For a standard SDR 4K60 YouTube gaming stream on an RTX 4070, start with OBS’s Hardware (NVENC, AV1) encoder and P6: Slower (Better Quality). Set CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval and 35 Mbps; use High Quality tuning, two-pass quarter-resolution multipass, Look-ahead, Psycho Visual Tuning and four B-frames. Treat this as a starting configuration, not a proven universal winner: test it with your game and monitor YouTube’s stream health.

Recommended OBS settings for 4K60 SDR

OBS’s NVIDIA NVENC guide recommends NVENC AV1 for YouTube on RTX 40-series GPUs. Combined with YouTube’s current encoder guidance, these settings are a sensible first configuration for 4K/2160p at 60 fps:

OBS setting Starting value Why it matters
Encoder Hardware (NVENC, AV1) OBS recommends AV1 for YouTube on RTX 40-series GPUs.
Rate control CBR YouTube recommends constant bitrate for live ingest.
Bitrate 35 Mbps YouTube’s current recommended AV1/HEVC bitrate for 4K60.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
Preset P6: Slower (Better Quality) OBS’s practical NVENC starting point for quality without selecting the most demanding preset.
Tuning High Quality OBS guide starting value.
Multipass mode Two Passes (Quarter Resolution) OBS guide starting value.
Look-ahead On OBS guide starting value; turn it off if GPU utilization is high.
Psycho Visual Tuning On OBS guide starting value.
Maximum B-frames 4 with Look-ahead on; 2 with it off OBS guide’s suggested values for these Look-ahead settings.

In OBS, open Settings > Output, switch Output Mode to Advanced, then configure the streaming encoder options. Labels can vary between OBS releases. YouTube recommends RTMPS for ingest; select it in the streaming service or server settings if your setup offers that option.

Choose the codec for SDR or HDR

SDR: start with AV1

For SDR, AV1 is the best-supported starting choice for an RTX 4070: OBS’s guide points RTX 40-series users to NVENC AV1 for YouTube, and YouTube recommends 35 Mbps for AV1 or HEVC at 4K60. That recommendation does not establish a specific visual-quality advantage over H.264 in every game or scene.

#1 Best Overall
ASUS Dual GeForce RTX 4070 Super EVO OC Edition 12GB GDDR6X (PCIe 4.0, 12GB GDDR6X, DLSS 3, HDMI 2.1a, DisplayPort 1.4a, 2.5-Slot Design, Axial-tech Fan Design, 0dB Technology), 3 Year Warranty
  • Powered by NVIDIA DLSS3, ultra-efficient Ada Lovelace arch, and full ray tracing
  • 4th Generation Tensor Cores: Up to 4x performance with DLSS 3 vs. brute-force rendering
  • 3rd Generation RT Cores: Up to 2x ray tracing performance
  • OC edition: Boost Clock 2550 MHz (OC Mode)/ 2520 MHz (Default Mode)
  • Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure

H.264: allow more upload headroom

If you need H.264 compatibility, YouTube’s recommended 4K60 bitrate is 50 Mbps. That is 15 Mbps more than its AV1/HEVC recommendation, so confirm your upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate reliably. YouTube’s figures are recommendations, not guarantees of quality or connection capacity.

HDR: use HEVC/H.265

For YouTube HDR, use HEVC/H.265 rather than AV1: YouTube says AV1 is not supported for HDR and recommends H.265 over RTMP(S). YouTube lists 10-bit for HDR, and OBS’s NVENC guide recommends HEVC with the main10 profile. Confirm the HDR settings in your OBS version and capture chain as well as in the game; an SDR source will not become genuine HDR simply by changing the encoder.

Why P6 is a starting point, not a guaranteed best

P6 is OBS’s recommended practical preset in its NVIDIA NVENC guide, not the result of a published, controlled RTX 4070 benchmark across games, drivers and OBS versions. The RTX 4070 must render the game while NVENC encodes the stream. A demanding game, high frame rate, complex scene or other GPU work can leave too little headroom, causing rendering or encoding lag.

OBS’s newer OBS 31.0 advanced-options article warns that Ultra High Quality tuning is not recommended for gaming content because it significantly reduces throughput. Do not choose it as a blanket way to improve a gaming stream. The same article says split encode requires two or more Ada NVENC engines (4070 Ti or higher); do not assume the ordinary RTX 4070 has that capability.

Test the actual stream before going live

  1. Match the real workload. Run the game at the resolution and frame rate you intend to stream, with the usual OBS scenes, capture sources and audio. Test during representative fast movement, not only a quiet menu.
  2. Check the upload connection. YouTube’s 35 Mbps AV1/HEVC or 50 Mbps H.264 recommendation is the video bitrate, not a guarantee that your connection can sustain it. Leave capacity for audio and normal network variation; if the upload is unstable, lower the bitrate or stream resolution rather than relying on a borderline connection.
  3. Watch OBS and YouTube stream health. Look for dropped frames, rendering or encoding lag, and warnings in YouTube’s stream health indicator. YouTube explicitly recommends testing before starting and monitoring stream health during the event.
  4. Change one demanding setting at a time. If GPU load is high or frames are missed, reduce the game’s frame rate or graphics settings first. If needed, disable Look-ahead and use two B-frames, as the OBS guide suggests when Look-ahead is off. Retest before changing several encoder options together.

YouTube says 4K live streams are optimized for quality at normal latency; the low-latency option is unavailable at 4K. If low latency is more important than 4K, choose a supported lower resolution rather than expecting the 4K stream to offer that mode.

Troubleshooting common 4K60 problems

Symptom Likely cause What to try
YouTube reports unstable or insufficient bitrate The upload connection cannot sustain the configured bitrate consistently. Test the connection under normal household use; lower the bitrate or resolution until stream health is stable. Use 35 Mbps as YouTube’s AV1/HEVC 4K60 recommendation, not as proof that your line can carry it.
OBS reports rendering lag The game and OBS compete for GPU resources. Cap the game’s frame rate or lower graphics settings. Retest before reducing encoder quality.
OBS reports encoding lag or the stream stutters The workload may be too demanding for the current configuration, or GPU utilization may be high. Disable Look-ahead and set B-frames to 2; retest. If needed, reduce the game’s GPU load and verify whether the issue persists.
HDR image is missing or incorrect AV1 was selected, or the source/output chain is not configured for HDR. Use HEVC/H.265 with main10 as OBS recommends for YouTube HDR, and verify that the game, capture path and OBS output are actually HDR.
H.264 stream is unstable at the recommended setting YouTube’s H.264 4K60 recommendation is 50 Mbps, which may exceed available upload headroom. Use AV1 or HEVC if appropriate for your stream, or lower the bitrate or resolution. Do not assume the H.264 and AV1/HEVC recommendations are interchangeable.
