How the options compare
| Browser | Customization | Documented privacy and disclosures | Persistence and compatibility | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Firefox | Toolbar rearrangement, settings, add-ons and themes; advanced users can also try about:config and userChrome.css/userContent.css, which Mozilla does not officially support. Mozilla’s advanced customization guidance | Includes protections against known third-party trackers, social media trackers, cryptominers, cookies and fingerprinting technologies. Mozilla’s privacy notice describes technical and settings data processing, search suggestions and update checks. Firefox Privacy Notice | Advanced customizations can cause unexpected behavior, break the browser or be affected by updates. The cited documentation does not specify a special session-discard default. | Readers who want broad control in a familiar mainstream browser and are willing to manage advanced changes carefully. |
| Waterfox | Configurable Gecko-based alternative; extensions add flexibility. | Waterfox says new profiles use DNS over Oblivious HTTP by default and include ad and tracker blocking with bundled filter lists. Lists can become outdated; extensions are not required to be signed, and their own policies govern their data practices. Waterfox Privacy Policy Waterfox support documentation | Extensions can introduce their own data-access and trust considerations. The cited material does not establish a session-discard default or comparative compatibility results. | Readers seeking built-in blocking and a configurable Gecko option who will check extension permissions and policies. |
| Mullvad Browser | Designed around privacy protections rather than broad personal tailoring. | Developed by Mullvad with the Tor Project to minimize tracking and fingerprinting. Mullvad Browser overview Its hard-facts documentation describes privacy settings and their trade-offs. Hard facts: settings and modifications | Private browsing is the default; cookies and browsing data are discarded at session end. Stronger security settings can disable site features and break functionality. | Readers who prioritize reducing tracking and fingerprinting over persistent logins and frictionless compatibility. |
| Floorp | Officially presented as customization-focused. Floorp Browser | The cited official page does not establish detailed privacy defaults, update practices or independent comparative results. | The cited material does not establish session behavior or compatibility trade-offs. | Readers interested in customization who are prepared to inspect current privacy documentation and settings before choosing it for privacy. |
What “privacy-focused” does—and does not—tell you
A browser can block some trackers without processing no data at all. Privacy protections concern what the browser prevents websites and third parties from doing; a vendor’s privacy notice concerns the data the browser or its services may process. For Firefox, Mozilla’s notice, effective May 4, 2026, describes technical and settings data, search suggestions and update checks. Review the notice and relevant settings for your own use rather than treating tracker blocking as proof that no data reaches Mozilla. Mozilla’s Firefox Privacy Notice
Waterfox’s documented defaults—DNS over Oblivious HTTP for new profiles and built-in blocking—are specific protections, not a guarantee that every tracker is blocked indefinitely. Its policy warns that filter lists can become outdated. Add-ons are another separate trust decision: Waterfox says extensions are not required to be signed, and each extension’s own policy and behavior determine how it accesses data. Check permissions and the extension publisher’s practices before installing.
Mullvad Browser’s session-oriented defaults are a deliberate privacy trade-off: cookies and browsing data are discarded at the end of a session, which can mean signing in again. Its stronger security settings may disable site features, so a page or media feature that does not work may reflect a protection setting rather than a general browser fault. The browser is not, by itself, a guarantee of anonymity.

How to choose for your own use
Choose Firefox for control with a mainstream starting point
Firefox offers customization at several levels: move toolbar items, change settings, add extensions or themes, and—if you accept more maintenance—use advanced preferences or CSS. Mozilla warns that about:config and userChrome.css/userContent.css are unsupported customization methods: changes may produce unexpected behavior, break the browser or be affected by updates. Keep a record of changes and make them reversible so troubleshooting does not depend on guessing which preference caused a problem. Mozilla’s advanced customization guidance
Choose Waterfox if its built-in defaults fit your needs
Waterfox is a reasonable candidate if you want a configurable Gecko-based browser whose documentation describes built-in ad and tracker blocking and DNS over Oblivious HTTP on new profiles. Consider both the upkeep of its filter lists and the added trust decisions that come with extensions before relying on it for a particular privacy need. Waterfox’s policy

Choose Mullvad Browser for a more session-oriented approach
If minimizing tracking and fingerprinting outweighs staying logged in or avoiding site friction, Mullvad Browser’s private-session defaults may suit you better. Its documentation also explains that stronger security settings can break some functionality, so it is a trade-off rather than a universal replacement for a general-purpose browser. Keep the comparison grounded in your priorities
There is no evidence here for an objective overall winner or a speed ranking. Compare the details that affect your actual browsing:
- Customization: distinguish built-in controls and extensions from advanced options that may be unsupported.
- Privacy and disclosure: look at tracker and fingerprinting protections alongside vendor data processing, search connections and update checks.
- Compatibility: consider whether stronger defenses or unusual defaults interfere with sites, media or logins.
- Session persistence: decide whether cookies and account sessions should survive closing the browser.
- Extensions: review each add-on’s permissions and data practices, as well as how it is sourced.
- Maintenance: weigh the update path and effort required to keep custom settings and filter lists useful.
Defaults and policies can change. Check the current product documentation and privacy notice before installing or relying on a particular setting; a feature described for a new profile or a policy accessed on October 4, 2026, should not be assumed to describe every existing setup indefinitely.

Does a VPN change the browser choice?
Mullvad says its browser can be used with or without Mullvad VPN. A VPN can mask your IP address; it does not by itself defeat browser fingerprinting. The browser and a VPN address different tracking vectors, and neither alone should be treated as a complete privacy solution. Mullvad Browser overview
