Garmin Venu 4 is the best Fitbit Air replacement if you want substantially longer endurance and a full smartwatch. Garmin rates it for up to 12 days in smartwatch mode, with multi-band GPS, ECG, Garmin Pay, stored music, phone-linked calls and texts, and detailed training tools. Choose Google Pixel Watch 4 instead if an Android app ecosystem, touchscreen, LTE, and live on-wrist data matter more than charging frequency. iPhone owners who want a premium, rugged watch should consider Apple Watch Ultra 3, although its battery modes still require far more frequent charging than Garmin’s quoted smartwatch-mode figure.

All battery numbers below are manufacturer maximums or stated test results, not guarantees. GPS, LTE, an always-on display, music playback, frequent notifications, and continuous health measurements can reduce real-world runtime. Regional availability also affects ECG, Pulse Ox, cellular service, and some payment features.

Fitbit Air versus a full smartwatch: what changes?

Fitbit Air is a small, screenless tracker rather than a conventional watch. Google describes it as its smallest tracker, using a discreet pebble-shaped design and high-fidelity sensors for continuous wellness measurements. It records 24/7 heart rate, heart-rhythm monitoring with atrial-fibrillation (Afib) alerts, blood oxygen saturation (SpO2), resting heart rate, heart-rate variability, sleep stages, and sleep duration.

Google says, “With up to a week of battery life, Fitbit Air keeps up with your busiest schedule.” The company also says a five-minute charge can provide a full day of power. Those are approximate manufacturer figures from 2025 pre-production testing with default settings; your result will vary with use, temperature, phone connection, and sensor activity.

#1 Best Overall
Garmin Venu® 4, Advanced Fitness Smartwatch, 41mm, Bone Silicone | 24/7 Health Monitoring, Advanced Sleep Tracking, Health Status, 80+ Preloaded Sports Apps, Built-In Flashlight
  • Smaller-sized smartwatch with a bright, colorful display, stainless steel design, and built-in flashlight; up to 10 days of battery life gives a more complete picture of your health
  • Make improvements to promote a healthier lifestyle and know your body better with extensive health monitoring features, including wrist-based heart rate, Body Battery energy monitoring, fitness age, stress tracking, meditation and more (device data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)
  • Get a sleep score and personalized sleep coaching, including recommendations for how much sleep you need, tips on how to improve, alignment on your inner sleep cycle by using circadian rhythm and more; breathing variations feature uses Pulse Ox to check your level of variations while sleeping (this is not a medical device, and device data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked; Pulse Ox is required and not available in all countries)
  • The health status feature looks for changes in your health data that could indicate added stress to your body for key metrics such as heart rate, HRV, skin temperature and more, which could be related to factors such as physical activity, potential illness or other health changes (device data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)
  • Log custom or preset daily behaviors — such as caffeine and alcohol intake — and view reports in the Garmin Connect smartphone app on how lifestyle choices may impact your sleep, stress and HRV to help you make more health-conscious decisions (device data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)

The trade-off for that small size and endurance is that Air has no display, onboard GPS, app store, cellular modem, contactless-payment interface, or music storage. It depends on a paired phone and the Google Health app for setup, synchronization, history, and most interactions. It works with most phones running Android 11 or later or iOS 16.4 or later, and it requires a Google Account.

A replacement watch changes the experience in three important ways:

  • Information on your wrist: You can see workout pace, heart rate, notifications, maps, timers, and other data without taking out your phone.
  • Independent location and communication: Built-in GPS records routes away from the phone. LTE models can handle selected calls, messages, and data without a nearby handset.
  • More charging decisions: A screen, GPS receiver, processor, speaker, LTE radio, and richer sensors consume more power than a screenless tracker, so endurance depends heavily on which features you use.

If you mainly want passive sleep and heart-rate tracking, Air remains simpler and less intrusive. If you want apps, navigation, payments, music, or serious training metrics, one of the watches below is the more capable replacement.

Garmin Venu 4: the battery-first upgrade

Battery modes and charging expectations

Garmin lists Venu 4 for up to 12 days in smartwatch mode. Its Battery Saver smartwatch mode is rated for up to 25 days. For satellite activities, Garmin quotes up to 20 hours in GPS-Only GNSS mode and up to 17 hours with all-systems GNSS and multi-band enabled.

