Start with Fortnite if your group uses a mix of PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo and PC. It has the broadest, lowest-friction cross-play setup in this list. Choose Apex Legends for squad battle royale gunplay, Overwatch for objective-based hero matches, Destiny 2 for long-term cooperative progression, Call of Duty: Warzone for large-scale military battle royale, or THE FINALS for short arena rounds built around destruction.
Before anyone downloads a game, check its current platform page and matchmaking rules. A title can be released on several systems without allowing those systems to share a match, and competitive modes sometimes separate console and PC players.
What cross-platform shooter actually means
“Cross-platform” is often used for two different ideas. A game may be available on multiple systems, but that does not prove that players on those systems can join one another. Cross-play is the specific feature that places players from different platforms in the same multiplayer environment. Epic describes cross-play as multiplayer between major consoles, PC and other supported devices on shared servers, while TechRadar distinguishes a multi-platform release from true crossplay.

1. Fortnite: the safest first install for a mixed group
Why it works
Fortnite is the strongest default when the group spans several console families and PC. Epic explicitly identifies it as a fully cross-platform, crossplay game, and the game offers more than one experience, including battle royale. That variety matters when not everyone wants the same kind of shooter: one person can prefer a conventional elimination match while another wants a lower-pressure or creative activity.
Its free entry removes the biggest coordination problem. Nobody has to buy a boxed game before discovering that a friend’s platform is excluded. Players still need the appropriate game account and, depending on the console, the platform’s online-multiplayer requirements.
Trade-offs
- The colorful presentation and constantly changing service-game format are not a good fit for every military-shooter fan.
- Mode availability, account features and platform support can change with updates, so check Epic’s current listing before promising a specific mode to the group.
- Cross-play solves access, not skill differences. A new player may still need a few low-pressure matches before contributing confidently.
Choose it when
Pick Fortnite when your priority is getting the largest possible mix of PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo and PC players into one party with minimal setup.
2. Apex Legends: the best pure squad battle royale choice
Supported platforms and party behavior
Electronic Arts says Apex Legends supports cross-play on EA app, Steam, Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch 2, with cross-play enabled automatically. Add friends from the game’s own Friends menu by searching for each person’s EA Public ID rather than relying only on a console friends list.
EA’s FAQ describes an important matchmaking rule: console players normally match with console players, but when a console player parties with someone on PC, the whole party is placed into PC matches. This preserves separate console and PC pools for solo and console-only play while allowing mixed parties to queue together.

Why squads like it
Apex combines gunplay with distinct legends, so a coordinated squad can divide responsibilities without requiring a fixed class system. One player can concentrate on information or movement, another on defense, and another on damage. The battle-royale format rewards communication, positioning and revives rather than only individual aim.

3. Overwatch: the best objective-focused hero shooter
Platform coverage and mode limits
Blizzard documents cross-play for PC, Xbox One and Xbox Series, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch. Cross-play covers the game’s modes with one major exception: Competitive games keep console and PC players in separate pools for balance.
That distinction should shape your choice. A mixed-platform group can play casual objective modes together, but it cannot form one unrestricted console-and-PC Competitive pool. If ranked play is the reason your group is installing the game, confirm the current competitive rules first.
Why it suits groups
Overwatch is built around short objective matches and hero roles. Damage, tank and support choices give new players several ways to help a team, and a player who struggles with precision aim may still contribute through protection, healing, movement or crowd control. The objective structure also gives a party a clear task beyond simply collecting eliminations.

Trade-offs
- Hero abilities, counters and team composition can be difficult to learn when everyone is new.
- Competitive cross-platform play is intentionally restricted between console and PC.
- Switch hardware and portable controls may feel different from mouse-and-keyboard play, so casual modes are a better first session.
Choose it when
Pick Overwatch when your friends prefer role-based teamwork, short objective rounds and a choice of heroes over a traditional battle-royale structure.

4. Destiny 2: the best long-term cooperative progression
What makes it different
Destiny 2 is the outlier in this group because its main appeal is not only competitive shooting. Epic lists it as supporting cross-play and cross-save, while Microsoft’s cross-platform shooter catalog lists the base game as free with in-app purchases. The free starting point lets a group test the core shooting and cooperative activities before deciding whether expansions are worthwhile.
Its long-term loop combines campaign activities, seasonal content, gear progression, strikes, raids and dungeons. That gives a regular group a reason to return, but it also means more systems to learn than in a single-session arena shooter.
Costs and progression questions
The free base game is only the starting point. Expansions and seasonal content can add campaigns, locations, subclasses or activities, and ownership rules may differ by platform. Check the current store description for the exact expansion bundle and cross-save terms before one player buys content for the whole group.
Trade-offs
- Onboarding is more involved because the game mixes story, gear, vendors, currencies and several activity types.
- Raids and dungeons require scheduling and communication; they are not drop-in matches for a five-minute session.
- Cross-save can move progress, but it does not automatically make every platform purchase or expansion available everywhere.
Choose it when
Choose Destiny 2 when your group wants a persistent cooperative hobby with campaigns, loot and high-end activities rather than only quick competitive rounds.
5. Call of Duty: Warzone: the large-scale military battle royale option
Platforms and scale
TechRadar lists Warzone cross-play support for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, with PlayStation 4 and Xbox One available through backwards compatibility. Because Warzone is a live service, confirm the current platform page, supported generation and required download before the group commits to an installation.
The game is aimed at players who want military presentation, large maps, squad coordination and a substantial weapons system. Its scale makes voice communication and role assignment more important than in a compact arena match.

