For a client-side replacement for dom-to-image, start with SnapDOM if you want several output formats and reusable captures; choose modern-screenshot for a focused API with worker support. If you need a hosted service to capture a live website rather than export a component in the visitor’s browser, try ScreenshotNeo first: it removes known cookie banners, popups and chat widgets before capture, and bills only clean shots.

The right alternative depends less on which library is newest than on what “screenshot” means for your job. A DOM-to-image library reconstructs a selected page element inside a browser. Puppeteer and Playwright control a browser to capture the rendered page. A server renderer or hosted API moves rendering away from the visitor’s browser. These approaches solve related, but not interchangeable, problems.

Choose by rendering job, not by package name

Before replacing a dependency, decide whether you need an image of one existing component or a screenshot of a website after it has loaded, authenticated and reached the right state. That choice determines which class of tool can produce the result.

  • Export a component in the current page: use a DOM capture library such as SnapDOM, modern-screenshot or html-to-image.
  • Reproduce a page as a real browser renders it: use Puppeteer or Playwright, which control a browser page and can handle navigation and application state.
  • Create an image from structured input on a server: consider Satori/@vercel/og, accepting its narrower CSS support.
  • Capture a URL without operating a browser fleet: use a hosted screenshot API such as ScreenshotNeo.

This distinction also explains why html2canvas is not a literal screenshot tool. Its documentation says it builds an image from DOM information rather than taking an actual screenshot. It runs in the browser and cannot bypass content-policy restrictions; cross-origin images can taint the canvas. DOM-cloning tools that render through SVG foreignObject generally lean more on the browser’s CSS engine, but still encounter browser, CORS, font and SVG constraints.

Best options at a glance

Option Best fit Rendering model and trade-off
1. ScreenshotNeo Hosted website screenshots from a URL, without maintaining browser workers. Hosted screenshot API and MCP server. It captures a website, not an arbitrary element already mounted in a visitor’s page.
SnapDOM Client-side component exports that need multiple formats or a plugin pipeline. DOM capture with reusable capture objects; browser resource and compatibility limits still apply.
modern-screenshot A focused DOM-to-image API, especially for repeated captures or worker use. DOM capture with reusable contexts and documented web-worker mode; partial embedding may fail because of CORS.
html-to-image A familiar migration path from dom-to-image-style patterns. Browser-side DOM cloning and SVG foreignObject rendering; it shares the resource and browser limitations of that approach.
Puppeteer Automated screenshots in controlled Chromium, including pages with navigation and application state. Real-browser capture, with the operational burden of browser binaries, process isolation, memory, concurrency and updates.
Playwright Screenshot automation that needs Chromium, Firefox or WebKit, or belongs in an end-to-end suite. Browser-controlled capture; production use requires managing browser installations and runtime resources.
Satori / @vercel/og Server-side image generation from JSX-like input, including cases where no user browser exists. Independent server rendering with a narrower CSS subset than a full browser.

1. ScreenshotNeo — best hosted API alternative

Use ScreenshotNeo when your input is a website URL and you want a hosted service to return an image or PDF instead of running browser automation yourself. Its API accepts a URL in one GET request and can return PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. It also offers an MCP server for AI clients, with take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools.

Its cleaning and billing behavior are useful when capturing public pages: it accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets. Each step can be disabled. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing; the response identifies the page verdict and whether the request was billed in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Those details make it possible to distinguish a clean result from a blocked or unsuccessful capture rather than treating every response as an image success.

The service has plans from a free allowance of 1,000 shots per month with no card, to paid options beginning at $5 for 3,000 shots; yearly billing gives two months free. Every feature is available on every plan. Check the current plan details before deployment if your expected volume or billing cadence matters.

For an element already rendered in a user’s page, a client-side library remains the direct fit. For a URL capture job where you do not want to install, isolate and update browser workers, ScreenshotNeo is the hosted option to try first.

2. SnapDOM — strongest all-purpose client-side choice

SnapDOM describes itself as a dependency-free DOM capture engine. It can export a captured subtree as SVG, PNG, JPG, WebP, Canvas or Blob, and supports plugin-defined formats. Its documented support for embedded styles, pseudo-elements and fonts, plus a reusable capture object, suits social cards, dashboards, design previews and “export this component” controls where one capture may be needed in several forms.

Account for the limits before making it the default. External images need to be CORS-accessible; Safari may fall back from WebP to PNG; custom JavaScript FontFace() handling can require a workaround; and Safari paths that embed fonts or background images can be slower. The project’s own 2026 repository benchmark for a 1,200×800 “Page View” reports 17.5 ms for current SnapDOM, 178.0 ms for html2canvas and 429.0 ms for html-to-image. Those are vendor-reported figures from its test setup, not an independent cross-browser comparison; reproduce them on your own DOM and target browsers before using them to predict production performance.

3. modern-screenshot — focused API with reusable contexts

modern-screenshot is a maintained fork of html-to-image. Its documented methods include domToPng, domToJpeg, domToWebp, domToSvg, domToDataUrl, domToBlob, domToPixel, domToImage and domToCanvas. It also documents reusable contexts and a web-worker mode for repeated captures.

Pick it when that focused method set matches your output needs, particularly if you are moving from html-to-image or dom-to-image patterns and want to avoid a wholesale change in rendering model. Its README warns that partial embedding can fail because of CORS, and identifies CSS-counter cloning as an unresolved limitation. Test representative content, not only a simple text-and-background card.