These modes are not interchangeable promises. The 12-day figure assumes ordinary smartwatch operation, while GPS tracking, multi-band reception, an always-on display, frequent notifications, music, and optical sensors shorten the interval. Battery Saver extends endurance by reducing functions and responsiveness. A runner recording a multi-hour event should use the GPS figure rather than the smartwatch figure when planning recharges.

Compared with Air’s quoted week, Venu 4 can add several days between ordinary charges. It is still sensible to charge before a long trip, a multi-day GPS activity, or a night when sleep data is important. Battery percentages, charging time, and remaining-day estimates are displayed on the watch so you can adjust settings before leaving a charger behind.

Features that make it a true smartwatch

  • Multi-band GPS: Uses multiple satellite signals to improve positioning in difficult environments such as dense urban streets or tree cover. You can select GPS-Only when conserving power matters more than maximum tracking robustness.
  • ECG: The ECG app can record a single-lead electrocardiogram where Garmin has enabled it and local regulations permit it. Availability is region-dependent; it is not a universal feature in every market.
  • Payments: Garmin Pay allows supported cards to be used at compatible contactless terminals. Bank, card-network, and country support must be checked before purchase.
  • Music: Venu 4 can store music, allowing compatible headphones to be used during a workout without carrying a phone. Streaming-service support and offline-download requirements differ by service.
  • Calls and texts: The watch can handle calls and texts through a paired compatible smartphone. This is phone-linked communication, not a blanket promise of standalone cellular service.
  • Training analysis: Sleep score and insights, training readiness, and training status turn activity and recovery data into planning guidance rather than just step totals.

Who should choose Venu 4

Choose it if your first buying criterion is fewer charging interruptions, but you still want a visible watch, independent GPS, payments, music, and serious training analysis. It suits Android users and mixed-phone households because it is not tied exclusively to one handset maker.

It is less suitable if you specifically need a large catalog of phone-style apps, a cellular plan for leaving the phone at home, or the tightest possible integration with an iPhone or Android operating system. Its health features also need regional verification: ECG and Pulse Ox are not guaranteed in every country.

Google Pixel Watch 4: the fullest Android smartwatch experience

What you gain over Fitbit Air

Pixel Watch 4 provides the features most people mean by “advanced smartwatch”: a touchscreen display, Wear OS 6, third-party applications, dual-band GPS, and an LTE option. You can view live workout metrics, respond to notifications, install apps, and use watch functions without relying on a screenless tracker.

Dual-band GPS is designed to improve location accuracy in challenging surroundings. The LTE version can provide cellular connectivity when your carrier, plan, country, and watch model support it. Confirm whether your carrier offers a compatible wearable plan; an LTE-capable watch without service still behaves largely like a Bluetooth-connected model when away from the phone.

Battery trade-off

Pixel Watch 4 is larger and has a shorter battery life than Fitbit Air’s quoted week. A bright display, active GPS, LTE, streaming audio, and frequent app use all increase charging frequency. The attraction is not maximum endurance; it is the ability to see and act on information immediately.

Android Central reported a $99 Fitbit Air price and a $350 Pixel Watch 4 price in its comparison article. Those were the prices available when that article was published, not a permanent price list. Promotions, storage or LTE variants, taxes, and regional currency can change the gap, so verify the exact configuration before checkout.

Who should choose Pixel Watch 4

  • Choose it if you want a bright display for live pace, heart rate, maps, timers, and notifications.
  • Choose it if installing third-party apps is more important than charging every few days.
  • Choose the LTE configuration only when standalone connectivity justifies both the higher device cost and recurring carrier fee.
  • Keep Fitbit Air instead if you value a discreet, screenless device for sleep and passive tracking and rarely need on-wrist interaction.

Apple Watch Ultra 3: the premium iPhone route

Battery evidence and practical meaning

Apple documents 42 hours in its multi-day battery testing and 72 hours in Low Power Mode testing for Apple Watch Ultra 3. Those results come from Apple’s stated test scenarios and vary with configuration, network conditions, usage, and battery age. Low Power Mode reduces or delays selected functions, so its 72-hour figure should not be read as normal full-featured endurance.

