For most modern TVs, start with 4:3, keep integer or pixel-preserving scaling enabled, and disable any television-wide stretching or “vivid” processing. Choose Pixel Perfect when sharp, square pixels matter more than the familiar console framing, or CRT Filter when you want scan lines and a softer old-TV appearance. Use a controller whose buttons sit in the same physical positions as an SNES pad; on Nintendo Switch, custom mappings are available at System Settings → Controllers and Sensors → Change Button Mapping.

Nintendo’s official SNES presentation options are a useful baseline because they expose the three meaningful trade-offs: original-style framing, square-pixel geometry and CRT simulation. The best choice depends on whether you value historical appearance, crisp edges or a softer display character.

Recommended settings at a glance

Priority Display mode Aspect-ratio choice Controller approach
Familiar original-console look 4:3 Keep the game in its 4:3 frame; do not fill 16:9 SNES-style physical layout
Sharp, clean pixel art Pixel Perfect Use square-pixel presentation and integer scaling where available SNES-style layout with positional mapping
Soft CRT character CRT Filter Preserve the original frame while applying scan lines SNES-style layout; avoid hotkeys that can be pressed accidentally
Switch accessibility or preference Any of the three modes available in the software Leave the display at its native aspect ratio Use Switch button remapping under Controllers and Sensors
Desktop, mobile or Raspberry Pi emulation Pixel Perfect or 4:3 as a starting point Turn off automatic 16:9 stretching Map by physical button position before adding convenience shortcuts

If you only want one dependable preset, use 4:3 with the cleanest available scaling and an SNES-style pad. Change to Pixel Perfect or CRT Filter after you have seen how your display handles the game.

What Nintendo’s three display modes actually change

4:3: the safest all-purpose choice

The 4:3 option recreates the broad proportions associated with the original SNES presentation, with a slight horizontal stretch compared with a strict square-pixel image. It is the right starting point when you remember the game from a television and want the scene composition to feel familiar.

4:3 does not mean the image must occupy every available pixel on a widescreen panel. A 16:9 television can show a centered 4:3 picture with vertical bars at the sides. Those bars are preferable to stretching the game across the entire screen, which changes the relative width of characters, rooms and interface elements.

Pixel Perfect: geometry before nostalgia

Pixel Perfect favors square pixel geometry and a crisp, grid-like image. Nintendo describes it this way: “Pixel Perfect: Each pixel is a perfect square, so you see the games exactly as designed.” On a modern flat panel, this can make individual edges look exceptionally clear, but it may also produce a smaller visible image or more obvious hard pixel steps than the 4:3 presentation.

Use this mode when you want predictable geometry for screenshots, close inspection of sprite work or a clean digital appearance. It is also a good choice when your television’s own scaling creates softness or uneven blur.

CRT Filter: scan lines and a softer presentation

CRT Filter adds scan lines and a presentation intended to resemble an older television. The filter softens the hard digital grid and can make transitions and large areas of color feel less stark. It is a stylistic choice, not a resolution upgrade.

Choose CRT Filter if you like the visual character of a CRT and do not mind that fine details are less clinical than in Pixel Perfect mode. If the scan lines look too dark, noisy or distracting at your viewing distance, return to 4:3 or Pixel Perfect rather than compensating with excessive television sharpness.

How to set up the picture on a modern TV

  1. Set the game or console to 4:3, Pixel Perfect or CRT Filter. Start with 4:3 unless you already know you prefer another presentation.
  2. Disable forced widescreen. In the television or display menu, use the option that preserves the source aspect ratio. Names vary by manufacturer, so look for labels such as “Original,” “Just Scan,” “Screen Fit,” “Aspect,” or “4:3.”
  3. Turn off picture modes that reshape the image. Motion interpolation, overscan, zoom and aggressive edge enhancement can make a low-resolution game look unstable or artificially sharp. Use the display’s game mode if it prevents extra processing, but do not assume every “Game” preset preserves aspect ratio automatically.
  4. Check the entire frame. Confirm that the top, bottom and side edges of the game are visible and that circles, letters and character proportions do not look unusually wide.
  5. Adjust brightness only after geometry is correct. A dark CRT-style filter can tempt you to raise the backlight or contrast too far. Make one change at a time so you can tell whether the filter or the television is responsible for the result.

