In Hoenn, Surskit is the earliest direct alternative to Wurmple in Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire: it can appear in Route 102 grass, although the ordinary encounter is rare. In Emerald, Surskit is not available through ordinary wild encounters, so Nincada on Route 116 is the practical replacement. Nincada is also available on Route 116 in the other Hoenn editions and offers the unusual possibility of obtaining both Ninjask and Shedinja.

Wurmple remains the fastest of these Hoenn lines to reach a final evolution: it branches at level 7 and reaches Beautifly or Dustox at level 10. Surskit evolves into Masquerain at level 22, while Nincada evolves at level 20. The best choice therefore depends on your edition, how early you need the catch, and whether you value a distinctive evolution project over speed.

Tarountula Early Paldean Bug line South Province Area One; Spidops at level 15 Scarlet, Violet Oct 2026

The first two rows answer the Hoenn question. The remaining rows are examples from their own regions, not Pokémon you can ordinarily catch in Ruby, Sapphire or Emerald.

Which Hoenn alternative should you choose?

Choose Surskit in Ruby, Sapphire or either Hoenn remake if you want the earliest different species. Choose Nincada in Emerald, or when you specifically want its two-evolution outcome. Keep Wurmple if reaching a final form quickly matters more than controlling the result.

A useful way to decide is to separate the question into three stages. First identify the exact edition, because Emerald’s encounter list is not interchangeable with Ruby and Sapphire’s. Next decide whether “early” means the earliest route or the earliest final evolution. Finally decide whether you want one predictable evolutionary line or the extra collection step associated with Nincada. This prevents a common mistake: choosing a species from a different regional guide and then discovering that it cannot be found in the game being played.

Surskit: the earliest direct replacement

Route 102 is the key location in Ruby, Sapphire, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. Surskit is listed as a rare ordinary-grass encounter there; the original Ruby and Sapphire grass table gives it a 1% rate, compared with 30% for Wurmple. Those are encounter-table figures for that route and method, not a guarantee that a particular patch of grass will produce Surskit quickly.

That difference is practical. A player can walk through many encounters and see only Wurmple or other listed species before Surskit appears. There is no fixed number of steps that guarantees one. Treat the 1% value as the chance assigned to each eligible encounter, not as a progress meter. The remake route is still the early Surskit location, but its table should be checked as remake-specific data rather than assumed to copy the original games exactly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Surskit is Bug/Water when caught and evolves into Bug/Flying Masquerain at level 22. The Water typing therefore does not carry through to the evolved form. Its earlier location is the main advantage over Nincada, while its level-22 evolution is the cost. If you only need a different Bug Pokémon for the first part of the story, Surskit can fill that role immediately; if you want a final evolution soon, the level requirement is much less attractive than Wurmple’s.

The Ruby Pokédex describes Surskit this way: “From the tips of its feet, SURSKIT secretes an oil that enables it to walk on water as if it were skating.” That is flavor text, not a capture or battle-performance promise; the entry is reproduced at Pokémon Database.

Nincada: the Emerald-safe recommendation

Nincada appears in Route 116 in Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. The original games’ Route 116 grass table lists a 20% Nincada encounter rate. It arrives later than Route 102 Pokémon, but it is the dependable wild-catch answer for Emerald, where ordinary play does not provide Surskit.

The 20% figure also explains why Nincada is usually less frustrating to locate in the original games than a 1% Surskit. It still does not mean that the next five encounters must contain one, and remake tables should be treated separately. Once you reach Route 116, search the ordinary grass and catch Nincada before committing to a different line if your goal is Ninjask or Shedinja.

Nincada is Bug/Ground and evolves into Bug/Flying Ninjask at level 20. If the evolution is performed with an empty party slot and at least one Poké Ball in the bag, a Bug/Ghost Shedinja is also added. That extra result is why Nincada is more than a simple substitute: one capture can become a two-Pokémon evolution project, provided the inventory and party conditions are met.

