For most investors pairing a financial ETF with QQQ, Vanguard Financials ETF (VFH) is the best broad-sector starting point. It is designed to cover U.S. financial companies across large-, mid-, and small-cap stocks. Choose Financial Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLF) instead when you want a more focused, familiar large-cap financial sleeve. Choose KRE or KBE only when your objective is specifically bank exposure rather than the whole financial sector.

QQQ tracks the Nasdaq-100, an index of 100 of the largest non-financial companies listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market. A financial ETF therefore adds a sector that QQQ’s stated index universe excludes, but the right choice depends on whether you want broad diversification, large-cap financials, or a concentrated bank thesis.

Quick answer: which financial ETF fits beside QQQ?

Investor objective Most suitable candidate Why it fits Main trade-off
Broad exposure to U.S. financial companies VFH Tracks the MSCI US Investable Market Index/Financials 25/50 and spans large-, mid-, and small-cap financial businesses. Its wider universe can include more smaller companies and a less concentrated portfolio than a large-cap sector fund.
Focused, recognizable large-cap financial-sector exposure XLF Seeks to track the Financial Select Sector Index, covering banks, insurers, capital-markets firms, mortgage REITs, consumer finance and other financial services. It is narrower than a total-market financials fund and may not provide the same mid- and small-cap breadth as VFH.
Regional-bank exposure KRE The SPDR S&P Regional Banking ETF is a targeted regional-bank vehicle. Regional-bank performance can diverge sharply from insurers, asset managers, payment companies and other financial businesses.
Bank-only exposure without the broader financial sector KBE The SPDR S&P Bank ETF is another bank-focused alternative. It narrows the investment thesis to banks, so it is not a substitute for diversified financial-sector exposure.

The practical default is VFH when breadth is your priority, XLF when you prefer a concentrated large-cap sector allocation, and KRE or KBE only when you deliberately want banks to drive the result. Current holdings, fees, assets, yields and bid-ask spreads change, so confirm the latest issuer fact sheet and trading data before placing an order.

Why add a financial ETF to QQQ?

QQQ is an exchange-traded fund based on the Nasdaq-100 Index. Invesco describes it as a way to follow “100 of the largest non-financial companies listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market through a single ETF.” That construction gives QQQ a growth- and technology-heavy profile, while leaving financial companies outside the index’s stated universe.

A financial ETF can therefore serve as a complementary sleeve rather than a recreation of QQQ. The two funds are built from different index rules: QQQ starts with the largest eligible Nasdaq companies and excludes financials, while a financial ETF starts with financial-sector classifications and then applies its own size, weighting and eligibility rules.

“Complementary” does not mean guaranteed diversification in every market. Broad equity sell-offs, interest-rate changes, credit losses and changes in investor risk appetite can affect many sectors at once. The benefit is that the source of exposure is different, not that returns will always move in opposite directions.

Candidate 1: Vanguard Financials ETF (VFH)

What VFH holds by design

Vanguard says VFH seeks to track the MSCI US Investable Market Index (IMI)/Financials 25/50. The index approach covers a wide range of U.S. financial activities, including banking, mortgage finance, consumer finance, investment banking, brokerage, asset management, insurance and related businesses.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That breadth is the strongest reason to use VFH alongside QQQ. You are not making a single bet on banks; you are adding exposure across multiple financial subsectors and company sizes. Large-cap institutions can sit alongside mid- and small-cap firms, giving the fund a wider representation of the investable financial-company universe than a bank-only product.

Published cost

Vanguard lists a 0.09% expense ratio as of December 19, 2025. That is the dated figure available for this guide; expense ratios can change, so check the current fund page or prospectus before investing.

When VFH is the better pairing

  • You want the financial sector rather than a bank trade.
  • You value exposure across large-, mid- and small-cap companies.
  • You want insurers, asset managers, brokers, mortgage-finance companies and consumer-finance firms represented alongside banks.
  • You are willing to accept that a broader portfolio may behave differently from a concentrated large-cap sector fund.

