Choose the substitute according to the job burlap was doing. For a comfortable dress with movement, use lightweight or mid-weight linen. For a firm, durable silhouette, choose lightweight cotton canvas or duck. For an inexpensive plain-weave stand-in or a toile, use unbleached muslin or calico. If the rustic surface matters most, coarse linen, hemp muslin or an open cotton can provide the look, but line or back any rough fabric that will touch skin.

Burlap, also called hessian, is a coarse, open plain weave usually made from jute. Utility grades can shed fibers, feel abrasive and fray quickly, so they are usually better for trims, props, bags or lined costume panels than for an unlined dress. The alternatives below let you keep the desired texture, structure or natural appearance without accepting every problem of utility burlap.

Start with the result you need

There is no single fabric that behaves exactly like burlap in a dress. Burlap combines an open weave, rough texture and firm body, while a wearable substitute normally improves at least one of those qualities. Decide whether the original fabric was meant to provide airflow, a rustic surface, a stable seam or a sculptural shape.

  • Relaxed, breathable dress: lightweight or mid-weight linen.
  • Structured skirt, apron, chore dress or hat: lightweight cotton canvas or duck.
  • Cheap test garment or plain natural look: unbleached muslin or calico.
  • Visible rustic texture: coarse linen, hemp muslin or open cotton, with lining or backing where needed.
  • Utility feel with more flexibility: cotton twill.
  • Soft, drapey natural-look garment: a linen-viscose blend.

Check the actual fabric rather than relying on a fiber name alone. Two linens, canvases or muslins can have very different weights, densities and finishes.

Why ordinary burlap is difficult to wear

Burlap is generally a plain weave made from jute with a loose, coarse surface. The open structure gives it a recognizable rustic appearance, but also creates practical problems in clothing.

  • Loose fibers can shed onto skin and undergarments.
  • The surface may scratch at the neckline, armholes, waist and other friction points.
  • Open edges unravel readily unless they are secured.
  • Utility grades may be too stiff in some areas and too unstable in others.
  • Open sections can be translucent and may require a lining or backing.

That does not make burlap unusable. It can work for a lined panel, detachable overskirt, costume detail, bag or prop. For a close-fitting or unlined dress, however, a substitute usually produces a better result with less skin irritation and easier seam finishing.

Substitutes compared

Substitute Drape and silhouette Stability and seams Comfort and airflow Texture and shedding Main cautions Best uses
Lightweight or mid-weight linen Crisp to fluid; relaxed movement Stable enough for ordinary garment seams; edges can fray Breathable and suitable for warm-weather wear Natural texture without utility burlap’s harshness Wrinkles readily; weight and finish vary Dresses, shirts, skirts and trousers
Lightweight cotton canvas or duck Firm body and a structured outline Durable, stable plain weave Less airy than linen; heavy grades can feel warm Smooth to moderately textured; usually less open than burlap Heavy grades are stiff and difficult to ease around curves Structured skirts, aprons, chore garments, bags and hats
Coarse linen or hemp muslin Ranges from moderately relaxed to lightly structured May need backing for consistent support More wearable than utility burlap, depending on openness Irregular, rustic natural texture Open surfaces may need lining, backing or edge control Rustic costume panels, overskirts and texture-led designs
Unbleached muslin or calico Usually softer and less sculptural than burlap Plain weave; convenient for testing fit Fine grades can be comfortable and breathable Plain, natural appearance rather than coarse burlap texture Usually less rugged than burlap Toiles, test garments and light natural garments
Cotton twill Some drape while retaining useful body Durable diagonal weave with dependable seam support Generally more flexible than equivalent canvas Subtle diagonal texture, not an open burlap look Cannot reproduce burlap’s loose texture Utility garments that need both durability and movement
Linen-viscose blend Softer and drapier than many pure linens Behavior depends on the blend and finish Often comfortable, but verify the actual cloth Retains some linen character with a softer fall Blend behavior varies; test before cutting Soft dresses and other natural-look garments

Lightweight or mid-weight linen: the most versatile dress substitute

Linen is the strongest general choice when the garment needs airflow and relaxed movement rather than a rigid silhouette. It can range from crisp to fluid, so select a weight that resembles the intended pattern. A lightweight linen can make a loose summer dress; a mid-weight version gives more presence to a skirt or simple jacket without the stiffness of heavy canvas.

What linen does well

  • It is breathable and comfortable for garments worn close to the body.
  • Its natural irregularity preserves a handmade, rustic impression without the abrasive surface of utility burlap.
  • It works for shirts, dresses, skirts and trousers.
  • It can provide either a cleaner outline or a softer fall, depending on weight and finish.

What to plan for

Linen wrinkles readily, and its cut edges can fray. Use a seam finish that encloses or secures the edge, especially inside armholes, waist seams and other high-friction areas. Prewash according to the fiber and supplier instructions before fitting the garment; otherwise later washing can change the dimensions. Because linen labels cover a wide range of cloths, compare the actual swatch’s opacity, weight and drape rather than assuming every linen will behave alike.

