If you want to build shortcuts into the keyboard itself, the strongest documented options here are the Kinesis Advantage360 and ZSA Moonlander Mark I. Both support substantial customization, but their physical layouts differ: the Advantage360 has contoured keywells and thumb keys, while the Moonlander uses two columnar halves. The Logitech ERGO K860 is a more familiar curved office-style alternative; the cited Logitech material describes its layout and palm lift, not comparable macro layers or deep remapping.

How to choose an ergonomic keyboard for shortcut-heavy work

For this use case, compare both what the keyboard lets you program and how its keys are arranged. A curved or split shape alone does not tell you whether you can assign commands, create layers, or make a key behave differently when tapped versus held.

  1. Decide whether you need onboard programming. Consider remapping, layers, dual-function keys, and macros if you want shortcuts stored and triggered from the keyboard.
  2. Choose a physical layout. The options here range from contoured keywells to columnar split halves to a curved office-style board.
  3. Consider positioning and adjustment. Decide whether you want independently movable halves, tenting, or adjustable palm lift.
  4. Match the programming model to your work. Think about whether your common commands benefit from a dedicated key, a layer, tap/hold behavior, or a macro.

The available product information does not establish a controlled comparison of learning curves, typing speed, comfort, or health outcomes. Treat adaptation and ergonomic fit as personal considerations, not guaranteed results.

Best programmable ergonomic keyboards for shortcuts

Kinesis Advantage360: contoured keywells, layers, and macros

The Kinesis Advantage360 is the clearest fit if you want extensive onboard customization alongside a contoured layout. Kinesis describes it as a fully split keyboard: its two modules can be separated and rotated, and it has three integrated tenting heights. The manufacturer says it supports nine programmable layouts with five layers each, onboard remapping, and on-the-fly macros up to 300 characters; settings are saved in onboard flash. These are manufacturer specifications, not independently measured performance.

Its contoured keywells and thumb-key arrangement are another part of the design. Kinesis describes thumb keys for frequently used functions such as Space, Backspace, and Enter. That may be worth considering if you want those functions within thumb reach, but individual comfort with a thumb cluster will vary. See the Advantage360 product overview for the manufacturer’s description of its shape and thumb keys.

ZSA Moonlander Mark I: columnar halves and flexible shortcut mappings

The ZSA Moonlander Mark I uses two split, columnar halves and offers several ways to configure shortcuts. ZSA describes its Oryx editor for creating layouts, Keymapp for displaying the layout and a local heatmap, dual-function keys that send one action when tapped and another when held, and tap-dance behavior. Its one-touch shortcuts can send a combination such as Cmd+S from a single key.

Logitech ERGO K860: familiar curved office layout

The Logitech ERGO K860 is a curved split-keyframe keyboard with adjustable palm lift. Logitech lists palm-lift positions of 0°, -4°, and -7°. It is a reasonable comparison if you prefer a more familiar office-style layout and palm support over a programmable enthusiast board.
