For repeated Cinebench renders, choose the Noctua NH-D15 G2 as the premium air cooler, the ARCTIC Liquid Freezer III Pro 360 when your case accepts a 360 mm radiator and you want maximum AIO headroom, or the Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE for the lowest-cost route to near-flagship air-cooling performance. The right choice is the one that can hold your processor’s sustained package power without thermal throttling, while fitting your socket, memory, case and noise target.
A short temperature spike is not the same as sustained performance. Cinebench keeps all cores busy long enough for the heatsink or radiator, fans, pump, case airflow and motherboard power limits to reach a steady state. The comparisons below therefore focus on long all-core behavior rather than a single peak-temperature reading or an allegedly universal Cinebench score.
What matters in a sustained Cinebench run
Cinebench performance is governed by the heat your processor can produce continuously and how effectively the cooler can reject that heat. A cooler may look excellent during the first few seconds, while the cold plate, heatpipes, fins or coolant are still absorbing heat. After several minutes, the important figures are the temperature at equilibrium, the package power the CPU can maintain and whether the processor reduces clock speed to stay within its thermal limit.
- Dissipation capacity: the cooler must move heat away continuously, not merely absorb a brief burst.
- Steady-state temperature: compare temperatures after they have levelled off during the same workload.
- Power maintained: a lower temperature is useful only if the CPU is also allowed to sustain its intended power.
- Noise: fan and pump speed can hide thermal differences. A cooler that reaches a result only at an unpleasant sound level is a different choice from one that does it quietly.
- Platform limits: motherboard power settings, CPU boost rules, ambient temperature and case airflow can change the result as much as the cooler.
No single Cinebench score ranks every cooler. The published tests used for these recommendations involve different processors, power limits, acoustic targets and procedures. Treat the measured results as evidence for each product’s behavior, not as a cross-platform leaderboard.

Noctua NH-D15 G2: the premium air reference
Why it suits repeated renders
Noctua’s NSPR guide gives the NH-D15 G2 a rating of 228. The rating is intended to cover more than a momentary burst: “The second basis of the NSPR is a measurement of dissipation capacity that reflects the ability to sustain high heat-loads.” That makes it a useful reference for a workload such as repeated Cinebench renders, where the heat load remains high after the initial temperature rise.
The product datasheet identifies the extra heatpipes as particularly helpful at extreme heat loads of 250 W and beyond. That does not mean every processor will draw 250 W, nor does it guarantee a specific temperature; it explains why the cooler is aimed at high, sustained loads rather than only mainstream short boosts.
What the testing says
Tom’s Hardware reported up to a 3 °C improvement over the original NH-D15 in its testing and included Cinebench results. Because that review used its own processor, power settings and test environment, the number should be read as the improvement observed in that comparison, not as a universal offset for every system.

Compatibility checks before buying
- Socket: the current datasheet lists AM5 and AM4, plus Intel LGA1851 and LGA1700.
- Case height: measure the maximum CPU-cooler height in your case manual or manufacturer specification. A dual-tower cooler can fail to close the side panel even when the motherboard technically accepts it.
- Memory: tall heat spreaders or RGB modules can conflict with the front fan. Plan to raise the fan only if your case has spare height, or use a lower-profile memory position.
- PCIe access: the fin stack can overhang the top expansion slot on some boards. Check a board-specific layout if the first slot is close to the socket.
Who should choose it
Choose the NH-D15 G2 when you want flagship-class air cooling, no pump to configure and a straightforward long-term service model. It is especially attractive for a workstation that runs Cinebench or other all-core workloads regularly and where a large tower fits without forcing compromises elsewhere.
ARCTIC Liquid Freezer III Pro 360: maximum AIO headroom
Hardware and published position
PC Gamer’s 2026 AIO guide named the Liquid Freezer III Pro its best liquid cooler in the tested selection and lists 240, 280, 360 and 420 mm variants. The 360 review documents a 398 × 120 × 38 mm aluminium radiator, an in-house pump and three P12 Pro fans rated from 600 to 3000 rpm.
The radiator is 38 mm thick before the fans are added. Confirm the total thickness available at the intended mounting position, the clearance around motherboard heatsinks and the orientation recommended by your case. A nominal “360 mm support” label does not always guarantee room for this thicker radiator-and-fan assembly.

