There is no single best filament for every 3D-printed optical illusion. For effects that depend on light passing through the print, start with a translucent PETG or PLA product and tune its walls and infill. For shifting highlights and a reflective surface, choose silk PLA instead. The filament’s formulation, color, geometry, and print settings all affect the result; available sources do not establish a standardized head-to-head winner across material categories.
Choose by the optical effect you want

Why the same material label can look different
“PLA” or “PETG” alone does not predict an illusion’s appearance. A 2021 study measured different spectral behavior in two same-color PLA filaments from different producers and discusses processing, additives, and dyes as possible contributors. Its results concern the samples studied for diffuse-optics applications, not every retail spool or illusion print. Read the PLOS ONE study.
Think of the print as an optical system: material and pigment interact with wall thickness, infill, layer structure, and the shape of the model. A light-transmitting pattern may need thinner walls, while an even glow may benefit from more material to scatter and soften the light. A glossy surface can create a different illusion by reflecting highlights rather than transmitting light.
Set wall thickness for transmission or diffusion
For more light to pass through
Test fewer wall loops or thinner walls. Snapmaker says fewer wall loops increase transmission for its translucent PETG; Anycubic describes thinner walls as brighter for its translucent PLA and recommends one or two perimeters, lower infill, and printing at the high end of its product temperature range for higher clarity. These are vendor recommendations for their respective products, not universal settings for every spool or printer.

For a softer, more even glow
Try thicker walls or additional wall loops. Snapmaker and Anycubic both describe thicker construction as producing more diffusion. The trade-off is that a print designed to spread light may look less sharply transparent, which can be desirable for a glowing illusion.
Reduce unwanted haze when clarity matters
Bubbles and internal voids scatter light. Prusa’s transparent-object guide demonstrates dense rectilinear infill and a 0.05 mm layer height, and emphasizes calibration. Those are settings from a specific clarity-focused demonstration, not a universal profile and not necessarily appropriate for an intentionally diffused illusion. Do not use “clear” as a promise of glass-like results from FDM. Snapmaker explicitly cautions that FDM printing cannot achieve glass-like transparency, particularly for complex models. The manufacturer’s conditional “up to 90% light transmission” figure refers to its PETG Translucent product under optimized print settings; it is not an independent measurement or a general PETG specification.
Account for moisture and product-specific settings
For its PETG Translucent product, Snapmaker recommends drying at 65°C for six hours and says moisture can cause bubbling and reduce translucency. Follow the maker’s instructions for the spool you have rather than transferring this drying recommendation or other temperature, speed, and cooling settings to a different product. A dryer or dry box may help when moisture is the problem, but the guidance does not make one mandatory for every user.

A practical selection checklist
- Identify the mechanism: transmitted light, softened diffusion, or surface reflection.
- Match the material: consider translucent PETG for transmitted light when functional toughness matters, translucent PLA for colored or diffused effects, and silk PLA for gloss-driven highlights.
- Plan the geometry: decide how wall thickness and internal structure will shape the light before selecting slicer settings.
- Use the spool’s instructions: check its temperature, cooling, speed, and drying recommendations.
- Iterate with small samples: vary one factor, such as wall count, at a time so you can see how the chosen material and design respond.