Candidate 2: Financial Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLF)

What XLF is designed to cover

State Street says XLF seeks results that generally correspond to the price and yield performance of publicly traded equity securities in the Financial Select Sector Index. The index includes financial services, insurance, banks, capital markets, mortgage REITs and consumer finance.

XLF is the recognizable focused-sector choice for an investor who wants a single, large-cap-oriented financial sleeve. Its appeal is simplicity: one established sector fund can add financial exposure without intentionally targeting only regional banks or only deposit-taking institutions.

When XLF is the better pairing

  • You prefer a focused financial-sector allocation with a familiar large-company orientation.
  • You want several financial subsectors in one fund but do not need the broadest possible size coverage.
  • You are comfortable with the index’s inclusion of mortgage REITs and consumer-finance companies, not just traditional banks and insurers.

The available data does not establish a current XLF expense ratio, yield, assets-under-management figure or typical spread. Obtain those numbers from State Street’s latest materials and your trading venue rather than assuming they match an older comparison.

Candidate 3: SPDR S&P Regional Banking ETF (KRE)

What KRE adds

KRE is a regional-bank ETF. It is appropriate when your thesis is specifically about regional banking rather than the entire financial sector. That focus can make KRE’s results more sensitive to regional-bank earnings, deposit trends, commercial-real-estate exposure, funding costs, credit quality and regulatory developments than a diversified financials fund.

When KRE makes sense

  • You intentionally want regional banks to be the main source of additional exposure beside QQQ.
  • You understand that a regional-bank fund will not give you equivalent exposure to insurers, brokers, asset managers or diversified financial companies.
  • You are prepared for a narrower and potentially more volatile sector position than VFH or XLF.

KRE should not be presented as a general-purpose replacement for a financial-sector ETF. It is a targeted instrument for an investor who has already decided that regional banks are the desired risk.

Candidate 4: SPDR S&P Bank ETF (KBE)

What KBE adds

KBE is identified in the SPDR Q3 2025 reference guide as a bank-focused alternative. Like KRE, it narrows the exposure to banks instead of covering the full financial-services landscape.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

KBE versus a broad financials fund

The relevant decision is not simply whether KBE is “better” than VFH or XLF. It answers a different question. VFH and XLF are sector-allocation tools; KBE is a bank thesis. If your portfolio already has substantial bank exposure, KBE can increase concentration without adding missing financial subsectors. If your objective is to complement QQQ with financials generally, that narrowness is a disadvantage.

How to choose between VFH, XLF, KRE and KBE

1. Decide whether your goal is a sector allocation or a bank bet

Write the intended role in one sentence before looking at performance charts. “Add U.S. financial-sector exposure to complement QQQ” points toward VFH or XLF. “Increase regional-bank exposure” points toward KRE. “Own banks specifically” points toward KBE or KRE, depending on whether regional-bank exposure is part of the thesis.

2. Choose the breadth you actually need

VFH is the broadest candidate described here because its benchmark spans multiple financial activities and company sizes. XLF also covers multiple subsectors but is the more focused, familiar large-cap choice. KRE and KBE deliberately discard much of that breadth in exchange for bank concentration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Compare your existing holdings for overlap

List every fund and individual stock you already own, then group the positions into banks, insurers, capital-markets firms, asset managers, consumer finance, mortgage finance and other financial businesses. A new ETF can increase exposure to a company or subsector you already own indirectly.

QQQ’s index-level definition excludes financial companies, which limits direct overlap with a financial-sector fund. However, you should still inspect the current holdings of every fund in your portfolio because classification rules, index changes and separately held securities can create exposure you did not expect.

4. Check the current expense ratio and trading cost

Expense ratio is only one implementation cost. Before trading, check the current expense ratio, bid-ask spread, average dollar volume and the time of day you plan to place the order. A fund with a low annual fee can still be expensive to trade if the spread is wide or the order is large relative to normal volume.

