For the Best Dual Boot Manager software for Windows 11/10/8/7 PC, use Windows Boot Manager for two Windows installations, Grub2Win for a Windows-configured Windows/Linux setup, and rEFInd for advanced UEFI multiboot. EasyBCD is mainly a convenient Windows BCD editor, while Linux users may prefer their distribution’s native GRUB or systemd-boot.

There is no universal best dual-boot manager because these tools work at different layers. Windows Boot Manager edits the Windows Boot Configuration Data store, GRUB and rEFInd manage broader operating-system boot paths, and tools such as BootIt Bare Metal combine boot management with partition operations.

This guide covers Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows 8/8.1, and Windows 7. Technical compatibility does not mean that an older Windows release remains secure, supported, or suitable for modern hardware. In particular, Microsoft ended free Windows 10 security updates and technical support after October 14, 2025.

Key takeaways

  • Windows Boot Manager and bcdboot are normally sufficient for Windows 10 and Windows 11 dual boot, so a third-party manager is not required.
  • Grub2Win is the strongest Windows-side GUI choice for configuring a Windows/Linux boot menu, according to its official compatibility claims for Windows 7 through Windows 11 and both UEFI and traditional BIOS systems.
  • rEFInd is the best advanced choice for UEFI multiboot because it can automatically detect EFI bootloaders and Linux kernels, but Secure Boot configuration can require technical work.
  • EasyBCD is best treated as a graphical BCD editor for changing Windows boot entries, defaults, and timeouts—not as a universal replacement for Linux’s native bootloader.
  • UEFI/GPT and legacy BIOS/MBR are different boot environments; installing operating systems in mismatched modes is a common reason a dual-boot entry disappears.
  • Back up files, save the BitLocker recovery key, create recovery media, and suspend BitLocker before changing boot files, firmware settings, or partitions.

Do you need third-party dual-boot software?

Windows-only dual boot usually does not need third-party software. Microsoft’s Windows Boot Manager stores startup choices in the Boot Configuration Data store, and Microsoft’s bcdboot utility can add or recreate a Windows boot entry.

  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

For example, an elevated Command Prompt can add a second Windows installation with:

bcdboot D:Windows

The D: drive letter is only an example. Drive letters can change in Windows Recovery Environment or when another Windows installation is running, so identify the correct volume first with diskpart and list volume.

Windows plus Linux is different. A Linux distribution’s own GRUB or systemd-boot installation is often the most integrated option because the distribution can maintain Linux kernel entries and Secure Boot signing. Grub2Win becomes useful when a Windows user specifically wants to configure GRUB from Windows. rEFInd is useful when several UEFI bootloaders need to be discovered and presented in one graphical menu.

A boot manager also cannot install a second operating system by itself. The second operating system must already be installed, or the operating-system installer must create its partitions and boot files.

What is the best dual-boot manager for each setup?

Setup or priority Recommended choice Why it fits Main limitation
Windows 10 plus Windows 11 Windows Boot Manager Built into Windows, Microsoft-supported, and sufficient for native Windows entries Less customizable and less Linux-aware than GRUB or rEFInd
Windows plus Linux, configured from Windows Grub2Win Provides a Windows-based graphical workflow for configuring GRUB and claims UEFI and legacy-BIOS support Unusual filesystems, encryption, Secure Boot, and kernel layouts may still require manual work
Simple Windows boot-entry editing EasyBCD Graphical editing of Windows BCD entries, names, order, default choice, and timeout It is primarily a BCD editor, not an independent Linux-native boot ecosystem
Several UEFI operating systems or EFI loaders rEFInd Automatically detects EFI bootloaders and Linux kernels and offers a graphical boot screen UEFI-focused; Secure Boot and installation can be technical
Linux-first dual boot Distribution GRUB or systemd-boot Usually integrated with Linux kernel updates, installers, and signed Secure Boot paths Configuration varies by distribution and may be less convenient from Windows
Boot management plus partition operations BootIt Bare Metal Combines boot configuration with specialist partition-management capabilities Paid, advanced, and unnecessary for a normal two-OS menu

What is the difference between a boot manager and a bootloader?