For a planned Shedinja attempt, check the party before the level-up that triggers evolution rather than assuming the game will reserve a slot automatically. Keep at least one Poké Ball in the bag, leave an open party position, and then allow Nincada to evolve. If either condition is missing, Nincada still becomes Ninjask, but the additional Shedinja does not appear at that event. The requirement is therefore easy to satisfy when planned and easy to miss when the party is full.

Wurmple as the speed benchmark

Wurmple is available on early Hoenn routes, including Route 102. At level 7 it becomes Silcoon or Cascoon according to its personality value, then reaches Beautifly or Dustox at level 10. You cannot choose the branch simply by selecting a level, so the trade-off is speed versus control.

That branch mechanic matters when comparing alternatives. Surskit and Nincada remove the Silcoon-versus-Cascoon uncertainty, but they do so at the price of later evolution levels. Wurmple is therefore still the logical pick for a player who wants a final form before the alternatives are ready, even if the eventual Beautifly-or-Dustox result is not chosen directly.

What changes between Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald and the remakes?

Edition is the first decision because the same route name does not guarantee the same encounter list.

Edition group Surskit Nincada Practical choice
Ruby and Sapphire Route 102 grass, rare (1% in the original table) Route 116 grass (20% in the original table) Try Surskit for the earliest alternative; use Nincada if you prefer a more available encounter
Emerald Not ordinarily available in the wild Route 116 grass Use Nincada unless you can obtain Surskit from another game
Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire Route 102 grass, rare Route 116 grass Surskit is the early option; Nincada remains the distinctive later option

If you are buying or replaying Pokémon Omega Ruby for Nintendo 3DS, Alpha Sapphire is the parallel edition choice for this encounter question. Pokémon Emerald for Game Boy Advance belongs to the original-game row and carries the Surskit warning above. The hardware label does not change the central advice: verify the edition first, then use the route associated with that edition.

For Emerald players asking whether more searching will eventually solve the problem, it will not. Ordinary Emerald Route 102 grass does not offer Surskit, so the alternatives are to use Nincada on Route 116 or obtain Surskit from another game or transfer route. A longer search on the wrong route cannot overcome an absent encounter entry.

How do the Hoenn lines compare as they evolve?

Line Typing when caught Evolution result Final evolution level Special consideration
Wurmple Bug Silcoon or Cascoon, then Beautifly or Dustox 10 Personality-dependent branch
Surskit Bug/Water Masquerain, Bug/Flying 22 Rare Route 102 encounter; not ordinarily wild in Emerald
Nincada Bug/Ground Ninjask, Bug/Flying; Shedinja may also be obtained 20 Empty party slot and a Poké Ball are required for Shedinja

None of the Hoenn alternatives matches Wurmple’s level-10 final evolution. Surskit gives you the earliest different catch, while Nincada gives you the broadest evolution outcome. This information does not establish that one line universally performs better against a particular Gym; moves, levels and the exact edition would need a separate matchup analysis.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The typing comparison is about what changes during the line, not a promise of superiority. Surskit starts with two types and loses Water when it becomes Masquerain. Nincada starts Bug/Ground, then produces a Bug/Flying Ninjask and, under the stated conditions, a Bug/Ghost Shedinja. Wurmple begins as a single-type Bug and can end in either of two different final species. These are distinct collection and planning choices even before battle moves are considered.

Where do you catch the Hoenn alternatives?

Finding Surskit on Route 102

  1. Use Ruby, Sapphire, Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire; Emerald’s ordinary Route 102 grass does not provide Surskit.
  2. Walk through the regular grass on Route 102 and expect a rare encounter rather than a guaranteed appearance.
  3. Catch it before investing training time if you specifically want Masquerain’s Bug/Flying evolution at level 22.
  4. If the search is taking longer than expected, remember that the 1% original-game rate is independent per encounter; restarting the route does not create a guarantee.

The 1% figure applies to the original Ruby/Sapphire Route 102 standard grass table. Remake encounter tables should be read as their own edition data rather than assumed to be identical.

Finding Nincada on Route 116

  1. Reach Route 116 in any of the five listed Hoenn editions.
  2. Search the route’s ordinary grass; the original-game table lists Nincada at 20%.
  3. Decide before training whether you want only Ninjask or the additional Shedinja result.
  4. If you want the Shedinja result, make sure your party has an open slot and your bag contains a Poké Ball when Nincada evolves.

