Warframe is the closest free fit for most Tomb Raider fans. Its third-person perspective, parkour movement, open-world landscapes and story quests provide the strongest combination of traversal and exploration available in the verified free-to-play options. It is not an archaeological, single-player replacement: Warframe is an online live-service game built around science-fiction combat.
THE FINALS is a worthwhile second option only if fast action, destructible environments and team play matter more to you than tombs, puzzles and a cinematic solo campaign. It is a first-person competitive shooter, so the resemblance to Tomb Raider is limited.
The phrase “Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis” is treated here as your reference label. No authoritative publisher, developer or storefront listing for a Tomb Raider release with that exact title could be verified, so its release date, platform and specific mechanics should not be assumed.

What makes a free game feel like Tomb Raider?
The useful comparison is not the unverified “Legacy of Atlantis” name but the established Tomb Raider formula. The official 2013 Tomb Raider Steam description presents the series as an action-adventure built around environmental puzzles, visceral combat and discoverable tombs. It also highlights salvaging resources and upgrading weapons and tools. Steam’s tags identify single-player play, exploration, puzzles, stealth and platforming.
#1 Best Overall
- See the Classic & Remastered Visuals: Play with the original polygonal models or swap to the remastered graphics at any time.
- Travel the Globe: Follow Lara Croft around iconic locales including Cairo, Rome, Paris, and many more!
- Experience Lara’s Darkest Adventures: Uncover the secrets of Lara Croft’s past and shed light on the mystery of her disappearance.
- Languages: Voice: English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese (Brazil), Polish, Russian, Japanese, Korean; Subtitles: English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese (Brazil), Polish, Russian, Japanese, Korean, Chinese (Simplified).
That gives us six practical tests for a free alternative:
- Traversal: movement through spaces should be a meaningful part of play, not merely a way to reach the next fight.
- Exploration: landscapes or arenas should reward looking around and learning their layout.
- Puzzles or spatial problem-solving: the game should ask you to use an environment, not only defeat enemies.
- Action: combat should be substantial enough for players who enjoy Tomb Raider’s fighting sequences.
- Progression: equipment, abilities or resources should give exploration a purpose.
- Campaign feel: a solo or story-led structure is a closer match than an entirely competitive game.
No free title in the verified options reproduces all six. Warframe covers movement, exploration, story content and action better than the other candidate, while THE FINALS covers action and environmental interaction but misses the solo archaeological structure.

Warframe: the strongest free match for movement and exploration
Why it fits Tomb Raider fans
Warframe’s official Steam listing calls it a “story-driven free-to-play online action game.” It is played from a third-person perspective and explicitly features parkour, open-world landscapes and story content. Those traits make it the best match when your favorite Tomb Raider moments involve climbing through a space, finding a route, and moving fluidly between traversal and combat.
The game lists more than 30 story-based quests. That is important for players who want a substantial free campaign rather than a short demonstration. Warframe also supports single-player play, so you can approach its quests alone, while online co-op is available when you want company. The combination gives you a choice Tomb Raider does not usually need to make: explore solo or bring other players into the same action game.
Rank #2
- Live the critically acclaimed, cinematic action adventure, re built specifically for next gen consoles
- Survive high octane combat, customize Lara's weapons and gear, and overcome grueling environments to uncover the island's deadly secret
- See Lara Croft like never before, with every bead of sweat, strand of hair, and article of clothing delivered in obsessive detail
- Endure a stunningly re imagined island, fraught with new, unforgiving storms, and alive with motion
- Own the complete Tomb Raider experience with all of the DLC, including the Tomb of the Lost Adventurer, six outfits for Lara, a digital mini art book, and the digital comic " The Beginning
Warframe’s open-world areas are not presented as historical ruins or archaeological expeditions. They are science-fiction environments, and the game’s identity is centered on combat and character equipment. Nevertheless, its third-person camera, acrobatic movement and large landscapes are the closest verified overlap with Tomb Raider’s traversal appeal.
Where the comparison breaks down
- Online-first design: Warframe is an online live-service title. Even when you play a quest alone, it is not the same self-contained offline campaign structure associated with a traditional Tomb Raider release.
- Combat priority: the official description positions it as an action game, and its core loop is much more combat-heavy than a tomb-focused adventure.
- Science-fiction setting: you are not investigating a historical island or a chain of archaeological tombs. The setting, fiction and equipment are built around science fiction.
- Ongoing-service structure: content and availability are tied to a continuing online game rather than a single fixed release. Store details can change over time.
Choose Warframe because you value movement, scale and a long story path. Do not choose it expecting a direct remake of Tomb Raider’s puzzle rooms, stealth encounters or archaeological tone.

The Steam listing identifies Warframe as free-to-play and specifies single-player support, online co-op and more than 30 story-based quests. Optional purchases may exist in a free-to-play game, so “free” should be read as access without buying the base game, not as a promise that every item or convenience is included at no cost.
The Windows listing also states a 75 GB storage requirement. Reserve that space before installation and leave additional room for updates. The requirement is a published storage figure, not a performance benchmark; it does not tell you what frame rate your computer will achieve.
Who should start with Warframe?
- Players who want a third-person camera and acrobatic traversal.
- Players comfortable with an online game and continuing service model.
- Players who want dozens of story quests rather than a short free trial.
- Players who are happy for combat and equipment to matter more than archaeology.
- Players who may want to alternate between solo questing and online co-op.
If those points describe you, Warframe is the clear first download from this shortlist.

