There is no single safest ETF when growth stocks sell off. The right choice depends on how you want to reduce risk: VFMV uses a broad minimum-volatility approach, VDC concentrates on consumer staples, VHT concentrates on health care, DGRO emphasizes companies that have grown dividends, and XSHD combines high dividends and low volatility within small-cap stocks. These funds can reduce sensitivity to an economic slowdown or a technology-led selloff, but all remain equity investments that can lose substantial value.
What makes an ETF defensive?
“Defensive” describes a portfolio construction choice, not a guarantee against losses. A defensive equity ETF usually seeks one or more of the following characteristics:
- Essential-demand businesses: Consumer staples and many health-care services sell products people continue to need during weaker economic conditions.
- Lower measured volatility: A minimum-volatility index selects stocks that have historically moved less than the broad market.
- Dividend quality or growth: Companies with a record of increasing dividends may have durable cash flows and more mature business models.
- Income-oriented selection: High-dividend screens can shift a portfolio toward established companies, although they can also increase interest-rate and value-stock exposure.
These features are not interchangeable. A sector fund can be defensive relative to a technology-heavy portfolio while still being highly concentrated. A minimum-volatility fund may hold several sectors but can develop unintended tilts. A dividend fund can provide income yet fall when interest rates rise or when dividend-paying companies cut payouts.
Every fund below is an ETF holding stocks. Net asset value can decline, market prices can trade below that value, and a defensive label does not make an equity fund equivalent to Treasury bills, high-quality bonds or cash.

Quick comparison of the five candidates
| ETF | Primary construction | Diversification and main risk | Documented figures | Potential role |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF (VDC) | Tracks the MSCI US Investable Market Consumer Staples 25/50 Index. | Concentrated in one sector; consumer-staples valuation and company-specific risk remain. | 0.09% expense ratio, reported by Vanguard as of December 19, 2025. Yield, beta and standard deviation were not stated in the supplied issuer information. | A focused defensive-sector allocation when you specifically want staples exposure. |
| Vanguard Health Care ETF (VHT) | Tracks the MSCI US Investable Market Health Care 25/50 Index. | Concentrated in health care; patent expirations, regulation, clinical outcomes and market volatility can affect holdings. | Expense ratio, yield, beta and standard deviation were not stated in the supplied issuer information. | A health-care sector allocation with potential secular growth, but not a low-risk substitute for a diversified fund. |
| Vanguard U.S. Minimum Volatility ETF (VFMV) | Uses a minimum-volatility strategy seeking long-term capital appreciation. | Broader than a single-sector fund, but sector overweights and underweights can change performance; the screen is backward-looking. | Current expense ratio, yield, beta and standard deviation were not stated in the supplied issuer information. | The broadest defensive construction in this group when the goal is to reduce portfolio volatility rather than make a sector bet. |
| iShares Core Dividend Growth ETF (DGRO) | Tracks U.S. stocks with a history of growing their dividends. | Multi-sector portfolio, but dividend and value tilts can become rate-sensitive. | 0.08% expense ratio; 2.07% 30-day SEC yield; 10.45% three-year standard deviation; 0.67 three-year equity beta, all published by BlackRock iShares with a September 30, 2026 date except the prospectus fee date. The page listed 391 holdings as of October 15, 2026. | A diversified quality-and-income approach for investors who want defensive characteristics without a single-sector mandate. |
| Invesco S&P SmallCap High Dividend Low Volatility ETF (XSHD) | Linked to the S&P SmallCap 600 Low Volatility High Dividend Index, which measures the 60 least-volatile high-dividend stocks in the S&P SmallCap 600. | Small-cap businesses have distinct operating, financing and liquidity risks; the portfolio is narrower than a broad-market ETF. | Expense ratio, yield, beta and standard deviation were not stated in the supplied issuer information. | A satellite position for investors who deliberately want small-cap income and low-volatility screening. |
The published DGRO statistics illustrate how risk data should be read: a 0.67 beta and 10.45% three-year standard deviation describe a specified historical period ending September 30, 2026. They are not promises about the next selloff. The same discipline applies to any future figures you check for the other funds.
VFMV: the broad minimum-volatility option
How it is built
Vanguard describes VFMV as seeking long-term capital appreciation through a minimum-volatility strategy. Instead of choosing one defensive industry, the strategy selects and weights stocks according to historical risk relationships. That can produce a portfolio with lower observed volatility than the broad market, but it does not eliminate exposure to equities.
Why it can fit a growth-stock selloff
A portfolio dominated by high-growth technology shares may have large exposures to long-duration valuations, crowded positions and a common market factor. A minimum-volatility portfolio can diversify those exposures across businesses whose historical price movements have been less extreme. It is therefore the most natural candidate in this group if your objective is broad risk reduction rather than a particular sector.