Practical considerations
- Plan for a large installation and frequent updates compared with smaller arena games.
- Mixed-skill groups may find the early matches intense; agree on whether the first sessions are for learning or winning.
- Check whether your console has enough free storage and whether every player is installing the same current version.
Choose it when
Pick Warzone when the group specifically wants a serious-feeling military battle royale and is prepared for larger downloads, regular updates and a demanding competitive environment.

6. THE FINALS: the destruction-focused arena alternative
Core fit
Microsoft includes THE FINALS in its cross-platform multiplayer catalog. The game centers on short arena rounds, objective play and environments that can be damaged or reshaped. That combination creates tactical choices that are different from simply holding a fixed lane: a team can use destruction to open routes, deny cover or change an objective fight.
What to verify first
A storefront catalog is useful evidence that the game supports cross-platform multiplayer, but it is not a detailed support guide. Before your party installs it, verify the current platform matrix, whether your console generation is included, how cross-progression works and whether any mode has a separate matchmaking pool.
Trade-offs
- Destruction adds tactical depth but can make the first matches visually busy and difficult to read.
- Objective rounds reward coordinated movement more than passive sniping.
- Free-to-play access lowers the barrier to entry, while optional purchases and live-service changes should be checked in the current store listing.
Choose it when
Choose THE FINALS when your group wants fast, energetic arena matches in which the map itself is part of the strategy.

Set up a cross-platform party without losing an evening
- List every device first. Write down each player’s exact system: PlayStation 4 or 5, Xbox One or Series, Nintendo Switch or Switch 2, and PC. “Console” is not precise enough when a game supports only one generation or applies different matchmaking rules.
- Choose one game and confirm its current support page. Check the publisher or platform listing for the edition, generation, launcher and mode you intend to play. Live-service support and included-subscription status can change.
- Install the same current version. Allow updates to finish before the planned session. Version mismatches can prevent party invitations even when the platforms are supported.
- Create or link the game account. Use the game’s own account system when required. In Apex Legends, for example, add friends through the in-game Friends menu using the EA Public ID.
- Turn on cross-play. Leave it enabled unless the group has a specific reason to disable it. EA warns that disabling cross-play can increase queue times in Apex Legends.
- Invite from inside the game. Console friend lists and platform chat may not be enough. Search for each player’s in-game name or account ID, then send a party invitation from the title’s social menu.
- Test a casual mode first. Use a low-stakes match to confirm voice chat, controls, latency and matchmaking behavior before entering ranked, Competitive, a tournament or a long activity.
- Agree on input and matchmaking expectations. In Apex, a console-and-PC party enters PC matches. In Overwatch, Competitive keeps console and PC pools separate. Tell less experienced players what this means before the first queue.
Common problems and fixes
“The game is on both consoles, but we cannot invite each other.”
Check whether the title supports cross-play rather than merely separate console releases. Confirm that everyone is on the same edition and current patch, then add friends through the game’s account system instead of the console dashboard.
“The PC player cannot join our console-only queue.”
This may be intentional matchmaking behavior. Apex places a party containing a PC player into PC matches, and Overwatch separates console and PC players in Competitive. Switch to a supported casual mode or choose a title whose rules fit the group.

“The queue takes much longer after we changed a setting.”
Re-enable cross-play. EA specifically warns that disabling it can increase Apex Legends queue times. If the problem persists, restore the default social settings and restart the game after updates complete.
“One player cannot see the invitation.”
Verify the exact in-game account ID, privacy settings, blocked-player list and network status. Have both players restart the game after accepting a new account or platform-link prompt.
“We can play, but voice chat fails.”
Check that in-game voice is enabled, the correct input and output devices are selected, and console privacy controls permit communication. A separate group call can confirm whether the issue is the game’s voice service or the player’s network and headset.
“A friend’s progress or purchase is missing on another system.”
Cross-play does not imply cross-save. Confirm that the same game account is linked on both devices and read the current cross-save and content-ownership terms. Destiny 2 is specifically listed as supporting cross-save, but expansion access can still depend on platform and purchase rules.
Before you commit to a game
- Record every player’s exact platform and console generation.
- Decide whether the group needs battle royale, hero objectives, co-op progression or arena rounds.
- Confirm whether a mixed PC-console party changes the matchmaking pool.
- Check free-entry requirements, optional expansions, battle passes and platform online subscriptions.
- Reserve storage for the installation and future updates, especially for Warzone.
- Use a casual test match to confirm invites, voice chat and latency.
- Recheck the publisher’s current platform matrix immediately before the session.
Bottom line
For the widest mix of consoles and PC, install Fortnite first. Apex Legends is the stronger choice for squad battle royale gunplay, Overwatch for objective hero matches, Destiny 2 for a long-running cooperative group, Warzone for military-scale battle royale and THE FINALS for destructive arena play.
