There is no single best frame rate for every YouTube Live stream. YouTube supports live encoding up to 60 fps; choose 30 fps for mostly static scenes when it meets your needs, and consider 60 fps for frequent or fast motion if your encoder and connection can sustain the higher bitrate. Test the complete setup before going live.
What frame rate should you use?
Use the highest frame rate that meaningfully suits your content and remains stable at your chosen resolution and codec. For a talking-head stream, lecture, or presentation with little movement, 30 fps is often a practical choice. Fast gameplay, sports, or other scenes with frequent motion may benefit from 60 fps, provided your encoder and upload connection can sustain it.
YouTube’s current live encoder guidance supports up to 60 fps. It does not prescribe one universally best rate: its guidance is to choose reliable settings your internet connection can support. A nominally higher frame rate is not an advantage if it leads to dropped frames, interruptions, or unstable stream health.
30 fps vs. 60 fps: bitrate and trade-offs
At the same resolution, YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrate generally rises when moving from 30 fps to 60 fps. The exact recommendation depends on the codec. The following are YouTube’s recommended live ingestion bitrates, not guaranteed connection requirements or a quality ranking. Values are Mbps. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance for the full current table and minimum settings.

When 30 fps is a good fit
- Your stream is mostly a speaker, slides, a screen share, or another relatively static scene.
- Your connection or encoder has limited headroom at the resolution you want to stream.
- You prefer a lower bitrate target and a stable stream over extra temporal detail that your content may not need.
When to consider 60 fps
- The picture contains fast or frequent motion, such as gameplay or sports.
- Your encoder can produce the selected resolution and frame rate reliably.
- Your upload connection can sustain the applicable bitrate, with enough capacity for normal variation rather than only a brief peak.
These are practical selection guidelines, not a promise that 60 fps will look better in every stream. The result also depends on the source footage, encoder, codec, resolution, and connection.
Set the live encoder correctly
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS and the H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 codecs. It recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe frequency, with four seconds as the maximum. Your encoder’s resolution, frame rate, and bitrate need to match the stream you intend to send. YouTube detects encoder settings and transcodes the live stream into output formats for viewers using different devices and networks.

- Built-in Mic & Automatic Light Correction: Communicate clearly with the built-in noise-reducing microphone. The camera also intelligently adjusts the video brightness to make you look your best, even in poor lighting conditions.
- Choose resolution and frame rate. Set the output resolution and either 30 or 60 fps in your encoder. YouTube recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default; manual selection is available with a custom stream key.
- Select a codec and bitrate. Use the bitrate recommendation for your specific resolution, frame rate, and codec in the table above. Do not apply an H.264 figure to an AV1 or H.265 stream.
- Set the encoder rate controls. Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed YouTube’s four-second maximum.
- Use a supported ingest protocol. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Check your encoder’s output settings and the protocol selected for the stream.
- Test before the event. Include audio and movement similar to the real stream. Run a speed test, start a test stream, and check stream health and any messages in Live Control Room before relying on the settings.
- Monitor while live. Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and messages during the event. If the stream is unstable, reduce the demand by lowering the bitrate, resolution, or frame rate until the encoder and connection can sustain it.
Test the full stream, not just the frame-rate setting
A speed-test result alone cannot confirm that a particular frame rate will remain stable throughout a live event. Test the actual encoder, codec, resolution, bitrate, audio, and representative movement together. YouTube specifically advises testing before starting a live stream and recommends choosing reliable quality based on the internet connection.
- Check motion-heavy moments, not only a static opening screen.
- Listen for audio problems as well as checking the picture.
- Confirm that the encoder is sending the intended resolution, frame rate, and bitrate.
- Review Live Control Room stream health and messages during the test and event.
Do not confuse live frame rate with upload frame rate
YouTube’s upload encoding guidance says to encode and upload a video at the frame rate at which it was recorded; it lists common upload rates of 24, 25, 30, 48, 50, and 60 fps. That advice concerns uploaded video files. For live ingestion, use the live encoder guidance, which supports up to 60 fps and gives live bitrate recommendations by resolution, frame rate, and codec. See YouTube’s upload encoding settings for the separate upload guidance.

Frame rate is separate from latency
Frame rate describes how many frames the encoder sends each second. Latency describes the delay between the live event and what viewers see. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering; changing latency is not a substitute for choosing a sustainable frame rate. For stream-management options, see Manage live stream settings.

| Symptom | What to check | Practical fix |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped frames or poor stream health | Whether the connection can sustain the selected bitrate, and whether the encoder is overloaded. | Run another test and lower bitrate, resolution, or frame rate until the stream is stable. Recheck with representative motion. |
| 60 fps will not remain stable | The bitrate target for the chosen resolution and codec; for example, YouTube recommends 17 Mbps for 1080p60 H.264 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60 AV1/H.265. | Confirm the codec-specific target and available upload capacity. If necessary, switch to 30 fps or lower the resolution rather than holding an unstable 60 fps setting. |
| Unexpected sharpness or motion differences | Whether the source itself was recorded at the selected rate and whether the encoder output is configured as intended. | Check the source and encoder settings together; do not treat upload-file frame-rate advice as live-ingestion instructions. |
| Viewers report buffering despite a stable encoder | The stream’s latency mode as well as encoder health. | Review YouTube’s latency setting separately; lower latency can increase playback buffering. |
