But the available evidence does not establish another service as a universally available AI-powered restaurant-ordering replacement. DoorDash itself has announced AI features for guided pizza customization and text-based restaurant ordering, while its ChatGPT integration is for groceries—not restaurant meals. Choose based on the restaurant and address, delivery or pickup needs, checkout total, and whether an AI feature is actually available to you.
What counts as ordering food with AI?
“AI ordering” can refer to several different steps: suggesting a restaurant, interpreting a menu, customizing an item, assembling a cart, or completing checkout. Those capabilities are not interchangeable. A conversational assistant may help find a dish without placing the order, while an ordering service may provide checkout without using AI.

- Discovery: an AI tool helps choose a restaurant or dish. DoorDash reported that 22% of U.S. consumers had used an AI tool such as ChatGPT or Google Gemini to help choose a restaurant. DoorDash described the 2026 survey as nationally representative, with more than 3,000 U.S. consumers and 500+ restaurant operators; the figure concerns choosing, not completing an order. Read DoorDash’s 2026 survey announcement.
- Menu guidance: an interface helps navigate options and customize a menu item. DoorDash announced a guided visual pizza-ordering experience on March 4, 2026, for choosing details such as size, crust, sauce, and toppings. The company reported more than 150 million pizza orders on its platform in 2025; that is DoorDash-reported platform volume, not a measure of AI usage. See DoorDash’s pizza feature announcement.
- Cart building: an assistant turns a request into a proposed basket. DoorDash announced a ChatGPT app in December 2025 that could turn recipe ideas into a grocery list and help order from local stores. It was initially available to select users, with broader expansion planned; the announcement describes grocery shopping, not restaurant delivery. Read the DoorDash and OpenAI announcement.
- Conversational restaurant ordering: a user describes a craving, receives suggestions, and can build an order in a conversation. DoorDash’s 2026 text-ordering announcement described restaurant search, suggested carts, remembered preferences, and checkout in the thread. It said U.S. users could apply to try the experience in beta, which does not establish general availability. Check DoorDash’s text-ordering announcement.
DoorDash also reported that 52% of diners were open to personalized AI recommendations based on past orders and that 15% fully trusted AI to prepare restaurant meals. Those figures came from a 2025 Dynata survey conducted for DoorDash from February 25 to March 3, 2025, among 1,504 U.S.-based people; they describe attitudes, not the features or reliability of any particular app. See DoorDash’s 2025 survey and methodology.
Which DoorDash alternatives can you use?
Apple’s U.S. App Store editorial list names Uber Eats and Grubhub as third-party ordering services and includes restaurant-specific apps such as Starbucks, McDonald’s, Chipotle, and Taco Bell. These are examples of ordering channels, not a ranking or guarantee of service at a particular address. The available evidence does not verify a specific AI ordering feature for Uber Eats, Grubhub, or the named restaurant apps, so treat them as ordering alternatives—not as confirmed AI-powered competitors. | Ordering route | Examples | Useful when | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Third-party marketplace | Uber Eats, Grubhub | You want to browse participating restaurants in one service. | Whether the restaurant serves your address, available delivery or pickup options, and the final checkout total. |
| Restaurant-owned app or website | Starbucks, McDonald’s, Chipotle, Taco Bell | You already know the restaurant or want to order through its own channel. | Whether that location accepts online orders and offers the service you need. Delivery arrangements vary by restaurant; no universal arrangement is established. |
| AI interface | DoorDash’s announced pizza and text-ordering experiences; its ChatGPT grocery app | You want help interpreting choices or building a cart through a conversational or guided interface. | Whether the feature is open to your account and location, whether it is for restaurant food or groceries, and where checkout and fulfillment happen. |
DoorDash for Merchants reported that 46% of consumers preferred ordering out through third-party apps and websites in its 2025 consumer-trends article. The same article reported an average of 4.6 third-party-app delivery orders per month. These are DoorDash-published consumer trend figures, not independently verified market totals. It also identified restaurant websites as consumers’ second-most-preferred online ordering channel after third-party apps. Read DoorDash for Merchants’ 2025 trends article.
How to choose the right option for an order
- Start with the restaurant and address. Check whether the specific restaurant appears in the service you are considering and will deliver to your location. The sources do not provide a cross-service coverage map, so availability must be checked in the app or on the restaurant’s ordering site.
- Choose the channel that supports your plan. Decide whether you need delivery or pickup, and confirm that the location offers it. Interest in combining services does not mean every app provides them: in DoorDash’s 2026 survey, 64% of consumers said they would prefer one app for delivery, pickup, and reservations. See DoorDash’s survey announcement.
- Compare the complete checkout total. For the same restaurant and order, review menu prices, delivery and service fees, membership conditions, tip, and the total before paying. No comparable current fee data establishes one service as universally cheapest.
- Verify what the AI feature actually does. Distinguish recommendations from menu help, cart building, and completed checkout. Check the feature’s current access terms in your account; an announcement, planned rollout, or beta application is not proof of general availability.
- Confirm dietary and allergen details with the restaurant. DoorDash’s 2026 survey said 59% of consumers actively seek allergen and dietary information when ordering or welcome it when available. That reports consumer interest; it does not certify menu information in any app. Read the survey announcement.
Can AI place a restaurant order for you?
Sometimes an AI-enabled ordering flow may help build or complete an order, but availability depends on the specific feature, account, location, and participating merchants. DoorDash’s text-ordering announcement describes a restaurant-ordering beta that could support checkout in a conversation; its ChatGPT app announcement instead concerns groceries and initially limited access to select users. Do not assume that asking a general AI assistant for a restaurant recommendation means it can submit an order or arrange delivery.

- A huge selection fulfilling all your needs - food and more!
- Easy ordering & real-time tracking
- Customize your orders
- Pickup & group order options
- Physical gift cards are delivered active via mail.
Before confirming any AI-built cart, review the restaurant, items, customizations, dietary notes, delivery or pickup details, and total. This is especially important when an order depends on allergen information: a recommendation interface is not a substitute for confirmation from the restaurant.