Even the longer Apple test scenario represents a different charging routine from Venu 4’s quoted 12 days in smartwatch mode. If you track a long GPS workout, use cellular service, stream music, or keep the display active, plan additional charging time.

Why iPhone owners may still prefer it

Ultra 3 combines a large, rugged premium watch design with a deep watchOS app ecosystem, health features, safety tools, GPS, and an optional cellular configuration. It is a logical upgrade for someone already committed to an iPhone who wants a high-end outdoor-capable watch and accepts more frequent charging.

Apple Watch requires an iPhone. Confirm the exact iPhone model, operating-system requirement, watch size, and regional cellular bands before buying. An Android phone cannot be used as the normal setup and companion device for Apple Watch.

Who should choose Ultra 3

Choose it when iPhone integration, premium construction, and watchOS applications outweigh endurance per dollar. It is not the strongest choice if your central goal is to charge as rarely as possible, and it is not a cross-platform option for an Android household.

How the alternatives compare on the decisions that matter

Battery life and charging frequency

Venu 4 leads on the published maximums: 12 days in smartwatch mode and up to 25 days with Battery Saver. Air’s maximum is approximately one week. Pixel Watch 4 is shorter than Air, while Ultra 3’s documented scenarios are measured in hours rather than days of ordinary full-power use. Treat all of these as starting points for planning, not guarantees; displays, GPS, LTE, music, and health sensors are the main variables.

Phone compatibility and lock-in

Need Most suitable choice Important limitation
Android and iPhone flexibility Garmin Venu 4 Calls and texts require a paired compatible smartphone; some health and payment functions are regional.
Android apps and Google-oriented smartwatch use Pixel Watch 4 Confirm Android version, LTE carrier support, and regional availability.
Deep iPhone integration Apple Watch Ultra 3 Requires an iPhone and cannot serve as a normal Android companion.

GPS: phone-assisted versus on-watch

Fitbit Air is phone-dependent and does not provide the on-watch GPS experience described for the alternatives. Venu 4 offers GPS-Only and all-systems multi-band modes. Pixel Watch 4 provides dual-band GPS. Ultra 3 includes GPS as part of its outdoor-watch feature set. If you run, cycle, hike, or walk without your phone, built-in GPS is one of the clearest reasons to move from Air to a watch.

Display, notifications, apps, payments, and music

Air deliberately omits a screen and interactive smartwatch platform. Venu 4 adds a display, Garmin Pay, stored music, and phone-linked communication. Pixel Watch 4 offers the broadest conventional Android smartwatch experience through Wear OS 6, third-party apps, touchscreen interaction, and optional LTE. Ultra 3 provides the watchOS app ecosystem, Apple-oriented notifications and services, and optional cellular hardware. Payment acceptance and music-service support depend on country, bank, service, and account.

Health, sleep, and training depth

Air covers the core wellness signals many people want: continuous heart rate, Afib alerts, SpO2, resting heart rate, heart-rate variability, and sleep stages and duration. Venu 4 adds ECG where enabled, sleep score and insights, training readiness, and training status, making it the strongest documented option here for structured training decisions. Pixel Watch 4 and Ultra 3 provide broader smartwatch health ecosystems, but the exact sensors, software functions, and regional permissions vary by model and market. Do not treat any consumer wearable’s alert as a medical diagnosis.

Size and overnight comfort

Air’s screenless pebble is designed to be discreet and light enough for continuous wear. Every alternative is a larger wristwatch with a display, buttons or crown, and a heavier hardware package. Measure your wrist, check the case and band dimensions for the exact variant, and consider whether you can sleep comfortably with the watch on. A theoretically longer battery is not useful if you remove the device every night and lose sleep data.