5. Confirm the fund’s current index and holdings

Read the latest issuer fact sheet and prospectus. Confirm the benchmark name, concentration rules, top holdings, subsector weights, rebalancing schedule and any changes to the expense ratio. This step matters because holdings, weights, assets, yields and spreads are not permanent characteristics.

6. Set the allocation from your risk plan, not from a headline return

QQQ plus a financial ETF is still an equity portfolio. Decide how much sector concentration you can tolerate, what percentage of the overall portfolio should remain in broad-market or non-sector assets, and what would cause you to reduce the position. The evidence provided for these funds does not support a universal percentage recommendation; the appropriate size depends on your existing exposure, time horizon, liquidity needs and risk capacity.

What can go wrong with a QQQ-plus-financials strategy?

Overconcentration in one economic theme

Adding a financial ETF does not automatically make a portfolio balanced. QQQ concentrates in large non-financial Nasdaq companies, while KRE or KBE can concentrate in banks. You can end up with two strong thematic positions rather than a diversified core portfolio.

Assuming every financial company behaves like a bank

Insurers, brokers, asset managers, mortgage-finance companies and consumer-finance firms respond to different revenue drivers. VFH and XLF include several of these businesses; KRE and KBE do not provide the same breadth. Match the fund to the economic exposure you want instead of using “financials” and “banks” as interchangeable labels.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring the components inside XLF

XLF’s stated coverage includes mortgage REITs and consumer finance as well as banks, insurance and capital markets. Read the current holdings if those categories would materially change your risk profile.

Using stale fee or liquidity data

Fees, assets, yields, holdings and spreads change. The only dated fee figure established here is VFH’s 0.09% expense ratio as of December 19, 2025. Treat any older comparison as a starting point, not a current quote.

Expecting a sector ETF to hedge QQQ

A financial ETF adds a different sector exposure; it is not a guaranteed hedge. Equity markets can decline broadly, and financial companies can face their own credit, funding, regulatory and interest-rate pressures. If your objective is downside protection, evaluate that objective separately rather than assuming sector rotation will provide it.

A practical purchase and review checklist

  1. State the purpose: broad financials, focused large-cap financials, regional banks or banks generally.
  2. Check the benchmark: make sure the fund’s current index matches that purpose.
  3. Map overlap: compare the latest holdings with your other ETFs and individual positions.
  4. Verify costs: record the current expense ratio and estimate the spread and commission or platform costs that apply to your account.
  5. Choose an order method: use a limit order when controlling execution price matters.
  6. Document a review rule: review the position when the fund changes its benchmark, concentration, fee or role in your portfolio, not merely because a short-term chart moved.

Which choice is right for different investor profiles?

The broad diversifier

If you want one financial ETF to fill the sector that QQQ excludes, start with VFH. Its benchmark explicitly spans multiple financial industries and company sizes, and Vanguard’s published expense ratio was 0.09% on December 19, 2025.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The focused large-cap allocator

If you prefer a recognizable, concentrated financial-sector sleeve and accept less breadth than a total-market financials approach, XLF is the natural candidate. Its index includes banks, insurers, capital markets, mortgage REITs, consumer finance and other financial services.

The regional-bank investor

If regional banks are the thesis, KRE is the direct match. Do not select it merely because you want “some financials”; its purpose is narrower.

The bank-only investor

If you want bank exposure without intentionally adding insurers, brokers or asset managers, KBE is the bank-focused alternative identified in the SPDR Q3 2025 reference guide. Compare its current holdings and costs with KRE before deciding how much regional-bank specificity you want.

Bottom line

Use VFH as the default broad financial-sector complement to QQQ, XLF for a focused large-cap financial allocation, and KRE or KBE only when banks—especially regional banks—are the explicit investment thesis. Verify current issuer documents and live trading conditions immediately before investing, because fees, holdings, yields, assets and spreads can change.