Route 116 makes Nincada the consistent cross-edition recommendation, especially for Emerald players. It is also the cleaner choice for a collector who wants to plan around one capture producing two recorded species rather than repeatedly hunting a rare Route 102 encounter.

Which Bug Pokémon are alternatives in other regions?

These lines answer a broader “what can replace Wurmple?” question, but they are tied to their own games and routes. They should not be read as Ruby, Sapphire or Emerald encounter advice.

Kanto: Caterpie and Weedle

Caterpie and Weedle are documented in Viridian Forest in relevant Kanto editions. Both reach their final forms at level 10: Caterpie becomes Butterfree, while Weedle becomes Beedrill. Caterpie’s line ends as Bug/Flying; Weedle’s ends as Bug/Poison, giving the two quick lines different identities despite the same evolution level. They are useful benchmarks for speed, not substitutes that can be imported into a normal early Hoenn route encounter.

Sinnoh: Kricketot

Kricketot appears on early routes in Diamond, Pearl and Platinum and evolves into Kricketune at level 10. It is a useful comparison for players who want a rapid early Bug evolution in Sinnoh rather than a Hoenn substitute. Its inclusion here answers a regional comparison question without implying that the species belongs in Ruby, Sapphire or Emerald.

Unova: Sewaddle and Venipede

Both Sewaddle and Venipede are documented in Pinwheel Forest in Black and White. Sewaddle is Bug/Grass and eventually reaches Leavanny after Swadloon gains high friendship, so its final evolution depends on a relationship condition rather than only a level. Venipede is Bug/Poison and reaches Scolipede at level 30, making it a longer-term project than Wurmple. These lines suit players who are comfortable with a delayed or condition-based payoff.

Kalos: Scatterbug

Scatterbug is found on Route 2 or in Santalune Forest in X and Y and evolves into Vivillon at level 12. That makes it one of the closer non-Hoenn comparisons for players who want a quick final Bug form. The route and level apply to Kalos games only.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Alola: Grubbin

Grubbin is listed on Route 1 in Sun and Moon. Its middle stage, Charjabug, gains Electric typing. The condition for the final Vikavolt evolution depends on the game, so do not apply one universal instruction across every Alola title. This is another example where the middle-stage typing and final-evolution method both need to be checked for the specific game.

Paldea: Tarountula

Tarountula is listed in South Province Area One in Scarlet and Violet and evolves into Spidops at level 15. It is an early Paldean Bug line, but its route and level information belong only to those games. It offers a modern comparison for players who want a straightforward early catch without treating it as a Hoenn encounter.

How should you decide?

  • Playing Ruby, Sapphire, Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire and want the earliest different catch: search Route 102 for Surskit and accept that the encounter is rare.
  • Playing Emerald: go to Route 116 for Nincada; do not spend time searching Route 102 for a wild Surskit.
  • Want the quickest final evolution: Wurmple, Caterpie, Weedle and Kricketot reach their listed final forms at level 10 in their respective games, while Surskit and Nincada take longer.
  • Want an unusual collection goal: choose Nincada and prepare the empty party slot and Poké Ball needed for Shedinja.
  • Want to control the exact Wurmple outcome: remember that its Silcoon/Cascoon branch is personality-dependent; switching to Surskit or Nincada avoids that particular branch mechanic, but neither evolves as early.
  • Want a specific later typing: account for the evolution change rather than judging only the capture form. Masquerain is Bug/Flying, Ninjask is Bug/Flying, and Shedinja is Bug/Ghost.
  • Want a cross-region recommendation: first select the game generation, then use that region’s listed route. A fast line such as Caterpie or Scatterbug is relevant only inside its own edition.

What mistakes should you avoid?