Choosing the right model: a decision path

  1. Start with your phone. If you use an iPhone, shortlist Venu 4 or Ultra 3 and remove Pixel Watch 4 unless its compatibility requirements explicitly match your setup. If you use Android, Pixel Watch 4 and Venu 4 are the natural starting points; Ultra 3 is not a normal Android option.
  2. Set your charging limit. If charging more than once a week is unacceptable, Venu 4 is the only listed option with a published 12-day smartwatch-mode claim. If charging every day or two is acceptable in exchange for richer apps and a display, Pixel Watch 4 or Ultra 3 can make sense.
  3. Decide whether you leave your phone behind. For phone-free route recording, choose a watch with onboard GPS. For calls and messages away from the phone, verify LTE service rather than assuming that Bluetooth connectivity provides it.
  4. Choose your interaction level. Keep Air for glance-free, passive tracking. Choose Venu 4 for a balanced watch with long endurance. Choose Pixel Watch 4 for app-heavy Android use. Choose Ultra 3 for a premium iPhone-centered experience.
  5. Check regional functions before paying. Verify ECG, Pulse Ox, Garmin Pay or Apple Pay support, LTE bands, carrier activation, and local emergency features for your country and exact model.
  6. Budget for the complete system. Include replacement bands, a spare charging cable, a compatible phone if yours is too old, LTE service, and any optional app or music subscriptions. The watch price alone does not represent the ongoing cost.

Setup and battery practices after you switch

First-day setup checklist

  1. Install the watch maker’s current companion app and sign in with the account required by that platform.
  2. Allow Bluetooth pairing, notification access, location permission, and health permissions only after reviewing what each permission enables.
  3. Update the watch firmware and companion app before judging battery life; early updates can change power behavior and add regional features.
  4. Enter your wrist, age, activity, sleep, and emergency details accurately. Incorrect profile data can distort calorie, training, and recovery estimates.
  5. Configure a charging routine that protects sleep tracking. For a long-battery device, a short charge while showering or getting ready may be enough; for a shorter-battery watch, identify a consistent daily charging window.

Settings that usually extend endurance

  • Disable an always-on display if you do not need it.
  • Use standard GPS rather than multi-band when the environment is open and maximum accuracy is unnecessary.
  • Turn off LTE when the phone is nearby, or use airplane mode during activities that do not need communication.
  • Download music over Wi-Fi before a workout instead of streaming through a cellular connection.
  • Reduce unnecessary notifications and haptic intensity.
  • Use Battery Saver for travel days when time between outlets matters more than continuous sensor and display features.
  • Keep the watch and phone software current, because connectivity bugs can create abnormal drain.

How to diagnose unexpectedly short battery life

  1. Record the battery percentage at bedtime and again after a normal night. A single unusual night is not enough to establish a pattern.
  2. Check whether GPS, LTE, music playback, an always-on display, or a firmware update was active.
  3. Temporarily disable one high-drain feature at a time for a full day so you can identify the cause rather than changing everything at once.
  4. Confirm that the charging contacts and cable are clean and that the watch reaches a full charge.
  5. If drain remains severe after updates and a controlled test, back up your data and contact the manufacturer’s support service; a failing battery or hardware fault cannot be fixed by a settings change.

Subscription, accessory, and ownership considerations

Air’s basic hardware requirements include a compatible phone, a Google Account, and the Google Health app. A full smartwatch may introduce additional costs: an LTE plan, proprietary charging cable, replacement bands, paid music or navigation services, or optional health-service subscriptions. The availability and price of each item depend on country and provider.

Do not assume that moving from Air to a watch transfers every historical metric or keeps every feature free. Export or review your existing health data before changing platforms, then check which records the new app can import. If you prefer Air’s sleep comfort but want a watch for daytime GPS and notifications, wearing both devices is possible; plan which device is the authoritative source for workouts and sleep to avoid duplicate or conflicting records.

Bottom line: which Fitbit Air alternative should you buy?

Buy Garmin Venu 4 when longer battery life and advanced smartwatch functions are equally important. Its published 12-day smartwatch-mode claim, 25-day Battery Saver mode, multi-band GPS, ECG option, payments, music, and training analysis make it the clearest all-around replacement for a screenless tracker.

Buy Google Pixel Watch 4 when you use Android and value a touchscreen, Wear OS 6 apps, dual-band GPS, live workout data, or LTE more than charging simplicity. Buy Apple Watch Ultra 3 when you use an iPhone and want Apple’s premium rugged watch experience, accepting its shorter tested battery scenarios and ecosystem lock-in.
