GOG is the clearest default for buying DRM-free PC games you can keep, install offline and preserve. Its policy says buyers are not locked out of paid titles, Galaxy is optional, and offline installers are hosted on GOG.com. For indie and experimental releases, itch.io is the strongest alternative. FireFlower Games offers a smaller, curated catalog with Windows, Mac and Linux downloads, while Humble is worthwhile only when the specific product page clearly supplies a standalone DRM-free download.
“DRM-free” removes activation checks; it does not promise that multiplayer servers, third-party services or future operating systems will last forever. Permanent ownership therefore requires a habit: download the installer and related files, keep at least two copies under your control, document dependencies, and test an offline install.
Which DRM-free store should you use?
Choose the store according to the kind of game you want and how much preservation certainty you need. Store-wide policies are useful, but the individual product listing still controls whether a particular game has online, launcher or third-party requirements.

| itch.io | Indie, experimental and creator-led releases | itch.io says it does not impose platform DRM and lets creators provide files for users to download exactly as uploaded. | Every project is packaged independently; networking or platform-specific components may still be required. |
| FireFlower Games | Curated, story-rich discovery across desktop platforms | The store describes itself as DRM-free and provides Windows, Mac and Linux download links after purchase. | The catalog is smaller and curated, so availability and included files vary by title. |
| Humble Store | Deals and selected games that include direct downloads | Some product pages provide standalone DRM-free installers in addition to, or instead of, a key for another platform. | DRM-free status is title-specific. If you want the shortest answer, start with GOG DRM-free games. Move to itch.io DRM-free indie games for unusual or creator-led work, use FireFlower Games for curated multi-platform browsing, and treat Humble DRM-free games as a product-by-product decision.

What permanent ownership means in practice
A DRM-free purchase gives you files that can be installed without an activation check from the seller. That is materially different from a license that depends on a client signing in or verifying a purchase every time the game starts. It is also narrower than a guarantee that every part of the original experience will remain usable forever.
What DRM-free removes
- A mandatory store client for basic installation, when the listing supplies a standalone installer.
- Repeated ownership checks during startup or play.
- The risk that losing access to an account immediately prevents an offline installation of the files you already downloaded.
What DRM-free does not remove
- Online multiplayer servers, matchmaking or account services operated by the developer or publisher.
- Third-party components that a game was designed to contact, such as an online platform or network service.
- Operating-system, driver or hardware changes that can make an old build difficult to run.
- The need to download files while your purchase and the seller’s download access are available.
The practical definition of “permanent” is therefore local control plus documentation. You should possess the installer, patches and other purchased files, know the operating system they target, and understand which features require a live service.
GOG: the strongest all-round default
GOG is the most straightforward choice when your priority is a broad DRM-free catalog rather than a narrow niche. Its official About wording states: “you won’t be locked out of titles you paid for, or constantly asked to prove you own them – this is DRM-free gaming.” That policy directly addresses the ownership concern behind this guide.
How GOG delivers games
GOG’s developer documentation calls Galaxy “the optional client to install & update GOG games.” The important word is optional: you can use the client for convenience, but a supported game can also be obtained through the offline installers hosted on GOG.com. Download those installers instead of assuming that an account login or client library is your only copy.

Why it suits preservation
- Standalone installers can be copied to storage you control and used without keeping a client running.
- The store’s focus on DRM-free distribution makes it easier to identify purchases intended for offline installation.
- Classic PC titles benefit from a storefront that presents compatibility information and downloadable game files in one account library.
Checks to make before buying
Open the individual game page and read the feature information rather than relying only on the store-wide policy. A DRM-free installer can still launch an online-only mode, expect a multiplayer service, or include a feature that depends on a separate account. If local single-player play is your preservation goal, confirm that mode is available without those services.
itch.io: the best place for indie and experimental releases
itch.io is a marketplace for creator-led projects, so it is especially useful when you are looking for small, experimental or unconventional games that may not appear in larger catalogs. Its Creator FAQ answers the DRM question plainly: “No. itch.io lets users download the games exactly as you uploaded them.”
Why the model is valuable
Because creators upload and distribute their own files, a purchase may include a simple archive, an installer, multiple operating-system builds, or bonus material chosen by the developer. That flexibility is excellent for preservation when the project page clearly documents what is included.