A boot manager presents operating-system choices and transfers control to an operating-system bootloader; a bootloader then loads the operating system itself.

  • Windows Boot Manager presents Windows startup choices and reads Windows BCD entries.
  • GRUB is commonly installed by Linux distributions and can launch Linux or chainload Windows Boot Manager.
  • rEFInd is a UEFI boot manager that detects EFI loaders and presents them as selectable icons.
  • Grub2Win is a Windows application that helps install and configure GRUB.
  • EasyBCD is a Windows graphical interface for editing the BCD store. EasyBCD is not the same type of independent UEFI menu as rEFInd.

Microsoft explains that Windows stores boot options in the BCD store on both BIOS-based and EFI-based systems. On UEFI computers, firmware first launches an EFI application selected through firmware variables; Windows Boot Manager then uses its BCD configuration. See Microsoft’s documentation on Windows BCD settings for UEFI systems and Windows boot options and BCDEdit.

Dual boot means two operating systems. Multiboot means three or more operating systems or boot environments. Chainloading means that one boot manager hands control to another bootloader, such as GRUB launching Windows Boot Manager.

How can you check whether Windows uses UEFI or legacy BIOS?

Windows can show the firmware mode in the System Information utility:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Win+R.
  2. Type msinfo32 and press Enter.
  3. Find BIOS Mode.

UEFI systems normally use GPT disks and an EFI System Partition. Legacy BIOS systems, sometimes called BIOS or CSM mode, normally use MBR booting. People often call modern UEFI firmware “the BIOS,” but the distinction matters when installing or repairing a boot manager.

The safest general rule is to install both operating systems in the same firmware mode. Installing Windows in legacy mode beside Linux in UEFI mode, or the reverse, can prevent the expected boot menu from appearing. Grub2Win’s official site claims support for both UEFI and traditional BIOS/MBR systems, but that claim does not guarantee compatibility with every motherboard, storage controller, operating system, or Secure Boot configuration.

Which tool is best for Windows 11 and Windows 10 dual boot?

Windows Boot Manager is the best choice for Windows 11 and Windows 10 dual boot because the native BCD system can add, remove, rename, and select Windows installations without downloading another boot manager.

Microsoft documents Windows Boot Manager, BCD, BCDBoot, and BCDEdit as the underlying Windows startup mechanisms. The native approach is also easier to recover with Windows installation media or Windows Recovery Environment.

Seagate Portable 5TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, PS4, & Xbox - 1-Year Rescue Service (STGX5000400), Black
  • Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Windows Boot Manager strengths

  • Included with Windows.
  • Uses the native BCD store.
  • Supports Windows boot configurations in UEFI and legacy environments.
  • Can be repaired using Windows recovery media.
  • Does not add a third-party boot layer when two Windows installations are the only requirement.

Windows Boot Manager limitations

  • The menu is less visually flexible than GRUB or rEFInd.
  • Windows Boot Manager is not designed as a general-purpose Linux boot manager.
  • A Windows installation, firmware change, or boot repair can change which EFI entry is first.
  • Manual BCD editing can be intimidating without recovery media and a backup.

How do you add a missing Windows installation with BCDBoot?

Use Microsoft’s documented bcdboot workflow when a second Windows installation exists but does not appear in Windows Boot Manager.

  1. Open an elevated Command Prompt in the Windows installation that currently boots.
  2. Identify the volume containing the missing Windows installation:
diskpart
list volume
exit
  1. Locate the correct Windows directory. In the example below, the missing installation is on drive D:.
  2. Add the installation to the boot menu:
bcdboot D:Windows
  1. Restart the computer and confirm that both Windows entries appear.

Microsoft gives this procedure in its guide to repairing the boot menu on a dual-boot PC. Do not assume that the drive letter shown in normal Windows is the same drive letter shown from installation media or Windows Recovery Environment.

