For a finished video that viewers will watch together at a scheduled time, export it as a YouTube upload and schedule it as a Premiere. For a true live broadcast of that recording, Resolve’s export is only the source file: a separate encoder or playout system sends a live feed to YouTube. The two workflows use different bitrate recommendations.

Choose a Premiere or an encoder-based live stream

Decision YouTube Premiere Encoder-based live stream
What YouTube receives A finished video file uploaded before the event. A live encoded feed played from the recording.
Relevant bitrate guidance YouTube’s upload recommendations for the rendered file. YouTube’s live-ingestion recommendations for the feed sent by the encoder.
1080p H.264 example 8 Mbps at 24/25/30 fps; 12 Mbps at 48/50/60 fps. 14 Mbps at 30 fps; 17 Mbps at 60 fps.
Resolution note YouTube’s current Premiere instructions say output above 1080p is unsupported. YouTube’s live guide lists higher resolutions, subject to its settings and recommendations.

A Premiere is the simpler option when the goal is scheduled, shared viewing of a completed upload. Choose an encoder broadcast when the video must be transmitted as a live stream. See YouTube’s Premiere instructions and live-streaming overview.

Best Resolve export settings for a YouTube Premiere

For a standard SDR upload, use these targets in DaVinci Resolve. Resolve’s exact Deliver-page labels and codec controls can vary by version and operating system, so set the target values using the controls available in your installation rather than assuming there is one universal preset.

  • Container: MP4.
  • Video codec: H.264.
  • Scan: Progressive.
  • Frame rate: Match the source recording and project. YouTube Help says, “Content should be encoded and uploaded in the same frame rate it was recorded.”
  • Resolution: Use the intended output resolution, but keep a Premiere at or below 1080p under YouTube’s current stated limitation.
  • SDR color: BT.709 / Rec. 709.
  • Video bitrate: Choose the row matching your resolution and frame rate in the table below. These are YouTube recommendations for uploads, not mandatory minimums.
  • Audio: YouTube’s upload guidance lists 48 kHz audio and AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio. For stereo, its recommendation is 384 kbps.

YouTube’s encoding page notes that its documented features are available to partners using YouTube Studio Content Manager. Treat these figures as published YouTube guidance; not every account or Resolve preset necessarily exposes each control. Refer to YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings for the current details.

SDR upload bitrate recommendations

Output Frame rate YouTube-recommended video bitrate
1080p SDR 24, 25, or 30 fps 8 Mbps
1080p SDR 48, 50, or 60 fps 12 Mbps
1440p SDR Standard frame rate 16 Mbps
1440p SDR High frame rate 24 Mbps
2160p/4K SDR Standard frame rate 35–45 Mbps
2160p/4K SDR High frame rate 53–68 Mbps

These are YouTube’s current upload recommendations, accessed in 2026. For HDR, use the HDR row for the chosen resolution and frame rate on YouTube’s encoding page; do not carry SDR bitrate values over to an HDR render.

Export and schedule the Premiere

  1. Confirm the viewing format. If viewers should watch the completed video at a scheduled time, use a Premiere rather than configuring a live encoder.
  2. Set the project and export targets. Match the recording’s frame rate, choose the intended aspect ratio and resolution, and use the SDR targets and corresponding bitrate above when applicable. Avoid changing frame rate just to reach a round number.
  3. Render the finished file. Use MP4/H.264 and the appropriate upload bitrate recommendation. Check the exported file’s image, audio, duration, and sync before uploading.
  4. Upload in YouTube Studio and allow processing to finish. A Premiere is based on the uploaded video, so it must be uploaded before the scheduled viewing.
  5. Set it as an instant or scheduled Premiere. Follow the current YouTube Premiere instructions to choose the event timing and publish or schedule it.

Settings for a prerecorded video sent as a live broadcast

When a recording is played through an encoder and sent to YouTube as a live feed, use YouTube’s live-ingestion chart—not the upload bitrate table above—to configure the outgoing feed. The file’s export bitrate and the encoder’s live-feed bitrate describe different stages. A separate encoder may decode and re-encode the rendered file, so do not assume the Resolve export itself should be set to the live CBR bitrate.

YouTube’s live guide recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds), RTMPS, and Rec. 709 for SDR. Its listed workflow supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; audio guidance lists AAC or MP3. These are recommendations for the feed arriving at YouTube, not export settings for every intermediate file. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and configure the encoder for the selected stream resolution and frame rate.

  1. Render a suitable source file. Match the material and intended output; the right file settings depend on the playout and encoder chain.
  2. Set up the live event and encoder. Choose the stream resolution and frame rate, then apply YouTube’s live recommendations to the outgoing feed, including CBR and the keyframe interval.
  3. Test before the event. Use a similar section with motion and audio, then monitor YouTube’s stream health as it advises. This helps catch feed configuration or connection issues before viewers arrive.

The available guidance does not establish a single Resolve-specific export preset for all encoder chains. Avoid treating YouTube’s live bitrate as a universal Resolve render target.

Common problems and fixes

  • A Premiere output above 1080p is unavailable or unsupported: YouTube’s current Premiere instructions state that output greater than 1080p is not supported. Export a version at or below 1080p for this workflow.
  • The video looks soft or motion is uneven: Check that the export resolution and frame rate match the source and intended display. Do not force a frame-rate conversion without a production reason.
  • The live stream is unstable or reports poor stream health: Verify the encoder’s outgoing resolution, frame rate, CBR setting, keyframe interval, and bitrate against YouTube’s live guide. Test a representative section and monitor stream health.
  • The render is set to the live bitrate but the live feed still differs: The render bitrate applies to the file; the live bitrate applies to the separately encoded feed. Check the encoder or playout configuration independently.
  • An audio codec or color control is missing in Resolve: Controls vary by Resolve version and operating system. Use the available compatible controls and consult YouTube’s guidance rather than assuming every listed option is present in every preset.

Copyright and content considerations

Export settings do not grant rights to music, footage, or other material in the video. Before a Premiere or live broadcast, confirm you have the necessary rights and review YouTube’s applicable copyright rules. For recurring or looped programming, also make sure the material and presentation comply with YouTube’s channel monetization policies; technical availability does not guarantee monetization.