  • Using a Kanto or later-generation guide for Hoenn: Caterpie, Weedle, Kricketot, Scatterbug and the other regional examples are not ordinary early encounters in Ruby, Sapphire or Emerald.
  • Assuming Emerald shares Ruby and Sapphire’s Surskit table: it does not provide a normal wild Surskit encounter.
  • Confusing capture typing with evolved typing: Surskit starts Bug/Water, but Masquerain is Bug/Flying.
  • Expecting Nincada’s extra evolution automatically: Shedinja requires both an empty party slot and a Poké Ball at the evolution event.
  • Treating encounter percentages as guarantees: the 1%, 20% and 30% values are route-table rates for specified games and grass encounters, not a promise about how many steps a particular player will need.
  • Copying original-game percentages into a remake: use the correct edition’s encounter table instead of assuming every route rate is unchanged.
  • Promising Gym performance from typing alone: the available moves, levels and edition-specific mechanics still determine a matchup, so these recommendations rank availability and evolution characteristics rather than universal battle results.
  • Filling the party before a planned Nincada evolution: a full party prevents the stated Shedinja outcome even if a Poké Ball is available.

How were these recommendations ranked?

The ranking uses five practical criteria: whether the Pokémon is genuinely available in the named edition, how early its route can be reached, its typing before and after evolution, the level or condition needed to evolve, and any extra requirement such as Nincada’s Shedinja setup. Surskit ranks first for supported Hoenn editions because Route 102 is earlier; Nincada ranks first for Emerald because it is the ordinary-play option there. Cross-region lines follow only as clearly labeled examples.

This ranking deliberately separates availability from convenience. Surskit wins the earliest-route category but loses on rarity and evolution level. Nincada wins the Emerald category and offers the most unusual collection result, but it arrives later. Wurmple wins the speed category while leaving the branch outcome to its personality value. Once those trade-offs are explicit, the recommendation is easy to adapt to a casual run, a Pokédex completion goal or a replay with a preferred final typing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can’t I find Surskit in Pokémon Emerald?

Emerald uses a different wild-encounter distribution from Ruby and Sapphire, and ordinary Emerald play does not place Surskit in Route 102 grass. A Surskit in Emerald therefore has to come from another game or an external transfer route rather than from searching that route longer.

Do the Route 102 percentages mean I will find Surskit after 100 steps?

No. A 1% entry describes the encounter table for the specified route and grass method; it is not a countdown or a guaranteed result after a fixed number of steps. Consecutive encounters are independent, so short searches can produce none and longer searches can produce several.

Can one Nincada evolution really give me both Ninjask and Shedinja?

Yes, but only when the evolution has an unused party slot and at least one Poké Ball available. Without those conditions, Nincada still evolves into Ninjask, but the additional Shedinja result is not created at that event.

Does Masquerain keep Surskit’s Water typing?

No. Surskit is Bug/Water when caught, while Masquerain is Bug/Flying after evolution. Choose the line for that change only if the later typing fits the role you want in that particular game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Nincada easier to encounter than Surskit?

In the original Ruby and Sapphire tables, Nincada is listed at 20% on Route 116 while Surskit is 1% on Route 102, so Nincada is the more common of those two documented encounters there. Those percentages describe their specific original-game grass tables, not every remake table.

Can I choose whether Wurmple becomes Beautifly or Dustox?

Not simply by choosing a level. Wurmple’s level-7 branch is determined by its personality value, so the result is not selected through a normal menu choice. Pick Surskit or Nincada if avoiding that particular branch mechanic matters more than evolving quickly.

Are Caterpie, Weedle or Scatterbug available as early Hoenn replacements?

No. They are useful comparisons from Kanto or Kalos, but they are not ordinary early wild encounters in Ruby, Sapphire or Emerald. Use the Hoenn route information for those games and the regional examples only for their own editions.

What should I buy or carry for a Nincada-to-Shedinja plan?

The documented requirement is at least one Poké Ball in the bag and an empty party slot when Nincada evolves. No special shop item or external product is required by the stated mechanic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

For Ruby, Sapphire, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, hunt Route 102 for rare Surskit if you want the earliest different Hoenn Bug. In Emerald, go to Route 116 for Nincada instead. Keep Wurmple when level-10 final evolution is the priority; choose Nincada when the Ninjask-and-Shedinja collection outcome is worth waiting for.