4. html-to-image — the familiar migration path

html-to-image remains a practical option for teams already using its API shape or migrating from dom-to-image. Like SnapDOM and modern-screenshot, it belongs to the browser-side family that serializes or clones DOM content and uses SVG foreignObject rendering. That can follow browser CSS behavior more closely than a full JavaScript repaint, but it does not remove the need to handle external resources, fonts, browser differences and SVG constraints.

Choose it for continuity when its documented output and behavior meet the use case. Choose another library when a specific format, reusable-capture model, worker feature or tested compatibility requirement is decisive. A familiar API alone is not evidence that a complex page will render identically across browsers.

5. Puppeteer and Playwright — when you need a real browser

Puppeteer for controlled Chromium

Puppeteer’s Page.screenshot() captures a page and returns a base64 string or Uint8Array, with screenshot options for output configuration. It is a stronger fit than a DOM export when the job includes navigating to a URL, executing JavaScript, waiting for app state, authenticating, setting a viewport or capturing a full page. The cost is operating the browser runtime: binaries, isolation, memory, concurrency and updates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Playwright for browser coverage and test workflows

Playwright is a good fit when capture needs Chromium, Firefox or WebKit, or when screenshots are one part of a broader end-to-end automation suite. In production it also requires managed browser installations and runtime resources. For more reproducible output, pin the browser build and explicitly set viewport, fonts, locale and device scale.

Neither automation framework is automatically a better component-export library. They solve the broader problem of driving a browser, and are usually excessive when the only task is exporting one element from an already-open page.

6. Satori / @vercel/og — generate before a browser exists

Satori is a server-oriented way to generate images from JSX-like input without relying on a visitor’s live browser. It fits deterministic social cards and edge or server rendering when the image should exist before a browser session. Its key trade-off is a narrower CSS subset than a full browser, so it is not a drop-in renderer for arbitrary website markup.

How to choose: seven practical checks

  1. Fidelity: decide whether DOM reconstruction is sufficient or whether you need pixels from a controlled, real browser.
  2. Runtime: choose between the existing browser page, a self-hosted browser worker, a server renderer or a hosted API.
  3. State: distinguish a static component from a page that needs navigation, authentication or JavaScript state.
  4. Output: verify the exact need—PNG/JPEG/WebP, SVG, canvas/blob, PDF or editable/vector format—and whether plugins are involved.
  5. Resources: test CORS, fonts, canvas tainting, SVG foreignObject, Safari behavior and target browser support.
  6. Operations: weigh client bundle and browser cost against browser binaries, memory, concurrency and service fees.
  7. Maintenance: verify current release activity and compatibility with the CSS, layout and browser versions your page actually uses.

Performance, reliability and cost in production

A library can avoid a server-side browser fleet, but capture still consumes work in the browser page and depends on that page’s access to styles, fonts and images. A reusable capture or worker context can matter when exporting the same DOM repeatedly. Measure representative components—including external assets and custom fonts—on the browsers you support, and compare output correctness as well as elapsed time.

A browser automation worker gives you control over navigation and page state, but your team must provision and maintain its runtime, manage concurrency and decide how to isolate jobs. A hosted API shifts those operational tasks to a provider and introduces service costs and data-handling questions. Before sending production URLs or HTML to a provider, check its authentication model, geographic processing, data handling, rate limits and current pricing. No single performance ranking across these rendering models is established here; the SnapDOM figures above are a vendor benchmark, not a universal baseline.

Troubleshooting common capture failures

  • External image missing or canvas export fails: the image host may not permit cross-origin use. Confirm CORS access or use assets available to the capture page; html2canvas specifically warns that cross-origin images can taint the canvas.
  • Fonts differ from the page: font loading or embedding may not have completed, or the capture path may have a font limitation. Ensure the desired fonts are loaded before capture and test the exact browser and library; SnapDOM documents a JavaScript FontFace() workaround for some cases.
  • CSS appears different: check whether the library’s browser-side SVG capture supports the styles in question. If the required result depends on actual page rendering, move to Puppeteer or Playwright rather than assuming another DOM serializer will match.
  • Only Safari output differs: check format fallback and resource-embedding behavior. SnapDOM notes Safari WebP fallback to PNG and slower paths when embedding fonts or background images.
  • CSS counters are absent in modern-screenshot: its README lists CSS-counter cloning as a limitation. Avoid relying on that rendering path for counter-dependent output unless your own test confirms it works.
  • A page capture is blocked, blank or incomplete: distinguish a DOM component-export issue from a website navigation or bot-check issue. If the task requires page navigation and state, use browser automation or a URL screenshot service designed to report capture verdicts.

Or skip the browser setup

For a hosted URL capture, ScreenshotNeo’s API accepts one GET request. This cURL example saves a WebP capture of Stripe; replace the URL with the page you want and provide your API key. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a DOM-to-image library capture an element that is off-screen?

The material here does not establish a universal off-screen capture guarantee across these libraries. Verify the specific library’s current behavior with the element and browser you intend to support.

Is SnapDOM faster than every alternative?

No. The available 2026 numbers are SnapDOM’s own benchmark for one 1,200×800 Page View case, not a neutral test across browsers, workloads and candidates.

Does switching libraries guarantee identical output?

No. These tools use different rendering approaches and inherit constraints from browser support, CSS, fonts, SVG behavior and cross-origin resources. Validate the actual content and target browsers before switching.