Limitations to check
- Backward-looking screen: Stocks that were stable in the measurement period can become volatile after an earnings shock, regulatory change or recession.
- Sector drift: Vanguard notes that sector overweights and underweights can affect performance. A “neutral” minimum-volatility label does not mean market-capitalization sector weights.
- Relative, not absolute, protection: If investors sell stocks broadly, VFMV can decline even if it falls less than a growth index.
- Potential rebound lag: Portfolios with lower volatility can participate less in a sharp rally led by high-beta growth shares.
Before buying, read the current prospectus for the expense ratio, holdings, turnover and index methodology. The supplied issuer description does not state a current rebalance schedule, so do not assume a monthly, quarterly or annual cadence without verifying it.
VDC: consumer staples as a focused defensive bet
What the index covers
VDC is an exchange-traded share class of Vanguard Consumer Staples Index Fund and seeks to track the MSCI US Investable Market Consumer Staples 25/50 Index. Consumer-staples companies generally sell food, beverages, household products and other necessities. Demand for essentials is often less sensitive to the economic cycle than demand for discretionary goods.

Cost and concentration
Vanguard reported a 0.09% expense ratio for VDC as of December 19, 2025. That is a low ongoing fund cost, but the fee does not measure valuation risk or the effect of a single company’s disappointing results. Because the fund is sector-specific, a problem affecting retailers, branded-goods companies, input costs or consumer spending patterns can hurt the entire portfolio at once.
When VDC makes sense
- You have an unusually large technology or cyclical allocation and want a direct counterweight.
- You accept that sector concentration can produce larger tracking differences from the overall U.S. market.
- You are comfortable evaluating whether staples stocks already trade at defensive-sector valuations that leave little room for disappointment.
VDC is not the default choice for an investor who wants the lowest possible portfolio volatility. It is a deliberate consumer-staples position.

Index and business exposure
Vanguard says VHT seeks to track the MSCI US Investable Market Health Care 25/50 Index. Health care combines relatively resilient demand with businesses that can grow through innovation, procedure volumes and new treatments. That combination can make the sector attractive when investors are reducing exposure to economically sensitive growth stocks but still want long-term growth potential.
Risks that distinguish health care
Vanguard warns that expiring patents can affect a company’s future profitability. Drug pricing, reimbursement policy, clinical results, litigation and regulation can also create company-specific or industry-wide shocks. A health-care ETF spreads those risks across holdings, but it cannot remove them.
Vanguard also notes that significant market volatility can cause ETF shares to trade away from net asset value. This is a reminder to use limit orders and check the bid/ask spread, especially during fast markets or outside the most liquid trading hours.

How to use VHT
VHT is best viewed as a sector allocation, not as a complete defensive portfolio. Pairing it with broad-market or minimum-volatility exposure can reduce the consequences of a single health-care subsector falling out of favor. The supplied issuer information does not state a current expense ratio, yield or rebalance schedule; verify those items in the latest fund documents.