THE FINALS: a combat-first alternative with destructible spaces
What it does well for Tomb Raider-adjacent players
THE FINALS’ official Steam page describes it as a “free-to-play, fast-paced, physics-driven, first-person shooter.” Its defining feature is a fully destructible arena, with teams using the environment tactically during online matches. Buildings, cover and routes can change as the match develops, creating a kind of spatial problem-solving under pressure.
That environmental interaction may appeal if your favorite Tomb Raider scenes involve using a room’s structure to create an advantage. The difference is context: in THE FINALS, the space is a competitive arena and the objective is shaped by team play, not by discovering a tomb or solving a deliberate environmental sequence.
Why it is only a loose match
- First-person perspective: you do not see a third-person character navigating a landscape, so the visual and physical feel of traversal is fundamentally different.
- Competitive multiplayer: the official listing emphasizes online player-versus-player and co-op competition. It is not a solo cinematic adventure.
- No tomb-puzzle structure: destruction and tactical positioning replace the authored puzzle rooms and tomb discoveries associated with Tomb Raider.
- Combat-first pacing: matches are designed around rapid action rather than a long exploration campaign.
THE FINALS belongs on this list because it is free-to-play and gives the environment an unusually active role in combat. It should not be presented as the closest Tomb Raider substitute.
Who should choose THE FINALS?
- Players who primarily want quick, high-energy firefights.
- Players who enjoy changing lines of sight and cover through destruction.
- Players who already have friends for online team play.
- Players willing to trade exploration and story for competitive objectives.
If you want to play alone, follow a character-driven campaign or search for hidden tombs, this is the wrong starting point. If you want a free action game where the arena itself can be used tactically, it is the better fit of the two.
Choose by the Tomb Raider feature you miss most
If traversal is your priority
Start with Warframe. Its third-person presentation and parkour emphasis are the only verified options here that directly address the sensation of moving through a large space. Expect science-fiction environments and a combat-heavy structure rather than archaeological locations.
Rank #4
- Full game with 7 bonus missions
- 5 co-op challenge tombs
- Digital copy of original soundtrack
- All previously released outfits and skills
- New “Croft Fitness” outfit for the Tomb Raider in training
If exploration and story quests matter most
Choose Warframe and approach its story quests as the campaign component. The official listing confirms more than 30 story-based quests and supports single-player play, but the game remains online and live-service rather than a sealed single-player release.
If environmental interaction matters more than story
Try THE FINALS. Its destructible arenas let players reshape cover and routes during matches. The payoff is tactical improvisation with other players, not a carefully authored tomb puzzle.
If you want a solo, cinematic archaeological adventure
Neither verified free option meets that brief. Warframe can be played solo but remains an online science-fiction service game; THE FINALS is competitive multiplayer and first-person. A paid Tomb Raider release is the more direct route to the original formula.

Free-to-play is not the same as offline
Both recommendations are identified as free-to-play on their official Steam listings. That describes the entry price for the game, not universal offline access. Warframe explicitly requires an online service model, and THE FINALS is built around online PvP and co-op. A reliable internet connection and an account that meets the storefront’s current requirements may therefore be necessary.

Storage and hardware planning
Warframe’s Windows store listing specifies 75 GB of storage. Treat that as the published installation requirement and keep extra disk space available for updates. No performance benchmark or universal frame-rate result is established for either game here, so use the current system-requirements section for your hardware rather than relying on a generic “gaming PC” label.
Regional and service changes
Free-to-play status, online features, content and regional availability can change. Check the storefront immediately before downloading, especially if you are installing on a console or in a region different from the one shown by the listing you read.
How to test the closest fit without wasting time
- Decide whether online play is acceptable. If you require a fully offline game, remove both options from consideration; their verified descriptions rely on online service or multiplayer features.
- Pick your camera and pacing. Choose Warframe for third-person movement and longer questing. Choose THE FINALS for first-person, match-based combat.
- Check storage before starting Warframe. The Windows listing calls for 75 GB, before allowing headroom for updates.
- Start with the game’s intended mode. In Warframe, begin with story content and try solo play if you want the closest campaign-like experience. In THE FINALS, expect team matches and learn how destruction changes cover and routes.
- Reassess after the first sessions. If you are looking for tomb discovery, authored puzzles and archaeological atmosphere, neither game will fully replace Tomb Raider; stop searching for an exact match among these two.
If you specifically want the Tomb Raider reboot
The Tomb Raider Game of the Year Edition is a paid product, not a free-to-play alternative. Its official Steam listing is the appropriate reference for that edition, but verify the current platform, region and edition details before purchasing. Do not treat a paid Tomb Raider edition as part of the free recommendations above.
Bottom line
Download Warframe first if you want the strongest free approximation of Tomb Raider’s third-person movement, exploration and story-led action. Its more than 30 quests, parkour, open-world landscapes and solo support give it the broadest overlap, while its online live-service model, science-fiction setting and combat focus are substantial differences.
Choose THE FINALS only when competitive multiplayer, rapid firefights and destructible environments are the features you actually want. It is an entertaining free action game, but its first-person team-shooter structure makes it a side recommendation rather than a Tomb Raider replacement.
