The best starting point for Enshrouded is your monitor’s native resolution with the Balanced or Performance preset, followed by a quality upscaler. Keep textures and draw distance high when your VRAM allows it, then reduce shadows, volumetric effects, indirect lighting, reflections and small foliage before sacrificing resolution or texture detail.
Use DLSS on a GeForce RTX card or FSR on supported hardware at Quality or Balanced first. Move to Performance only after measuring frame time in the same demanding location. A stable, clear 60 FPS is more useful than a higher counter accompanied by stutter, ghosting or unreadable distant geometry.
Recommended Enshrouded settings at a glance
Apply these values as a quality-preserving baseline, then adjust one option at a time. The exact labels and available upscaler modes can vary with your installed build.
| Option | Quality-preserving starting point | If FPS is still short |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution | Monitor’s native resolution | Keep native resolution and try a lower upscaler mode before reducing it directly |
| Upscaler | DLSS or FSR at Quality or Balanced | Performance, then check for blur, shimmer and ghosting |
| Texture resolution | Quality | Lower only when VRAM pressure is evident |
| Shadow quality | Balanced | Performance |
| Contact shadows | On if performance allows | Off |
| Indirect lighting | Balanced | Performance |
| Reflections | Balanced | Performance |
| Fog quality | Performance in fog-heavy scenes | Keep Performance |
| Volumetric shadow quality | Performance | Keep Performance |
| SSAO | Balanced | Performance or Off |
| Distant objects | Balanced | Lower one step if geometry is the bottleneck |
| Voxel mesh/model detail | Balanced | Lower one step in construction-heavy areas |
| Small foliage | Performance | Off if necessary |
| Tessellation | Performance | Keep Performance |
| Point-light shadows | Performance | Keep Performance |
These starting values follow the concrete list published by Prima Games, while the order of operations reflects guidance from iTechGuides and the performance trade-offs described for Enshrouded’s current rendering options.

Start with a repeatable baseline
Do not tune by walking randomly through the world. Choose one route that reliably stresses your system: a settlement with many built objects, a forest with dense vegetation, a foggy Shroud area, or a location with several light sources. Use the same route after every change.
- Load the same save and location. Wait for streaming to settle before recording numbers.
- Record real gameplay FPS and frame time. The average FPS counter can hide short freezes. Note the worst-looking hitch and whether camera movement feels consistent.
- Capture image-quality observations. Check moving foliage, diagonal roof edges, distant structures, reflective surfaces and fog. Look for blur, shimmer, ghost trails and unstable detail.
- Keep input feel in your notes. A setting that raises the counter but makes camera movement feel delayed or uneven may not be an improvement.
Change one setting per test. If you alter shadows, fog and upscaling together, you will not know which change produced the gain or the visual damage. Keep a short log of the old value, the new value, the scene and the observed frame-time change.
Resolution, preset and upscaling
Use native resolution as the reference
Begin at your monitor’s native resolution. It gives you a stable reference for judging text, foliage and distant geometry, and it avoids introducing a second source of softness before you have measured the expensive options. If native rendering misses your target, an upscaler usually preserves the desktop-sized output more cleanly than switching the whole game to a lower display resolution.
Choose Balanced or Performance as a starting preset
The Performance or Balanced preset is a practical starting point because it makes broad reductions without forcing you to guess which option is responsible. After applying it, raise textures and draw-distance-related settings when VRAM and frame time permit, then leave the costly lighting and volumetric options at their lower values.
DLSS versus FSR
DLSS is available on GeForce RTX hardware. FSR supports a broader range of graphics hardware. Start either technology at Quality or Balanced and compare the moving image rather than judging a paused screenshot.
Inspect thin branches, roof lines, fences, distant building edges, reflections and fog while the camera and character are moving. A mode that looks sharp in a still frame can produce ghosting or shimmer in motion. If Quality is clear but too slow, try Balanced. Use Performance only when measured frame time still misses your target and the resulting artifacts are acceptable at your normal viewing distance.
Enshrouded’s options have changed over time. Keen Games Update #3 replaced FSR 2 with FSR 3 and changed other performance behavior, so an older guide may show a menu entry that is no longer present. Select the FSR option exposed by your installed build rather than assuming that an older FSR 2 recommendation still applies.

Which settings should you lower first?
1. Shadows and volumetric shadow quality
Shadows are usually a better first cut than textures. Set shadow quality to Balanced, then Performance if needed. Volumetric shadow quality can remain at Performance because it affects light shafts and atmospheric shading that become expensive in dense or foggy scenes. Point-light shadows are also reasonable to leave at Performance, especially in settlements filled with lamps.
Turn contact shadows off only after checking whether their small grounding detail is worth the cost. They can improve the look of objects touching the ground, but they are not as important to overall scene readability as stable geometry and lighting.
2. Fog and other volumetric effects
Fog quality is particularly expensive in fog-heavy areas. Performance is a sensible default there, and lowering it may have little visible effect during ordinary clear-weather travel. Test it in the exact atmospheric scene where you experience slowdowns, because a setting can appear inexpensive in a settlement and become a major frame-time contributor in the Shroud.

