capture Source and select the capture device. Availability and operation depend on the adapter’s drivers and operating-system support. OBS source setup
- Select the audio input as well as the video source. Confirm that the capture device or corresponding audio input is selected and that the level is usable. Roxio lists connection problems, a powered-off VCR, tape tracking, and recording input levels among possible causes of poor results. Roxio troubleshooting and quality guidance
- Record a short test and play it back. Check that picture and sound are present and remain in sync before starting a full tape. OBS’s guide recommends verifying audio-device choices and test-recording settings. OBS capture-source guide
Edit, convert, and author only what you need
For a digital file with basic edits
Use Shotcut to trim the capture or make broader timeline edits. It is an editing option, not a required step: if the recording already suits your needs, you can keep it as captured. Shotcut

For conversion or filters
FFmpeg is suited to command-line workflows, batch processing, stream handling, and filters such as deinterlacing or scaling. Its flexibility comes with a steeper learning curve than a timeline editor. Processing may change the presentation of a capture, but it cannot manufacture source detail that was never recorded. For a DVD with menus
Use DVDStyler to author a DVD video disc and create interactive menus from the digital video you captured. This is a separate, post-capture task; if you only need a digital file, you do not need to add DVD authoring to the workflow. DVDStyler

Set realistic expectations for VHS quality and capture settings
Roxio’s support content puts the limit plainly: “Low quality VHS video cannot be converted to high quality video by transferring it to a DVD disc.” Its guidance says the result depends on the original source; sharpening and denoising can alter an image but cannot exceed the source recording’s quality. Roxio quality guidance
Capture settings also depend on the tape standard and hardware. VirtualDub’s documentation discusses PAL and NTSC settings and gives examples of 25 fps for PAL and 29.97 fps for NTSC. These are technical examples, not universal prescriptions for every tape or adapter. VirtualDub capture documentation