There is no single packaging standard across every itch.io project. One game may be completely self-contained; another may expect a particular runtime, a network connection, or a platform-specific component. Read the project description, system requirements and download labels before purchase. Save the exact files offered at the time you buy, including manuals, patches and bonus downloads.

Questions to ask on an itch.io page
- Does the download include a Windows, Mac or Linux build that matches your computer?
- Is the game single-player offline, or does a feature require a server or account?
- Are updates delivered as new files that you should archive separately?
- Does the creator document required runtimes, frameworks or launch commands?
FireFlower Games: curated DRM-free, multi-platform discovery
FireFlower Games is a smaller retailer with a curated, story-oriented catalog. Its FAQ describes it as “a carefully curated, DRM-free digital game store for Windows, Mac, and Linux, based in Malmö, Sweden.” That makes it a useful destination when you want curation and explicit coverage of the three major desktop operating systems.
What to expect after purchase
The store provides download links for the available operating systems after purchase. Select the build you need, then archive every file supplied rather than downloading only the version you intend to install today. A Mac or Linux build can be valuable later if you change machines, provided the title still supports that operating system.
How it differs from GOG and itch.io
- Compared with GOG, FireFlower Games offers a narrower, more curated selection rather than a broad default catalog.
- Compared with itch.io, its store-level identity is more consistent, while itch.io projects can vary widely in packaging and documentation.
- Like both, it removes storefront DRM from the purchase, but it cannot keep an external multiplayer service running indefinitely.
Humble Store: useful only when the listing confirms a direct download
Humble can be attractive for discounts and bundles, but “sold by Humble” is not enough evidence that a game is DRM-free. Some listings provide a standalone installer; others provide a key for another platform. Those are different preservation situations.
How to verify a Humble purchase
- Open the exact product page, not just a bundle overview or an order receipt.
- Look for an explicit DRM-free or standalone-download statement.
- Confirm that the download is an installer or game archive you can keep, rather than only a key to redeem elsewhere.
- Check whether separate Windows, Mac or Linux files are supplied and whether multiplayer requires a service.
- After purchase, download the direct files immediately and store them with your receipt and product information.
If the page lists only a Steam key, it should not be counted as a DRM-free purchase for the purpose of this guide. The key may be convenient, but it does not give you the same standalone installer that a preservation workflow requires.

How to buy and preserve a DRM-free game
Use this workflow regardless of store. It turns a promise on a product page into a usable local archive.
- Choose a listing that states DRM-free or provides a standalone installer. Record the store, title, edition and purchase date in a simple text file or spreadsheet.
- Read the requirements and feature notes. Note the supported operating system, architecture if stated, required runtimes, controller notes and any online or multiplayer dependency.
- Download the installer immediately. Save the main installer, language packs, patches, manuals, soundtracks and bonus files included with the purchase.
- Keep the original filenames. Add a short readme of your own with the version, download date and source account. Do not rename files in a way that hides their version or purpose.
- Make a second copy. Copy the complete folder to an external hard drive or another storage device that you control. Two copies protect against a single drive failure; keep them in separate locations when practical.
- Document dependencies. Write down whether the game needs a live service, a launcher, a particular operating-system version or an additional component. Mark which features are expected to work offline.
- Perform an offline test. Disconnect the test computer from the network, install from your archived files and start the game. Test the saved-game path and the single-player content you care about.
- Recheck the archive periodically. Connect the storage only when needed, verify that files can still be read, and refresh a failing copy before it becomes your only copy.
How to test whether “offline” really works
An installer that runs without a login is a good start, but the complete test should cover the first launch and the specific features you intend to preserve.
Before disconnecting
- Install the game once while online so any required setup files are present.
- Run it, create a local save and close it normally.
- Note the location of save files and configuration files if the game displays that information.
- Copy the installer and any patches to the archive folder; do not rely on a temporary download directory.
While offline
- Disconnect Wi-Fi and unplug or disable the network connection.
- Install from the archived installer, not from a store client.
- Launch the game and verify that it does not request an ownership check.
- Load or create a local save.
- Try the single-player modes you expect to keep.
- Record any warning, missing component or disabled feature in the archive readme.
If the game starts but multiplayer is unavailable, that is not a contradiction. DRM-free concerns activation; it does not recreate a server that is no longer online.