Do not judge a mode from a single menu screen. Walk through an outdoor area, an interior room and a scene with text. Different colors and edge patterns reveal scaling artifacts that may not be visible on a uniform background.

Choosing between 4:3, Pixel Perfect and CRT Filter

Question Choose 4:3 Choose Pixel Perfect Choose CRT Filter
Do you want the familiar console framing? Yes Not the main goal Yes, with a simulated old-TV look
Are perfectly square pixels your priority? Less important Yes No
Do you want visible scan lines? No No Yes
Will several people watch from different distances? Usually easiest to share Can look very sharp up close May be too subdued at a distance
Are you troubleshooting a distorted image? Best baseline Useful comparison Delay until geometry is correct

There is no universal “correct” filter. The important technical decision is preserving the original 4:3 relationship unless you deliberately prefer a stretched picture. Filter choice can then follow your taste and room lighting.

Settings for Nintendo’s retro hardware and Switch

SNES Classic-style menus

Nintendo’s SNES Classics support documentation lists the three display modes described above. Open the system’s display or settings menu, select one mode, then return to the game and inspect both gameplay and text. If you switch between modes often, compare them with the same scene so your judgment is not affected by a different room, camera distance or brightness level.

Switch button remapping

On Nintendo Switch, assign a different function to a compatible controller button through:

  1. Open System Settings.
  2. Select Controllers and Sensors.
  3. Choose Change Button Mapping.
  4. Select the controller and the button you want to change.
  5. Assign the replacement function, review the on-screen summary and save.

Nintendo states that custom mappings are saved on the Switch system. That is useful when you alternate between a standard controller and a retro-style pad, but remember to review the active profile before another game: a remap made for A Link to the Past can affect other software until you change it back.

Keep remaps easy to remember

Use remapping to accommodate a different physical layout, a preferred dominant-hand arrangement or a controller with a difficult button. Avoid moving several actions at once unless you record the new layout. A map that feels comfortable in a short session can become confusing when you return weeks later.

Controller layout: preserve SNES muscle memory first

A Link to the Past was designed around the compact SNES controller arrangement: a directional pad, four face buttons and two shoulder buttons. The most reliable setup on any platform is therefore positional. Map the emulator or console’s corresponding actions to the buttons occupying the same physical locations as those on an SNES pad.

Why physical position matters

During combat, menu navigation and rapid movement, your hands rely on distance and direction as much as on labels. A modern controller may print different symbols or place its letters in a different order, but preserving the old physical relationship reduces the need to translate each press mentally.

When a modern layout is better

Change the layout when the original arrangement causes a practical problem: a small controller may cramp your hands, a particular button may be difficult to reach, or accessibility needs may favor a different finger assignment. Make the smallest change that solves the problem, then test movement, menus and a short combat sequence before committing to it.

Hotkeys and secondary functions

Emulators often offer save-state, fast-forward, screenshot and menu shortcuts. Add them only after the game controls feel natural, and place them on buttons that cannot be pressed accidentally during normal play. A hotkey that interrupts gameplay is more damaging than one that takes an extra second to reach.

Using an 8BitDo SN30 Pro

The official 8BitDo FAQ documents SN30 Pro support for Nintendo Switch, Windows 10, macOS, Android and Raspberry Pi, and documents connection by USB. That makes it a practical SNES-style option when you play across more than one system. Check the controller’s current mode and the host system’s pairing or USB instructions before launching the game.

Switch setup

  1. Connect or pair the SN30 Pro according to the controller’s instructions and confirm that Switch lists it as an active controller.
  2. Launch the game and verify that the directional pad, face buttons and shoulder buttons respond in the expected physical positions.
  3. If a button is uncomfortable or reversed for your preferred grip, use System Settings → Controllers and Sensors → Change Button Mapping.
  4. Save the mapping and test it in a safe area before beginning a difficult section.

Windows, macOS, Android and Raspberry Pi

On desktop, mobile or Raspberry Pi emulators, first select the SN30 Pro as the active input device. Map by physical position rather than by the symbols printed on the controller, then test every face and shoulder input. The exact menu names differ by emulator, so avoid copying a layout from another program without checking which action each field represents.