For inspection, use:

bcdedit /enum

The bcdedit command requires administrator privileges. The msconfig utility also provides a graphical way to choose the default entry and change the boot timeout. Microsoft warns that BitLocker and Secure Boot may need to be disabled or suspended before certain boot-option changes.

What is the best Windows-side GUI for Windows and Linux?

Grub2Win is the best Windows-side graphical choice for a Windows/Linux dual-boot setup when the reader wants to configure a GRUB-based menu without beginning the configuration inside Linux.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

According to the official Grub2Win site, Grub2Win supports Windows 7 through Windows 11, UEFI and traditional BIOS systems, and booting Windows, Linux, and other operating systems. The vendor also says that Grub2Win can read Windows BCD data and add entries for Windows installations. These are vendor compatibility claims, not an independent test of every distribution or hardware configuration.

Why choose Grub2Win?

  • It provides a Windows-based configuration workflow.
  • It is more suitable than EasyBCD when the main menu is intended to be GRUB-based and Linux must be a first-class entry.
  • It claims support for both UEFI and legacy BIOS/MBR systems.
  • It can boot Windows, Linux, and other operating systems according to its official documentation.

When should you avoid relying on Grub2Win?

Do not treat Grub2Win’s broad compatibility claim as proof that every encrypted disk, unusual filesystem, kernel layout, storage controller, or Secure Boot arrangement will work without adjustment. The native GRUB or systemd-boot setup created by a Linux distribution may be easier to maintain after Linux kernel updates.

Check the current installer and download instructions on the official Grub2Win site immediately before installation. The research available for this article does not establish a current release number, price, or commercial-use license for Grub2Win.

Is EasyBCD the best dual-boot manager?

EasyBCD is best for straightforward Windows BCD administration, not as a universal dual-boot solution. EasyBCD provides a graphical interface for viewing, adding, renaming, reordering, and deleting entries, changing the default operating system and timeout, and backing up or restoring the BCD store.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The EasyBCD documentation covers Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, Windows 11, Linux, BSD, UEFI, legacy boot, MBR updates, boot-sector updates, BCD backup and restore, and BCD reset workflows. NeoSmart’s official EasyBCD product page advertises support for modern and legacy Windows versions, including Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows 7, and Windows XP.

EasyBCD is a convenient option when the reader is uncomfortable with bcdedit and mainly needs to rename entries, set a default system, adjust the timeout, or back up the Windows boot configuration. EasyBCD should rank below native Linux boot tools or rEFInd when the reader needs automatic discovery of multiple EFI loaders.

EasyBCD documentation describes UEFI and legacy support, but EasyBCD features should not be assumed to behave identically in both firmware modes. Linux entries may involve chainloading or additional bootloader configuration. Check the current NeoSmart license and price before publication or purchase; the supplied official pages do not establish a current retail price.

When is rEFInd the better choice?

rEFInd is the better choice for technically confident users with several UEFI operating systems, Linux distributions, recovery environments, or separate-drive EFI loaders.

  • Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

The rEFInd project describes automatic detection of operating systems and Linux kernels. Automatic detection can reduce the need to rewrite a central menu configuration after every Linux kernel update. The project also documents launching Windows and recovery tools. See the rEFInd project page for its download and feature information.

rEFInd advantages

  • Graphical, icon-based UEFI boot screen.
  • Automatic discovery of EFI bootloaders and Linux kernels.
  • Useful for systems containing several operating systems on separate partitions or drives.
  • Can present Windows, Linux, and recovery loaders without making Windows BCD the central configuration.

rEFInd limitations

  • rEFInd is intended for UEFI systems rather than legacy BIOS-only computers.
  • Installation from Windows can be more involved than installing a Windows-side utility.
  • Automatic discovery can show duplicate, fallback, recovery, or unwanted entries.
  • Firmware updates and Windows repairs can change EFI boot order.
  • Encrypted installations and unusual filesystems may need manual configuration.