Quick wins for a faster PC:

A larger radiator provides more fin area and can spread the heat load across three fans. That can create additional thermal headroom for a high-power processor, particularly when the case has a clean front or top exhaust path. It is not automatically faster than a large air cooler: pump speed, fan curve, radiator placement, ambient temperature and CPU contact all matter.
Installation and maintenance trade-offs
- You must mount both the CPU block and the radiator, route tubing without sharp bends and connect pump and fan headers correctly.
- The pump adds another powered component and a possible source of noise or failure that an air cooler does not have.
- Radiator placement affects GPU heat exposure and case airflow. Follow the case maker’s guidance and keep the pump from becoming the highest point in the loop when possible.
- Inspect the tubes, fittings and surrounding components during assembly and after transport. Do not run the system if you see a leak.
Select this model when your case is designed for a 360 mm radiator and you value the extra thermal margin more than the simpler installation and lower component count of a tower cooler.

Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE: the value choice
Thermal performance for the money
In PC Gamer’s 2026 air-cooler testing, the Peerless Assassin 120 SE was often within 1–2 °C of the NH-D15 G2. That is unusually close for a cooler positioned at the value end of the market, making it a sensible option for a budget workstation or a high-core-count CPU when you can accept its acoustic behavior.
The noise compromise
The same testing measured 50 dB(A) at 40 cm. Sound measurements depend on room, microphone placement, fan control and test procedure, but this result establishes the trade-off clearly: the cooler can deliver strong temperatures while being noticeably louder than a low-noise configuration. Set a fan curve that avoids unnecessary maximum speed, then verify that the resulting sustained temperature still prevents throttling.

Fit and installation
Like the NH-D15 G2, the Peerless Assassin is a dual-tower design. Verify case height, front-fan clearance over memory and access to the top PCIe slot. Mounting is generally less involved than an AIO because there is no radiator or pump, but motherboard-specific brackets and fan clips still need to be installed carefully.