Selection logic
The iShares Core Dividend Growth ETF seeks to track an index composed of U.S. stocks with a history of growing their dividends. Dividend growth is different from simply buying the highest yield. A company must have demonstrated distribution growth, which can favor businesses with recurring cash flow and disciplined balance sheets.
Published data and what it means
BlackRock iShares published a 0.08% expense ratio, a 2.07% 30-day SEC yield, a 10.45% three-year standard deviation and a 0.67 three-year equity beta. These figures were dated September 30, 2026, except for the prospectus fee date. The same page listed 391 holdings as of October 15, 2026.
- SEC yield: The 2.07% figure is a standardized recent income measure, not a guaranteed distribution or total return.
- Standard deviation: The 10.45% value describes historical dispersion of returns over the stated three-year period.
- Beta: A 0.67 beta indicates that DGRO moved less than the referenced market on average over that period, not that it will lose only 67% as much in every decline.
- Holdings: 391 holdings provide meaningful diversification, although the portfolio can still tilt toward sectors and styles favored by dividend-growth screens.
Trade-offs
Dividend-growth companies can be more mature and less dependent on speculative valuation expansion than unprofitable growth stocks. However, they remain equities, and rising interest rates can make dividend-paying shares less attractive relative to newly issued bonds. A dividend-growth screen may also exclude younger companies that reinvest cash instead of paying dividends, so DGRO can lag a growth-led rally.
XSHD: small-cap income and low volatility
What the index does
S&P Dow Jones Indices states that the S&P SmallCap 600 Low Volatility High Dividend Index measures the 60 least-volatile high-dividend-yielding stocks in the S&P SmallCap 600. XSHD is an index-linked ETF for that strategy.

Why it is different from the other choices
The low-volatility and high-dividend filters may sound broadly defensive, but the universe is small-cap stocks. Smaller companies can have less diversified revenue, greater refinancing needs, thinner trading markets and more sensitivity to local economic conditions. Those risks can dominate the benefit of the screen during a credit shock or recession.
For that reason, XSHD is more suitable as a satellite allocation than as the core defensive holding for most investors. Its role is to add a specific combination of small-cap exposure and income, not to replace a broad minimum-volatility or bond allocation. The supplied information does not state a current fee, yield, beta, standard deviation or rebalance frequency; check the latest fund and index documents.
Which construction is most appropriate?
| Your priority | Candidate to investigate first | What you must accept |
|---|---|---|
| Reduce portfolio volatility across several sectors | VFMV | Historical screens can fail in new regimes, and sector weights may differ materially from the broad market. |
| Make a direct consumer-staples allocation | VDC | Single-sector concentration and valuation risk. |
| Combine defensive demand with health-care innovation | VHT | Patent, policy, clinical and regulatory risk. |
| Seek a diversified dividend-growth approach | DGRO | Rate sensitivity, equity downside and possible lag during speculative growth rallies. |
| Add small-cap income with a low-volatility screen | XSHD | Small-cap operating and liquidity risk, plus a 60-stock index universe. |
How to evaluate any defensive ETF before buying
- Define the job. Decide whether the fund is intended to reduce volatility, add income, diversify away from technology, preserve purchasing power or retain growth potential. One ETF rarely accomplishes all five objectives.
- Read the index methodology. Confirm the eligible universe, ranking variables, weighting limits, sector constraints and rebalance schedule. The index name alone does not reveal how quickly the portfolio can change.
- Check current risk data. Record the date and benchmark for beta, standard deviation, drawdown and correlation. Historical statistics are useful for comparison only when their periods and definitions match.
- Inspect concentration. Review the top holdings, sector weights and any single-stock cap. Concentration can overwhelm a low-volatility label.
- Verify total cost. Include the expense ratio, bid/ask spread, commissions if applicable, fund turnover and the tax cost of distributions. A lower fee does not compensate for buying an unsuitable exposure.
- Assess trading liquidity. Look at the typical spread and trading volume during normal market hours. Use a limit order when the spread is wide or the market is moving quickly; an ETF can trade away from net asset value in stressed conditions.
- Choose the account deliberately. In a taxable account, dividends and realized capital gains can create current tax liabilities. In a tax-advantaged account, the tax timing differs, but withdrawals and account rules still apply. Determine whether distributions are eligible for the tax treatment you expect and consult a qualified tax professional for your circumstances.
- Set a rebalancing rule. Decide in advance how much of the portfolio the ETF may occupy and when you will restore that target. Rebalancing after a selloff can be difficult emotionally, so write the rule before volatility rises.
Defensive ETFs versus moving to bonds
A defensive equity ETF and a bond fund solve different problems. Equity ETFs such as VDC, VHT, VFMV, DGRO and XSHD still depend on corporate earnings and investor sentiment. Bonds, particularly high-quality government bonds, generally have different primary risks: interest-rate changes, inflation, credit quality and reinvestment risk. Neither category is automatically safer in every environment.
If your objective is to cap near-term losses or fund a known expense, an equity ETF may be the wrong instrument regardless of its label. If your objective is to stay invested in stocks while reducing a concentrated technology exposure, a minimum-volatility, sector or dividend-growth ETF may be more appropriate. The decision should follow the time horizon and required cash-flow certainty, not the headline performance of the latest defensive fund.
How interest rates, valuation and taxes can overturn the defensive thesis
Interest rates
High-dividend and bond-like equities can lose appeal when market interest rates rise because investors can obtain more income from newly issued fixed-income securities. Utilities and other rate-sensitive industries are common examples, although the five funds here have different sector mixes. A falling-rate environment can help such shares, but it does not guarantee gains.