Steam’s Nintendo button-mapping mode

The 8BitDo FAQ also documents a “Nintendo button mapping” mode for Steam use. Enable that mode only if you want the controller’s Nintendo-style labeling and Steam’s interpretation to agree. If the on-screen prompts and your physical buttons do not match, inspect both Steam’s controller profile and the emulator’s own mapping; changing both at once can hide which layer caused the mismatch.

Original hardware on a 16:9 television

If you are connecting an original SNES through a modern television, the display may perform the scaling rather than the console. Preserve the source’s 4:3 relationship in the television or in a dedicated retro HDMI upscaler. A scaler can provide more predictable integer scaling and aspect-ratio controls, but the correct setting is still the one that keeps the game’s proportions intact.

Use the same diagnostic checks as with an emulated copy: a circular or rounded object should not appear noticeably wider, text should remain legible, and the full game area should be visible without zoom cropping. If the television offers only a stretched “wide” mode, choose the setting that adds side bars instead.

Troubleshooting common problems

The picture looks too wide

  • Confirm that the television is not set to 16:9 stretch, zoom or panoramic mode.
  • Return the game to 4:3 and compare it with Pixel Perfect. If both look wide, the display—not the filter—is changing the aspect ratio.
  • Check whether an intermediate receiver, capture device or scaler has its own aspect-ratio setting.

Pixels look uneven or blurry

  • Try Pixel Perfect and disable television edge enhancement.
  • Use integer scaling if the software or scaler provides it; non-integer enlargement can make some pixel rows appear softer than others.
  • Compare the same scene at the same viewing distance. Moving closer can make normal pixel edges look like a scaling fault.

The CRT Filter is too dark or distracting

  • Switch temporarily to 4:3 to separate the filter’s effect from the television’s brightness settings.
  • Reduce room glare before increasing contrast or backlight.
  • If scan lines remain visually tiring, use Pixel Perfect for a clean image rather than stacking additional sharpening effects.

A controller button performs the wrong action

  • Check the active Switch remap profile or emulator controller profile.
  • Map one button at a time and test immediately.
  • On Steam, check whether Nintendo button-mapping mode is changing the labels before editing the emulator’s own bindings.

Inputs feel inconsistent

  • Reconnect the controller by the documented method and confirm that the host sees only one active controller profile.
  • Remove duplicate bindings that may send two actions from one physical press.
  • Do not judge responsiveness from an unmeasured impression as proof of a specific latency figure; verify the mapping and connection first.

Three practical presets

Preset 1: “As I remember it”

  • Display: 4:3.
  • Scaling: preserve the original frame with no widescreen stretch.
  • Filter: none, unless the display’s clean image is uncomfortably harsh.
  • Controller: SNES-style physical arrangement.

This is the best first setup for a shared living-room session or for moving between original hardware and a modern system.

Preset 2: “Clean pixel art”

  • Display: Pixel Perfect.
  • Scaling: integer or pixel-preserving scaling where available.
  • Filter: no CRT simulation and minimal television sharpening.
  • Controller: positional mapping on a retro-style pad or a carefully remapped modern controller.

Use this when you want the most explicit pixel grid and the least added texture.

Preset 3: “CRT atmosphere”

  • Display: CRT Filter.
  • Aspect ratio: keep the 4:3 frame.
  • Television processing: avoid extra sharpening or motion effects that compete with the filter.
  • Controller: familiar SNES-style layout with secondary hotkeys kept away from regular play.

This preset prioritizes visual character over a perfectly sharp digital image.

A quick decision checklist

  • Are the game’s proportions natural rather than stretched?
  • Can you read text without leaning toward the screen?
  • Do you prefer crisp square pixels, a familiar 4:3 image or scan lines?
  • Are the face and shoulder buttons in positions your hands expect?
  • Have you tested the entire control set, including menus and shoulders?
  • If you remapped Switch controls, did you save the profile and note what changed?
  • If you use an SN30 Pro, did you verify the host platform, connection method and any Steam Nintendo button-mapping mode?

Once those checks pass, stop changing settings. A consistent 4:3 image and a predictable controller layout matter more than chasing a single universally “correct” filter.
