Intel rates the N100 processor at 6 W TDP and lists Quick Sync Video, while ASUS offers an N100 configuration of its NUC 14 Essential. Those processor specifications do not tell you the complete PC’s wall-power use or prove that a particular setup can stream reliably around the clock. If your channel only loops prerecorded videos, a cloud service may avoid leaving a PC running at all.
First decide whether you need a mini PC
A 24/7 YouTube stream can mean two different things, and the distinction determines what to buy.
- Live, locally produced content: A camera, gameplay, RTSP feed, capture device, screen capture, browser overlay, filters, or live scene composition needs a computer running OBS or another encoder. A mini PC can host that workflow.
- Prerecorded video or a playlist: If the channel repeats uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live source, a cloud looping service can run the broadcast without an always-on computer at home.
A cloud loop cannot replace a local OBS host when the content depends on a live camera, gameplay, capture source, or local compositing.
What mini PC is a reasonable starting point?
Intel N100 systems, including the ASUS NUC 14 Essential
Intel describes the N100 as a four-core, four-thread processor with 6 W TDP, Quick Sync Video, and support for 4K at 60 Hz output. ASUS lists an N100 configuration for the NUC 14 Essential. This makes an N100 mini PC a reasonable candidate to investigate for a modest stream, particularly if OBS can use a compatible hardware encoder instead of relying on CPU-only software encoding. Do not choose by processor name alone. Confirm the exact SKU, included memory and storage, operating system, warranty, seller, and local availability. Check that your installed OS, drivers, and OBS version expose the encoder you intend to use; a processor-family feature does not by itself establish OBS compatibility on a particular system.
Why 6 W TDP is not the PC’s electricity use
The 6 W figure is Intel’s processor TDP, not a measured wall-power result for a complete mini PC while encoding. Memory, storage, cooling, networking, peripherals, and workload affect whole-system draw. Intel also notes that capabilities may vary with the complete system configuration and that performance varies by use and configuration. Measure the complete machine under your intended stream if energy cost matters.

How to choose hardware for your actual OBS workload
OBS’s system requirements say CPU needs vary considerably with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; meeting baseline requirements does not guarantee that a machine can stream successfully. OBS recommends its Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, not a substitute for testing your scenes. See the OBS system requirements.
- Fix the workload first: Decide output resolution, frame rate, codec, audio sources, overlays, filters, and other applications before shopping.
- Verify hardware encoding in practice: Confirm the intended encoder appears in OBS on the exact OS and driver setup. Run a representative test rather than assuming Quick Sync will be available or suitable.
- Compare complete systems: Consider the actual purchase price and included components, wired networking, sustained cooling and noise, restart/reconnect behavior, warranty, and regional support—not only CPU model or TDP.
- Test the scene that will really run: Include representative motion, audio, browser sources, and concurrent applications. Watch OBS load and YouTube stream health.
- Measure power at the wall: Take an average during representative streaming, not from a short idle reading, then calculate electricity cost using your local tariff.
No comparable model-specific whole-system power readings, thermal/noise comparisons, or 24/7 endurance results are established here, so it would be misleading to rank N100 mini PCs as tested round-the-clock champions.

Set OBS to meet YouTube’s ingest requirements
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest and H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 codecs. It supports frame rates up to 60 fps, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), recommends a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds, and recommends RTMPS. Its bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. For example, YouTube Help recommends 17 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p60 and 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30; these are ingest recommendations, not a guarantee of stream health or a mini PC performance benchmark. Check the current YouTube live encoder settings for the target codec and output mode.
- Choose the output mode: Set the resolution and frame rate in OBS to match your intended broadcast and the machine’s tested capability.
- Select a supported encoder and codec: Use an encoder actually available in OBS on your installed OS and drivers. Match the codec to YouTube’s current ingest guidance.
- Set rate control and keyframes: Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval as YouTube recommends; keep the interval at or below four seconds.
- Use RTMPS where available: YouTube recommends RTMPS for the connection.
- Connect the stream key securely: In YouTube Studio’s live control room, obtain the stream key for the broadcast and enter it in OBS’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password; anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your channel.
- Test before relying on unattended operation: YouTube recommends checking upload capacity, testing with audio and movement similar to the real stream, and monitoring stream health. Complete a longer run and verify recovery after restarting the PC or interrupting the network before leaving it unattended.

Use the average whole-system draw measured during the intended stream, together with your electricity rate:

Annual electricity cost = average watts ÷ 1,000 × 24 × 365 × price per kWh.
For example, enter your measured average watts and your local price per kilowatt-hour in the formula. Do not substitute Intel’s processor TDP or a brief idle reading for the complete system’s representative streaming draw. For a fair purchase comparison, add the mini PC’s upfront cost, expected electricity, and any required peripherals or replacement hardware.

Buying and reliability checklist
- Determine whether you need a local live encoder or only a prerecorded-video loop.
- Confirm the exact computer configuration and that OBS exposes the intended hardware encoder.
- Test the real sources, overlays, motion, audio, output settings, and other apps together.
- Check OBS load and YouTube stream health during the test; verify upload capacity.
- Measure complete-system wall power during representative use and calculate electricity cost at your tariff.
- Run an extended test, then verify behavior after a restart and network interruption before depending on unattended operation.
OBS’s official guidance puts the limitation plainly: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” No model-specific test here establishes that the ASUS NUC 14 Essential or another N100 mini PC will run a particular stream continuously without interruption.