Lightweight cotton canvas or duck: when structure matters

Canvas and duck are durable, stable plain weaves that support a firm silhouette. They are useful when the burlap was chosen to make a skirt stand away from the body, reinforce a chore garment or create a substantial apron, bag or hat. A lightweight grade is more appropriate for a dress than a heavy utility canvas.

Best applications

  • Structured skirts and pinafores
  • Aprons and chore-style garments
  • Costume pieces that need a defined outline
  • Bags, hats and other accessories

Limits of canvas

Heavy canvas can feel stiff and warm. It is also hard to ease around curved seams, so a pattern with many princess seams, tight armscyes or sharply shaped panels may fight the fabric. Match the canvas weight to the pattern and make a test section before committing to the full garment. If the fabric resists a curve, choose a lighter grade or simplify the design rather than forcing the cloth into gathers and easing it cannot support.

Unbleached muslin or calico: the practical budget option

Muslin is a plain-weave cotton available in fine, soft, coarse and open versions. Unbleached muslin or calico is inexpensive and generally easy to source, making it useful when you need to test a pattern or create a simple natural-colored garment without buying expensive yardage.

Use it for a toile first

A toile is most useful when its weight and drape resemble the final fabric. A very light muslin may prove the measurements but fail to predict how a canvas skirt will stand or how a coarse linen will fall. Choose a muslin with comparable body, then assess the fit, hem shape, arm movement and seam placement before cutting the final substitute.

Know what it cannot imitate

Muslin is usually softer and less rugged than burlap. It will not reproduce an open, scratchy texture or a strongly structured silhouette unless you add a suitable backing or choose a firmer grade. Treat it as a plain-weave stand-in and testing material, not an exact visual copy.

Coarse linen, hemp muslin and open cotton for a rustic surface

When texture is the reason you wanted burlap, choose a cloth with visible irregularity rather than simply the stiffest fabric available. Coarse linen, hemp muslin and open cotton can create a natural, rustic surface while remaining more wearable than utility jute.

Control the open weave

Hold the swatch to a light source. If you can see substantial gaps or the fabric looks transparent, plan a lining, underdress or backing before cutting. Backing also reduces distortion at seams and helps prevent a rough surface from rubbing directly against skin.

Reserve texture for the right locations

A coarse overskirt, yoke, pocket, cuff or costume panel can deliver the visual effect without placing the roughest cloth at every contact point. Line necklines and armholes, and consider a smoother fabric for facings or waistbands. This lets the outside retain its rustic character while the inside remains comfortable.

Cotton twill: a middle ground between canvas and linen

Cotton twill has a durable diagonal weave and is generally more flexible than an equivalent canvas. It suits utility garments that need some drape, such as a work dress, overshirt or skirt with practical pockets. The diagonal surface gives visual interest, but it does not reproduce burlap’s open texture.

Choose twill when seam stability and durability matter more than a loose rustic appearance. It can be easier to move in than heavy canvas, while still supporting a cleaner outline than very soft muslin.

Linen-viscose blends: softer fall with linen character

A linen-viscose blend can retain some linen texture while giving a softer, drapier fall. It is useful for a dress where pure linen feels too crisp or where the design depends on fluid movement. Blend behavior varies, however, so do not infer the final drape from the fiber label alone. Test the exact fabric for crease recovery, opacity and seam behavior before cutting.

How to evaluate a substitute swatch

A swatch test reveals differences that a product description or fiber label cannot. Use the same fabric you intend to put into the garment, not a similar-looking sample from another roll.

  1. Confirm fiber content and actual weight. Two fabrics carrying the same fiber name can behave very differently. Record the supplier’s stated content and weight, if available.
  2. Check density and opacity. Hold the swatch to light. An open weave may need a lining or backing, particularly in a dress bodice or skirt.
  3. Test crease recovery. Crush one corner, release it and observe how strongly the crease remains. Then suspend the swatch from one corner and from two corners to compare fold depth with the pattern you plan to use.
  4. Check for shedding. Rub the surface over a dark cloth. Loose fibers are especially important with burlap-like open weaves and may indicate that exposed edges or skin-contact areas need protection.
  5. Test color transfer. Press or rub a damp white cloth against the swatch. If color transfers, wash and retest before combining it with a light lining or undergarment.
  6. Prewash appropriately. Follow the fiber and supplier instructions. Prewashing helps reveal dimensional change before the garment is fitted.
  7. Make a toile or test section. Use fabric with comparable weight and drape. Test a sleeve, neckline, curved seam or pocket area if those details are central to the design.

