The best fertilizer for gerbera daisies is a complete controlled-release fertilizer or a complete liquid fertilizer that includes iron and manganese. Choose one approach, follow its label and a regional extension schedule, and check growing-medium pH if leaves yellow: fertilizer alone cannot correct every nutrient problem or guarantee more flowers.

Which fertilizer should you use for gerbera daisies?

Choose a complete fertilizer rather than a product selected only for its phosphorus or bloom claims. Look for iron and manganese in the nutrient analysis, since gerberas can develop deficiencies in these micronutrients, particularly in potting soil. The University of Florida IFAS recommends looking for a fertilizer or foliar spray containing them (UF/IFAS Gerbera Daisy).

There is no consumer-brand winner established by comparative trials in the available guidance. A suitable choice depends on whether you prefer fewer seasonal applications or repeated liquid feeding, as well as the product label and your local growing conditions.

Controlled-release fertilizer: a seasonal option

UF/IFAS and Clemson Extension both recommend applying controlled-release fertilizer two or three times during the growing season. Use the rate and method on the product label; these extension schedules do not establish one dose that fits every formulation or plant.

Complete liquid fertilizer: a repeated-feed option

Extension recommendations differ on frequency. UF/IFAS advises a complete fertilizer monthly, while Clemson Extension recommends liquid fertilizer every two weeks. These are separate regional schedules, not instructions to combine or alternate. Follow the product label and local extension guidance rather than treating either interval as universal.

How often should you fertilize gerbera daisies?

Fertilizer approach Extension guidance How to apply the guidance
Controlled-release Two or three times during the growing season (UF/IFAS and Clemson Extension) Follow the specific product label for amount and placement.
Complete fertilizer, including liquid options Monthly (UF/IFAS) Use this as UF/IFAS home-gardening guidance; check the label and local advice.
Liquid fertilizer Every two weeks (Clemson Extension) This is Clemson’s separate schedule, not an added feeding on top of UF/IFAS monthly guidance.

Container mix, climate, irrigation, and fertilizer formulation can all affect what is appropriate. Commercial greenhouse nitrogen rates are not a substitute for a home-garden product label: an eight-week USDA Agricultural Research Service study compared constant liquid rates of 50, 75, 100, 200, 300, and 400 mg/L nitrogen in potted gerberas, and found that optimal tissue concentrations were narrower than earlier published ranges and varied over the crop cycle (USDA ARS publication record, 2009). Those experimental treatments do not establish a universal home dose.

Why are gerbera daisy leaves turning yellow?

Yellowing can be associated with reduced iron uptake, but it is not enough by itself to diagnose iron deficiency. Growing-medium pH influences nutrient availability, so check it before adding a corrective product. In greenhouse guidance, UMass Extension gives an optimum gerbera substrate pH of 5.8–6.2. Above 6.2, reduced iron uptake can cause interveinal chlorosis on upper leaves; below 5.8, excessive iron and manganese uptake can produce purplish lower leaves and black spots (UMass Extension, March 31, 2025).

That range is greenhouse substrate guidance, not a universal measurement for every garden bed. A Wisconsin home-growing article reports a broader pH range of 5.5–6.5, underscoring that advice varies by source and setting (University of Wisconsin–Madison Extension, 2013). For a container plant with persistent symptoms, test the mix and use local extension advice to interpret the result.

When iron chelate may help

UMass Extension says regular substrate pH testing can help determine whether symptoms are due to low iron uptake. If iron deficiency is diagnosed, it identifies iron chelate as a corrective option; it is not a routine bloom booster or a substitute for addressing the underlying pH issue (UMass Extension, April 17, 2026).

What else supports continued flowering?

Fertilizer is only one part of gerbera care. Clemson Extension advises watering early enough that foliage dries before night and removing spent flowers (deadheading) to encourage further flowering (Clemson Extension Gerbera Daisy). If a plant is not blooming well, avoid assuming that more fertilizer is the answer; first keep feeding within the label directions and attend to routine care.