How does Secure Boot affect rEFInd?

rEFInd can work with Secure Boot, but the exact path depends on the signed boot chain. The rEFInd Secure Boot documentation explains approaches involving a shim, PreLoader, locally signed binaries, or enrolled keys. Debian’s rEFInd Secure Boot documentation provides additional implementation detail.

Microsoft describes Secure Boot as allowing only trusted, digitally signed startup software to run. Microsoft also says that Secure Boot certificates issued in 2011 begin expiring in 2026, so signing and firmware compatibility deserve special attention in a long-term boot setup. See Microsoft’s information on Windows 11 and Secure Boot and the Secure Boot certificate changes.

Should Linux users use GRUB or systemd-boot instead?

Linux-first users should usually begin with the GRUB or systemd-boot configuration supplied by their distribution. A standard Linux installer can place the native bootloader, detect Windows where supported, and maintain Linux kernel entries through normal package updates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Native Linux boot is often preferable when Secure Boot relies on the distribution’s signed shim or boot chain. Native boot is less attractive when the reader wants to configure everything from Windows, has a nonstandard multi-drive layout, or wants rEFInd’s automatic EFI-loader presentation.

Windows can later become the first firmware entry after a Windows update, firmware update, or Windows boot repair. That does not necessarily mean Linux was deleted. Check the motherboard’s one-time boot menu and UEFI boot order before reinstalling a Linux bootloader.

Is BootIt Bare Metal worth using?

BootIt Bare Metal is worth considering only when boot management and partition management are both required. The product is a specialist paid utility for advanced users managing complex partitions, multiple drives, or detailed boot items.

The official BootIt Bare Metal manual documents editing Windows BCD files and configuring detailed boot items. BootIt Bare Metal is overkill for a normal Windows 10/11 dual-boot menu, where Windows Boot Manager is already included, and it introduces additional risk because partition-management mistakes can cause data loss.

How should you prepare before installing a second operating system?

Preparation is more important than the choice of menu software because boot changes can affect partitions, firmware entries, Secure Boot, and BitLocker.

  1. Back up important files. Use a backup that can be restored independently of the computer’s internal boot menu.
  2. Create or verify Windows recovery media. Confirm that the recovery drive or Windows installation USB actually boots.
  3. Save the BitLocker recovery key. Do not begin boot or firmware changes until the key is available.
  4. Check BIOS Mode. Use msinfo32 and record whether the existing Windows installation uses UEFI or legacy BIOS.
  5. Use matching firmware modes. Install the second operating system in the same mode where possible.
  6. Prepare unallocated space or a separate drive. Do not install both operating systems into the same Windows partition.
  7. Suspend BitLocker before major changes. Resume protection after confirming that both operating systems boot.
  8. Disable Fast Startup when Linux will access Windows NTFS volumes. Windows hibernation can leave NTFS volumes in a state that Linux should not modify.
  9. Download installers and recovery tools from official sources.

Microsoft’s Windows Recovery Environment documentation covers Startup Repair, firmware settings, and recovery access. The same recovery guidance emphasizes retaining access to the BitLocker recovery key.

How do you set up Windows 10 and Windows 11 without third-party software?

Windows Boot Manager can normally handle Windows 10 and Windows 11 on separate partitions or drives.

Install and verify the second Windows version

Install the second Windows version into the prepared partition or drive. Microsoft’s dual-boot repair documentation describes installing the new operating system on a separate hard drive or partition.

After installation, Windows Boot Manager should display both operating systems. Use msconfig to set the default entry and timeout, or inspect the configuration with:

bcdedit /enum

If one installation is missing, identify its volume and run:

diskpart
list volume
exit
bcdboot D:Windows

Replace D: with the drive letter that actually contains the missing Windows directory.

How do you prepare for Windows and Linux dual boot?

Windows/Linux dual boot requires attention to firmware mode, partition space, Fast Startup, BitLocker, Secure Boot, and the Linux distribution’s bootloader.