3. Indirect lighting
Indirect lighting controls bounced illumination and contributes to the way interiors, terrain and constructed spaces are lit. Balanced is the quality-first value; Performance is the next cut when lighting-heavy scenes are the problem. Compare a torch-lit interior, a settlement at dusk and a brightly lit outdoor area before deciding.
4. Reflections
Keep reflections at Balanced initially. Lower them to Performance when scenes near reflective surfaces produce spikes. Check water, polished or wet surfaces and large constructed areas after the change. If those surfaces remain readable and the frame-time improvement repeats, the lower value is a useful trade.
5. Small foliage
Small foliage is a strong candidate for Performance or Off. The visual loss is often less noticeable at normal viewing distance than a reduction in textures or distant-object quality, while dense vegetation can create a large number of small details to process. Test while moving through grass and brush, not while standing still.
6. Ambient occlusion and SSAO
Set SSAO to Balanced first. Performance or Off can recover time in scenes where nearby contact shading is costly. The result may look flatter around rocks, walls and objects, so compare an interior and a built-up exterior before keeping the change.

7. Distant objects and voxel mesh/model detail
Lower distant objects one step only when geometry fills the view or distant structures cause the bottleneck. Do the same with voxel mesh/model detail in construction-heavy settlements. These options affect the readability and stability of the world’s geometry, so they should generally be reduced after shadows, fog and small foliage.
8. Tessellation
Performance is an appropriate baseline for tessellation. Keep it there unless you have a specific reason to spend additional frame time on extra surface detail. Judge terrain and close objects at normal gameplay distance rather than zooming in to find differences that are rarely visible during play.
A step-by-step tuning workflow
- Reset to a known baseline. Select the Balanced or Performance preset, choose native resolution, and apply the upscaler mode currently exposed by your build.
- Set the upscaler to Quality or Balanced. Start with Quality if you are close to your target; use Balanced when the baseline is clearly short. Record frame time and inspect moving detail.
- Set textures to Quality. Do not lower them automatically. Texture reductions are most useful when VRAM pressure, texture streaming or severe hitching indicates that memory is the limit.
- Reduce shadow costs. Use Balanced shadows, Performance volumetric shadows and Performance point-light shadows. Retest the same route.
- Test fog and indirect lighting. Use Performance fog in atmospheric areas and Performance indirect lighting if lighting-heavy scenes remain slow.
- Test reflections and SSAO. Lower each separately near reflective surfaces and in scenes where contact shading is prominent.
- Reduce small foliage. Move through the same vegetation at the same speed. Choose Performance or Off if the gain repeats and the scene remains readable.
- Touch geometry settings last. Lower distant objects or voxel mesh/model detail one step when the camera is filled with distant structures or construction detail.
- Try Performance upscaling only if necessary. Recheck moving edges, foliage, fog and distant geometry. Revert if the image becomes distracting at your usual viewing distance.
- Validate outside the test route. Visit a settlement, a vegetation-heavy area, an atmospheric area and a reflective area. Keep the change only if it behaves acceptably across the places you actually play.
How to diagnose the bottleneck by scene
| Where the slowdown appears | Settings to test first | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Dense forest or grass | Small foliage, shadows, fog | Foliage shimmer, loss of ground contact and unstable edges |
| Fog or Shroud areas | Fog quality, volumetric shadow quality, indirect lighting | Reduced atmospheric depth versus a repeatable frame-time gain |
| Large settlements | Voxel mesh/model detail, distant objects, point-light shadows | Geometry pop-in, softened building detail and lamp-shadow changes |
| Water or reflective surfaces | Reflections | Loss of reflection detail and whether spikes disappear near the surface |
| Dark interiors or torch-lit rooms | Indirect lighting, SSAO, point-light shadows | Flat lighting, weaker contact shading and improved frame-time consistency |
Texture quality and VRAM pressure
Textures usually preserve more of the scene’s perceived clarity than many lighting effects, so keep them at Quality when possible. Lower them when you have evidence that video-memory pressure is the problem: texture streaming stalls, sudden hitching while turning, or consistently unstable behavior as new areas load.
A texture setting cannot compensate for a CPU-limited settlement or a GPU-limited volumetric scene. If lowering textures produces no repeatable frame-time improvement, restore Quality and spend the performance budget elsewhere. Keep your test route and camera movement consistent so that streaming variance does not look like a setting gain.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

FPS is an average over time; frame time shows how long each frame takes. A nominally high average can still feel poor when occasional frames take much longer than the rest. During each test, note whether camera pans, traversal and combat remain even, not just the number displayed by an overlay.
When two settings produce similar averages, keep the one with fewer spikes and clearer motion. Upscaling artifacts can also be temporal: ghost trails may appear only when a character or foliage moves. That is why every change must be judged while moving through the scene.
Hardware, drivers and co-op caveats
There is no universal FPS gain for a single Enshrouded setting. Results vary with GPU, CPU, VRAM, resolution, graphics drivers, game version, scene complexity and whether the world is hosted in co-op. A setting that helps a solo settlement may not address a CPU-limited multiplayer session.

