For most Steam Machine owners, the Valve Steam Controller (2026) is the best controller to buy. It is designed for Steam Machine, pairs without the puck, and combines two trackpads, TMR thumbsticks, gyro motion, four assignable grip buttons, Steam Input remapping and high-definition rumble. The puck adds a dedicated wireless link, magnetic charging and pairing for up to four Steam Controllers.
Choose a familiar Xbox-, PlayStation- or Switch-style pad instead if you dislike trackpads, already own compatible controllers or are prioritizing couch co-op over Steam-specific controls. Because there is no official model-by-model certification list for third-party pads in the available specifications, treat those controllers as options to test rather than guaranteed recommendations.
The most useful accessories depend on your room: a replacement or longer certified HDMI 2.0 cable, powered USB hub, Cat6 Ethernet cable, microSDXC card and a 4K display are the practical additions. Steam Machine already includes an HDMI 2.0 cable, so replacing it is optional.

The best controller for Steam Machine
Valve Steam Controller (2026): best overall
Valve’s product page says the Steam Controller is built for Steam Machine and that it “pairs easily to Steam Machine without its puck.” That makes it the most complete match for a Steam-only living-room setup. It supports the Steam Controller Puck, Bluetooth and USB, so you can use a dedicated wireless connection, ordinary Bluetooth or a wired connection depending on your seating position and charging needs.
#1 Best Overall
- Supported Multi-Platform:Switch/Switch 2 (NO support wake-up function)/iOS/Android/Windows PC (Notice:Not compatible with Xbox, PlayStation or GeForce Now, For game platforms not mentioned, please consult customer service before buying)
- Connection modes:Wired/Bluetooth/Wireless Dongle(Connect to PC via Bluetooth : Select iOS (phone) mode, but it's not recommended; Dongle is more stable)
- 【Innovative Intelligent Interactive Screen】Manba One V2 wireless game controllers create a new era of controller screens; Equipped with a 2-inch display, no App & software needed, you can set the pc controller directly through the screen visualization, More convenient operation
- 【Micro Switch Button】Manba One wireless controller has Micro Switch Button and ALPS Bumper; The 6-axis gyroscope function makes switch games more immersive
- 【Customize Your Own Controller】The intelligent interactive screen allows you to easily set vibrations, buttons, joysticks, lights, etc., without the need for complex key combinations; 4 configurations can be saved to unlock your own gameplay for different games; The 4 back keys support macro definition settings, and you can activate the set character's ultimate move with one click
The control system is unusually flexible. Two TMR thumbsticks provide a conventional dual-stick layout, while the two trackpads can be assigned through Steam Input to behave as a mouse, d-pad, scroll wheel or other controls. Capacitive touch, gyro-capable motion input and four assignable grip buttons provide extra ways to aim, steer or trigger commands without removing your thumbs from the sticks or pads. Steam Input also lets you remap controls and load community layouts for individual games.
Tom’s Guide reports that the puck can pair up to four Steam Controllers for local multiplayer. The bundled controller is reported by PC Gamer to offer more than 35 hours of battery life; that figure is a 2026 report and should be treated as a quoted rating rather than a guarantee for every use pattern.
What the Steam Controller does not solve
Its main limitation is ecosystem focus. Tom’s Guide reports seamless operation with SteamOS but says it is not an easy plug-and-play choice for the Epic Games Store, the Xbox PC app or consoles. If your Steam Machine will also serve as a broad non-Steam gaming box, a familiar controller may involve less configuration. You can still test the Steam Controller with those applications, but the available evidence does not establish universal support.

| Controller choice | Best for | Steam-specific features | Connection and multiplayer notes | Compatibility caveat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Valve Steam Controller (2026) | SteamOS living-room play and configurable controls | Two TMR sticks, two trackpads, capacitive touch, gyro, four grip buttons, Steam Input, high-definition rumble | Puck, Bluetooth or USB; one puck can pair up to four Steam Controllers | Less convenient outside SteamOS, according to Tom’s Guide |
| Xbox-style controller | Players who want a familiar offset-stick layout or already own one | Steam Input support depends on the individual controller and connection | Connection method and number of supported pads depend on the model; not stated as a certified Steam Machine list | Test the exact model with SteamOS before buying several |
| PlayStation-style controller | Players who prefer symmetric sticks or already own one | Steam Input support depends on the individual controller | Connection method and local-player count depend on the model; not stated as a certified list | Features such as touch, motion or adaptive triggers may not map identically in every game |
| Switch-style controller | Compact layouts and local multiplayer with existing hardware | Steam Input support depends on the individual controller | Connection method and player count depend on the model; verify before purchase | Button labels and layouts can differ from on-screen prompts |
| Wired USB controller | A fixed seating position or avoiding wireless pairing | Steam Input support depends on the individual controller | Uses a USB port; a powered hub may be necessary when several devices are connected | No model-by-model certification was provided |
Should you buy the puck?
The Steam Controller does not require the puck: Valve explicitly says it can pair with Steam Machine without it. The puck is nevertheless useful when the machine is across the room. It acts as a wireless transmitter and magnetic charging station, giving you a dedicated link instead of relying on the console’s ordinary Bluetooth connection and a convenient place to return the controller.
The puck is also the right accessory for local multiplayer with several Steam Controllers. Tom’s Guide reports a limit of four controllers paired to one puck. That is a specific claim about Steam Controllers and should not be generalized to four arbitrary third-party pads.
Choose a connection method
- Puck: choose this for the dedicated wireless link, magnetic charging and four-controller Steam Controller setups.
- Bluetooth: choose this when you want to avoid the puck or have a controller that already uses Bluetooth.
- USB: choose this for a fixed seat, initial troubleshooting or a controller that does not maintain a reliable wireless connection.
Can Xbox, PlayStation or Switch controllers work?
They may work, but the available material does not provide an official, model-by-model certification list. Treat a third-party pad as a compatibility option to test on your particular Steam Machine rather than as a guaranteed recommendation.