  1. Back up Windows and create recovery media.
  2. Confirm UEFI or legacy mode.
  3. Save the BitLocker recovery key and suspend BitLocker as appropriate.
  4. Disable Windows Fast Startup if Linux will read Windows NTFS partitions.
  5. Shrink the Windows partition with Windows Disk Management or a suitable partitioning tool.
  6. Install Linux into unallocated space rather than the existing Windows partition.
  7. Prefer the distribution’s GRUB or systemd-boot unless a specific requirement favors Grub2Win or rEFInd.
  8. If Linux does not appear after installation, inspect UEFI boot order and the one-time boot menu before reinstalling anything.
  9. Use Windows recovery media and bcdboot to repair the Windows side when the Windows entry is the part that is missing.

Installing a third-party boot manager does not remove the need for a recovery plan. A boot menu can be present while an individual operating system, EFI System Partition, filesystem, or bootloader is damaged.

How do you repair a missing dual-boot option?

Repair the missing layer rather than reinstalling every bootloader. A missing menu entry may be a BCD problem, a UEFI boot-order problem, a damaged EFI boot file, or a Linux GRUB problem.

Recovery ladder

  1. Open the firmware’s one-time boot menu and select Windows Boot Manager or the Linux EFI entry directly.
  2. Enter Windows Recovery Environment.
  3. Run Startup Repair when the Windows boot files are damaged.
  4. Open an administrator Command Prompt.
  5. Use diskpart and list volume to identify the Windows partition.
  6. Rebuild or add Windows boot files with bcdboot D:Windows, replacing D: with the correct path.
  7. Restore the intended UEFI boot order after confirming the operating systems work.
  8. Repair the Linux bootloader using the distribution’s documented recovery method when the Linux side is damaged.

Do not delete EFI System Partitions or run repair commands at random. UEFI/GPT and legacy BIOS/MBR systems use different boot paths, and a command intended for one mode may not repair the other.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens when Windows updates change the boot order?

A Windows update, firmware update, or Windows boot repair can place Windows Boot Manager first in UEFI firmware order. The Linux installation may still be intact.

First select the Linux EFI entry from the firmware’s one-time boot menu. If Linux starts, restore the preferred firmware boot order or repair the distribution’s bootloader using its documentation. Inspecting the EFI System Partition is more appropriate than immediately reinstalling a third-party manager.

How do BitLocker and Secure Boot affect dual boot?

BitLocker and Secure Boot can both react to changes in the startup chain. Changing EFI entries, boot files, firmware settings, or Secure Boot state can cause BitLocker to request the recovery key; that is a recovery safeguard, not proof that the Windows installation is destroyed.

Before changing boot configuration, confirm that the BitLocker recovery key is accessible, suspend BitLocker where appropriate, and resume protection after successful testing. Never delete or casually bypass BitLocker protection.

Secure Boot may reject an unsigned or improperly signed EFI binary. A distribution’s signed shim may work without disabling Secure Boot, while a third-party manager such as rEFInd may require a shim, PreLoader, locally signed binaries, or enrolled keys. The exact requirement depends on the boot chain and firmware.

Boot setup Secure Boot consideration Practical implication
Windows Boot Manager Uses the Windows startup chain Usually the least complicated choice for Windows-only dual boot
Distribution GRUB or systemd-boot May use a distribution-provided signed shim or boot path Often the most integrated Linux-first arrangement
Grub2Win Compatibility depends on the installed GRUB and firmware configuration Verify the exact system before assuming Secure Boot will remain unchanged
rEFInd May need shim, PreLoader, local signing, or enrolled keys Powerful for UEFI multiboot but more technical
EasyBCD Edits Windows BCD; it does not make every Linux EFI loader signed Changing BCD does not solve an unsigned Linux bootloader problem

What are the important Windows 7 and Windows 8 limitations?

Windows 7 and Windows 8 can appear in software compatibility documentation without being good choices for a new dual-boot installation. Grub2Win’s official site claims Windows 7 through Windows 11 compatibility, and EasyBCD documentation includes Windows 7 and Windows 8 workflows. Those claims describe software operation, not current Microsoft security support, driver availability, or modern-hardware suitability.

