For the sharpest, most cinematic Cyberpunk 2077 screenshots, optimize for one finished frame rather than playable frame rate: use the highest output resolution your GPU can render reliably, enable Ray Tracing: Overdrive (path tracing) when your hardware qualifies, turn on DLSS Ray Reconstruction on supported GeForce RTX cards, and capture through Photo Mode. Overdrive produces the most cohesive lighting, shadow and reflection treatment, while Photo Mode can spend seconds or minutes rendering a single high-quality frame.
The settings below separate interactive navigation from final capture quality, identify the VRAM and resolution limits published by CD PROJEKT RED, and give practical fallbacks when path tracing is too slow or unavailable.
Recommended screenshot profiles at a glance
Choose a profile by output resolution, VRAM and whether you need to move through the scene in real time. The upscaling choices are starting points rather than universal measurements; inspect the saved image at 100% and adjust for the particular scene.

Why Overdrive and Path Tracing produce a more cinematic frame
Ray Tracing: Overdrive is Cyberpunk 2077’s full path-tracing mode. NVIDIA describes it as a unified approach that calculates direct and global illumination, reflections and shadows from many light sources instead of combining older global-illumination and screen-space techniques. Reflections are rendered at full resolution, so wet streets, glass, polished metal and car paint retain more coherent detail when the camera angle changes.
CD PROJEKT RED calls Overdrive “very GPU intensive” and leaves it off by default. That cost is useful for a still image: Photo Mode can render one frame after you have finished composing, so a low interactive frame rate does not automatically disqualify the setting. The trade-off is waiting for the capture and having enough video memory for the selected output.
Path tracing is most visible in scenes with several colored signs, practical lamps, windows, rain or glossy surfaces. It can also improve the relationship between a bright source and nearby shaded surfaces, giving a portrait or street scene more dimensional falloff. In a brightly lit, matte environment, the difference may be less dramatic, so do not lower resolution solely to enable a mode whose benefit is invisible in your chosen shot.

Official performance targets
CD PROJEKT RED’s current system-requirements table lists three useful anchors:
- Ray Tracing Overdrive: 2160p at 60 FPS, GeForce RTX 4080, 16 GB VRAM and 24 GB system RAM. The published measurement has DLSS Frame Generation enabled.
- Ray-tracing recommended: 1080p at 60 FPS with a GeForce RTX 3080 Ti or Radeon RX 7900 XTX and 12 GB VRAM.
- Non-ray-traced Ultra: 2160p at 60 FPS with a GeForce RTX 3080 or Radeon RX 7900 XTX and 12 GB VRAM.
These are named targets under the conditions in the requirements table, not a promise for every location, driver, operating-system configuration or future game build. The Overdrive target specifically includes Frame Generation, so native rendered performance will be lower than the headline output rate.

Photo Mode path-tracing thresholds
For ray-tracing-capable GPUs, CD PROJEKT RED gives minimum VRAM by Photo Mode output:
| Photo Mode output | Minimum VRAM | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| 1920×1080 | 8 GB | Eligible for a path-traced still if the GPU otherwise supports the feature |
| 2560×1440 | 10 GB | More memory headroom is needed for the larger render target |
| 3840×2160 | 12 GB | Highest detail and the longest likely render time |
The support guidance warns that the higher the resolution and the less powerful the GPU, the longer a screenshot can take—from a few seconds to several minutes. If the capture appears stalled, give it time before assuming the game has crashed; monitor GPU activity and wait for the image to finish.

Set up the game before composing
- Update the game. Use a current build so the Photo Mode interface and fixes match the documented controls. Patch 2.21 fixed issues involving camera movement, presets, spawned characters, aspect-ratio grid behavior and chromatic-aberration control.
- Choose the output resolution. Select 2160p only when your GPU has the required memory and can complete the frame in a reasonable time. Otherwise use 1440p or 1080p; a clean lower-resolution image is preferable to a 4K capture with severe instability or missing detail.
- Select the lighting mode. Turn on Ray Tracing: Overdrive for the maximum-quality profile. If the option is unavailable, too slow, or incompatible with your GPU, use Ray Tracing Ultra, then Ultra raster as the fallback.
- Enable DLSS Ray Reconstruction where offered. In the NVIDIA DLSS section, select the current model exposed by your build. Patch 2.21 documents CNN and Transformer choices. Ray Reconstruction requires Path Tracing in the DLSS 3.5 implementation.
- Set DLSS Super Resolution. Start with Quality. If the scene cannot render reliably, try Balanced; if distant wires, hair or signage shimmer, return toward Quality or native resolution. This is a scene-dependent visual decision, not a universal ranking of modes.
- Decide on Frame Generation. It can make movement around the scene feel smoother and appears in CD PROJEKT RED’s published Overdrive performance target. It does not replace the need to judge the final rendered still: inspect the saved frame rather than its displayed navigation rate.
- Load the location and wait. Allow world streaming, lighting and crowd assets to settle before opening Photo Mode. Moving the camera immediately after entering an area can leave temporary texture or geometry changes in the composition.
Photo Mode workflow for a sharp final image
- Open Photo Mode. On PC, press N.
- Build the composition. Position the camera, set field of view and choose the aspect-ratio framing that matches your intended use. A wider field of view shows more environment but makes subjects smaller; a tighter field of view emphasizes a face, vehicle or sign and increases the apparent compression of background lights.
- Place the focus plane. Use depth of field deliberately. Put the focus point on the subject’s eyes for a portrait, or on the key vehicle, prop or architectural edge for a scene. Excessive blur can hide the detail you worked to preserve.
- Control visual effects. Treat vignette, grain, bloom, chromatic aberration and color adjustments as creative controls. For a technically sharp image, keep grain and chromatic aberration restrained; add stylization only when it serves the shot.
- Enable the Photo Mode path-tracing option. Use it only when your chosen output meets the VRAM threshold and you accept the render wait. If the option is absent, remain on the best real-time lighting mode your GPU supports.
- Capture the frame. Trigger the screenshot and wait through the render. Do not move the camera or switch menus while a high-resolution path-traced frame is being generated.
- Retrieve the file. On PC, captures are saved in
%UserProfile%PicturesCyberpunk 2077. - Inspect at 100 percent. Check fine wires, hair, foliage, signage and reflective surfaces for shimmer or denoising artifacts. Also look for clipped highlights, incorrect focus and texture streaming changes before publishing or editing.
How to choose DLSS and reconstruction for stills
DLSS Ray Reconstruction
Ray Reconstruction is designed to replace conventional denoisers with an AI reconstruction process for ray-traced effects. NVIDIA describes improved reflection clarity and more accurate global illumination, while the game’s 2.0 implementation ties the feature to Path Tracing. Enable it when the option is available and compare a saved frame, not only the moving preview: some artifacts are easier to see in a still.
DLSS Super Resolution
For a screenshot, use the highest-quality mode that your GPU can finish without obvious instability. Quality generally preserves more fine structure than Balanced, but the right choice depends on the scene, output size and available headroom. Inspect thin geometry, neon lettering, hair and distant building detail. If those elements crawl or dissolve, increase the internal render resolution or disable upscaling for that shot.
Frame Generation
Frame Generation is primarily an interactive-navigation aid. It can make scouting a location feel smoother and is part of the official 2160p/60 Overdrive measurement, but a still should be evaluated for reconstruction, focus and lighting quality. Leave it enabled for navigation if desired; do not treat its displayed frame rate as proof that the underlying render is native 4K.