Prepare the pattern for the chosen fabric

For linen

Expect a relaxed silhouette and visible creasing. Keep enough wearing ease for movement, and inspect the hem and seam allowances for fraying during construction. If the pattern relies on crisp pleats or a rigid flare, choose a firmer linen or reinforce the relevant section rather than assuming lightweight linen will hold the shape.

For canvas or duck

Reduce unnecessary shaping where the fabric cannot ease smoothly. Large, uncomplicated panels are friendlier than many tight curves. Test pockets, facings and closures because added layers can become bulky quickly. A lightweight canvas usually gives a more wearable result than a heavy grade in a dress.

For muslin or calico

Use it to verify the pattern, but compare its body with the final cloth. If the final substitute is stiffer, a muslin toile may understate the finished volume; if the final cloth is drapier, the toile may make the garment appear more structured than it will be.

For coarse or open fabrics

Plan the lining or backing in the pattern stage. Include clean-finished facings, stabilized seam allowances and enough coverage at necklines, armholes and waist seams to prevent direct rubbing.

Seam finishing and comfort details

Fraying and surface irritation are the two issues most likely to turn a promising substitute into an uncomfortable garment.

  • Secure raw edges. Overcast or bind edges that fray. Do this early on open or coarse cloth so handling does not enlarge the weave.
  • Protect friction points. Line or flat-line necklines, armholes and other areas where the fabric rubs against skin.
  • Use a smoother inside layer. A lining can improve comfort, conceal an open weave and reduce shedding onto clothing.
  • Stabilize vulnerable sections. Backing can support a coarse panel and reduce stretching at seams.
  • Check the finished seam, not only the swatch. Layered seams, facings and closures can feel much thicker than a single fabric layer.

Common problems and fixes

The substitute looks right but scratches

Move the coarse fabric away from direct contact by adding a lining, underdress or flat backing. Keep rough cloth in outer panels and use a smoother fabric for facings and waist areas. If the surface still sheds after testing, reserve it for a detachable or decorative piece.

The dress stands too far away from the body

The fabric is probably too heavy or too stiff for the pattern. Try a lighter canvas, a softer twill or a mid-weight linen. Re-cutting the same design in a lighter grade is usually more effective than trying to force heavy canvas into a fluid shape.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The skirt collapses instead of holding a rustic shape

The cloth is softer than the intended burlap effect. Choose a firmer linen, lightweight canvas or duck, or add a suitable backing to the visible panel. Test the hem and waistband together because added support in only one area can create an uneven silhouette.

Edges unravel while sewing

Stop and secure the cut edges with an overcast or bound finish. Handle the piece less, avoid dragging it across the machine and check whether the weave is too open for the pattern. A lining or backing can also limit movement in a loose weave.

The color bleeds onto the lining

Use the damp-white-cloth test before assembly. Wash and retest according to the supplier’s instructions. Do not pair an untested dyed fabric with a pale lining or garment that will be washed together.

The toile gave the wrong fit impression

Compare the toile and final fabric’s weight and drape. A muslin that is much softer than canvas, or much lighter than coarse linen, can mislead you about volume, ease and hem behavior. Make a new test section from a closer match before cutting expensive yardage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cost, availability and buying decisions

Unbleached muslin and calico are generally the inexpensive, easy-to-source choices, which is why they are useful for tests and simple garments. Linen, canvas, duck, twill and blends can vary substantially by weight, weave density and finish. Compare the actual cloth rather than choosing solely by the lowest price or a broad label such as linen or canvas.

When shopping, describe the performance you need: lightweight canvas for a structured garment, linen dress fabric with relaxed drape, unbleached muslin for a toile or cotton twill for a durable but flexible utility piece. Request or buy a swatch whenever possible, and keep the swatch with the pattern notes after testing.

A quick decision checklist

  • Does the garment need airflow more than structure? Start with lightweight or mid-weight linen.
  • Does it need a firm outline and durable seams? Choose lightweight canvas or duck.
  • Are you testing fit or working to a tight budget? Use unbleached muslin or calico.
  • Is the rustic surface the visual priority? Try coarse linen, hemp muslin or open cotton, then line or back it.
  • Do you need utility durability with more movement than canvas? Consider cotton twill.
  • Do you want a softer, drapier natural look? Test a linen-viscose blend.
  • Is the fabric open, scratchy or prone to shedding? Plan lining, backing and enclosed seam finishes before cutting.
  • Have you tested opacity, crease recovery, shedding, color transfer and shrinkage? Do that before committing to all the yardage.

Bottom line for a burlap-replacement dress

For most wearable dresses, lightweight or mid-weight linen is the safest first choice because it combines breathability, natural texture and relaxed movement. Choose lightweight cotton canvas or duck when the design depends on body and durability, and use unbleached muslin or calico when the priority is an inexpensive test or plain-weave garment. For the strongest burlap-like appearance, use coarse linen, hemp muslin or open cotton selectively and protect the inside with lining or backing. The swatch—not the fiber name—should decide the final choice.