PC Gamer listed a price around $40/£36 at publication in 2026. Street prices, availability and regional bundles change, so treat that figure as a dated reference rather than a current quote.
Is a 360 mm AIO better than the NH-D15 G2?
There is no unconditional winner. The Liquid Freezer III Pro 360 is the better fit when your case has suitable 360 mm mounting space and you want the greatest cooling headroom from the options here. The NH-D15 G2 is the better fit when you prefer a simpler, pump-free build, have limited radiator space or value easy long-term servicing.
| Decision factor | NH-D15 G2 | Liquid Freezer III Pro 360 |
|---|---|---|
| Sustained heat capacity | High-capacity dual-tower air cooler; NSPR 228, with extra heatpipes intended to help at 250 W and above. | Large 360 mm radiator with three P12 Pro fans; offers substantial headroom when mounted in a well-ventilated position. |
| Installation | Mount one heatsink and its fans; no pump or tubing. | Mount block, radiator and fans; route tubing and connect pump and fan headers. |
| Clearance risk | CPU-cooler height, RAM and top-slot clearance are the main checks. | Radiator thickness, fan clearance, motherboard heatsinks, tubing path and case mounting position are the main checks. |
| Failure points | Fans and mounting hardware are the primary service items. | Fans plus pump and sealed-loop components add complexity. |
| Best choice when | You want reliable, quiet-capable air cooling and a straightforward build. | Your case supports the radiator and you prioritize maximum thermal margin. |
Choosing for Ryzen 9 7950X, 9950X or Core i9 systems
High-core-count Ryzen 9 and Core i9 processors can sustain much higher all-core heat than mainstream chips, especially when motherboard limits permit aggressive boosting. Start by deciding the power behavior you want: stock limits, the board’s automatic enhancement mode or a manually constrained package-power target. A cooler cannot make a processor obey a limit that the firmware has removed, and a lower temperature alone does not prove that more performance is being delivered.
- 7950X or 9950X: choose the NH-D15 G2 when you want a premium air solution and have adequate clearance; choose the Peerless Assassin 120 SE when budget matters and 50 dB(A)-class test noise is acceptable; choose the Liquid Freezer III Pro 360 when the case supports it and you want additional radiator headroom.
- High-end Core i9: first verify the motherboard’s power limits and socket mounting. A 360 mm AIO is attractive for unrestricted sustained loads, while the NH-D15 G2 is appropriate when you intentionally enforce a more moderate power target or prefer air cooling.
- Any platform: use the same BIOS limits, ambient conditions and fan policy when comparing coolers. Otherwise, the apparent difference may be a platform setting rather than the heatsink.
How to test sustained Cinebench performance fairly
- Record the platform: note the CPU model, motherboard, BIOS version, memory settings, operating-system power plan, room temperature and case-fan layout.
- Fix the CPU policy: choose stock limits or a defined manual package-power limit. Do not compare one cooler with unrestricted motherboard enhancement against another with Intel or AMD default limits.
- Install consistently: clean the CPU heat spreader, apply the same thermal-interface method and tighten the mounting hardware evenly according to the cooler instructions.
- Warm the system: allow the system to reach normal idle conditions, then run a repeated multi-core Cinebench workload long enough for temperatures and clocks to settle. Cinebench R23’s built-in 10-minute loop is a practical baseline, followed by additional loops if your workload runs longer.
- Log the right values: capture CPU package temperature, effective all-core clock, package power, fan speed, pump speed where applicable and any thermal or power-limit flags.
- Repeat: perform at least two runs after the initial setup run. If results vary, investigate mounting pressure, fan-control hysteresis, background tasks and room-temperature changes before declaring a winner.
- Report conditions: include the measurement distance for sound readings and identify whether noise was normalized or simply measured at each cooler’s default behavior.
This method explains why a universal Cinebench score is misleading. A processor running at a different power limit or temperature target can produce a different score even with the same cooler.
Installation checklist
For either air cooler
- Confirm the socket kit matches AM5, AM4, LGA1851 or LGA1700 as applicable.
- Remove protective film from the cooler base and clean any old thermal compound from the CPU.
- Install the manufacturer’s backplate or mounting bars without overtightening.
- Apply the specified thermal compound, lower the heatsink evenly and tighten in a cross pattern.
- Clip the fans so airflow follows the case’s front-to-rear or bottom-to-top path.
- Check that the front fan clears the memory modules and that the side panel closes before final cable management.
- Connect the CPU fan header and confirm in firmware that the fan reports a speed.
For the Liquid Freezer III Pro 360
- Verify the case supports a 360 mm radiator with the radiator’s 398 × 120 × 38 mm dimensions plus fan thickness.
- Install the correct socket bracket and block hardware for your AM5/AM4 or Intel socket.
- Mount the radiator and fans with the intended airflow direction, keeping cables clear of the blades.
- Route tubing with gentle bends and position the pump according to the cooler and case guidance.
- Connect pump and fan leads to the headers specified by the motherboard manual; set a sensible pump mode before tuning the fans.
- Inspect every fitting and cable, then run the system while watching temperatures and pump speed. Shut down immediately if you see coolant or hear abnormal pump noise.
Preventing throttling during long renders
- Use a repeatable power target: uncontrolled motherboard enhancement can turn a cooler comparison into a power-limit comparison.
- Balance fan curves: a curve that reacts only after the CPU is already hot can cause avoidable excursions; a constantly maximum curve wastes acoustic headroom.
- Maintain case airflow: clear front filters, unobstructed exhaust fans and sensible radiator placement matter during a sustained load.
- Check mounting pressure: an uneven block or heatsink contact pattern can produce high temperatures even with a powerful cooler.
- Watch effective clocks: if temperature is acceptable but clocks fall, investigate electrical or firmware power limits rather than replacing the cooler blindly.
- Account for ambient temperature: a 5 °C warmer room raises the baseline for every cooler and can change whether a processor reaches its thermal limit.
Troubleshooting common results
| Symptom | Likely causes | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Temperature climbs continuously through the run | Insufficient radiator airflow, a fan curve that is too slow, poor contact or an obstructed case. | Confirm fan direction, mounting pressure, pump operation and filter cleanliness; repeat with a known fixed fan speed. |
| One core is much hotter than the others | Uneven mounting, imperfect thermal-compound spread or normal chiplet asymmetry. | Inspect the contact pattern after removal and remount evenly. Compare package temperature and effective clocks, not only one core. |
| Clocks fall while temperature is below the thermal limit | CPU package-power, current or motherboard firmware limits. | Log package power and limit flags, then compare with the intended BIOS policy. |
| AIO temperatures suddenly spike or the pump is absent | Loose pump connection, an incorrect header mode, trapped air or a pump fault. | Check the pump header, firmware readout, tubing position and any manufacturer diagnostics. Stop the test if temperatures rise abnormally. |
| Peerless Assassin results are cool but distracting | High fan speed; PC Gamer measured 50 dB(A) at 40 cm in its test. | Set a quieter curve and rerun Cinebench to confirm the new sustained temperature remains acceptable. |
Bottom-line buying advice
Buy the Noctua NH-D15 G2 for a premium, low-complexity air build and use its AM5/AM4 or LGA1851/LGA1700 compatibility and your case measurements as the final checks. Buy the ARCTIC Liquid Freezer III Pro 360 when a 360 mm installation genuinely fits and sustained headroom is more important than pump-and-radiator complexity. Buy the Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE when value is the priority and you accept the measured 50 dB(A) noise trade-off. In every case, configure the processor’s power limits and report the test conditions; that is the only reliable way to know whether a cooler is preventing throttling in your Cinebench workload.
