For a nearby speaker, consider a compact directional mic that plugs into the phone. For a presenter who moves around, choose a wireless kit with a receiver that matches the iPhone’s port. If you already own a wired mic, check its cabling and use a compatible audio interface or adapter.
Choose a microphone setup for the way you record
| Recording situation | Setup to consider | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Talking to camera with the phone close by | Compact, phone-mounted directional microphone | Phone port, exact model suffix, mic direction, wind protection, and case clearance |
| Interview or presenter moving away from the phone | Wireless transmitter kit with a phone receiver | One or two transmitters, USB-C or Lightning fit, mounting, monitoring, and app limitations |
| Using a microphone you already own | Wired mic with the correct cable, adapter, or mobile audio interface | TRS versus TRRS, phone-port input adapter, monitoring output, and app compatibility |
| Recording two people | Two-transmitter wireless kit or two-input interface | Whether both voices are captured as intended and the app supports the desired channel arrangement |
| Moving between a phone and other cameras | Receiver-based wireless system or adaptable mic/interface | Included cables, phone adapter, camera output, mounting, and separately sold accessories |
These are setup categories, not a tested ranking. Confirm current recording modes and app behavior in the product manual before relying on a particular configuration.
For a speaker close to the phone: use a direct-mounted mic
A compact directional microphone mounted on the phone is a straightforward option when the speaker stays near the camera. Pointing the mic toward the speaker matters; this setup does not give the subject the same freedom to move away as a wireless transmitter. RØDE’s guide to connecting an external microphone to a smartphone distinguishes phone-mounted directional microphones from wireless systems suited to greater distance.
USB-C iPhones: RØDE VideoMic Me-C+
RØDE says the VideoMic Me-C+ is designed for USB-C iOS and Android devices, including iPhone 15. In its support answer updated December 5, 2025, RØDE states: “The VideoMic Me-C+ is made and designed to be fully compatible with iOS devices (as well as Android devices) with USB-C ports, such as the iPhone 15.” The original VideoMic Me-C is not compatible with iOS, according to the same RØDE compatibility article, so do not treat the similar model names as interchangeable.

- Powerful Noise Cancelling - 2 noise cancellation levels are available—Basic is ideal for quiet indoor settings, while Strong excels in noisy environments to give you clear vocals. [8]
Before recording, check that the mic clears your case and does not interfere with camera framing. Consider wind protection if you will record outdoors. The Lightning VideoMic Me-L is not natively compatible with iPhone 15 or 16; RØDE recommends the Me-C+ for those USB-C generations in its Me-L and iPhone 15/16 compatibility answer.
For presenters who move: choose a wireless kit
A wireless kit puts a transmitter on the speaker and connects a receiver to the phone. It is more suitable than a phone-mounted mic when the person speaking needs to move away from the camera. Match the receiver or phone adapter to the iPhone’s physical port, and choose the number of transmitters for the number of speakers.

DJI Mic 2: single- or two-person recording
DJI documents a one-transmitter/one-receiver set for a single creator and a two-transmitter/one-receiver kit for two-person recording. Its support page says its USB-C and Lightning phone adapters output digital signals. Kit contents vary, so check the exact bundle rather than assuming the adapter you need is included.
DJI lists 8 GB of internal transmitter storage and up to 14 hours of 24-bit or 11 hours of 32-bit audio. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results. DJI also lists maximum transmission distances of 250 m under FCC conditions and 160 m under CE conditions, both in unobstructed, interference-free environments; those figures are ideal-condition maximums, not a promise of typical working range. The system supports up to two transmitters at once. DJI says a direct Bluetooth connection to a phone disables intelligent noise cancelling and internal recording. See DJI’s Mic 2 support information for specifications and current connection details.

RØDE Wireless Micro: check receiver version and case fit
RØDE sells separate Wireless Micro receiver versions for USB-C devices and Lightning iOS devices, with the Lightning version intended for devices such as iPhone 14 and earlier. The receiver plugs into the phone’s charging port, but some thick or rugged cases can block the connection. RØDE also describes a Direct Connect option through its Capture app without plugging in the receiver; do not assume that this app-based path behaves the same in every video app. Check RØDE’s current Wireless Micro connection instructions.
For an existing wired mic: check the signal path and monitoring
A 3.5 mm microphone may need more than a plug adapter to work with an iPhone. Camera microphones commonly use TRS cabling, while smartphone microphone inputs may require TRRS wiring. Depending on the mic and iPhone, you may also need the correct Lightning or USB-C audio input adapter. RØDE’s smartphone connection guide explains these connection paths; do not assume a passive adapter will work with every microphone.

If you want to use two microphones or monitor sound with headphones, RØDE describes the AI-Micro as a two-input mobile interface with headphone output and USB connectivity for Lightning and USB-C devices. Monitoring lets you catch a muted or badly leveled signal before recording a long take. Adapter requirements can be model-specific: RØDE’s USB microphone compatibility guidance, for example, specifies MFi-certified cables for certain Lightning setups and a camera adapter for some models. Verify the exact mic, cable, iPhone, and app combination.

Check compatibility before you record
- Identify the iPhone port. Confirm whether the phone uses USB-C or Lightning; do not buy based on the iPhone name alone.
- Match the exact mic or receiver variant. Check model suffixes and the manufacturer’s compatibility guidance. Similar names do not guarantee iOS support.
- Confirm the connection path. For a receiver, check port fit and case clearance. For a wired mic, confirm TRS/TRRS needs and the right phone audio input adapter or interface.
- Check the recording app and mode. A manufacturer’s compatibility statement does not establish that an app-based connection works in every video app or that every channel arrangement is supported.
- Test the whole setup before an important take. Record a short clip, listen back, and verify that the intended microphones are active and that levels are usable.