Before buying multiple controllers, test one unit through the connection you intend to use. Confirm that SteamOS detects it, that the buttons map correctly in Steam Input and that the games you play recognize the layout. A familiar pad can be the better choice when everyone already knows its button positions, when trackpads are unwanted or when the Steam Machine will be used with applications outside Steam.
When a familiar pad is the better choice
- You already own a working controller and do not need the Steam Controller’s trackpads, gyro or grip buttons.
- Several people are joining a couch session and you want identical, familiar layouts.
- You expect to spend significant time in non-Steam applications or on other devices.
- You prefer a conventional d-pad and dual-stick layout over cursor-like trackpad control.
Accessories that match Steam Machine’s hardware
| Accessory | Why it is useful | Hardware fact to match | Buying and setup cautions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Certified HDMI 2.0 cable | Replacement for a damaged lead or a longer run to a wall-mounted TV | Steam Machine has an HDMI 2.0 output and includes an HDMI 2.0 cable | Buy the length you need and confirm that the display supports the resolution and refresh mode you intend to use |
| Powered USB hub | Adds ports for wired controllers, storage and other peripherals | Two front USB-A 3.2 ports, two rear USB-A 2.0 ports and one rear USB-C port | Use a powered model when several devices draw power at once; match the hub’s connectors to the devices you own |
| Cat6 Ethernet cable | Provides a consistent wired network path when the router is nearby | Steam Machine has a 1 Gbps Ethernet port and Wi-Fi 6E | Ethernet can improve connection consistency, but it does not increase rendering performance |
| microSDXC card | Provides removable game or media storage | Steam Machine has a front microSD card slot; internal storage is 512 GB or 2 TB | Verify SteamOS support, capacity and the card’s intended use before selecting a model |
| 4K gaming TV or monitor | Creates the living-room display the system is designed to drive | Steam Machine provides HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.4 | Compare actual HDMI input limits, refresh rate, input latency and adaptive-sync support rather than relying on a “4K” label alone |
Steam Machine specifications that affect your accessory choices
PC Gamer reports the following 2026 hardware configuration. These details explain why the accessories above are practical rather than arbitrary add-ons.
| Component | Reported specification | Accessory implication |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | Semi-custom AMD Zen 4, 6 cores and 12 threads | No special controller requirement; display and network choices remain the more visible living-room concerns |
| Graphics | RDNA 3 graphics with 8 GB GDDR6 VRAM | Check the display’s real HDMI 2.0 or DisplayPort 1.4 limits when selecting resolution and refresh |
| System memory | 16 GB DDR5 RAM | Memory is not user-expanded by adding a USB hub or microSD card |
| Internal storage | 512 GB or 2 TB | A microSDXC card is removable expansion, not a replacement for the internal drive |
| Wireless | Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2 | Bluetooth controllers can be tested directly; Ethernet is an option when the router is close |
| Controller radio | Integrated 2.4 GHz Steam Controller adapter | Supports the dedicated Steam Controller wireless path; the puck remains an optional transmitter and charger |
| Video outputs | HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.4 | Use a suitable HDMI 2.0 cable or a DisplayPort connection for the chosen screen |
| USB | Two front USB-A 3.2, two rear USB-A 2.0 and one rear USB-C | A powered hub helps when controller, storage and other peripherals exceed the built-in ports |
| Networking | 1 Gbps Ethernet | A Cat6 cable is appropriate for a nearby router; it does not change graphics performance |
Prices and what is included
PC Gamer reports a $1,049 starting price for the 512 GB Steam Machine without a controller, $1,349 for the 2 TB version without a controller and $1,428 for the reviewed 2 TB bundle. These are 2026 figures and availability can change.

- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
Tom’s Guide reports a $99 US price for the Steam Controller. TechRadar reports regional standalone pricing of $99, £85 and AU$149, and says the controller bundle adds $79, £59 or AU$119 to the Steam Machine base price. The different bundle and standalone figures reflect source, region and package context; check the current regional Valve store page before ordering.
PC Gamer’s report of more than 35 hours of battery life applies to the bundled Steam Controller in its 2026 coverage. Do not assume the same runtime for a different controller or for a different usage pattern.
Best accessory package for each type of owner
Single-player Steam living room
Start with the Steam Controller. Use the puck if the machine is positioned far from your seat or if magnetic charging is important; otherwise Bluetooth or USB keeps the initial setup simpler. Keep the included HDMI 2.0 cable unless its length or condition is unsuitable.
Best Value
- With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
- Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
- A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
- The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
Four-player couch co-op
Use Steam Controllers with the puck if you want the documented four-controller pairing arrangement. If you mix in other pads, test every model and connection before the game night; the four-controller figure does not certify arbitrary Bluetooth or USB combinations.
Router near the television
Add a Cat6 Ethernet cable and use the machine’s 1 Gbps port when consistent network behavior matters. Wi-Fi 6E remains available, but wired Ethernet is the straightforward choice when running a cable is practical. It affects connectivity, not rendering speed.
Small internal drive
The 512 GB model benefits most from removable storage, so consider a microSDXC card after confirming SteamOS support and the capacity you need. Treat the card as expansion space; it does not turn the 512 GB model into the 2 TB configuration.

Replace the included HDMI 2.0 cable only when you need additional length or a spare. Match the cable and the display’s HDMI input to the resolution and refresh mode you plan to use. A “4K” display can still have different limits on different inputs.
Many wired accessories
Use a powered USB hub when the built-in ports are occupied by several controllers, storage devices or other peripherals. A powered hub is preferable to an unpowered splitter when multiple devices need power simultaneously.
Quick Recap
Setup and troubleshooting
Pairing the Steam Controller
- Choose whether you will use the puck, Bluetooth or USB. The Steam Controller supports all three connection routes.
- For Bluetooth, open SteamOS’s Bluetooth settings, put the controller into its pairing mode using the controller’s documented controls and select it from the device list.
- For USB, connect the controller directly to a Steam Machine USB port and allow SteamOS and Steam Input to detect it.
- For the puck, connect the puck as intended for the Steam Machine setup, then pair the controller through the puck’s wireless link. Use the puck when you want its transmitter and magnetic charging functions.
- Open a game and verify the layout in Steam Input. Remap controls or select a community layout when the default arrangement does not match the game.
Adding local controllers
- Pair each Steam Controller through the puck or another supported connection.
- Check that SteamOS assigns each controller to a separate player.
- Launch the game and confirm its local multiplayer mode sees every player.
- Remember that the documented maximum is up to four Steam Controllers on one puck; mixed-controller limits are not established here.
When a controller is not recognized
- Try the other supported route: USB can isolate a Bluetooth or puck pairing problem.
- Open SteamOS’s controller settings and confirm that the device appears before launching the game.
- For a third-party pad, test one controller by itself first; do not assume that a second identical unit will behave the same way in every game.
- If the problem occurs only outside SteamOS games, use a controller with broader platform support or treat the application as an unverified compatibility case.
When the display does not show the expected mode
- Confirm that the cable is certified for HDMI 2.0 when using the HDMI output.
- Check the display’s specific HDMI input, because televisions and monitors can impose different resolution and refresh limits on different ports.
- If the screen supports DisplayPort 1.4 and your installation allows it, compare that input with HDMI 2.0.
When storage or ports run out
- Use the front microSD slot for removable expansion after verifying SteamOS support and capacity.
- Move high-use wired peripherals to a powered USB hub, keeping in mind that a hub adds ports but does not increase internal memory.
- Choose the 2 TB internal-storage configuration at purchase if your library size makes removable storage inconvenient.
Buying checklist
- Choose the Steam Controller when Steam Input, trackpads, gyro and grip buttons matter more than broad platform compatibility.
- Choose a familiar Xbox-, PlayStation- or Switch-style pad when layout familiarity or non-Steam use is the priority, and test the exact model first.
- Buy the puck for dedicated wireless operation, magnetic charging and up to four Steam Controllers; it is not mandatory for one controller.
- Keep the included HDMI 2.0 cable unless you need a different length or a replacement.
- Add a powered USB hub only when your controller and peripheral count exceeds the five built-in USB ports.
- Use Cat6 Ethernet when the router is nearby and connection consistency matters.
- Use a microSDXC card for removable capacity, after checking SteamOS support and the desired size.
- For a 4K display, compare refresh rate, latency, adaptive sync and the actual HDMI 2.0 or DisplayPort 1.4 input limits.
- Check current regional pricing and stock before purchase because the reported 2026 prices are volatile and bundle prices differ by market.
