Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →For a typical SDR educational video, use real-time input pacing, H.264 video, AAC stereo audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval. Choose the video bitrate from YouTube’s recommendation for your actual output resolution and frame rate; there is no single best bitrate for every file. Test the whole loop—including audio and motion—before going live, then monitor YouTube’s stream health.
Recommended settings at a glance
| Setting | Practical baseline | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Ingest protocol | RTMPS when available | Use the exact ingest endpoint shown in YouTube Live Control Room and supported by your FFmpeg build. |
| Video codec | H.264 for a broadly compatible SDR workflow | YouTube also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1; choose those only if your installed FFmpeg build and ingest workflow support them. |
| Rate control | CBR | Set a bitrate matching YouTube’s row for the output resolution and frame rate. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four. Convert the interval to frames at your output frame rate. |
| Audio | AAC stereo, 44.1 kHz, 128 Kbps | This is YouTube’s recommended stereo baseline when the source and workflow permit. |
| Video format | Square pixels, progressive scan, Rec. 709 and 8-bit for SDR | YouTube’s advanced guidance also lists two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC. HDR guidance differs; do not apply it to an SDR file. |
| Input pacing | Read the file at real-time speed | Use FFmpeg’s real-time input pacing option for a file being sent as a live stream. |
YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and frame rates up to 60 fps for live encoding. H.264 plus AAC is a straightforward starting point for broad compatibility, not a guarantee that every FFmpeg build or file will work unchanged. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Choose a bitrate for your output
Match the outgoing resolution and frame rate to YouTube’s table, rather than choosing a bitrate just because it is common for a particular type of video. YouTube’s listed H.264 recommendations include:
| Output resolution and frame rate | Recommended ingest bitrate | Minimum ingest bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 480p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps | 0.4 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommended ingest settings, not measured results for your specific file. Consult the full current table for other combinations and codecs. The connection sending the stream needs stable upload capacity for the selected bitrate; test the actual connection and output beforehand. If the source already has a suitable frame rate, avoid needless frame-rate conversion.

Build an FFmpeg loop for YouTube Live
FFmpeg’s input loop option and real-time pacing can be used to repeat an applicable media file while sending it at live speed. The exact command depends on the container, streams, codecs, frame rate, and the installed FFmpeg build, so validate it with your file rather than treating any generic line as universal.
- Inspect the media. Confirm the file has the intended video and audio tracks, note their codecs and frame rate, and check whether there are multiple tracks that need explicit selection.
- Place input options before the input. FFmpeg input options, including looping options, belong before that input’s
-i. Use real-time pacing, such as-re, so the file is read at its native rate for streaming rather than sent as fast as the machine can process it. - Map the intended streams. If the container contains multiple video or audio tracks, map the tracks you intend to broadcast explicitly. Check the resulting output for missing audio, unexpected language tracks, or unintended video streams.
- Choose stream copy or encoding. Stream-copy video only when its codec, pixel format, frame rate, and keyframes are suitable for YouTube’s ingest requirements. Copying may reduce CPU load, but a file playing locally does not establish that its stream parameters are suitable. Re-encode when necessary.
- Set output rate control and keyframes. Use CBR behavior and the bitrate for the selected output profile. Set a two-second GOP, checking that the encoder honors the GOP and rate-control settings. At 30 fps, two seconds is 60 frames; at 25 fps, it is 50 frames. Do not set a GOP of two frames—that is not a two-second interval.
- Set audio and send to YouTube. Where compatible with the source and workflow, encode stereo audio as AAC at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. Send the output to the exact ingest URL and stream key displayed in YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the stream key as a private credential.
- Use the appropriate ingest endpoint. Prefer RTMPS when it is available in the control room and supported by your FFmpeg build. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encryption in transit to and through Google’s servers; do not substitute an endpoint based on guesswork.
For exact option syntax and behavior, consult the FFmpeg documentation and the documentation for the FFmpeg version installed on your system. Options and encoder availability can differ by build.

Validate the loop before relying on it
A stream can be accepted by YouTube and still have a bad loop boundary, missing audio, or unstable encoding. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream, monitoring stream health, and reviewing messages during the event.
- Watch at least one full repeat. Listen for silence, clicks, abrupt cuts, or an audio/video discontinuity at the boundary.
- Confirm the intended audio and video tracks are present and remain synchronized.
- Check that FFmpeg can encode or copy the output in real time without overloading available CPU or GPU resources.
- Check that the outgoing bitrate stays within the connection’s stable upload capacity and that YouTube reports a healthy incoming stream.
- For continuous operation, assess recovery from interruptions separately. A short successful test does not prove that the stream will recover from every failure.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive a stream | Incorrect endpoint or stream key, unsupported protocol, or an FFmpeg build without the needed support | Copy the current ingest details from YouTube Live Control Room, keep the key private, and verify RTMPS support in the installed build. |
| Stream health reports problems or the stream drops | Unstable upload capacity, an output bitrate the connection cannot sustain, or server-side/network interruption | Check the actual outgoing bitrate and connection stability; try a lower supported output profile if necessary. Recovery is not assured for every interruption. |
| Audio is absent or wrong | Incorrect stream mapping, an unexpected source track, or an incompatible audio path | Inspect the file’s streams, map the intended audio track explicitly, and test the AAC output before the event. |
| Audio or video jumps at the repeat point | Duration or timestamp discontinuity, or a boundary in the media that is not seamless | Review the loop boundary in a real-time test. Adjust or prepare the source if the boundary itself is abrupt; looping cannot make an edited discontinuity seamless. |
| Encoding falls behind or consumes excessive resources | Re-encoding load, resolution or frame rate, motion complexity, or an unsuitable encoder configuration | Use stream copy only if the video is genuinely compatible; otherwise select an encoding approach the available CPU/GPU can sustain in real time. |
| Keyframe interval is rejected or unsuitable | GOP was set in frames as though it were seconds, or the encoder did not honor the intended option | Translate two seconds to frames at the output frame rate and verify encoder behavior; do not confuse a two-frame GOP with two seconds. |