NVIDIA reported that Enshrouded could use DLSS 2 to accelerate frame rates by an average of 93% at 4K with maximum settings enabled. That is a vendor-reported result, not a guarantee for every RTX model, resolution, mode or scene. Treat it as evidence that upscaling can be substantial in a particular test configuration, not as a promise of a fixed percentage on your system.
Use current drivers appropriate for your GPU and verify that the game is using the intended graphics device. If a driver update changes image quality or frame pacing, repeat your baseline route before judging the new result. Do not assume that a number from an older build transfers directly to the current one.
Updates can change the best settings
Enshrouded’s rendering behavior is not static. Update #3 replaced FSR 2 with FSR 3 and changed other performance behavior. Update #8 improved vegetation rendering, dynamic global illumination, RAM use and voxel-building detail. Those changes can alter both the cost of a setting and the visual difference between quality levels.
After a major update, verify the actual menu options, reset any profile that no longer matches the labels, and repeat a short baseline test. An older guide that recommends FSR 2, or that assumes the pre-update vegetation renderer, may describe a trade-off that no longer matches your installation.

The FPS counter is high but the game still stutters
Check frame-time consistency in the same route. Test shadows, volumetric effects and geometry streaming separately, and watch for spikes when turning toward a settlement or entering a new area. If the problem occurs mainly while new areas load, texture quality and VRAM pressure deserve attention; if it occurs around lights or fog, test the corresponding volumetric and lighting settings.
The image is too blurry after enabling an upscaler
Move from Performance to Balanced or Quality and compare moving foliage and distant structures. Make sure you are not judging a screenshot with a sharpened still image; motion reveals the actual trade-off. If Quality is still unacceptable, use native rendering and lower shadows or volumetric options instead.
Foliage shimmers or leaves leave trails
Compare native rendering with the available Quality and Balanced upscaler modes. Check diagonal branches and grass while panning slowly. Keep the mode with the least distracting shimmer, even if its average FPS is lower, and recover additional time from shadows, fog or small foliage.

Distant buildings look unstable or pop in
Restore distant objects or voxel mesh/model detail by one step and retest. These settings affect geometry readability more directly than texture quality. If the problem is limited to a construction-heavy settlement, accept a lower value elsewhere only if the settlement remains usable and the frame-time gain is repeatable.

Reflections or fog are the only scenes that slow down
Use the scene-specific approach rather than lowering every option. Set reflections to Performance near reflective surfaces and fog to Performance in atmospheric areas. Validate both settings in ordinary scenes so you do not trade away quality where the effect is rarely visible.
Three practical starting profiles
Quality-first profile
- Native resolution.
- DLSS or FSR at Quality.
- Quality textures.
- Balanced shadows, indirect lighting, reflections, SSAO, distant objects and voxel mesh/model detail.
- Performance fog, volumetric shadows, tessellation and point-light shadows.
- Performance small foliage, with contact shadows On if frame time allows.
Use this when your system is close to its target and moving-image clarity matters most.
Balanced profile
- Native resolution.
- DLSS or FSR at Balanced.
- Quality textures.
- Performance shadows, fog, volumetric shadows, small foliage, tessellation and point-light shadows.
- Balanced indirect lighting, reflections, SSAO, distant objects and voxel mesh/model detail.
- Contact shadows Off if the baseline remains uneven.
Use this as the general-purpose starting point for a stable experience without making geometry unnecessarily soft.
FPS-first profile
- Native resolution with the upscaler at Performance.
- Quality textures unless VRAM pressure is documented.
- Performance shadows, indirect lighting, reflections, fog, volumetric shadows, tessellation, point-light shadows and small foliage.
- SSAO Performance or Off.
- Distant objects and voxel mesh/model detail one step below Balanced only when the scene is geometry-limited.
- Contact shadows Off.
Use this only after confirming that Quality or Balanced upscaling cannot meet your target. Recheck foliage, diagonal edges, reflections and fog for artifacts before keeping it.

Keep a setting only when its gain repeats in the same test route and the visual loss is acceptable at your normal viewing distance. The strongest general compromise is native output with Quality or Balanced upscaling, Quality textures, and lower-cost shadows and volumetric effects. If your system still misses the target, move through the table in order rather than dropping every option at once.
Finally, revisit the profile after game updates, driver changes or a move to a different resolution. Enshrouded’s rendering systems have changed across updates, and the best setting today is the one that matches your installed build, hardware and the scenes you actually play.