Fallback settings when Overdrive is impractical
Use Ray Tracing Ultra
Ray Tracing Ultra is the first fallback when path tracing causes unacceptable wait times or memory pressure. It retains hardware ray-traced lighting and reflections while avoiding the full cost of the unified path-tracing solution. Keep the output resolution as high as the GPU can sustain and use the cleanest DLSS mode available.

Use Ultra raster rendering
If ray tracing is unavailable, unstable or visually unimportant in your chosen scene, Ultra raster is a dependable alternative. Keep texture quality high when memory allows, because a sharp screenshot loses more from blurry textures than from a lighting mode difference that is not visible in the composition. Use Photo Mode’s camera and depth-of-field controls to create separation without relying on heavy post-processing.
Lower resolution before adding blur
When VRAM is the limiting factor, step from 2160p to 1440p or 1080p before weakening every image-quality setting. A stable render at the lower target can preserve crisp edges and consistent reflections, whereas an overloaded 4K capture may show streaming failures, long waits or incomplete effects.

The screenshot takes several minutes
High resolution and a less powerful GPU directly increase Photo Mode render time. Confirm that the game is still using the GPU, wait for the operation to complete, and reduce output resolution or disable Photo Mode path tracing for future shots if the delay is not practical.
Path Tracing is missing or refuses to enable
Check that the GPU supports hardware ray tracing, the selected output fits the published VRAM minimum, and the game is current. If any requirement is not met, use Ray Tracing Ultra or Ultra raster instead of forcing an unsupported combination.

Neon signs or thin wires shimmer
Increase DLSS Super Resolution quality, try native rendering if performance permits, and verify the issue in the saved file at 100 percent. Ray Reconstruction can improve ray-traced clarity, but it cannot restore detail that was never rendered at sufficient internal resolution.
Reflections look smeared
Confirm that Overdrive or another ray-traced mode is active, then compare with Ray Reconstruction enabled. Inspect the frame after it has finished rendering; moving previews can include temporary denoising behavior that is not present in the completed capture.
The subject is soft even though the image is high resolution
Reopen Photo Mode and move the depth-of-field focus plane onto the subject. Check field of view and focus before changing resolution or upscaling. A 4K file cannot correct a focus plane placed behind the intended subject.
Textures or characters pop after entering Photo Mode
Exit to the scene, wait for streaming to settle, and reopen Photo Mode. Patch 2.21 addressed several Photo Mode and spawned-character issues, so updating the game is an important first step.

Practical decision framework
- You have a high-end RTX card and want the strongest lighting: choose native 2160p, Overdrive, Ray Reconstruction and a high-quality DLSS mode; accept a long single-frame render.
- You have around 10 GB of VRAM and target 1440p: use Path Tracing if the capture meets the threshold, otherwise Ray Tracing Ultra; start DLSS at Quality and inspect fine detail.
- You have 8 GB of VRAM and target 1080p: Path-traced Photo Mode is within the published minimum, but render time may still vary; keep Ray Tracing Ultra or Ultra raster ready as a fallback.
- You need to scout and recompose quickly: enable Frame Generation for navigation, then judge only the completed screenshot for publication quality.
- Your scene is mostly matte and evenly lit: prioritize resolution, focus and texture stability over forcing Overdrive, since the visual gain from path tracing may be small.
Final pre-publish checklist
- Output resolution matches the intended destination and the GPU’s memory.
- Lighting mode is explicitly recorded so the same look can be recreated.
- Path-traced Photo Mode is used only within the published VRAM threshold.
- Ray Reconstruction is enabled when supported and Path Tracing is active.
- DLSS mode does not introduce shimmer in hair, wires, foliage or signage.
- Depth-of-field focus is on the intended subject.
- Highlights are not clipped and shadows retain detail.
- The saved file, not the moving preview, has been checked at 100 percent.
- The original capture is retained before any crop, sharpening or color work.