Before installing Windows 7 or Windows 8, check whether the computer supports the required drivers, storage mode, graphics hardware, USB installer behavior, firmware mode, and Secure Boot settings. Newer UEFI computers may not provide the legacy compatibility that older Windows releases expect.

Windows 10 requires a separate warning in 2026: Microsoft says Windows 10 stopped receiving free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes after October 14, 2025. A dual-boot menu can start Windows 10, but a boot manager does not restore operating-system support or security updates.

Which tool should you choose?

If your situation is… Choose… Reason
You want Windows 10 and Windows 11 Windows Boot Manager Native, supported, and usually sufficient with bcdboot
You want Windows and Linux and prefer configuring from Windows Grub2Win Windows-side GUI for a GRUB-based menu
You only need to rename entries or change the Windows default and timeout EasyBCD or native msconfig/bcdedit EasyBCD adds convenience, while Windows already supplies the underlying tools
You have several UEFI operating systems or EFI loaders rEFInd Automatic EFI-loader discovery and graphical selection
You are installing Linux as the primary system Distribution GRUB or systemd-boot Better integration with Linux updates and signed boot paths
You need boot and partition management together BootIt Bare Metal Specialist feature set for advanced disk layouts

When is dual boot the wrong solution?

Dual boot is not always the most convenient or safest way to run a second operating system.

  • Use a virtual machine when the second operating system is needed for occasional applications, testing, or development and performance demands are moderate.
  • Use Windows Subsystem for Linux when the goal is Linux command-line software rather than a complete Linux desktop and kernel environment.
  • Use a separate physical SSD when you want to reduce partition-shrinking work or make one operating system easier to replace independently. Firmware boot order still matters.
  • Use a live USB when Linux is needed temporarily for troubleshooting, privacy, or a one-time task.
  • Use a remote computer when the second system already exists elsewhere and local boot complexity is not justified.
  • Use a portable external installation cautiously. UEFI firmware may not preserve an external drive as a permanent boot target, so the one-time boot menu may be more reliable.

Choose dual boot when native hardware performance, independent kernels, or full operating-system access matters enough to justify partition, recovery, and firmware management.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I dual boot Windows 10 and Windows 11 without software?

Yes. Windows Boot Manager normally handles Windows 10 and Windows 11 dual boot, and Microsoft’s BCDBoot utility can add a missing Windows installation with bcdboot D:Windows after you identify the correct volume.

What is the best boot manager for Windows and Linux?

Grub2Win is the best Windows-side GUI choice for Windows/Linux dual boot, while a Linux distribution’s native GRUB or systemd-boot is usually the most integrated Linux-first choice. rEFInd is better for technically confident users managing several UEFI operating systems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a boot manager fix a damaged operating system?

No. A boot manager selects an operating system, but it does not repair damaged system files, filesystems, partitions, or kernels. Use Windows Recovery Environment for Windows startup repair and the Linux distribution’s recovery procedure for a damaged Linux bootloader.

Will changing the boot manager trigger BitLocker recovery?

Changing boot files, EFI entries, firmware settings, or Secure Boot state can trigger a BitLocker recovery prompt. Save the recovery key first, suspend BitLocker before major changes where appropriate, and resume protection after verifying both operating systems boot.

Do Windows 7 and Windows 8 compatibility claims mean those systems are still supported?

No. A vendor’s claim that a tool runs on Windows 7 or Windows 8 describes technical software compatibility, not Microsoft security support, modern-driver availability, or hardware suitability. Check those factors separately before installing an older Windows release.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: choose Windows Boot Manager for Windows-to-Windows dual boot, Grub2Win when a Windows user wants a graphical Windows/Linux GRUB setup, and rEFInd for advanced UEFI multiboot. Use EasyBCD for convenient BCD editing, prefer native Linux GRUB or systemd-boot on Linux-first installations, and reserve BootIt Bare Metal for complex boot-and-partition work. Back up first, match firmware modes, save the BitLocker recovery key, and keep Windows recovery media available.