Valuation
Investors often crowd into perceived safe sectors during a growth-stock selloff. If prices rise faster than earnings or cash flow, a later valuation reset can hurt even when the underlying businesses remain profitable. Compare price-to-earnings, free-cash-flow and sector valuations with a suitable benchmark rather than assuming “defensive” means inexpensive.
Taxes
Distributions may be taxable in a brokerage account, and selling at a gain can create a capital-gains liability. Dividend classification, holding periods, fund turnover and your jurisdiction affect the result. Tax-advantaged accounts can defer or change taxation, but they have contribution, withdrawal and eligibility rules. Confirm the current treatment before choosing an ETF solely for its yield.
Common mistakes during a growth-stock selloff
- Chasing the best recent performer: A fund that held up in one selloff may have a different sector mix or valuation in the next.
- Confusing yield with safety: An unusually high yield can signal a falling share price or a distribution that may not be sustainable.
- Ignoring concentration: VDC and VHT can behave very differently from a diversified fund because one sector drives results.
- Assuming low volatility means no drawdown: VFMV and XSHD can still decline, and their screens use historical information.
- Overlooking small-cap risk: XSHD’s 60-stock small-cap universe has different liquidity and financing risks from large-cap funds.
- Trading without a price limit: In a fast market, an ETF’s quoted price can move away from net asset value; a market order may execute at an unfavorable spread.
- Changing the plan repeatedly: Selling growth stocks after a fall and buying a defensive fund after it has rallied can lock in losses and create timing risk.
A practical decision framework
Start with your existing portfolio, not with the ETF ticker. If most of your risk comes from a technology or long-duration growth allocation, VFMV offers the broadest construction in this group for investigating a lower-volatility tilt. If you want a specific essential-goods exposure, evaluate VDC; if you want health-care innovation and accept policy and patent risk, evaluate VHT. If income growth and cross-sector diversification are priorities, DGRO has the clearest published historical risk and income figures in this comparison. Consider XSHD only when you intentionally want small-cap exposure alongside its dividend and volatility screens.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Use one or more funds only if their roles are distinct. For example, adding a concentrated sector ETF to a portfolio that already has heavy exposure to that sector may increase, rather than reduce, risk. Review correlations, top holdings and sector weights together; a list of five “defensive” tickers is not automatically diversified.
Bottom line: choose the defense mechanism, not the label
VFMV is the logical starting point for a broad minimum-volatility investigation; VDC and VHT are targeted sector choices; DGRO is a diversified dividend-growth option with published historical beta and volatility; and XSHD is a specialized small-cap satellite. None is a guaranteed shelter. Fees, valuation, interest-rate sensitivity, taxes, concentration and trading liquidity can matter more than the word “defensive” in the fund name. Match the ETF’s construction to the risk you are actually trying to reduce, verify current documents and data dates, and keep the position size consistent with your overall plan.