Launcher dependency
A launcher is a program used to install or update a game. On GOG, Galaxy is optional according to the developer documentation, so use the offline installer when your aim is independent installation. For other stores, read the specific listing to determine whether a client is merely convenient or required.
Multiplayer dependency
Multiplayer may require matchmaking, an account or a server operated outside the installer. Save the offline single-player build even if you mainly play online, but label the multiplayer feature as service-dependent. Do not describe a game as fully preserved if the part you value exists only on a live service.
Operating-system dependency
A preserved installer is not the same as a guaranteed future-compatible application. Record the operating system named by the store and keep any supplied documentation. If you move to a different operating system, the files remain part of your archive even when additional compatibility work is needed.

Common mistakes and their fixes
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| You saved only a store shortcut or key. | No standalone game files were archived. | Return to the product page and download the direct installer if one is offered. A key for another platform is not the same thing. |
| The installer works, but the first launch asks for a login. | The title or a feature still depends on an online service. | Check the game’s feature notes, try the documented offline installer, and record which functions remain service-dependent. |
| The game launches offline but multiplayer does not. | Multiplayer relies on a live server or matchmaking service. | Keep the files for local content and mark multiplayer as unavailable without that service. |
| Your backup drive is unreadable. | Storage media can fail or become corrupted. | Replace the failed copy from the second archive, then create a new second copy and verify it by opening the installer. |
| You cannot remember which files belong to which edition. | The archive lacks purchase and version notes. | Add a readme containing the store, edition, download date, operating system and patch list beside the installer. |
Choosing a store by preservation priority
| Your priority | Most suitable starting point | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| One broad default for classic and modern PC games | GOG | Offline installer availability and any online-service features on the individual listing. |
| Indie, experimental or creator-uploaded projects | itch.io | Exactly which files the creator uploaded, supported operating systems and required components. |
| Curated story-rich games with several desktop builds | FireFlower Games | Which Windows, Mac and Linux downloads are included with the purchase. |
| A discounted title found through a Humble promotion | Humble Store, only if the listing confirms DRM-free files | That you receive a standalone installer rather than only a key for another platform. |
What not to use as proof of permanence
- A store’s catalog size: no authoritative store-wide catalog counts or ownership statistics establish preservation quality. The relevant evidence is the delivery method for the title you are buying.
- The word “download” alone: a download can be a client installer, a key redemption file or a standalone game archive. Identify which one you are receiving.
- A successful online launch: starting a game while connected does not prove it will start offline. Perform the offline test after archiving the files.
- A DRM-free label without feature notes: the label addresses activation restrictions, not servers, operating-system compatibility or future third-party services.
A practical archive format
Create one folder per game and keep the structure simple:
Game-Title/installer/patches/manuals-and-bonus/readme.txt
In readme.txt, record the store, edition, purchase date, installer filenames, supported operating system, patch order, save-file location and whether multiplayer or another feature needs a live service. This information is more useful than a vague note that a title is “backed up,” because it tells you how to reinstall it years later.
Bottom line for permanent ownership
For most buyers, GOG is the best DRM-free PC game store because its policy, optional Galaxy client and hosted offline installers align directly with offline ownership. itch.io is the better hunting ground for indie and experimental games, FireFlower Games is a strong curated alternative with Windows, Mac and Linux downloads, and Humble belongs in the shortlist only when an individual listing clearly provides a standalone DRM-free download. Whichever store you use, permanence comes from downloading the files, keeping two verified copies, documenting dependencies and testing the installation without a network connection.
